Quads of Fire

My quads feel a type of pain that they haven’t felt in a LONG time. They’re quivering as I type this. Tomorrow’s AM training session should be interesting Winking smile

So how are you guys doing?? Hope you’re having a lovely night <3

I made it to NYC safely:

new york

and hopped into a cab to the hotel. The driver was awesome and we talked about Indian food- he was from the land of my favorite cuisine Smile

The hotel is SWANKY WANKY!

Bed:

bed

Powder room:

powderroom

(separate tub and shower. Lurve)

Sitting/blogging area:

TV + Kardashian drama

tv

Disclosure time: Gatorade is sponsoring my travel and accommodations to NY. They’re coming out with a new product (non food/beverage-related) that I’ll be testing out in my training sesh tomorrow. When I post about the training session, it won’t have anything to do with the product but will be about the actual training session and what I learn.

The best part about the room:

 sound machine

A sound machine! I use one at home every night (on the “rain” or “waterfall” setting) and am always a little stoked when a hotel has one. <—nerd alert

I settled into the room and went EXPLORING Smile

Have you ever seen a naked cowboy?

cowboy

I hadn’t either Smile

I’d eaten lunch, but my stomach was gnawing on my backbone. Determined not to ruin dinner tonight, I had a snack to quell the beast.

snack

A salad topped with teriyaki mushrooms and veggies, + spinach. It was perfect Smile

After snack, I met up with Gabriela to take my first Physique 57 class ever.

physique

My thighs. My abs. My life.

It was RIDICULOUS.

We did 3 main segments- arms, legs and abs. The class uses a lot of props- dumbbells, squishy mats, balls, straps, yoga mats- and is a combo of weight training, Pilates, ballet and yoga. The arm segment was feasible (hammer curls, rows, shoulder presses, dips, push-ups) but the legs and abs are what really killed me, and I work out these muscles pretty often.

Every single exercise was a *burn out* exercise– basically you felt like you couldn’t do any more, and then you’d change something and keep going. I LOVE workouts like this because they’re so effective- also, it keeps your attention because you’re constantly switching exercises. The instructor was incredible- so encouraging and made sure to check our form and correct everyone in class.

The only downside was that it was expensive ($35- my own dinero), but I’d definitely do it again.

Dinner time! I’m thinking dessert first…

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: What’s the last fitness class that really shook up your muscles? Today was a MAYJAH one for me, but the last one to challenge me in a different way was a yoga class I took at Canyon Ranch in AZ- we held each pose for 5 minutes! Crazy Smile

Woohoo sounds intense, but fun. I can’t imagine spending $35 regularly on a class, but once in a while would be a fun splurge for yourself.

  20. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on November 14, 2010 at 7:37 pm

“Have you ever seen a naked cowboy?”–

YES every day! I live in an extremely ecclectic area, predominantly gay men though. And I see them…daily. Not totally naked but very, very little clothing. I walk past many, daily 🙂 Ahhh, life in a big city keeps things fun and interesting no doubt!

Phys 57…I have heard AMAZING things about it!! WOW…sounds like I need to try it. I have resisted workout dvds, i.e. Insanity, Turbofire, Phys57…but now I want to get the Phys 57 one in lieu of a proper real-life class…your review has me intrigued!

  21. Janna on November 14, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Ahhh this made me miss NYC. So glad I’m moving back there in January! I am dying to try Physique 57 – but so so expensive. Maybe I’ll go once!

My kickboxing class that I’m doing now has a strength component with resistance bands that KILLS me!

What kind of sound machine do you have? I’ve really been wanting to get one!

    Have fun tomorrow!!!

    Looks like fun!
I agree with you one the switching up thing to keep you going and motivated.
My most recent workout routine is Jillian Michael’s “No more Trouble Zones.”
It’s fun and gives my muscles a good challenge.

  23. Laura @ Backstage Pass on November 14, 2010 at 7:43 pm

Oh, I love N.Y.C.! Too bad you aren’t there longer, there is a Sex & The City bus tour that’s really fun.
So cool that you got to check out Physique 57, any Kelly Ripa sightings? 🙂
The last class (well, it was a DVD) that shook up my muscles was when I tried the P90-X Core Workout. I was majorly sore the next day… in a good way, of course!

