Island Plan of Attack

Hiiiiii 😀 How are you guys doing??

I’m so happy you’re enjoying RhodeyGirl’s guest post– ya’ll know that healthy entertaining is one of my favorite things to do and I love the menu she created. I’m excited to throw a dinner party when we get back (and when Jeni gets back- she and her pilot are coming to this resort Monday night!). Also, thank you so much on your input for what you want to see with the Summer Shape Up. I have a great idea of how I want to do it, thanks to you guys <3

We started our day today with some room service:

room service

Omelets for both of us and fruit for me.

The omelet was a little too greasy goo, so I a couple of bites and called it quits

omelet

and ate all of the fruit:

fruit

We also brought Shaun T. with us on vacation- since it’s recovery week, we do the Core Balance and Cardio DVD all week. It’s not as intense as Month 1 (to give our muscles a rest and chance to re-coup) and still gets our heart rates up, without being too ridiculous.

tv

Some of ya’ll asked to see the cups we brought with us…

drinks

The pilot didn’t use his today, but I filled mine with a smoothie made of chocolate almond milk (from the depths of my suitcase) and Vega protein, mixed up in the Vitamixalicious.

We spent most of our day here:

pool

And got some poolside snacks:

snack

(chicken salad for the pilot and salad with balsamic for me)

We also painted shells.

I turned this:

shell

into THIS!

shell (2)

Hahah, I’m a personal trainer… not an artist. Obviously 😉

We also hit up the gym for some weights action.

weights

More snackage:

snack (2)

Salmon with veggies for me and fish sandwich for the pilot… I probably could have taken the plastic off for the photo, haha. Bad blogger!

and bubbly:

bubbly

It was in the fridge, so we had to use it, right? 🙂

Some of ya’ll have asked what my vacation plan of attack is as far as food and exercise goes…

Here’s how it’s gonna go down:

For the most part, I’m going to eat Gina Food and do Gina exercise, whether it’s munching salads and fish with veggies and doing Insanity, weights and yoga. However, if I see something that catches my eye, I’m gonna roll with it 😀 Like the chocolate buffet last night! I haven’t had another chance in my life for someone to serve me chocolate and wine at 10pm, so I’ve gotta take advantage 😉 I think that’s the beauty of vacations- you can stick to the routine you’re used to for the most part, but definitely have to live it up and try things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. For example, you won’t see me tearing into a store-bought cookie while I’m here (because I could get that ANYWHERE and it probably wouldn’t be that good). You will however, see me occasionally feasting on things that I wouldn’t usually get to have and that I’ll actually enjoy.

I think the duration of a vacation depends on things, too. Since we’re here for 8 days, I’m going to stick to what I like to do for the most part, because that’s a long time to feel gross from ditching workouts and overindulging. It’s also feasible because we have a LOT of down time here. If we were in Italy, where I’d want to walk around and sight-see, I probably wouldn’t exercise very much. So that’s the plan.. that isn’t really a plan 🙂 Just gonna keep doing my thang and living it up! Yeahhhh.

Well we’re off to dinner, seeing a lil show and then DANCING.

See ya in the morning <3

Gina

What’s your vacay mentality?? Do you eat and exercise the same way, play it by ear, or throw caution to the wind?? 🙂

I have the same vacation mentality. If I see food that is special or that I usually can’t get or that looks REALLY good I will splurge..I mean it IS vacation! I also try to exercise by sightseeing and running if possible. When I went to Costa Rica back in April there really wasn’t anywhere to run so I just did yoga all week and it was a great recharge for me. Sometimes you gotta go with the flow! 🙂 Have fun!

  2. RhodeyGirl on May 12, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I wish I was in your heaven right now. Your trip just sounds so relaxing!

Thanks for posting my healthy dinner party post! So fun!!!! It is an honor to guest on fitnessista!

  3. Jenny on May 12, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I play it by ear, but I like to do active things on vacay- swim, kayak… I make sure to throw a run in every once in a while, though!

