Once, Twice, Three Times a Vampire

Heyyyyyy 😀 Happy Monday! How was the rest of your weekend?

Our Sunday was muy bueno—we cleaned around the casa and Jeni and I convinced our pilots to see New Moon with us. The snide comments were pretty minimal… the guys just waited until the movie was over to make fun of everyone 😉 And yes, the girls and I just saw New Moon a couple of nights ago for the second time. I think I’ve gotten my fill.. for now 😉

Some of the foodie highlights from yesterday:

MILLET BREAD (I can’t even tell you how much I love this carby delight) topped with the chipotle almond butter Heaby sent me.

toast

On top of a Santa plate

HEAB, we might have to work out some kind of macaroon/almond butter trade off 😉 That chipotle almond butter is my dream come true- amazing!

Sweet potato with Herdez and raw goat cheddar with wilted spinach

spspinach

More ginger chocolate

chocolate

Fajita dinner!

fajita

My “meat” was portobello mushrooms, served with vegetarian refried beans and a little Ezekiel tortilla 😀

While I put my fixings all on one plate, the pilot did a build-your-fajita station (he had steak fajitas with avocado and sour cream on white tortillas)

fajitadinner

And yes, we ate without placemats last night. Cannibals! haha

I didn’t eat very raw yesterday, because we hadn’t made a grocery stop at the commiscary yet. Trying to eat raw without fresh produce is like taking a Bikram class next to a deodorant-free sweaty man. It can be done, but is not an easy task 😉

I did get in an awesome workout– 20 minutes of hot yoga in the guest room (91*!) before my internet cut out and an hour of walk/sprint/steady state on the base track. Not too shabby 😉

To be honest, my foot started bothering me last week after I took the jazz and tap class. This old lady isn’t used to bounding about like she used to, and I think the impact from landing tweaked my foot. I’ve been taking it super easy and yesterday I decided to try running a little to see how it felt. It didn’t hurt at all (thank goodness) and my foot is still in pretty decent shape. I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to run the 1/2 marathon in a couple of weeks… my aching foot got in the way of my last long run and I don’t feel ready for it. No matter what, I’m going to go and cheer my friends on, and I may decide to run it for fun and not for a time. We shall see… but you can bet your booty I’m running the Princess Half in March 😀

I’m off to walk the puppies then hit up Wizzle for the rest of the groceries.

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: Have you ever dropped out of a race? Will I feel worse if I don’t do it, or if I do it and don’t do as well as I could?? My last half, I was SO ready for it and finished feeling STRONG and elated—right now, I don’t feel nearly as prepared :/

Something to do: Check out the AMAZING giveaway my favorite twins are having! It’s your chance to try some of their delicious treats… especially that flatbread… ohhhhhh yum 😀

Something else to do: Get in a good laugh and a good cry by listening to Santa’s Brat Patrol and Christmas Wish on Johnjay and Rich (their podcasts are available on iTunes—just click “Best of Johnjay and Rich”). I love listening to Brat Patrol –cracks me up- and Christmas Wish warms my heart.. Here’s a little blurb about Christmas Wish:

How a “Wish” is Chosen and Granted
Listeners are asked to submit a letter nominating a family they know of who could use a helping hand. Letters are received via our website at www.johnjayandrich.com , fax or mail. The chosen families are selected by committee. Families in need must meet specific criteria as established by the Foundation. Once the family is selected, the letter writer is invited to join Johnjay and Rich for the Christmas Wish radio segment. This is all a surprise to the selected family. The family is called live on the radio and their story is read by the person who nominated them. At the same time the Christmas Wish “Elves” knock on the receiving family’s door to deliver their “wishes/gifts” immediately. Wish fulfillment has included new clothes for the family, toys, groceries, bedding, mattress, gas, auto and home repairs, furniture and specific household bill payments, etc. Each “wish” and be heard again online through podcasts delivered on www.johnjayandrich.com through the Christmas Wish section of their website.

