Queen of the salad beasts

Hey everyone!! It’s FRIDAY!!! Finally, huh?? Is it just me or did this past week last forever?? I’m totally looking forward to some chill time with the pilot and puppers 😀

Last night, my meals were a little hodge podge, but I did make the queen of all salad beasts:

002

Spinach, greens, 1/2 avocado, cucumber, eggplant, zucchini, red and orange bell pepper, tomato, goat gouda (I’m LOVING that cheese!! Mmmmmm), lemon juice, sea salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

I also had some bnut squash fries and some of that awesome coconut ice cream over the course of the evening, topped with vegan chocolate chips.

004

I had the fries with some unsweetened organic ketchup I found at Winn Dixie (Winn Dizzle) last night, and it tasted like pure tomato paste. I’m totally putting some Stevia or something in there next time.

007

I served the pilot some ice cream as well, and he killed it within a couple of minutes. Our convo:

Me: That was disgusting, huh?

Pilot: Yeah, hated it. Wait…..was that healthy??

Me: Of course it was… and you liked it 😉

Pilot: [Insert expletive here]. Well, that’s amazing

He was definitely a fan of the Coconut Bliss 😀

The negative connotations with “health foods” blows my mind. I’m lucky that I married someone who likes to try different foods and if it’s delicious, he’ll happily feast out. I also have a great group of friends who are health-conscious or adventurous when it comes to food and a family who knows exactly what I like to eat and fully supports my eating habits.

Quite a few times before, I’ve offered a snack/treat/meal/bar to someone and their response is, “No, that’s too healthy for me.” Too healthy?!? Whaaaat? And I’ve also had to deal with quite a few people in my life who did not like the foods I ate and openly bashed my choice to eat as cleanly as possible while they filled their bellies on junk food.

My friend Amy over at Veganissexy wrote a post called healthy habit haters which is something I think about every now and again. My friend Megan and I have had a lot of conversations regarding “healthy habit haters”. I don’t judge other people’s eating styles and would NEVER say anything to them, but feel like when you try to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself it can often put you on the chopping block for judgment.

When I first worked here as an area sales manager at a department store, I got constant rude remarks about my eating habits because I would pack my own healthy lunches and snacks to have throughout the (insanely) long days I worked there. I would never respond in a negative manner, but it definitely got annoying.

Have you had to deal with “healthy habit haters”?

The rest of our evening was pretty chill. The pilot went swimming and I dangled my feet in the water, he played Wii and I read, then we crashed out.

This morning I had some bing cherries to-go and took the puppies on their half hour walk.

008

They’re such cute babies:

005

006

When we got home, I made a lovely green juice with 1 pear, 1 apple, spinach and cucumber

008

Since I only have one training appointment today, I’m meeting my friend Emily for juice in a little while (yes, another juice for me… I will be having solid food today as well, hah) running a couple of errands, reading on my raft in the pool, workout, training, then making some dinner for the pilot and I 😀 Ahhh, I love Fridays.

Have an incredible day, friends <3

Love,

Gina

I've had several comments made about my eating habits at work. One time someone told me not to be such a stick in the mud when I didn't eat a cookie. It just gives me more motivation to eat better at work and continue on my journey to look and feel better when meanwhile they are complaining and hating their lives when they realize they're still fat.

I'm lucky to be in the same situation, my boyfriend enjoys trying new things. I think the healthy stuff TASTES better..its crazy to me to that people rule out healthful foods as something that is bland or disgusting. There are some great recipes and options out there, glad you are sharing them!

I've definitely had people tell me that I eat too healthy or make rude comments, but oh well I am happy with the way I eat and Isaac supports it and will eat anything I make (and usually likes it, because it TASTES GOODS!!) Healthy doesn't mean UNTASTY!

    Have a great weekend Gina.

  5. Lauren on June 26, 2009 at 10:51 am

Ahh, healthy habit haters drive me crazy!!! I have DEFINITELY had to deal with my fair share! Thanks for addressing this issue! Your salad looks delish, by the way. 😉

  6. Lauren on June 26, 2009 at 10:55 am

    One more thing…

Since I have an extensive knowledge of nutrition (i'm pursuing a career in medicine) family/friends often ask me for health advice. I tell them what I think, such as cut out this, add more of this kind of food, and exercise this way. Their response back, more often than not is, "Oh, I couldn't do that." Umm, then why did you ask? Do you want to live/feel better or not?! Ahhh, it's so annoying! Ok, sorry for my little rant ;P

  7. Danielle C. on June 26, 2009 at 10:56 am

Like you, I feel very grateful that my husband is open to eating just about everything (the only thing I can think of that he refuses to eat is pancakes, his parents fed them entirely too many as a kid).

