Salty and Sweet

Hey hey hey 😀 How’s your day been?

flowers

Mine has been crazy per usual, but bueno 🙂

I’m so glad you guys liked this week’s WMOW! If you have any requests for next week, please let me know- I was thinking of an ab burner?? Also, I’m very excited to see your inspiration boards.

A couple of recent eats:

Larabar

larabar

This afternoon, I enjoyed a not-so-photogenic salad with quinoa for lunch (the salad part got totally soggy from the hot quinoa), plus a bag of seaweed snacks. Salty and delicious 🙂

quinoa

It didn’t take long for our house to turn into a raw food bakery 😉

dough

I’m in the process of making some raw chocolate tarts 🙂 <— recipe is linked

cashews

One for each of the roomies, and one for a client of the madre’s

tarts

Roomies were out-of-town for Christmas and are both vegan, so I figured it would be a nice surprise for them when they get home in a little while 🙂

Confession time: In life, I’m a neat freak. In cooking, I’m kind of messy

mess

I like to sprawl out, take care of biznazz and then clean when I’m done. Some people clean as they go, but I’m not one of them 😉

I clean up nice, though…

clean

When the Pilot is around, I cook and he cleans, or we cook together and clean together.

Well I’m off to read and chill! See ya in the morning <3

xoxo

I am so jealous of your crafty baking skills 🙂 What a nice roomie you are!

  2. Evan Thomas on December 27, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Your roomies are so lucky! I would love someone to surprise me with vegan tarts now and again.

  3. Annie D @ Annie's Simple Life on December 27, 2010 at 9:31 pm

I’m soooooo going to try those tarts.

  4. Kristin on December 27, 2010 at 9:32 pm

Those tarts look delish. I got a kitchenaide for christmas, so will hit that up soon. Just wondering what you’re reading currently. I’m in the middle of Freedom by Jonathan Franzen (Oprah’s pick before Dickens) and it’s amazing. I’ve loved all the books you’ve mentioned so far…

  5. Christin@purplebirdblog on December 27, 2010 at 9:37 pm

I too make a god awful mess and then clean it all in one fell swoop! 🙂

  6. nicole on December 27, 2010 at 9:44 pm

I’m a mess in the kitchen too, but cleaning gives me something to do while it’s in the oven. I know you’ve posted that recipe before but I’m going to take another look after I made that raw chocolate biscotti recipe and it came out so beautifully!

  7. Jessica @ Jessica Balances on December 27, 2010 at 9:47 pm

I’m verrrry messy in the kitchen! 🙂 I don’t know how not to be! People who clean as they go impress me like whoa.

  8. Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow on December 27, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I’m a mess but am neurotic about cleaning as I go! Can be a bit of a scene to say the least. 🙂

  9. Laura J. on December 27, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I’m a clean as you go person– It will take me forever to actually cook and bake something. I put something back right after I use it, I’m clean up spills as soon as they happen– I think I need help, ha. You’re way sounds much better!

  10. Laura J. on December 27, 2010 at 9:50 pm

    Gaa I mean *your.

  11. Sana on December 27, 2010 at 9:53 pm

James has a rule the we can’t eat until we clean the mess we made. I love him for that

  12. Leah @ Why Deprive? on December 27, 2010 at 10:10 pm

I clean as I go, and after if that makes any sense. I put away all my ingredients as I go, and I clean spills right away. But the big stuff like dishes, those can wait for days. 🙂

  13. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life on December 27, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Oh my gosh, I’m the same way when I cook…a complete mess! 😯

  14. Allison @ PickyEatingRD on December 27, 2010 at 10:19 pm

I am a clean as you go type person. My boyfriend likes to wait til we are done cooking and it drives me crazyyyyyy!!!!!

  15. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on December 27, 2010 at 11:08 pm

I am the same way too, especially with studio projects. When the project is going on, my desk is a complete distaster, but once I’m done and can take a deep breath, I have to do a mass clean!

  16. Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete on December 27, 2010 at 11:10 pm

I am a neat freak in real life too, and an absolute mess when it comes to cooking/baking. I’m always covered in food along with the walls and floors. If I need to mop, I always wait until AFTER I’m done cooking for the day because there is no point otherwise!

  17. Maryann on December 27, 2010 at 11:21 pm

Yum! What a great roomie 🙂

  18. Stefanie on December 27, 2010 at 11:34 pm

I am a total neat freak and I do the same thing while cooking! It’s a huge whirlwind and then I clean up afterward! Works for me. 🙂

  19. Gina on December 27, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I’m the same way! Neat freak in real life and a mess in the kitchen. When I was making frosting for my Christmas cakes, me and the kitchen were covered in confectioners’ sugar.

