Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy 🙂

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

  16. Emily on October 5, 2012 at 7:54 pm

My fitness goal is to get back into a solid routine and build my strength back up.

  17. Jessica Gonzalez on October 5, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I love your blog! I just liked your facebook with my goal. I mentioned I have lost 15lbs this year and I have 10lbs more to go. At first it was so easy however these last 10 have been really hard for me. I’m in the military and unfortunately work 12 hr shifts…I believe that is what is causing the last 10lbs to be a problem. I’m trying to track everything but going from nights to days every other week is screwing up my body and eating. I would love to have this gadget to help me get back on track and lose the last 10lbs and reach my goal. Thanks for the chance!

I am a cardio queen and though I know the benefits of strength training, can’t seem to get myself to do it! My goal is to do it. I want muscle definition and I want to look and feel strong!

  19. Dawn on October 5, 2012 at 8:32 pm

My current fitness goal is to build more muscle and specifically lift my butt!

  20. Dawn on October 5, 2012 at 8:33 pm

  21. Lynne on October 5, 2012 at 8:40 pm

My current fitness goal is to do more gentle strength training. I do a lot of cardio already and am trying to add some yoga and pilates to my routine. I’ve only just changed up my workouts (past 3 weeks), but I feel such a difference already!

  22. Lynne on October 5, 2012 at 8:43 pm

I’ve already “liked” the fitnessista on fb 🙂

  23. Ellie on October 5, 2012 at 9:02 pm

  24. Kelsey on October 5, 2012 at 9:19 pm

After completing four years as a DI athlete, my current fitness goal is to learn to enjoy exercise and be motivated on my own. After years of “required” physical activity and steady competition, it’s completely different to workout for myself when I want to!

  25. Kalena on October 5, 2012 at 9:20 pm

    To run a half marathon:)

  31. sarah s on October 5, 2012 at 10:43 pm

my new fitness goal is simply to stay fit for the next year. my husband just deployed yesterday 🙁 it’s both of our first deployment and emotions are everywhere. while i’ve been consistently active since college, i want to make sure i don’t let myself have a pity party or start slacking just because i’ve got such a challenge ahead of me!

  32. Michelle K. on October 5, 2012 at 11:12 pm

My goal right now is to do a pilates roll up without lifting my legs!

  33. Michelle K. on October 5, 2012 at 11:13 pm

  34. Heather on October 5, 2012 at 11:18 pm

  36. Pam on October 5, 2012 at 11:22 pm

I’m currently trying to lean down (decrease fat). I’m having a difficult time planning to measure — I can do weight, but no way am I going to swap weight training sessions for cardio and lose weight (and muscle) and call that success. Would love a tool like this to actually understand my burn!

  37. Pam on October 5, 2012 at 11:23 pm

    Also, already a fan 🙂

  38. Reema on October 6, 2012 at 12:38 am

My fitness goal is to exercise in order to FEEL good, not just to look good! 🙂

  39. Sarah Elizabeth on October 6, 2012 at 8:58 am

Have you ever heard of the FitBit? It records all the same features as the BodyMedia device, but it’s cheaper and it’s dashboard is free forever. It’s so tiny I just clip it to my bra and go! It’s definitely encouraged me to take the stairs and walk more. I try to beat my previous records all the time, it’s fun and it’s good to know where I’m at with each day.
My fitness goal is to lose 40 pounds, but I want to achieve this by increasing my cardio endurance and my overall muscle strength and tone. It’s about becoming my healthiest and strongest.

  40. Laurie (BodyMedia) on October 9, 2012 at 12:56 pm