I had a conversation with my sister's in law earlier this week about a family dinner I didn't attend a few weeks ago. Apparently my 7 year old nephew was happily eating a salad and our father in law made some comment about salad being for birds. That stuff just irritates me, clearly the child will EAT veggies and needs them. Who the heck says that to a 7 year old???

  8. katherine on June 26, 2009 at 11:00 am

I've definitely had to deal with "health haters" and I am so disappointed by that. I worry that the reason people do that is because they feel either intimidated by foods they haven't had, or they are battling their own diet demons and don't like the idea of another person being successful in their efforts to be healthy. Whatever their motivation, I generally just feel sad for people when they make comments because I really believe it all stems from insecurity and I just want to give them an Operation Beautiful post-it and remind them to be HAPPY and love themselves!!

  9. brandi on June 26, 2009 at 11:02 am

sounds like a great Friday 🙂

I've had to deal with some healthy habit haters, too. I don't understand why people think it's okay to do that to people who choose to be a bit healthier, but it's totally not okay for me to do the same thing to someone eating junk all the time. I don't judge people and would never say anything to anyone about their eating habits, so I just expect the same respect, I guess.

  10. Emily on June 26, 2009 at 11:03 am

There are definitely some healthy habit haters where I work – it gets tough; especially at parties or luncheons. I usually just shrug it off and try to ignore it, but I think it would be fine (and powerful) to say something about how the way I eat makes me feel like the best me. I'm not sure what someone could say to that. Maybe I'll try it next time! 🙂

  11. The Decayed Gentlewoman on June 26, 2009 at 11:05 am

I'd day, unfortunately, my biggest healthy habit hater is my dad. He is completely baffled by the fact that I don't eat red meat (or that much meat at all, really; while he worships at the alter of Dr. Atkins.) and also dissaproves of my running. He has told me that I'm going to be in a wheelchair with ruined knees and hips by the time I'm 40 (This from a man carting around an extra 100 lbs that doesn't exactly do wonders for his joints) and he and my Mom both hate that I run alone, even though I do in during daylight hours through a well populated college campus and park. It definitely is frustrating to hear his criticism and it sucks to go to home and be surrounded by lots of junk food and red meat.
When other people hate on my healthy habits, I usually think it's kind of funny, like when I brought a green monster into work. I enjoyed grossing people out. LOL.
My friend was once accosted by a middle aged woman in the middle of a restaurant, which was kind of annoying. She was eating a cup of soup (and waiting for her sandwich to come out, actually) and this woman came up and said "I hate it when I see skinny girls just order soup in a restaurant!"
Really, I think people do that because they want to justify their own unhealthy habits.

  12. Erica on June 26, 2009 at 11:18 am

Love the queen beast…I made a biggie last night too- so delicious 🙂 Oh, I def have met a lot of health haters! My office mate asked me the other day if I ever eat "real" food. Enjoy your fabulous day!!

  13. Mrs. LC on June 26, 2009 at 11:21 am

I think a lot of "healthy habit haters" come from people who have insecurities and wish they could have a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes I feel like subconsciously people want you to "mess up" (their thoughts, not mine) and catch you eating a cookie or something, so they can bring some sort of justification to their own lives. An old coworker used to always seem to delight in announcing my "bird food" lunches to the office, while everyone else went and got food from McDonald's, Taco Bell, etc. After a while though, she started to make excuses to me as to why she too didn't have healthy lunches, and that she does care about health and makes healthy dinners for her family. The ways people's minds work are really intriguing.

  14. Anna on June 26, 2009 at 11:29 am

    That salad looks amazing!!

Those healthy habit haters are SO irritating! I've been dealing with that from my friends for a long time, and it's not like I don't ever indulge around them (in fact, most of my indulgences ARE with them). People can be so snarky, but I really do think that 99% of it stems from their own insecurities. People seem so THREATENED by others who eat healthier than them- as if me ordering something healthier than them is analogous to me verbally insulting their choices or trying to make them feel bad. Like you said, I don't judge them, so why should they judge me?

People need to stop getting all up in each other's faces about their personal choices and RELAX.

    exiting soapbox now.

    Have a good weekend!

  15. heartswholefoods on June 26, 2009 at 11:36 am

The bnut fries are making a comeback ;). Love it when other people try healthy foods too–most people just assume that healthy food is not tasty but in my opinion healthy food can be yummier! I do notice people staring at me when I'm eating a salad as a meal or piling my plate with veggies, but I try to ignore it, but sometimes give in :/. Puppies are very photogenic! Hope you have a fabulous Friday!!!