So as you can see, they work diligently to help families in need this holiday season. While it pains me to hear stories of people in unfortunate and devastating situations, it also makes me so thankful that we can look out for each other and provide a helping hand in a troubling time. I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and haven’t really commented yet. I just want to let you know that I LOVE some of your meal ideas! They really have given me the courage to experiment with a lot of different varieties in the kitchen.

Also, the 1/2 marathon in March that you’re speaking of, is that the Princess 1/2 at Disney World? If so, I’m totally going to be looking out for you because I’ll be there as well!
    Best regards 🙂

I don’t think you (or anyone) should feel guilty for dropping out of the race, or any other fitness event. I think I’ve said it before, but I have dropped out of a competition before after months of training for it. I firmly believe that if your heart is not in it, there is no reason to it. Think of all of your other accomplishments. You have done alot of great things, and skipping one race doesn’t void all of the others. I have never, ever felt guilty and I am pretty Type A…LOL! Especially if you are feeling pain, I would not go through with it!

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:15 am

good to know.. especially since i’m type a to the extreme 😉

My physical therapist told me to drop out of my half-marathon last weekend, because of some shin issues, and also because I was sick. I just felt like I would be so disappointed in myself if I dropped out after 6 months of training (which was much too long, leading to my shin problems). I ended up doing it anyway, and just told myself that it didn’t matter what my time was, and I could walk whenever I wanted. Well, it was super hard, but I finished, and I’m proud of that. I know personally I have a hard time giving up on something that I’ve worked hard to do, but I don’t think it is something to feel bad about. Sometimes its better to think about your goals long term and if running this half-marathon is going to help you reach them, then I say go for it. But if it is going to hinder your progress more than enhance it than I don’t think dropping out is anything to feel bad about!

  5. Jordan @ Salt Sweat Sugar on December 7, 2009 at 9:07 am

I wouldn’t feel too bad about sitting this one out if your foot is bothering you. It’s only going to make it worse! We don’t want you to get hurt!

  6. julie on December 7, 2009 at 9:17 am

3xs is the perfect amount of times to see new moon in the theaters. because sooner then later it will be on dvd and you can watch it errrryday then 🙂

don’t feel bad! i actually registered for the disney marathon over the summer when i was having a major running kick and i overtrained like an idiot and hurt my hip (tore a little bit of my labrum) and since then i haven’t reallly been able to run and i just don’t have the income for physical therapy and my heart is just not in it anymore! you gotta do whats right for you 🙂

I was signed up for a half-marathon in Philly this September, but stress fractured my foot while training. I was technically “healed” by the time the race rolled around, but had not been running for 2 months and knew it wouldn’t be smart to increase my mileage that much on my tender foot. I decided to sit it out (which was pretty tough, especially since I paid the non-refundable entry fee), but I know it was the right decision. There are SO many other races in my (and your) future, so if you’re not feeling it, don’t push it!!

Cute snowman plate! I love eating off of festive dinnerware, ha. :)It just starts your day off right.
As far as the 1/2 marathon goes…if your heart really isn’t in it, I wouldn’t think it would be that enjoyable. I say save all that energy for the princess 1/2 🙂 i think the tiara medal is motivation enough!

  12. Lily @ Lily's Health Pad on December 7, 2009 at 10:19 am

I have never dropped out of a race (but I certainly would if I were injured!). I was seriously undertrained for my last half marathon-not to mention it was about 90 degress outside! I wanted to quit the race so badly, but I just decided that if I had to walk, then that’s what I would do in order to get through it.

  13. Lauren (Biochemista) on December 7, 2009 at 10:40 am

    Hey Gina!

I think you should listen to your body and if you may be injured, it’s not worth it. You are a runner so there will be plently more and it’s not like this is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to run a 1/2. My second time running the Boston Marathon I dislocated my knee on the 22nd mile and had to drop out. I spent 4 months after that in PT because I didn’t listen to my better judgement.

If you are considering not running because you missed a long run or two, I’d say go for it because you workout like crazy all the time and are in great shape! But if it’s due to injury I say think about it..

    Hope that helps 🙂

can you share a link/recipe for the millet bread?

