Save the room

Hi friends! How’s your Friday been? Mine has been a crazy whirlwind, but still had time for a workout and lunch with the girls 🙂

Today, I ran errands to get supplies for Sunday’s housewarming party,

cleaned the casa

stairs

[vacuuming stairs is no joke]

put the guest room together

guest room

sparkle-fied the kitchen

the master bathroom

and picked up the last of the random junk we had laying around in the master bedroom.

master

[lamps just need to be hung up]

As much as I love how much everything is coming together –I’ll post all of the before and after pics on Sunday- I have to say, the master bedroom is my least fave. The balcony (pic above) is AWESOME, but our bed area is kind of blah.

bed

The pink Snoogle stays, though 😉

It needs some kind of art or mirror above the room – something exciting. Let me know if you have any ideas! <—feel free to link away <3

Before lunch with the girls, I munched some eggs with salsa

eggs

and dinner was courtesy of my friend Renee.

pizza

She makes lovely gluten-free pizzas and organic creations 🙂

Bake and cook-stravaganza just started over here…

Have a lovely night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo

Something to do: 30 burpees or modified burpees! It doesn’t matter how long it takes, but you’ll feel like a million bucks afterwards 🙂

    Enjoy your evening of cooking!

Sooo, when should I arrive for the dinner party? 😉

      6 sound good?

    Bigger bed? ;P

      that’s a given. haha

Your casa is really coming together and looking so nice! 🙂

Is a big mirror above your bed too cheesy?

Good luck with your house guests!

  4. mi-an on August 27, 2011 at 12:00 am

need a bedframe, something above the bed like a nice big mirror/or painting…let me look around

  5. TheHungeredOne@MovingandMunching on August 27, 2011 at 12:01 am

I agree, that bed looks so tiny! Maybe it’s just the picture. Good luck on your housewarming party! Your house is beautiful 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 12:02 am

our bed is a FULL! insane. i have no idea how we slept on it for 3+ years… we pulled it out of the pod and were like “omg, our bed is so small!”

  6. Anna B. on August 27, 2011 at 12:05 am

For a really nice pop of color I hung a fabric thing from my grandma’s friend that she got in Hawaii. It’s like a tapestry but really thin.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OspEnqD6ZjZ-nF2QVXqY47GkAffIpvLSTUvuN3Xz2E8?feat=directlink That’s what mine looks like. But I think you’ll want to go with something different.

Based on the way that you have the rest of the room decorated I think something simple would work best for you guys. I actually think that few photo ledges would be nice for you guys. Something like this but less than this. http://images.crateandbarrel.com/is/image/Crate/ArchetypeWallDisplayJB07?extend=110,110,110,110&$web_zoom$&wid=598&hei=598 (From Crate and Barrel)
You could easily get a few nice photos canvas wrapped, and use those to fill up more of the space. I think it would be a really nice way to kind of show the progression of you and the Pilot being together since you can easily add or remove from it at any time. 🙂 By the way, LOVE your casa.

  7. Rachel on August 27, 2011 at 12:05 am

Getting a nice bed frame (I’m a big fan of the platform in a dark(ish) wood myself) will help shape the room, paint is definitely your friend, and I would google “master bedroom decorating ideas” and see what pops up.

  8. Rachel on August 27, 2011 at 12:07 am

Ooh and a window seat chest (i.e. big wooden low chest/storage bench with a cool cushion on top near the balcony maybe? Or two small ones?

    • Rachel on August 27, 2011 at 12:10 am

And it probably wouldn’t cost too much to make your bedroom look like that hotel you two like to stay at in Jacksonville either. My master bedroom is my oasis, as it should be, should be for everyone.

      • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 12:13 am

you’re right, it totally should be. and it’s my least fave room in the house!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 12:12 am

      that’s a great idea!

      • Rachel on August 27, 2011 at 12:32 am

        The third picture down http://fitnessista.com/2011/03/beach-time-and-fashion-friday/

I can totally see that being your master. I’d pick a bit darker colors for the curtains though. I love that end table on the right, so cute and cool. The two you have now are nice, but more suited for an office I’m thinkin. Always a good idea to keep the walls a neutral paint color (not not white, something warmer and more reflective of living in the desert) and add pops of color in the accessories because they can always be changed when the mood (or a really good sale at HomeGoods or World Market) strikes without too much effort. Lowes or Home Depot is an Awesome place to get some great free advice on how to make a design come to life too. Good luck! And get a book deal soon please, I want that macaroon recipe! <3 🙂

        • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 12:40 am

          so awesome. you’re amazing!

          • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 12:40 am

and that would totally work, because our bedding is pretty much the same (it’s the canyon ranch bedding)

          • Rachel on August 27, 2011 at 12:53 am

Aww thanks! You’re the one with the good sense to stay in an awesome hotel in the first place. I really like the paint texturing they did behind the bed frame too, all you need is one of those fake coral bath sponges to recreate that. I wouldn’t go for a full room of that kind of texturing (hello 1970!), but a medium size square of it is beautiful and modern, go figure. And the framing can be scaled back a bit too in terms of thickness and width of the boards so it’s more in line with the size of your master, say an inch wide instead of three and then a thinner fabric for the back curtains instead of a heavy tapestry type curtain. Love that chaise lounger they have on the left, that looks pretty awesome for naps, nursing and hanging out in general. Whatever you decide to do, bring a picture of what you’re trying to recreate and the folks at the home depot or wherever will literally give you the list of stuff you need. Aint life grand? 😀

  9. Meghan on August 27, 2011 at 12:07 am

The place looks amazing, but I know what you mean about the master bedroom… I hung a long narrow mirror above my bed and it looks FAB 😀 I wonder if I can send you a pic somehow!?

  10. Daisy on August 27, 2011 at 12:10 am

I’m a big fan of a headboard with a cluster of prints or mirrors over it, to me it helps break up the wall & provides a nice, symmetrical visual.http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4004497 Something like that (I’d group in 4 or 6 myself). I think you mentioned you are upgrading to a larger bed in the near future so in the interim some plywood, cotton batting & a fun, fresh fabric could really create a “fancy” headboard for minimal price that you wouldn’t feel bad about getting rid of once you upgrade. There are tons of DIY instructions on how to make them. I also think adding a simple bench to the foot of a bed really adds something (and gives you a nice spot to sit to put your shoes on!)

  11. Danielle (Shrinking and Studying) on August 27, 2011 at 12:13 am

I am so jealous of your kitchen and his&hers sinks in the bathroom. In fact, I love every picture of your house you’ve posted (minus the scorpion! 😉 ).

I have the WORST eye for decorating, but maybe a quilted headboard? I totally get that you might want something to hang though since you are considering getting a bigger bed. Maybe some bamboo wall art to match your bedside tables? I always thought the framed bamboo was really cool.. http://www.completebamboo.com/bamboo_wall_art.html Haha, I might be completely off on your tastes, but it could work.

  12. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on August 27, 2011 at 12:23 am

All of the house pictures look great! <3 can't wait to see more!

I think you should paint a warm tone 🙂 , get a fabric headboard or a regular headboard, hang some artwork over the bed… and new nightstands… <—I feel like Im being ruthless. Sowwy.

I think you should find a great frame and wait until your peanut is born – then get a great black and white of the three of you and Bella.

      • Rachel on August 27, 2011 at 12:58 am

I would personally put the famiy photo on the wall of that awesome staircase though. Having a behbeh picture right above the bed, or within eyesight of the bed might a bit um, distracting when you’re, um, *napping*. Haha! Just sayin! 😀

The house is coming together nicely. Decorating is fun, although I wish I was more creative. I saw an interesting idea to use wrapped newspapers to make a side table. I was impressed with the table, but never would have been so clever. I rely on IKEA far too much **blushes**

  18. Audrey on August 27, 2011 at 2:02 am

A nice big headboard would look awesome and definitely give your bed a pick me up. I think the bed is just looking small and out of place in the big room.

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 10:56 am

it just looks sad and lonely 🙂

  19. queenoffitness on August 27, 2011 at 2:10 am

agree with the others on the headboard ideas (quilted) or get a rich wood headboard/footboard. pottery barn catalogs always have so many unique and interesting ideas. i usually peruse that for inspiration. you most definitely need a bigger bed. i am just curious because the photo is deceiving whether you have room to anchor your bed on the other wall (with your feet facing toward the door) or is that bad feng shui?? it looks like you have an alcove area there. i think beds look awkward anchored on a wall with a door….just my humble opinion. also, paint the wall your bed is on a different color. change your ceiling fan (or light)…seriously makes a huge difference (home depot has some really nice ones in their stores), change your blinds to a rich wood or faux wood and put a nice curtain on each window. right now your rod is way too thin and long for those curtains. if you got a thicker rod in a deep color (espresso or black) it would look nice. most home improvement stores have finnials that you can buy to put on the ends of rods if you want to customize more. i would also consider hanging the rod higher on the wall and getting longer curtains. you need a nice comforter or duvet with some color, fold or throw a quilt or luxurious blanket at the end of the bed and get yourself a bench or put two square/round stools at the end, some nice lamps (my husband and i actually have mismatched ones with similar tones and size), and some nice bed side tables again in a rich color. i am not a huge fan of wall clutter so we bought typewriter letters with our first initials and a & symbol. above our bed says “E & H” with the type writer letters all spaced the same distance apart in between the ends of the headboard and hung all at the same height (stole that idea from PB!). you could also spell love, calm, sleep or something like that or hang 3 pics the same way (leaves or something nature-esque since you have a leaf motif). we also changed the elec outlet covers in most of our rooms. you can get these at home depot too. the littlest details seem to make the biggest impact on a room. also maybe you could put a nice dresser on the wall near the door with maybe a mirror above it to reflect light. …SORRY i am getting so carried away. i love space planning and i watch a lot of HGTV!!! good luck!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 10:55 am

amazing!! thank you for all of the ideas!

