Reader Review: BodyMedia Fit giveaway-ENDED

I’m kind of obsessed with fitness gadgets.

Run

Not really in the sense that I own a ton of them, but they fascinate me. For some, I can never get over how ridiculous (or inappropriate?) they are:

P39089BSource

and others, I watch and notice other runners or gym-goers using them before doing my own research and potentially committing to a purchase.

A couple of the things I thoroughly watched and researched before biting the bullet and getting my own: the iPod (it scared me for a long time, as does most technology, but it’s so much more useful and user-friendly than I imagined), the heart rate monitor (I use my Polar for almost every workout) and the Garmin for running.

I’m the same way with popular fitness DVDs. Even if I don’t commit to the workout or follow the specified plan, I enjoy watching them occasionally to get new moves for my classes and personal workouts. Some of the best I’ve tried: Physique 57, Insanity, Zumba, Shiva Rea and TurboFire.

The first time I did TurboFire, I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck some of the participants were wearing on their arms.

It wasn’t a heart rate monitor or iPod, so after a quick Google search, I found something similar:

A BodyMedia Fit device.

So what is it?

A device that assists with meeting fitness goals. You wear the armband throughout your day – it tracks how many calories you burn, how many steps you take, when you were most active and how much sleep you get. You can send this data to a computer or smartphone, enter what you eat and set goals. The activity manager keeps you on track with specific feedback about your progress.

Here’s an idea of what the dashboard looks like:

Bodymedia

You do have to have a subscription to access the dashboard ($6.95/month and first 3 months are free).

Anyway, when I first found out about it, I was excited to eventually add one to my collection, but after I became pregnant and wasn’t trying to reach any new fitness goals, I didn’t think it was necessary.

BodyMedia recently offered to send me one to try, but instead I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive their choice between the wireless device (which uses Bluetooth capabilities to transport data to your computer)

Wireless

or the Core (which connects to the computer via USB).

Core

This giveaway has ended!

Congratulations to the lucky winner:

(I did a random number generator for the page the winner would be on, then the comment on that page- so page 13, comment 11)

Since I didn’t hear from this giveaway winner in two weeks, I picked a new winner via Facebook challenge. (10/21)

Congrats, girl! Send me your info (fitnessista at gmail dot com) and I’ll send it along to the BodyMedia fairy 🙂

Thank you again to everyone for entering! Stay tuned for lots of awesome giveaways.

xoxo

I’m trying to drop my bodyfat and either over or under eating. This would help so much!!

  2. Sara S. on October 5, 2012 at 12:57 pm

My fitness goal (actually made this commitment this morning!): Stop eating free food at work, and do weights workouts three times a week! These two simple things will result in weight loss, and most likely will require me to bring healthy snacks to work.

My Goal is to finally get rid of this last 20 lbs by upping Cardio and lifting 2x a week. I need to also work on getting over my head in classes and pushing through. I feel so much better after… I like you on facebook.

  4. Cassie on October 5, 2012 at 1:00 pm

My current fitness goal is to strength train more regularly! I love it but haven’t been doing it as often as I like because I’m teaching a lot of cardio classes. Haven’t tried BodyMedia, but some friends love it!

You just made my day giving me another chance to enter! My goal is to keep losing weight! I’ve lost about 15 pounds, and I’ve got about 15 more to go. I’m also running in my first half marathon (EEK) on 10/13, so I’m pretty close to reaching that goal I set earlier this year. It’s been a long road, but I’m so anxious/excited to accomplish it!

  6. Ash V on October 5, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Also, I just went and “liked” you on Facebook!

  7. Melissa on October 5, 2012 at 1:10 pm

That looks wondeful! Right now my fitness goals are to get as much activity as I can. I’m in nursing school so that means alooot of studying. I run 3-4 miles a couple times a week, but with all the sitting I do for school I wonder how much activity I’m really getting! Also, I’ve been trying to do strength training more consistantly. Every time I do it semi-regularly I’m blown away by the quick results, but then I get lazy! or busy.. we’ll go with busy 🙂

I have been a fan on FB!! 🙂

That gadget sounds amazing for reaching fitness goals! My fitness goals right now are to get to a point when I no longer need to count calories to feel fit and healthy and to lean/tone! I currently have a desk job so I make sure I workout first thing in the morning to get my metabolism moving! Thanks for all your tips and advice on fitness and health!

  10. Katie on October 5, 2012 at 1:31 pm

My goal is endurance. I am training for a half marathon and would like to up my runs without injury.

  11. Amanda on October 5, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Oh – and I’ve been a fan on fb for a while 🙂

  12. Bonnie on October 5, 2012 at 1:54 pm

I have two fitness goals: increase my endurance and decrease my body fat percentage. So I’m in the gym now daily (except for the days when I work 16 hours). Would be thrilled to have this gadget to help see where I am, and motivate me to do better. Thanks for all the great fitness tips you post. P.S. I am a facebook fan as well.

