Similar Dragons

Hi guys! Happy Monday- hope your day is going well 😀 Thank you for your amazing Sunday comments. I loved reading them on the way back to Valdizzy 😀

As you guys know, the pilot and I both have a horrendous terrible cold/virus/something or other. Some people lose their appetites when they’re sick… it takes a lot for us to lose our appetites 🙂

hot bar

We made a stop for hot bar on the way home from Atlanta.

hot bar (2)

I loaded my container up

hot bar (3)

With

-wheatberry salad

-sesame quinoa

-dal and spinach curry

-vegan mac n’ cheese (with a nutritional yeast sauce!)

-kale + carrots

with Indian spiced soup on the side 🙂

The drive back to V-town was easy –I was a good sport and drove half the way!- and then we stopped to pick up this little monkey.

bella

And this little monkey:

vies

I missed them so much!

You’ll never believe what we braved to fight this cold/virus/whatever….

garlic

We each an ENTIRE thing (head?) of roasted garlic.

When I tweeted out the call for get-well solutions, I got a lot of advice to eat garlic. It’s very antibacterial and a great source of antioxidants, so we decided to give it a whirl.

I LOVE garlic, but this was a little hardcore. We were similar dragons last night 😀

Other things we’re been doing:

LOTS of Emergen-C

emergen-c

(If you use less water, it tastes better- so we always use little espresso cups)

Sleeeeeeeeeep + Fluids

Fiery Goji Smoothies for B-fast

goji

-1.5 C almond milk

-1 banana

-1 scoop Vanilla Sun Warrior

-1 T goji berries, soaked overnight in water (for antioxidants)

-1/8-1/4 t cayenne pepper (great cold remedy – helps congestion and sore throats)

Blend up in the Vita-Mixalicious and slurp happily with a glass straw 🙂

I’m off to pack the pilot some lonchi –he’s still going in to work, poor guy- and am going to start cleaning the vacation tornado 😀

See ya this afternoon with some Zumba stuff and a final re-cap of this past weekend’s fitness conference.

Have a great day!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: What do you do when you’re feeling under the weather?? Anyone else fighting the sickies right now?

I totally do the garlic thing! Also, a netti pot has helped me in the past. I’ll feel it coming on and use a makeshift netti pot and the next day it’s all good 🙂

Good old sleep and rest! Pho or spicy Indian food also make me feel better when I have a stuffy nose.

    Hope you feel better!

I have a pretty nasty cold myself. And I don’t lose my appetite when I get sick – in fact, I get hungrier when I’m sick. No idea why. I drink hot lemonade with honey to help with the cough that came with the cold, and it really helps! All you need to do is juice half a lemon into a mug, then fill the mug halfway with water. Pop the lemon/water mix in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, add honey to taste, and drink.

  6. Jodie on August 2, 2010 at 10:03 am

We use garlic, but also honey and lime/lemons. More of the fresh lemon/lime juice than honey, but it works wonders. Feel better soon.

  7. LisaG on August 2, 2010 at 10:06 am

Love hot & sour soup. Get the Main Squeeze to make ya a wellness cocktail.

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 10:10 am

EXCELLENT idea! spence will make me some kind of elixir

  8. rachael on August 2, 2010 at 10:09 am

Whenever I am sick I drink fire water. Put honey or maple syrup (about 1 teaspoon) on the bottom of a large mug and add ginger (I press it through a garlic press to juice it), cayenne pepper, the juice of half a lemon, and fill with hot water and stir with an ice-tea spoon. It tastes good and always makes me feel better. I also find vitamin D, probiotics, and elderberry syrup to be helpful. Hope you both feel better soon!

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 10:10 am

      that sounds lovely, thank you!

  9. Paige @Running Around Normal on August 2, 2010 at 10:12 am

omg you both ate an entire garlic clove? That IS hardcore! LOL Did you eat it on anything?
I hope you get to feeling better soon!

