At lululemon, we have a manifesto:

image manifesto

These powerful quotes are a great way to initiate conversations with guests and serve as friendly tips and reminders for a happy, healthy life.

When I put the call out for reader’s request ideas the other day, someone suggested that I do a top 10 list of my favorite health/fitness tips. I decided to take it a little more general and do my top 10 list for everything and anything – almost like my own manifesto 🙂

1. A salad beast a day keeps the munchies and boredom away. Salad beasts are my all-time favorite lunch or dinner. There’s a thousand different combinations out there, and an easy way to get a ton of nutrients. A properly balanced salad beast will keep you full and satisfied for quite a while.

beast

2. Get a pet – they make life richer and more fulfilling.

3. Splurge on classic, save on trendy. I like to think of my clothes in “cost per wear” – if it’s something that I’m going to wear over and over, it’s worth the extra dinero, instead of a trendy top or dress that I’ll wear once or twice. Workout clothes count, too. If I’m in athletic clothes every day, you can bet your luon-covered booty I’ll be making sure it’s quality stuff 🙂

clothes

4. Move everyday. It can be intimidating to begin a fitness program because many people believe they need to go balls to the wall everyday to make it count. So. Not. True. Just MOVE everyday – it will add up and I promise you’ll feel a difference in your energy levels and jeans size. There’s no need to go crazy with the exercise if you’re combining it with healthy eats.

5. Make time. As a busy bee myself, I know how it feels to have a schedule that’s bursting out of the seams. However, when it comes to friends, my husband and family, I make time. My friends know that if they need me, I’ll be there in a second, and the Pilot knows that I’m down for a random date or movie night anytime. At the end of my life, I’m going to look back at all of the fun I’ve had and be thankful, not at how much I worked.

6. Get yo juice on. Having a daily juice does wonders for my skin and is an easy way to get fruit and veggie servings. Oh, and it tastes foodgasmical.

7. Devote yourself to a regular yoga practice. You’ll stretch, focus, prevent injury and learn valuable lessons that are applicable to everyday life. Yogi falls. Yogi gets back up. Yogi transforms into a stronger person. 🙂

8. Treat everyone you meet like they have 24 hours left to live. Kindness goes a loooooong way.

9. Get what you want out of life- obstacles just make the ride more exciting. Have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, declare your goals, draw on others for support and GO for it.

10. Dating a loser jerk? Dump him, ASAP. I promise that there’s someone out there who will treat you like a queen.

us (2)

Before I met the Pilot, I was in a two-year relationship with a crazy person, who harassed and verbally abused me. When I finally broke ties with him, I thought my life was over. I was heartbroken and had little self worth – it was a very bad summer. Two months later, I met the Pilot at Starbucks! Everything happens for a reason <3

What tips or quotes would you include in your manifesto??

I can’t wait to read them 😀

Enjoy your morning and I’ll see ya later today!

xoxo

Gina

Very inspiring post, thank you for sharing! I would add “When you wake up, thank God everyday for at least one thing in your life.” Doing that helps me appreciate simple things and always be conscious of His presence in my life.

  2. Brittany on February 4, 2011 at 12:52 pm

GREAT post! Especially love #8. What a beautiful approach to treating others.

  3. Maddie on February 4, 2011 at 12:54 pm

My mom gave me some great advice a few months ago when I was going through a difficult and jealous time in life. She said “Don’t compare yourself to others. Instead, take what you have and make yourself happy with what you’ve got. Find a way to make a change in your life if you want something instead of being upset about it not being there.” What wonderful advice and it made me a much happier and satisfied person. 🙂

  4. Caitlin (EatFeats) on February 4, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Love it! I don’t know what I would include in my manifesto, but now I’ll have to consider the question!