  20. Shanna @ Shanna Like Banana on December 28, 2010 at 12:01 am

I’m a horribly messy baker, but super clean in real life. Baking gives me unadulterated carte blanche to do whatever I want 🙂

  21. Laugher-Loving Stacy on December 28, 2010 at 12:04 am

Those tarts look so good! I’ve never heard of a cashew nut crust! I can’t wait to try it! 🙂

  22. Katherine on December 28, 2010 at 12:08 am

What lucky roommates! I would love to come home to homemade vegan treats. 🙂

  23. Namaste Gurl on December 28, 2010 at 12:59 am

Looks yummy whatever your cooking up! 🙂

  24. Allison @ Food For Healing on December 28, 2010 at 1:08 am

yum that looks good even though it wasn’t finished!

  25. Heather on December 28, 2010 at 1:26 am

I am the exact same way! After I get done, it looks like a tornado swept through my kitchen!

  26. Jamie on December 28, 2010 at 2:50 am

What are seaweed snacks!? And where does one get them?

    • Fitnessista on December 28, 2010 at 2:50 pm

crispy nori bites from trader joe’s 🙂

  27. Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind on December 28, 2010 at 6:25 am

So, I’m not a sweets person. It’s not that I don’t like them, I simply don’t like the way they make me feel; HOWEVER, I would totally get down with your dessert creations.

With nothing but stellar ingredients, they’d fit right in with my mega-clean diet. HOLLER for having the ability to make healthy sweets <– almost an oxymoron!

  28. Lauren on December 28, 2010 at 6:50 am

Gosh, I’m the same way! People would never know this about me but cooking, I am a complete messy disaster. Good thing I don’t let it show. 😉

  29. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on December 28, 2010 at 6:59 am

I am a neat freak all the way around….I can only let the kitchen get so messy before I just have to stop and tidy up! Well 95% of the time. The other times, well, it does get crazy outta hand sometimes…but hey, it’s good to embrace the inner messy cook, right? 🙂

  30. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on December 28, 2010 at 7:24 am

Need to make those raw tarts. They look so yum. I’m SO messy when I bake…there’s always flour and crumbs EVERYWHERE!!

  31. Val @ Balancing Val on December 28, 2010 at 8:11 am

I am so organized and crazy about nearly every aspect of my life . . .

    EXCEPT cooking!

I throw crap around in my kitchen, use 5 million utensils and I get crap all over myself in culinary school. I guess that truly is where my creative side comes out 😉

    Glad I’m not alone!

  32. shannonmarie on December 28, 2010 at 8:25 am

I think your quinoa salad looks delicious. What did you use to flavor the quinoa? Is that balsamic?

  33. Ali on December 28, 2010 at 8:30 am

I’m typically the opposite…a mess in life and clean as I go in the kitchen! 🙂 Jealous of your roomies, I wish I had someone to cook for me. 🙂

  34. Felicia (A taste of Health with Balance) on December 28, 2010 at 8:38 am

It depends how much I’m making and how many steps it takes on whether or not I need to clean as I go. If its cookies I wait till the end, but if its a huge production, I like to try and clean somee if things are getting out of hand 🙂

  35. jenna on December 28, 2010 at 8:49 am

I would have thought you would be really neat even when cooking! thats funny! Usually, I’m a clean as I go and the rest of my life is a disorganized mess! 🙂

  36. Mo on December 28, 2010 at 9:07 am

I like to clean as I go – and I have a need for a super clean slate to start the day with! My husband, who I refer to as 12 pot Pete (he uses up 12 pots for anything he cooks), is not neat at all. He’s a great cook, but I usually offer to clean up. It works better than making him feel bad by cleaning up after he already thinks he’s cleaned well enough. Have a good one!

  37. Faith @ lovelyascharged on December 28, 2010 at 9:19 am

I’m such a messy cooker too, it’s kinda sad. The kitchen usually looks like a war or tornado zone after one of my baking sprees!

  38. rebecca lustig on December 28, 2010 at 10:04 am

i’m a messy cook/baker but i clean as i go or else i get all worked up! haha

  39. Katy (The Singing Runner) on December 28, 2010 at 10:56 am

I bake for people all the time. I am always trying out new recipes and need to get rid of the sweets….my friends think I am trying to make them fat! 😉

  40. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on December 28, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I think the only reason I don’t bake more is because I hate the clean up process! 😛

  41. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on December 28, 2010 at 12:32 pm

I’m a clean-as-you-go type baker. A messy kitchen while I’m cooking totally stresses me out.

  42. Alyssa on December 28, 2010 at 6:00 pm

    I am the messiest cooker/baker ever. It’s a disaster when I’m done!

  43. Katie on December 28, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Oh I am such a neat freak but in the kitchen, look out mess! lol!

But yes I clean up nice after too!

    Rarw tarts look delish!!!!!