  16. mgaltier on June 26, 2009 at 11:55 am

Like you, I am very, very fortunate to be married to a man who has different eating habits than I but who is nonetheless willing to try my healthful concoctions! He also sometimes cooks a recipe that I've requested even if it's something he's not too interested in, just b/c he's that nice.

I am also fortunate not to have healthy habit haters (love the phrase!) in my life. Although many of my friends eat differently than I, they don't make fun of my habits or otherwise try to undermine me. I try to return the favor by not complaining when the group wants to go to a restaurant I wouldn't have chosen. I find that EVERY restaurant has some sort of salad/healthful option on the menu, so I just eat as well as I can under the circumstances and enjoy the company.

Hmm…now that I think about it, there was one HHH in my life. She is morbidly obese, is very unhappy about that, and is suffering health problems because of it, yet she refuses to do a thing to change her situation. She eats nothing but large portions of junk food and does not exercise at all, not even a walk around the block. I never said a word about this–it was her life, and I always felt that it was not my place to tell anyone else how to live. However, it irked me that she would frequently tell me how "lucky" I was to be so thin. My weight and physical fitness have nothing to do with luck and everything to do with watching what I eat and regularly putting in time at the gym.

The final straw, and when I withdrew from the relationship, was when she made fun of me, on several occasions and in front of large groups of other friends, for doing Pilates because it was "trendy" and for eating salad when she was having burgers, fries, and sundaes. I was not about to tell her how to live her life, yet she made several very nasty remarks about how I was living mine. I decided that I just did not need that sort of negativity and stopped hanging out with her as much. I firmly believe that true friends support each other, even if that support extends to choices that are different than yours.

  17. Janessa on June 26, 2009 at 11:58 am

My battle with healthy habit haters is with my own family. I just graduated college and am living at home for a few months. My family thinks I'm crazy for wanting to eat as healthy as I do. My 3 younger brothers are physically very fit although they don't workout and eat unhealthy foods on a regular basis – they say they're on the all-processed, no fruits/veg diet. I am tired of their comments about what I will and will not eat. I know I have so much more energy when I eat healthy foods, but usually feel disgusting after eating processed foods. I love to cook, but making something my family and I can agree on seems impossible. I only wish we could come to some agreement so that I don't stress over the food choices for the next several months.

  18. Peanut Butter Swirl on June 26, 2009 at 12:09 pm

of course your the queen of salad beasts! love those fries too!!

since im still in my lovely teen years I get so much hate for my eats. Its super annoying. I can't go out with friends to eat sometimes because they constantly annoy me with "why are you eating salads, those are so gross" "have some fries their good for you" blah blah blah. My closest friends are great and don't care. I dont get why there is so much health eating hate! Its your choice what to put in your body…why should others care?

  19. mayapamela525 on June 26, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I totally know what you mean. I hate it when you don't want to have something not to be rude but just because you don't feel like fried-sugar covered junk. I like to indulge, but in things that I truly like and savor. Some things just aren't worth it and don't make me feel good, and then others perceive it as being on a "diet." It's tough, I don't have any suggestions but I'd be interested in hearing what your other commenters say!

I work with a guy who's only interaction with me is to imply that I'm bulimic and that I must binge and purge in secret because of the fact that I'm thin and he doesn't ever see me eat unhealthy foods. It's incredibly rude and insensitive and not to mention annoying!

Needless to say, I'm interested to read with how other people deal with such MO-RONS!

    Have a fabulous Friday 😀

  21. Julie on June 26, 2009 at 12:32 pm

My mom and most of my family (grandmother mostly) are alwasy making comments about my healthy eating. "is that all your having?" "aren't you going to have more?" "have more than a salad". They don't understand. When we have family cookout and bbq's my sister and I are the only ones who bring healthy food and snacks, everyone else brings mayo-drenched salads and desserts. I'm not saing I never indulge, but I like to make wise choices the majority of the time. It bums me out!

  22. Jennifer @ His N' Her Health on June 26, 2009 at 12:34 pm

People at work always comment on what I eat! So annoying. They say things like " you are eating bird food" or "that is too healthy for me". I usually just ignore as they chow down on Mcdonald's for the fourth time in the week. How would they feel if I made comments about their eating habbits!

  23. Ash on June 26, 2009 at 12:37 pm

I'm lucky that like you, my fiance is willing to try new things and not put them down before giving them a shot. I think he's even suprised himself!!

As for healthy habit haters – YES! I've definitely encountered some. I had a boss (who also had Crohn's) who told me that I needed to "live my life". For him, me choosing not to eat gluten, dairy, refined sugar etc was not living.