  5. Katie on February 4, 2011 at 12:57 pm

I think i must say this one of my favorite post’s ever by you! I too feel that you should treat everyone with kindness! I treat people the way I would want to be treated, and the mean people I kill with kindness! I have too big of a heart to live life any other way ; )

I too dated a total jerk for 5 years, and I wish I would of not wasted 5 years being with him, he cheated on me, verbally abused me, and just treated me like I was worth nothing, to make himself feel better, but I dont regret it, everything I went through made me stronger and taught me a lesson, and now I am happy and have an amazing man now : )

Love this post and cant wait to meet you! I feel we have alot in common and we are going to click and have fun : )

  6. Shayna on February 4, 2011 at 1:01 pm

LOVE THIS POST! I loved the part about kindness. I’ve never seen it that way before. It can be so easy to just look out for yourself and rush on with whatever else is going on, and not bother with others.

On point number 4 – what kind of workout pants are those?? I’ve been searching for something similar.

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:58 pm

      anything by lululemon 🙂

      • Shayna on February 4, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Is that a don’t remember any more, or lululemon is superior. Most of my workout gear is lulu, I’ve loved it for years, but I’ve been searching for pants just like the ones you’re wearing in that picture.

        • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 7:37 pm

They’re the wunder under crops- sorry I thought u were asking where I get my workout pants

      • Shayna on February 4, 2011 at 7:18 pm

Oh wait. Just reread your answer. sorry. By not but.

I don’t think those pants are lulu though…

  7. Midwestern Magnolia on February 4, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Seeing you and the pilot makes me want to go to Starbucks every day of my life. : )

  8. Anna on February 4, 2011 at 1:17 pm

your blog always inspires me, and motivates me.
I’ve always tried to live by “dream like you’ll live forever, live like you’ll die today” but your one about treating people as if they have 24 hours to live makes so much more sense!
Seriously, your blog is so addictive. My laptop broke last week and I still managed to read your blog everyday!

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:57 pm

      aww, thanks anna 🙂

  9. Bethany on February 4, 2011 at 1:19 pm

I love love love this post. I think it’s my absolute favorite post from you! All your tips are fantastic! I think one of my tips would be to never stop learning – as in, read books, newspapers, anything I can get my hands on. Knowledge is SO important! Another one would be to try to give anger a rest – I’ve had some unfortunate things happen over the past few months and it’s been really hard for me to let anger go, but I’m trying to live as positively as I can. Again, great post!

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:57 pm

      thanks! <3

  10. carpensm @ A Life Without Ice Cream on February 4, 2011 at 1:22 pm

My #1 is probably “Focus on the positive” There’s always a silver lining to everything and you only hurt yourself by focusing on the negative. This also works for bad self-talk… if the negative ideas creep in push them out with the positive.

  11. JRM on February 4, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Love this post! Also, love how supportive your dog is of your yoga practice. LIke she is sitting there going “Go Mama, go”!

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:57 pm

yes, bella is a good yoga cheerleader 🙂

  12. Dynamics on February 4, 2011 at 1:29 pm

You have one thing in common with all successful people:
twenty four hours per day. It’s how you use them that
    makes all the difference.

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:56 pm

      AMAZING

  13. Dynamics on February 4, 2011 at 1:30 pm

I love quotes. Here is another favorite.

If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.

  14. Val @ Balancing Val on February 4, 2011 at 1:46 pm

I couldn’t agree more with the MOVE everyday statement.

I think a lot of us get caught up on how hardcore everyone is about running or taking classes or whatever!

You don’t really have to do all that, you just need to do what fits into your life and roll with the changes.

    🙂

  15. Liz on February 4, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Such an inspiring manifesto 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  16. megan @ the oatmeal diaries on February 4, 2011 at 1:49 pm

I don’t often comment but I had to on this one just to say how much I LOVE all your tips! I try to practice each one of them! (Well, except juicing because sadly I don’t have a juicer, but I do like green smoothies). Looove that photo of you and the Pilot!

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:55 pm

      thank you <3

  17. Amanda (Eating Up) on February 4, 2011 at 1:50 pm

We have that manifesto hanging in our apartment!

  18. Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun on February 4, 2011 at 1:57 pm

What a fun post! I think the kindness one would be big on my list. And going for your dreams. Also that our bodies deserve respect.

  19. Katie~ Run For The Bikini on February 4, 2011 at 2:02 pm

    Love It!