  20. Dynamics on August 27, 2011 at 2:43 am

I think a headboard is in order. Or possibly a picture you have taken.
    http://www.canvasondemand.com/options/canvas-photo-splits/

How about solid nightstands? I know now you do not even have to have them match.

My mom puts her bed at an angle and it looks awesome.

  21. Natalya on August 27, 2011 at 7:33 am

I agree that a headboard would tie it together, but I saw a great design idea that gives the feel/look of a headboard but with more function… You put a shelf above the bed and can set frames or vases or whatev on it. It has the same effect as a headboard but the bed size doesn’t matter and then you can put pics or flowers on it 🙂

  22. Hillary on August 27, 2011 at 8:21 am

Your kitchen is to DIE for!

I love the idea of some big mirror or art hung above the bed. Not even one piece, but maybe a gallery of smaller pieces?

  23. Stephanie on August 27, 2011 at 8:25 am

re: styling the master bedroom…hmmmm…is a headboard in the budget? I think that a bed looks more “grown-up” when it has a headboard. But that’s just me!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 10:53 am

you’re totally right. the bed just needs to go, in general haha

  24. Crystal on August 27, 2011 at 8:37 am

A headboard would probably help. And something like a large piece of artwork or maybe a framed photo of you and the Pilot (wedding photo?) with wall sconces on either side above the bed. I also think some new nightstands would help. Not sure how your room is set up, but sometimes putting the bed next to a wall isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing. I hope this doesn’t sound too critical!

  27. Katie on August 27, 2011 at 9:14 am

A headboard is a must and a bigger bed! I always had a full size bed too, but when Mike and I got serious and moved in together , we got a queen, which we feel is too small still, lol! We decided when we buy a house next year, we will get a king and put the queen in the guest room ; )

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 10:53 am

we’re definitely going up to a king… my snoogle takes up more than half the bed 🙂

I just recently changed up the wall behind my bed and I love how it turned out. I saw somewhere a while ago that someone had put letters that spelled out “Mr & Mrs” above their bed so I took that idea and ran with it!

  41. Kate Z. on August 27, 2011 at 1:57 pm

You will get there…it is more appreciated when it is a process. Good luck

  43. Deva (Voracious Vorilee) on August 27, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I would start with a bigger bed and see how it fills the space (or measure and tape off around your current bed), and then buy either a west-elm or pier-one type bedframe, or get a quilted headboard. I would get some night-tables with reading lamps that fit your favorite decor style (I don’t have a reading lamp by my bed right now.. sad face!). We haven’t hung any artwork above our bed yet, but I want to – probably a photo from when we toured Fenway Park last year, but poster-sized!

Hi! First of all, your house is gorgeous. Second, I’ve been wondering for a while now if you have some sort of hispanic in you? From some of your comments, “cucina” decoration, etc. and your recipes, I’ve been thinking perhaps you speak spanish. am I totally off?

  46. Sheena on August 27, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Dang is that a full size bed?!?!? I guess that’s okay since it means more cuddly time 🙂

I think you should get a tall padded headboard. It will fill up the wall and give you a nice polished and put together look. You can buy one or if there is a particular fabric pattern you like, have it custom made for you. If you are crafty and handy – you can even make one DIY for almost nothing. I have come across many tutorials on this online and seen this done on HGTV. I have a padded headboard and drilled it into my wall so that it wouldn’t move. It’s nice for when you want to sit up in your bed for reading or maybe even nursing. Everything looks great though and can’t wait to see the final pics!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 3:49 pm

YES. we’re hopefully getting a new one soon

  47. Carrie on August 27, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I don’t have a headboard either and was looking for some ways to jazz it up. I ended up purchasing some refurbished “artwork” (I’m not sure what it was before, but they refinished and framed in) at a huge salvage here in Des Moines. Unique and awesome, it really adds to the room.

  48. Melissa on August 27, 2011 at 4:54 pm

How about a gigantic enlargement of your latest ultrasound to put above the bed, at least for now. Would that be weird? Or cool?

Place your bed at an angle. This is the only picture I could find, but you get the idea. My mom has a plant behind her bed, a round table on one side and a small dresser type nightstand on the right side. You walk into the room and it looks amazing.