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

no we ate it plain with a little sea salt and olive oil

  10. kyla on August 2, 2010 at 10:14 am

I also have something right now! Lots and lots of flem, lovely, huh?

  11. RhodeyGirl on August 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

My grandfather lived to be 106 and every morning he took a shot of olive oil and ate one clove of garlic. I never remember him EVER having a cold or anything. Neither does my dad.

Hope you and your pilot feel better!

  12. Sandra on August 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

Awww, feel better guys! The little one and I just got over a nasty summer cold. Lots of sleep, OJ, green tea, and water. And some tylenol thrown in for good measure when I got achy. She braved it with fluids and one dose of Motrin.

  13. Kelsey H on August 2, 2010 at 10:26 am

sleep and lots of water! i also use emergen-c, but just try to not eat a lot of sugary stuff and drink herbal tea too. hope you feel better! i’ve been having some sort of cold/sore throat thing too. thank for reminding me about the garlic! i always mash mine onto a piece of bread or something bc i’m not that hardcore yet:)

  14. Ilana on August 2, 2010 at 10:34 am

I just caught a cold (or something) from my mom who was up at summer camp and caught whatever the kiddies were passing around (gosh I hope this isn’t strep). I can’t really handle a lot of garlic so it’s GINGER and MINT tea all day right now. I made a crazy herbal smoothie with tons of ginger and mint and chili powder and basil and lavender and some fruit and spinach to try to knock this outta me – worked for a bit but eventually the post-nasal drip returned. I also got the boyfriend sick so last night we curled up on my couch with a vat of ginger tea and Netflix … that’s my favorite cure haha. Except I’m still sick … beh. Okay, I’m off to infuse my blood stream with more ginger!
    Feel better!!

  15. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete on August 2, 2010 at 10:50 am

Wow-I don’t know if I could eat a whole head of garlic!

I try to sleep as much as possible, take hot baths/hot showers and drink lots of hot water w/lemon.

I hope you feel better soon!

  16. Laura J. on August 2, 2010 at 10:51 am

Wow, a whole head of garlic?! That’s hardcore! Do you think it helped at all? Hope you guys start feeling a lot better soon!! 🙂
When I’m sick I like to curl up in bed with magazines, catch up on the DVR and drink tea…buuut I have 2 kids under the age of 4 so that never happens anymore, ha 🙂 I definitely do the Emergen-C thing, green smoothies and sometimes I just gotta break out the tylenol cold.

    Feel better soon!

  23. Jennifer on August 2, 2010 at 11:08 am

I totally do the Emergen-C packets!! When I was in college(music major), all the teachers would recommend and swear by Emergen-C and drinking lots of tea, especially for us singers to get our voices back in gear. Plus vocal rest. 😀 Feel better!

  24. Jessie (Bites and Pieces) on August 2, 2010 at 11:10 am

Aww, hope you guys feel better soon! I usually take echinacea and drink lots of fluids when I am sick.

OMG that picture of Bella! Sweet, sassy molassey!
For a cold, try dis: slices of ginger, squeeze of lemon juice, a squirt or two of Sriracha hot sauce, and very hot water. Courtesy of Martha Stewart’s everyday living blog.

yes bell is quite the sassafras 🙂
i’ll try that- i think i have everything on hand!

  26. Ami on August 2, 2010 at 11:17 am

You think roasted garlic is bad? When we were kids my mom would literally mix up a tablespoon of ghee with some salt, turmeric and mashed up cooked garlic as ointment for our throats. Then she would proceed to force-feed this to us until our throats were coated fully. Then the final kicker – no water for an hour after this. It kills all the bacteria and is really good for your immune system, but man you seriously can’t go out of the house all day because you smell like crap.