    Um, what?

I am totally living my life to the fullest and enjoying every step of the way! The healthy choices I make allow me to feel good which makes me even happier!

  24. Andrea of Care to Eat on June 26, 2009 at 12:47 pm

My co-workers give me "you know what" about my eats ALL THE TIME. So, I'm just as annoying back. Whenever they complain about being overweight, constipated, stomach ache, etc. I just tell them that if they ate better they would feel and look better. Or when they're eating a hamburger and "taunting" me with it, I say, "I hope you can sleep at night knowing some dude lost his arm processing that dead cow for you." Or, "Did you know that virtually all ground meat contains traces of animal feces?"
It's definitely more annoying to point out what you SHOULD be doing than to have somebody point out (even if it's to make fun) a positive in your life.

  25. Bren on June 26, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Hey, i never really comment on your blog but i am a big fan:) and the healthy eating thing is something i can relate to also. im a vegetarian and have pretty much been one since i was in high school. it seems to never fail that when people find out i always get some rude comment like something is wrong with me for eating that way…even my good friends still make comments about it. i just don't understand why people care so much what others eat!

  26. nibblesandwiggles on June 26, 2009 at 1:52 pm

I'll never get the "too healthy for me" comments either – and why someone wouldn't want to be healthy but anyway.

I was just talking about the healthy habit bashing the other day. I just hate when people comment on my food…

  27. Jenny on June 26, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Hi Gina. I have been reading for a while now but never commented. Mostly because I always think "Now, that is a silly question!" but today I will go out on a limb. I have a lot of HHHers in my life but since they are mostly family I prefer to think of it as misplaced concern (for example, my MIL's opinion that I must be "dieting" if I choose to eat salad instead of the hamburgers they are having and so then the "You dont need to lose any weight!" comments come) I use every chance I can to educate them about food choices without sounding preachy. Sometimes though, you can tell they just want to make (in their opinion) a "funny" comment and be done with it.
I do have a few questions I would like to ask you about budgeting and whatnot. I go to the Farmers Market and to the local produce stands not only to support my community but also to save money and that has been awesome but I must admit, I almost had a heart attack when I saw the price of Ezekial Bread at WF last week! I am curious to know if you have any money saving tips for things like that? Also, I soooo cannot afford a vitamix right now and I am curious to know if I would be able to make a smoothie with spinach or kale in my regular blender? I have been wanting to try for a while now but I would hate to take a big swig and end up with a whole spinach leaf in my mouth! LOL!

Thanks for being such a positive inspiration every day.

awwww cute pictures of the pupperonis!! 🙂

I am not a huge fan of people who say "that's too healthy for me". What does that even mean? haha It's a very strange way (not to mention unhealthy way) to think.

    Enjoy Friday!!

  29. Amanda on June 26, 2009 at 3:18 pm

It's nice to be among people who stand on the same healthy, fresh soapbox as me. 🙂 Yesterday I was at a work lunch where I ate nothing because it was a deli tray with exclusively highly-processed foods. Nothing fresh. Luckily I had my lunch in the refrigerator, so I simply said I wasn't hungry during our meeting and then ate my delicious lunch when I got back to my desk. It was easier than insulting the food and what other people ate. Processed food aside, if you're going to eat a cookie, at least make sure it's a good one! Those cookies were not worth anyone's indulgence.

  30. Leila on June 26, 2009 at 4:52 pm

it's so funny that you talk about "healthy" commenters. I bring a salad to work every day for lunch (I'm a creature of habit) and I always without a doubt have someone say "oh that's healthy." It makes me wonder why do people point out what's healthy, but not what's unhealthy.

And if unhealthy is so 'unusual' I'd rather be seen as a bit weird 😉

  31. Christina on June 26, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Luckily I haven't had to deal with any healthy habit haters yet! My boyfriend and family are pretty much open to anything so if I make them something healthy, they'll try it!

If coconut ice cream is healthy I have to get my hands on some! I didn't know there was such thing as healthy ice cream.

  32. Emily on June 26, 2009 at 5:35 pm

I've had to deal with those people, but the worst is when you're having a splurge/treat and someone says, "should you really be eating that?" ughhhhhhh! How rude!!

  33. Oh She Glows on June 26, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Yes! I used to be mocked for eating salad everyday for lunch when I worked in an office and when Andy worked his last day yesterday, they presented him with a chopped carrot and a bottle of juice as they all laughed at his healthy habits. Last night we talked about how odd it was that you're made fun of if you eat well.
    Gorgeous looking eats as ever.