  4. Lisa @ Early Morning Run on May 12, 2010 at 8:04 pm

I like trying to stay with my regular eating and exercise patterns as best as possible, but like you, I will also indulge a little if something special catches my eye. Also, for fitness, if I’m somewhere without a gym, I’ll do whatever I can, like go for a run, walk or hike, swim, kayak, whatever I can. Just staying active and eating well is key!

  5. Whitney@Whitinspired on May 12, 2010 at 8:17 pm

We are pretty active on vacations, hiking, biking, heavy walking, etc. so I don’t do normal workouts. And I eat whatever I want when I’m on vacation. I’m like you in that I don’t eat anything I could get at home, but I definitely indulge. Probably over-indulge.

  6. Runeatrepeat on May 12, 2010 at 8:26 pm

I indulge without guilt and deal with it when I get home. I’m not going to regret eating what I wanted on my honeymoon on my death bed 🙂

  7. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on May 12, 2010 at 8:42 pm

My vacation mentality is the same!! Eat like I normally do and exercise, but indulge a bit. 🙂

  8. Heather (Heather's Dish) on May 12, 2010 at 8:51 pm

i try my hardest to eat well, making great choices in the morning and at lunch and then splurging a little for dinner. i try to workout, but if we’re staying somewhere with no workout room we try to walk EVERYWHERE. i’m still working on that balance, but it’s fun 🙂

  9. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on May 12, 2010 at 9:01 pm

I try hard to stay on track when I’m on vacation but sometimes it doesn’t happen. 🙂 I love the fact that I can come home and jump right back into the game though! 🙂

  10. PhillyGirlRuns on May 12, 2010 at 9:14 pm

SOOO jealous…I need some tropics in my life! Every vacation, we swear we’re going to get room service…aaaaand then we never actually do it. One of these days, I swear.

  11. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on May 12, 2010 at 9:14 pm

That’s a great mentality! I roll with the same thing. I try to eat as normally as I would, but I definitely indulge if it is presented to me.

  12. christina cadden on May 12, 2010 at 9:15 pm

    So pretty!

  13. Lindsey on May 12, 2010 at 9:34 pm

unless it’s a place KNOWN for amazing food you’ll never have anywhere else, it seems silly to go overboard.
On my honeymoon just last month, we went on a cruise and maybe snacked on french toast because we never have it, but if it didn’t taste good, we passed. Or we didn’t eat it because it wasn’t something we were interested in doing.
However, I had a cup of delicious hot chocolate everysinglenight because I was always cold and it was tasty! we also went to the ship gym nearly every day and neither of us gained weight which was our plan!

I am really excited for your new shape up plan!

  14. Kilee on May 12, 2010 at 9:34 pm

I totally agree with your vacay mentality. I try to stick to my usual eats and workouts, but if something looks good or a go for a long walk instead of a gym session, great! Every picture looked so beautiful. Enjoy it while you are there. I’m getting excited for the Summer Shape up!

  15. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) on May 12, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Did you bring your Vitamix to the Bahamas!?!?

It usually depends what kind of vacation. If I’m on a cruise, you better believe I’m eating up! There are some great options on cruise ships! I don’t have a hard time eating healthy on vacay since it’s the food I enjoy eating. Also, I’m so busy that it’s more structured in a way. Bf, L, D…

  16. Maya on May 12, 2010 at 9:39 pm

You were able to bring a vita mix to the Bahamas!? That sounds like a great plan, how could you not take advantage of the chocolate buffet?

  17. kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com on May 12, 2010 at 9:48 pm

everything looks so healthy! i mean vacation time yea we all let loose a bit, why not! but i think uve got a good plan set out. have fun!!!

  18. Ashley on May 12, 2010 at 10:00 pm

    Waaaaait wait wait.

    You brought your Vitamix!!??!?

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2010 at 11:25 pm

      yes 😀 i’ll take a picture

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2010 at 11:26 pm

awesome, i can’t wait to check it out!

  20. Allie on May 12, 2010 at 10:33 pm

wait, did you haul your VITAMIX with you??!! in a suitcase! that’s hilarious. i am definitley using this as an example whenever i am accused of overpacking.