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 11:22 am

hahah! whoa, it sounds like it would work though

  27. Emily (For Sweets Sake) on August 2, 2010 at 11:22 am

Feel better! I hate feeling sick, but I rarely get a cold so when I do it’s a nice chance to relax for a day and have an excuse to do nothing 😉

  28. Tyffanie on August 2, 2010 at 11:33 am

Good morning! My weapon of choice to fight a cold is lots and lots of sleep. I seriously try to go to bed at like 9pm or earlier and sleep until 7am or 7:30am before I absolutely have to get up and go to work. I have found that eating healthy foods, having my daily green monster and going to the gym have helped me fight off colds even better or when I do get sick, it hasn’t been nearly as terrible as before. I also don’t normally workout when I am sick, even if it is a head cold only. Maybe I will do some yoga, but I try to let my body recup for a few days before putting strain on it.
Hope you guys start feeling better soon!

That’s so crazy that you guys ate so much garlic!

When I’m not feeling well I drink a lot of water and hot tea!

  30. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on August 2, 2010 at 11:48 am

I use Emergen-C when I’m sick, too, and I totally agree that it tastes much, much better with less water.

  31. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on August 2, 2010 at 11:49 am

You should have spread the roasted garlic on some bread. It is really good that way! Tastes like butter!! Amanda, above, is right, though. If you’re still feeling under the weather make sure you get lots of fluids. Hope you feel better soon!!

  32. Christy on August 2, 2010 at 11:53 am

Hope you’re feeling better! Do you use dried goji berries in that smoothie? Or whole ones?

  33. Run Sarah on August 2, 2010 at 11:53 am

Whoa, an entire head of garlic – that is hard core! I find sleeping a lot and tons of rest is the best way to make a quick recovery.

  34. Astrid on August 2, 2010 at 11:53 am

I love roasted garlic. The whole thing is a bulb. This really makes me want to buy a bulb of elephant garlic. That stuff is AMAZING! The cloves are so big that you can spread them on bread or crackers (or anything). I do not get sick very often, but when I do, it is all about tea and making sure that I keep my nutrition up.

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 11:59 am

BULB! that’s right 🙂 hahah thank you

  35. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on August 2, 2010 at 12:01 pm

Sorry to hear you’re sick! When I’m sick, I find that sleeping a LOT really helps– I spend at least half the day in bed, and I’m almost always on my way to recovery by the next day!

Also, hot herbal tea with lemon and honey makes me feel better, along with lots of Emergen-C! (I like using less water with that, too!)

Love that you made a stop to Whole Foods on the road! Those veggies look yummy. And holy cow, I can’t believe you both ate that garlic. I always knew you were hardcore, but WHOA! When I’m sick, I also gulp down as much Emergen-C as possible and sleeeep. I usually get sick in the first place when I’m not getting enough zzz’s!

  38. Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine on August 2, 2010 at 12:12 pm

I’ve been to that WF! 🙂 (I live in ATL). I didn’t know they had vegan mac and cheese… I wonder if it’s good?

Whenever I’m not feeling well, my mom gives me tea with honey or raspberry jam. With a lemon slice on top. + I drink lots of water and take lots of naps. I hope you feel better soon! <3

  39. Mandy A on August 2, 2010 at 12:31 pm

So sorry you and the Pilot still are not feeling well!

For me, I try to take it easy when feeling that bad… lots of rest on the couch with some good movies, hot tea and vitamin C!

    Hope you feel better quickly!

  40. Becky on August 2, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Gina, My hubby and I are still battling this monster cold too and he went to work today, though I think now he’s sorry he did. I’m drinking acai green tea right now, had a green smoothie this morning. We get hot and sour soup from our local chinese place, and also eat chicken soup with lots of added hot sauce. Also I just read last night that THROAT COAT tea is good because it has slippery elm and licorice root in it, & we tried it and it worked! It stopped the cough that the cough syrup didn’t !!! HTH’s ! Feel better soon!

That is the only one I have not looked yet. Thanks!

  43. Mimi on August 2, 2010 at 1:02 pm

You are so brave to eat that whole roasted garlic. Although roasted garlic is really delicious, I prefer to have it in more moderate portions! Keep us updated on if it helps fight the cold! (And feel better soon!)