    • Fitnessista on November 14, 2010 at 10:26 pm

i wish there was a kelly ripa sighting! i love her 🙂

  24. Heather on November 14, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Physique 57 is AMAZING! I purchased the 3-set of DVDs and have not stopped doing them. I never get bored because I ALWAYS feel the burn. Definitely invest in them Gina. You would L-O-V-E them. [:

  25. Natalie on November 14, 2010 at 8:03 pm

And not to worry, I travel with my sound machine!!!!!! My kids each have one and so do my hubby & I 😉 It’s waterfall all the way with me!!!

I’m so jealous you took a Physique 57 class!! I love NYC. Next time I go, P57 is definitely on my to do list. They have dvd’s. Do you think they would be as good or worth it after taking a class??

    • Fitnessista on November 14, 2010 at 10:25 pm

from what i’ve heard, the dvds are just as challenging!

  31. Katie on November 14, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Bodypump Saturday morning kicked my booty! I couldn’t walk out of the gym after wards and it felt so good. 🙂 I felt like my legs were wobbling uncontrollably and I couldn’t get a straight step. 🙂

  32. Veronica on November 14, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Most workouts kick my butt, but the one that most surprised me was Zumba. Who would have thought a dance style class could provide a full body workout – I leave there a sweaty beast! Thanks for inspiring me to try it out.

    • Fitnessista on November 14, 2010 at 10:24 pm

      so awesome! zumba is cccrrrraaazzzyyyy

  33. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on November 14, 2010 at 8:48 pm

I love, love, love Physique 57!! I took my first REAL class at the Beverly Hills studio last week, and I’m totally hooked! 😀

…and I feel your pain! I took a 90-minute workshop with Shelly Knight yesterday morning (to learn all the proper form) and it was killer! My thighs hate me. And my abs. And my arms.

Hope you’re having a great trip in NYC!!

I went to a BodyFlow class with my mom at her gym the other day, which I haven’t been to in FOREVER. We started doing the chi-ball-moving thing, I messed up the direction once, and the instructor immediately called out, “Who’s new? You are!” But when I discovered the class was also full of ballet stretching, I happily focused on my releve form, and she then called out, “You must be a dancer!” Yay redemption!

What a timely post for me! Yesterday, I took my first The Bar Method class. OH MY!! I’m a pilates instructor/personal trainer, but it kicked my butt in a big way (and I think Kelly Ripa does some of these classes too). It sounds like it’s very similar to Physique 57, and we used free weights and ballet bars for the most part. The studio was beautiful, and everyone was wearing Lululemon! When I was in NY last April, I was in the studio audience of Regis and Kelly. That was an amazing experience. Have a wonderful time in NY.

  43. Christin@purplebirdblog on November 14, 2010 at 11:20 pm

I have heard all about the naked cowboy! In Austin we have the legendary Leslie, a homeless man who dresses in women’s clothing and hangs around downtown. He’s incredibly nice! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on November 15, 2010 at 7:03 am

don’t be nervous! just have fun and remember that zumba isn’t about doing it *perfectly*- the first time i went, i had no clue what the steps were. no one cared and i had so much fun!

ahhh NYC! we keep missing each other…I was there last weekend and you were in my hood (SF), and now you are there and well, i’m not in your hood…but well..you know what i mean! If i get a residency spot there, i will mos def try out Physique! I love that kind of work out!! One of the most challenging class I’ve taken was actually at NY sports club, a kickboxing class followed by strength/sculpt class…it rocked my world!!!

  48. andrea on November 15, 2010 at 5:26 am

come to vegas and try hottttt pilates mmmmm its amazing! its like a core, butt, arms boot camp in 100 degree and 40 percent humidity!! loveloveee

That sounds like a killer workout! I once took an ab class that worked my muscles a little *too* hard. I ended up straining my abs! 😛