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2010 at 11:25 pm

hahah heck yeah i did 🙂

  21. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 12, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I just enjoy myself! i don’t really about exercise too much. but i think when I am in Mexico for two weeks next year i will be hittin the gym a few times there just to help me feel good. But other than that, i eat sensibly and just be touristy and walk a lot.

  22. Katie on May 12, 2010 at 11:12 pm

You FLEW your vita-mix to the Bahamas?

Lady, I thought I loved my vita-mix, but you’ve taken it to a whole new level. I want to see this set up.

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2010 at 11:25 pm

haha i will take a picture, just for you 🙂

  23. Andie (yuminmytumtum) on May 12, 2010 at 11:33 pm

I HATE GREASY OMELETTES. Whenever I go to any hotel and order an omelette they always come back greasy. And I hate wasting all of those veggies! Major pet peeve.

  24. Katie @ Ordinary Girl, Extraordinary Journey on May 12, 2010 at 11:58 pm

    Oooh everything looks super yummy!!

When we went on a cruise earlier this year I tried to make the best choices during the day and then at dinner I let myself have whatever I wanted. That was a good setup, I felt pretty satisfied.

  25. Lorin on May 13, 2010 at 12:04 am

You brought your vitamix with you?

  26. Jaclyn on May 13, 2010 at 12:20 am

I think duration is key to answering that question too. Of course if you’re only somewhere for a weekend, why waste your time in the hotel gym or refuse the offer of gourmet meals?? But a longer, more spread-out vacay is reason to stick to healthier habits 😉

  27. Alycia @ FitnFresh on May 13, 2010 at 12:24 am

lol i can’t believe you brought your vitamix with you, you’re crazy girl! and usually when i’m on a vacay, i do pretty much the same thing you do. i eat fairly healthfully and i still work out (normally) but if i see something i know i’d never get to try again or at least not for a longgg time – i definitely go for it and i never feel guilty. i love me some food!

  28. Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) on May 13, 2010 at 7:35 am

My vacation mentality is similar to yours. I don’t eat differently JUST because I am on vacation- I am usually drawn to the healthier stuff anyway! But if there is something good, I will eat it! As for exercise, I go with the flow- usually I do a lot of walking, try to run and whatever else happens, happens!

  29. Katie on May 13, 2010 at 7:58 am

We had 4 days in Jamaica for my brothers wedding… lets just say I threw caution to the wind then and lived like I was dying! On a “normal” beach vacation to South Carolina, I always stick to my routine and typically get my workouts in first thing in the morning. It’s less hot outside and I have more time to spend with my friends and family the rest of the day. 🙂 (And take numerous naps on the beach of course) 😉

  30. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on May 13, 2010 at 8:10 am

When I’m on vacation I get in exercise by doing active things like kayaking or sightseeing. But I don’t head to the gym. I figure I paid a heckuva lot of money to fly wherever I am, and more money to stay there, I may as well use up as much time as possible exploring the local area and getting a feel for the culture. I still eat fairly healthy, but I’m definitely more lenient when it comes to trying the local cuisine. I know I’ll only get to most places I visit once!

  31. Suzanne on May 13, 2010 at 8:16 am

This is appropriate, since I’m leaving for New York tomorrow and have been brainstorming my “plan of attack”. I don’t think I’m going to exercise as intensely as I usually do, and am not even sure if I’ll formally exercise at all. I’m bring gym clothes in case the opportunity presents itself, and will try to squeeze in a run around the city. I’m not restricting my diet per-say, but I’m going to stay away from processed foods and make sure my indulgences are “worth it”. Also, lots of walking and dancing 🙂

  32. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on May 13, 2010 at 8:18 am

I have the same mentality as you. If I’m on vacay in the tropics, I’ll hit up the gym a few times since I’ll just be spending the rest of my time lying out on the beach. And as for food, I’m usually drawn to the healthier stuff anyways but if I want to indulge, I will! It’s all about living it up while on vacation! And I definitely won’t say no to a creamy, sugary pina colada. 😉

  33. Jill on May 13, 2010 at 8:51 am

I try and stay on track with proper nutrition & exercise, some vaca’s are more difficult then others. I have never thought to bring my protein powders, vitamix, etc. Gina, you are truly a fabulous inspiration!