I’m all about “Fake It Till You Make It” right now 😀

  20. Katy @ RecipeCan on February 4, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Great tips! I really like #10 🙂 Good relationships, both romantic and platonic, are important to a healthy lifestyle.

  21. Clare @ Fitting It All In on February 4, 2011 at 2:16 pm

LOVE your tip about treating everyone like they hae 24 hours to live. I need to work on that!

  22. aylin @ GlowKitchen on February 4, 2011 at 2:28 pm

I love the “Treat everyone you meet like they have 24 hours left to live” one–this is something I need to work on. I feel I’m oftentimes too much in my own bubble of a life that I forget to be present with everyone. I think SMILING as much as possible is a great manifesto that I am trying to do more of!

  23. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on February 4, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Gina, I LOVE this!! I think everything in your manifesto is so important and true, and I especially love the part about treating people like you’ve got 24 hours left to live. You’ve inspired me to think about this a bit more and create one for myself. Thank you! 🙂

  24. Sassy Molassy on February 4, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Those are great words to live by. I simply loooove the lulu manifesto. So many positive thoughts. The other day I looked at my lulubag and read one I’d never seen before. That which matters the most should never give way to what matters the least. Mmm…

ALso, I was going to ask you if you’ve tried Shiva Rhea’s Trance Dance video? I know she’s a bit cooky, but the whole thing seemed kind of hilarious to me. I guess I just couldn’t get behind it. Anywho, just wondering if you’d tried it. I don’t think it’s dance trance, but I don’t know since I’ve never taken a class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRou8B31Hic

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:54 pm

shiva rea is a NUT. and a love her 🙂
dance trance is totally different- i couldn’t get into the trance dance thing either 😉

  25. Kirby on February 4, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Beautiful post! As a type-A perfectionist, I love the quote, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Doing something is better than doing nothing at all!

  26. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on February 4, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I love your manifesto! Everything from the clothing tip to doing yoga!! to dumping losers. Amen!

Mine would include, eating foods in their natural state as much as possible that have been around for thousands of years. Get back to basics, get back to nature, as much as possible.

Also, rules are meant to be broken 🙂 Don’t live your life only by rules. Have fun and cut loose and break some rules every now and then. In food, life, exercise, diet, everything!

    🙂

  27. Stephanie @ Walking my Talk on February 4, 2011 at 3:11 pm

    I love your manifesto!

Mine would have to include “Laugh every day” and “Be proud of your life”.

  28. AJ on February 4, 2011 at 3:36 pm

What a fantastic post. All those tips have definitely made my day better! : ) I too was in a relationship with a bad dude. He was an alcoholic who was verbally and emotionally abusive and somehow, I thought I’d never live without him. I too, met my now “Prince Charming” the same year I broke up with McLoser. My life is 100% different and better now I that I realize NO ONE should but up with abuse and that I deserve a healthy and fufilling relationship.

  29. Annette on February 4, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Great post! Another addition would be “pray daily and constantly” and “be grateful”!!! 🙂 and “DANCE every day!!”

  30. Shannon S. on February 4, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I have read your blog for a long time, but I have never commented before, except to try to win those yummy looking macaroons. 🙂 This post was just what I needed to today to remind myself that there are LOTS of things to be thankful for.

My addition to your list would be the “conscious”. I try to be conscious about everything I do – in my relationships, my work, and how I live my life. I even have it tattooed on my wrist to remind me when I forget. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:53 pm

thank you so much for saying hi- totally agree about being conscious. it’s so important to be present and aware in everything you do

  31. Emma on February 4, 2011 at 4:03 pm

This is a really amazing post! I agree with everything you said, we should all try and live by these points.

  32. alicia on February 4, 2011 at 4:12 pm

I recently read in a mag that those who write themselves a nice letter daily, are happier. I have been trying to think of little things that I do each day that were good. I stay at home with my kiddos and sometimes the days just flash by. Yesterday, I did not get to get my WWO in, but I did drink lots of water, sit and cuddle with my baby, got school work done, and installed my baby carrier on my bike! I can’t do EVERYTHING Everyday, but I can do SOMETHING everyday.
What a great post!! I do need to be kinder to others, I’m not mean, but sometimes it’s just hard to reach out to others.