  17. Certifiably Fit on December 7, 2009 at 11:00 am

I don’t think there is anything wrong if you drop out of a race especially when you are having issues with your foot bothering you. It is important to listen to what your body is telling you.

I saw new moon a couple days after it came out. I enjoyed it and will be getting it when it comes out on DVD.

  18. Heather on December 7, 2009 at 11:08 am

Ya know I’ve been worrying a bit about my 1/2 marathon coming up in January too. I hurt my achilles last week and now I’m just left wondering when the pain will go away enough to try running. I think you’ve really got to listen to your body and you’ll feel good about the decision you make. Whether it be to run for time, for fun or just cheer. Hope your foot feels better soon!

  19. Erin @ Big Girl Eats on December 7, 2009 at 11:51 am

I’ve been trying to get ideas on incorporating more protein and “meats” into my meals, after going veggie a few months ago. Great thought on the bellas! Didn’t think about those.

I think don’t think you should think of it as “dropping out.” It’s got a negative connotation that to me, means one is a slacker, and you’re totally not Gina!! It’s more like “deferring” 🙂 If you are feeling pain and/or discomfort, you might not want to push through it. It’s not like 13.1 is just a trot around the block. I think the pain feelings are definitely different than a general not feeling prepared – so it is entirely your own personal preference and decision.

  20. chrysta on December 7, 2009 at 11:52 am

Dont worry about the half marathon! I think these events should be looked at as something fun to do and not something you have to do. I hope your foot feels better!!

  21. Katie on December 7, 2009 at 11:52 am

Love the santa plate! Glad your pilot went to see New Moon with you! I haven’t taken my hubby yet but fully plan to in the near future!

Mmmm….veggie fajitas sounds so good! Love your meal plans!

  22. Melissa S. on December 7, 2009 at 12:03 pm

i’ve dropped out of several races due to injury and was def glad i did because the injury would have only gotten worse if i had raced. it pays off not to run sometimes!

  23. Nelly on December 7, 2009 at 12:38 pm

HAAA my mom, my sister, and me all planned to do the Indianapolis half marathon and that morning it was COLD and RAINY so we decided to walk inside on the treadmills and TALK!
    So dont feel bad 🙂

  24. Angela @ A Healthy Fit on December 7, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I had to drop out of my first marathon due to sickness. I went to the race and my ears were ringing and my dad was with me and told me I should really re-think about doing it. I decided (with a lot of crying during and after) that I wouldn’t run the race. You really should listen to your body. There is always another race and you don’t want to injur yourself more. I signed up for another marathon the day I didn’t do my race. 4 months later I ran my first marathon–sick free! It was worth the wait.

  25. Allie on December 7, 2009 at 1:07 pm

    that AButter looks soooooooo good!!!
so I don’t want to discourage you, because i am a runner (20 years and counting), but that said, i think all injuries should be taken seriously, and i think that women tend to push themselves too hard and our pain threshold is way too high when there is something we want. i didn’t always feel this way, but to make a very long and painful story long…as i said i am a runner- i can’t remember not being a runner. this spring a fractured my hip. i didn’t know it- or maybe i did, but i refused to believe it. i was training for a marathon! i thought it was tendonitis, so i kept popping the advil and ignoring the pain and not going to the doctor…until i literally could not walk. three pins in my hip later, i am just starting to run again, and you can bet i am grateful for every step i take. i never want to relive what i went through. i was way too hard on my body; pain was its way of telling me to go easy, that something was wrong. there’s a lot more i learned, but i won’t write a book here! just think hard about why you are doing it.

  26. Paige (Running Around Normal) on December 7, 2009 at 2:19 pm

Hehe I love that you saw New Moon three times:)
That almond butter sounds sooo amazing. Mmm mm
About the half – I’ve only dropped out of a 5k race, so it’s on a different scale, but I was glad I didn’t end up running it. I was sick, then weather was crap, and I had had a rough night the night before. But it’s completely up to you – listen to yourself – whether it’s to push yourself or to know if you’d be pushing it too much 🙂
    Have a great day, Gina!

