Our favorite bacons

Food-wise, lunches are usually my least exciting meal of the day. Since I’ll make them while serving Livi’s food, or they’re packed up to take to work, chances are that it’s a quick wrap or salad I throw together with veggies I’ve already chopped and/or roasted. Company-wise, they’re one of my favorite parts of the day because I’m either sitting next to Liv and talking with her, or blitzing through the kitchen on my lunch break, chatting with the fam and making an “afternoon jolt” (our pm cup of coffee) for nana and myself.

The fact that the usual lunch food suspects are pretty vanilla, it makes delights like this even more exciting:

TBLT: Tempeh bacon, lettuce and tomato

For the wrap, I used the freshest Swiss chard from our farm box (probably my favorite green), plopped with some Veganaise, hot sauce and sliced yellow heirloom tomato, tempeh bacon and rolled up. It was perfection.

Also perfection?

The fries at Zinburger:

(double truffle and sweet potato)

I also enjoyed my favorite Napa salad (with marcona almonds and goat cheese), while the Pilot enjoyed this Bacon Bloody Mary.

Bacon drink

That is an actual piece of bacon as “garnish”- needless to say, he was a fan.

What I loved the most was my little snoozing buddy.

Me and snoozing liv

She fell asleep in the car on the way to Zin. I thought she’d wake up as soon as we walked into the restaurant, but she was CRASHED out, like a heavy little noodle. I took advantage of it because she’s very adventurous and not quite as snuggly as she used to be. At night, I’ll try to lay down with her before bed and she laughs, bounces on me and tries to shove her hand down my mouth haha. She woke up just in time to enjoy her dinner and see everyone (the Pilot, my mom, stepdad, Kyle and Meg).

Time to “shake it to wake it” in world beat. See you soon!

Those TBLT’s look amazing! Where does one find tempeh bacon? Or can you just slice up some flavored tempeh and fry it up?

I totally love it when those wild toddlers get sleepy and let you snuggle them. I miss those precious infant times where all they want is to cuddle in your arms!

TBLT, I think so. I can’t wait to try this. What kind of tempeh do you use?

I have a hard time finding just Swiss chard by itself, but now I’m on a mission to! Those wraps look awesome.

I’ve never been a big fan of lunches either… mostly because mine are usually a boring sandwich or wrap that I can easily take with me to work. I’d definitely be a bigger fan if sweet potato fries were involved, though. Holy.wow I could really go for some of those right about now…

I may be way late to the party on noticing this, but you’ve changed your post style, mm? It’s becoming less daily report-like and more creatively crafted story…

    I dig it. 🙂

I love those little Tempeh bacon, lettuce and tomato wraps. So fun and perfect use for tempeh. I’m a huge fan!

And Liv and just konking out on you – so cute. And yes, I remember those days when the snuggles become less and less and they’re more interested in everything else. Enjoy your snuggles 🙂

I’ve never tried tempeh bacon before, but I’ve been very curious about it. Tempeh by itself can be a little on the bland side, so I’d be interested to see how much flavor you can get in there!

Oh Lord, my husband does NOT need to know that drink exists!! Haha

My son is the same way. He just wants to move, wriggle, and explore. He has never been a huge fan of cuddling even as a newborn. He’s been teething for a few weeks though and other morning at about 3:30 he woke up and was restless. I changed him and put him back down; still restless. So I fed him. Finally I just sat down and held him thinking he is not going to like this. Turns out, that’s what he wanted!! I just rocked him and smelled his sweet head for the longest time. It melted my heart <3

I can't wait to see your recipes and such for November!
I made that salmon salad that you posted recently. My mouth is watering right now just typing that. It was SO GOOD!

HAhah how cool is that drink- not sure I’d enjoy soggy bacon but?

    Namaste November — love that!

  17. Cher @ Weddicted on November 3, 2012 at 11:11 pm

The pic of those sweet potato fries made me so hungry! And it’s after 11p.m. Eeek! I don’t like bacon tempeh (I can’t get on board with the “smokey” taste) – but I think I’ll try those wraps with sliced up veggie burgers! Mmm!

  18. Nicole on November 4, 2012 at 12:05 am

Oh gosh me!! Tempeh bacon is super easy to make, too. I just marinate mine for 10mins in red wine vinegar, loads of chili powder, garlic, salt n pepper and paprika – pan fried babes. Tastes like bacon to meee!

Love the snuggle pic with Livi! I’m nervous that our baby isn’t going to be super snuggly, it’s my favorite.

Bacon bloody mary??! Um…. I’m about it!

  20. Vera Jones on November 4, 2012 at 9:12 am

Bacon Bloody mary really caught me. Definitely want to try it!

  21. Kathleen on November 4, 2012 at 10:51 am

I have yet to try tempeh bacon but it is definitely on my list now, that wrap looks delish!

I love your blog, started reading pretty recently. I am a runner but love branching out and trying new fitness endeavors and have gotten tons of ideas from you. Hope you are having a great weekend! 🙂