  33. Christine (The Raw Project) on February 4, 2011 at 4:22 pm

Wonderful list, thanks. And congrats to the winners! I would add to run through a mental list daily of what you have to be thankful for.

  34. Tracy @ Commit to Fit on February 4, 2011 at 4:26 pm

I love numbers 8 and 10 🙂 The lululemon manifesto is fantastic. The one I would add is, “create your own opportunity.”

  35. Mellissa on February 4, 2011 at 4:32 pm

I have really learned how important friends and family are, the last 3 months have been horrible and my true friends have really shown themselves. When a 7 year relationship ends you realized how intertwined your lives really are!

  36. Jessica on February 4, 2011 at 4:50 pm

I recently signed up for my first triathlon, and the registration form asked for my personal mantra. I wrote, “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” by Napoleon Hill.

Growing up, my mom always said “Reach for the stars” while Dad suggested, “Be BIG. Be a builder.”

    Great post 🙂

  37. Heather on February 4, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I was dating someone for 2-ish years who was a total jerk too. It took me a long time to see how much he was bringing me down. In the end, I realized he was verbally abusive…and an all around not-nice guy. I took the very brave step to end it, got my swagger back…and 6 months later met the man I’m going to marry this September. It’s an amazing feeling to meet that perfect person. I know how hard it must be for you to be away from your husband. My fiance went to Guatemala for a semester last year around this time and I remember ringing in our Valentine’s Day every so romantically via a bad Skype connection. Hope you get him home soon! Have a great weekend.

  38. Jen R. on February 4, 2011 at 5:12 pm

Ahh Gina you are so wise 🙂 Loved the point about the pet – they make every single day more interesting because they just enjoy the simple things in life. I would add eat breaky even when you don’t think you really want it (or at least drink breakfast).

  39. Ashley (whole-ier) on February 4, 2011 at 5:12 pm

What is it about yoga mats that makes a dog want to plop down on it while you are getting your yoga on?

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:51 pm

i have no idea but bella loves it 🙂

  40. Jennifer (take the day off) on February 4, 2011 at 5:16 pm

How did you know that your hormones were unbalanced in the first place, other than the sleep issue? And how will you know if the Detox did the truck to get things back in line? (no problem if that is too personal!)

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:51 pm

i had a blood test and saliva dna test- both will be done again when this is all over

  41. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on February 4, 2011 at 5:18 pm

Love these! Esepcially the last one- no guy deserves our attention if he’s gonna treat us like crap!

  42. MMiller on February 4, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Loved this post! After being in more than one life or death situations (I have had Cancer 3 times) and then losing my sister to cancer, you really start to look at things differently! The impact you have on people makes such a difference in your life and in theirs! Make sure you tell people how you feel about them, and thank them for what they have done for you! We are still hearing new things that my sister had done that impacted so many peoples lives! She was so loved and admired! And I have so many people tell me how I am inspiring them! I am just trying to live my life the best I can! People may not always remember what you did, but they will usually remember how you made them FEEL!

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2011 at 5:50 pm

it makes my heart happy to hear that you’re doing well now <3 lots of health and happiness to you my friend

bella sitting on your mat is so cuute!! i had to do a second-take to make sure she was there! hahah. love the manifesto. i agree with all of yours esp the salad and yoga everyday and being kind to everyone…also i also believe in “making it happen!” if you want something in life, get it and make it happen!
p.s. <3 the emu oil!!! i wanted to wait til my period ends this month and it's almost over…NOT a single hormonal pimple!!! xx

Having a career you love is so important!

One of my mantras is: “Kiss him like you mean it, every single time.” A real kiss can boost even the worst of moods.

P.S. My dog sits on my mat too and every time I do a push-up I get a puppy kiss.

  48. Rebecca on February 4, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Thank you so much for this! I was having “one of those days” and this post served as a really good check-in of sorts.

On a completely unrelated note, where did you get the red dress in the pic of you and the Pilot?? It is SO adorable!!