My fitness goal: I am trying several different classes at my gym to find the right fit. I recently injured my knee and can no longer to my favorite spin class. I always have the treadmill and elliptical, but enjoy the class setting and sweating with all the different peeps!!

Fitness goal…get back into some good, sweaty workouts! Starting a new schedule has been kicking my booty & I’ve been a slacker at the gym!

  16. Lelde on October 5, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Mine? To get fit and even more healthy for my wedding next summer. It’s a huge motivator and makes me get my butt to the gym even when I really do not want to. 🙂 Body media fit would make it so much easier for me.
p.s. I just became your fan on facebook though i read your bog pretty much religiously. 🙂

  17. Angela on October 5, 2012 at 2:14 pm

My fitness goals are to increase my tone and to start lifting heavier weights (sometimes I am a weenie lifter). No more excuses 🙂

  18. Lori Z on October 5, 2012 at 2:24 pm

My fitness goals are to continue strength training but increase my running now that it is cooling down a bit. I also want to work on my flexibility.

  19. Jean on October 5, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I just had a baby so I am just looking forward to building my strength and endurance again while losing weight and am especially looking forward to doing all the normal yoga postures!

  20. Jen@HealthyFoodandFamily on October 5, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I hope it’s not to late to enter!

My goal is to get the rest of this weight off. I’m down 34 pounds so far and have another 40 to go. I’m using a hybrid mix of Turbo Fire and ChaLEAN Extreme.

I’m currently recovering from a herniated disc, so my fitness goal is to regain what I’ve lost after four months of bed rest. I’m looking forward to increasing my exercise from daily fifteen minute walks up to my goal of running a marathon!

  25. Meg on October 5, 2012 at 2:35 pm

    … And I’m a Facebook fan. 🙂

  26. Meghan on October 5, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Liked on Facebook! My goal is to increase my strength and muscle tone. I’ve lost about 35 pounds over the past two years by changing my eating habits and increasing my exercise. Now I’m at a point where I am happy/healthy with my weight and I am trying to increase my strength, especially to prevent injuries from running. I’ve been focusing on hip/core/butt to help protect my knees and I need to increase my arm workouts b/c they are by far my weakest link!

  27. Katie on October 5, 2012 at 2:47 pm

Just had my 4th baby 6 weeks ago, so my goals are increasing and getting back my endurance, toning, and losing the last 5 pounds!!!

  28. Katie on October 5, 2012 at 2:47 pm

    I’m also a Facebook fan!!!

  29. Rebecca Meier on October 5, 2012 at 2:51 pm

    I’m already a fan on Facebook 🙂

My fitness goal has ALMOST already been reached. I lost all my baby weight (22lbs from my baby born in Feb). Lost it rather quickly (matter of weeks) & without any exercise…it was easy peasy. BUT…since then my workouts have totally suffered. I used to go 5-6 days a week and do everything from weights to classes and cardio (cardio kickboxing is/was my favorite – did it all the way into my 9th month – woohoo!). However, now I’m lucky if I get to the gym on weekdays at all. I don’t get home from work until after 6 every and don’t want to miss spending time with my precious peanut (or the hubs), therefore, I’ve resorted to running in the EARLY am before work, but it’s not the same…and I LOATHE running…I’m still waiting for that time where it goes from being h-e-l-l to fun, like they say it will.

SO, my fitness goal is to get back into strength training, somehow, while still being able to spend lots of QT with my awesome munchkin….a fit momma = happy momma = making baby super happy! (In my case anyway) 🙂

Love your blog…and BTW, those 8 month pics of your precious Liv in your other post – adorable beyond words!

  30. Elisa on October 5, 2012 at 3:31 pm

My goal is to get my groove (a routine) back! I’ve signed up for a half marathon in January. Training for that, doing strength work and upping my yoga-ing is my focus. Thanks for the contest!

My current goal is to increase lean muscle mass (through winter), then in the spring I’d like to train for my first full marathon, ek!

  48. Taya on October 5, 2012 at 5:42 pm

For the next few weeks, my goal is to stay healthy for my first marathon! As soon as that’s over, its beck to the weights to gain back some of the muscle I lost during training!

  49. Taya on October 5, 2012 at 5:42 pm

    I’m already a fb fan! 🙂

  50. Denise P. on October 5, 2012 at 5:44 pm

My current goals are to ramp up my intensity/stay consistent. While I’ve been training for half marathons and a triathlon over the past month – I’ve let my fitness slide. Part of the blame could be on hot summer temps and part could be I’m caring for my mother during cancer treatment. But I find myself taking more and more rest days and I really want to make my workouts a must do again.