  27. Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) on December 7, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Chipotle almond butter for macaroons. Anytime my friend. 🙂

…”is like taking a Bikram class next to a deodorant-free sweaty man” Been there, done that. Ewww.

I have never dropped out of a race, but I have decided last minute NOT to run when I knew my body was not ready. You’ll know if you need to run or not. Just listen.

Thanks for the Christmas Wish link. Off to check it out.

  28. mmclaughlin on December 7, 2009 at 6:23 pm

The husband and I ran a 5k in Charleston last weekend – it was 47 degrees and pouring rain, and it started 20 minutes late. I’ve been congested and coughing/achy ever since. 🙁
BUT – Myself and 3 of my friends are running the Disney Princess in March!! We’re so excited about it! I also wanted to run the Disney Wine and Dine next October (it’s at night, and I love running at night), but we’ll be living in Alaska by then and the husband doesn’t want to spring for the plane ticket on top of the $130-ish entry fee. 🙁

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:36 pm

so cool you’re running the princess half, too! please say hi 😀

  29. JenSanders52 on December 7, 2009 at 6:28 pm

    Gina,
I would absolutely NOT run on an injured foot… especially for a long race. I injured my foot last May, and continued to “push through the pain.” It has gotten to the point where I can’t put any pressure on my right foot, and I have to have an operation next week. I’ll now be out of commission for 6-8 weeks, which is going to drive me insane (hello x-mas cookie shaped hips. Just call me Mizz Claus)! Listen to your body, and definitely get your foot checked out by a podiatrist. You never know what could be causing your pain, and how bad it could get.

By the way, I LOVE your site. I found it by accident this weekend, and it’s the first blog I have EVER been excited to read each day. Thanks for the veggie recipes and exercise ideas. It is inspiring ?

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:37 pm

thanks for the advice- i’ll definitely listen to my body!
so glad you found my little blog.. hope to see you around here more often 🙂

    Gina,

I found your blog through a link on my friends website — and spent some time reading about you and your journey. I am not only inspired by how actively you seek heath and wellness, but also touched by your humility. You area a beautiful girl living a full life, and manage to express yourself with grace and warmth without a single note of being condescending. Thank you for sharing yourself with the internet!
I look forward to future posts.

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:39 pm

wow mattie- thanks for such a wonderful comment and for reading my little blog
      totally made my night 😀
hope to see you around here more often!

Can you believe I’ve still only seen New Moon once?! The horror! I may need to remedy that this weekend…no, I WILL remedy that!

That chipotle almond butter sounds heavenly. Also, I LOVE Johnjay and Rich! I listen to them every morning when I’m at home (sigh…) and should listen to them online more often. The Christmas Wish is amazing.

I agree with everyone who said that you should not feel bad about dropping out of the race. Your physical health is what’s most important and there will be plenty of time for other races once your foot is feeling better!

  32. Tiffanie on December 8, 2009 at 8:06 am

Can’t remember if I already told you this or not, but I’m also running the Princess in March!!!

    • Fitnessista on December 8, 2009 at 8:57 am

whoo hoo! make sure to say hi to me while i’m huffing and puffing 😉

  33. Stephanie on December 8, 2009 at 2:38 pm

I dropped out of a race once. It was supposed to be my very first marathon in october of this year. I had signed for it a 11 months before. Well a lot can happen in a year, along with some personal health things and my dad being diagnosed with cancer, i had missed about 5 months of running and when i finally started running again, my heart wasn’t properly into training for one. I was upset about missing it for a long time before I finally accpeted that it just wasn’t my time. That there is always next time.

Don’t push yourself if you aren’t physically or mentally prepared to give it 110%. And if you’re injured, then obviously, just let it rest, theres always tomorrow. 🙂

  34. Michele on December 11, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Hi been really enjoying your blog for a while now and enjoying the tips and new ideas for eating – certainly feeling better. My big question is what type of dog is Viesa? See is so pretty and looks like a fox.
    You are a great inspiration!