I have to tell you, I LIVE on all the health food blogs. I am fairly new to them but I am looooooving the fact that there are so many people as interested in all of this as I am!! Every day my family (mother, father, sister) give me "crap" for the things that I choose to eat! Yet, they are the ones who have the "crap" daily on their plates. The thing that kills me is that I never judge what they eat yet they constantly have things to say about everything on my plate. Thanks for creating a place for me to find great ideas and a reason to keep focusing on healthy when no one around me does.

  38. Joelle (Chasing Pavements) on June 26, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Oh I definitely can relate to this post- an old roommate of mine would always criticize the way I ate. No matter what it was– a sweet potato, yogurt, veggie burgers– she would just stare while I ate and pass judgmental comments. It was frustrating, for sure! I solved that one by no longer living with her haha and ignoring her childish behavior.

  39. Gena (Choosing Raw) on June 26, 2009 at 9:03 pm

Oh girl. My life is just one "healthy habit hater" encounter after another. But ya know, I just do my thing — not point worrying about what makes other people feel better! Usually, I find that the healthy haters are very insecure.

Your salad looks amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing! As always.

Big hug to you, pretty 🙂

Hi there! I was wondering – why do you eat vegan choc chips since you arent vegan (or I assume you are not since you eat cheese?) Do you like the taste better? Or just find it to be healthier? I tried carob chips a couple years ago and found them pretty bleh…. but I would be willing to give them another shot if you recommend them! 🙂

  42. Gloria on June 27, 2009 at 1:21 am

seriously healthy heaters are everywhere. I deal with them everyday at school and at home. I love eating healthy and my goal is to become a RD. I got crap for what i eat every single day. I get comments like " oh is she eating healthy food again?" or try to force me to eat some poutine (fries with melted cheese and gravy) and people are always making rude comments about the way i eat and telling me I should eat some steak and burger. someone even asked me why am i working out since I am skinny anyway. It's just rude and annoying since I never said anything about their dietand lifestyle.I don't care if they eat poutine and pop everyday for lunch and get heart attack when they are 50. And another thing is alcohol, I always get weird looks from people when I refused to drink. After all most teens do not care about their health.
when I do feel like some treat like 95% dark chocolate( the darker the better=) or a cookie someone will comment on " why are you eating this, it's not healthy" I eat what I want and no one should judge others dietary preference like I never told them "you know your bacon burger has 900 cal and 17 g of saturated fat and more that your daily recommended amount of sodium."

  43. CaSaundraLeigh on June 27, 2009 at 7:43 am

I think Healthy Habit Haters are just jealous of the people who can eat and feel great! Maybe jealous of their willpower, motivation, etc.?!

  44. Julia on June 28, 2009 at 5:53 pm

This is a great issue to address – looks like many people who care about health and nutrition have dealt with a healthy habit eater at one point or another. My last roommate was definitely like that — she at one point told me that I was "obsessive" about eating healthy and went to the gym too much. For a while, I would try to explain myself to get her to understand — like the fact that I luckily grew up with a family who loved fruits and veggies, so it's what I actually liked to eat, and I have a desk job so it feels great to move around at the gym after work every day. But the comments didn't stop, so finally my one-liners ended up being things like "that's what I like to eat" or "i enjoy going to the gym." There's not much you can say about people's preferences, and it is especially helpful when going out to eat with friends and choosing something healthy. I just try to de-emphasize the "healthy" focus and state very clearly that this is my choice (whatever it may be).

And I think we all know that people like this usually have some sort of inward dialogue going on about health and nutrition and just happen to be taking out negativity on us. We don't deserve it, but all you can do is brush it off.

Congrats to all of you readers and bloggers who keep living life how YOU want to, at the healthy level that works for YOU 🙂 That is truly awesome.

wow it was so interesting to read everyone's experiences with the "triple h" as we shall call them 😉 just remember only you can make the best choices for your bodies, and it's pretty much no one's business what you choose to do! if they want to stuff their faces with cheeseburgers, they have a right to do that without nagging comments, as you have the same right to enjoy your salads/smoothies/wraps/healthy choices in PEACE!

jenny- the best money saving tip is to plan out what you're going to eat in advance. we don't really pay attention too much to prices, but rather the quality of the food we're buying, but by making a list and only buying what we need, we don't spend too much on food. as far as the blender goes, i definitely think it would work. just let it blend the smoothie for 2 minutes or so to make sure you don't get a tree bite 😀

My whole family is healthy habit haters! It’s so frustrating! Not only do they not at all support our attempts at healthy eating, they openly bash it!