  34. Jill on May 13, 2010 at 8:56 am

I try and stay on track for the most part, some vaca’s are more difficult than others. I have never thought of bringing my own protein powder, vitamix, etc on vacation, but definetly will next time. Gina, you are truly a fabulous inspiration!

  35. Katie @ Katie's Healthy Discovery on May 13, 2010 at 9:18 am

It looks like you are having a great vacation!

When it comes to vacations (I haven’t had one in a while) I would try to workout at least a couple of times (since I enjoy it anyways) and try to eat fairly healthy but I’m on vacation so it’s ok to indulge a little 🙂

  36. Ilana on May 13, 2010 at 9:25 am

I don’t “try” to do anything differently when I’m on vacation. I eat how I eat, no matter where I am!

  37. ActiveEggplant on May 13, 2010 at 10:13 am

My “plan of attack” depends on the length of the vacay – if it’s short & we have lots to fit in (i.e. visiting with family, etc) I just roll with the punches and just go with what comes up and indulge. If it’s a LONG vacation though, I try to stick to my routine as much as possible with one or two “free” days thrown in.

  38. Lauren W. on May 13, 2010 at 10:13 am

Your vacation sounds amazing!! I always enjoy vacation workouts so much more because of the change in surroundings and it gives you a chance to try new things.

Question for you. I’d love to know what you pack for vacation in terms of protein powders, bars, snacks, bottles, etc. etc. I think the tough part for me is figuring out all the things I’ll need while I’m away, so I end up just throwing random things in the bag. Maybe a reader’s request when you return?

xo have such a great HONEYMOON!!

  39. Ashley (whole-ier) on May 13, 2010 at 10:30 am

you are my idol. I wish i could be that dedicated on vacation. Instead, I say “I’m on vacation!” and indulge in everything. ahhh… maybe i just need to take more vacations so I can practice 🙂

    happy honeymoon!

  40. maria on May 13, 2010 at 10:54 am

    Hey Gina!
Looks like you are having a great start to your vacation! 😉
I try to balance it out on vacation – I am on vacation but its not a free for all!
For the summer shape up I would be interested in a mix of gym workouts and say home work outs that can be done with a mat/band/some free weights (if that is possible) – you know for the days where time is tight.
    Keep enjoying the tropics! xo

  41. Ashley on May 13, 2010 at 11:35 am

How did you pack your Vitamix??? Did you have a separate suitcase for all your food, powders, etc?

  42. Paige (Running Around Normal) on May 13, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Pretty shells! That’s cool that Jeni will be joining you:)
On vacation, I stick with healthy eating, like you, but will still indulge if it’s an awesome opportunity. As far as exercise goes, I still like to get it in most days, but I try to utilize my surroundings, i.e. jog on the beach, swim in the ocean, dancing with the hula girls!

  43. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on May 13, 2010 at 1:37 pm

    Hi Gina!!!!!!

So glad you’re having a great vacation!! My vacation motto is to eat like I normally do, exercise a little bit, and splurge on the things I can’t get at home…island drinks, CHOCOLATE BUFFET(!), room service in bed, island specialities, etc.

I also set up an “out of office” reply to my e-mail and VM and reeeeelax. 🙂 Ahhhh, SO JEALOUS OF YOU!!!!!!

    Happy Honeymoon!!!!

Quick question: Can you recommend any yoga podcasts, or vid’s online that I can download? I really like power, vinyasa, and ashtanga yoga. Thanks SO MUCH!!!!

    XOXOXOX

I like to keep it healthy for vacations, but still have some fun. Eat a couple yummy treats in small portions. Last year, I managed to losse weight on vacation b/c I still got up to go running and check out the hotel’s gym.

Gina have a great time. I work in a workout when convenient, drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit, eat light for breakfast and lunch, and indulge at dinner.

That is one swanky resort you are staying at….love the chocolate buffet:)
