Soul Food

Hey everyone! Happy Saturday! How’s your weekend going so far?? I’m feeling like a new person after 11 hours of sleep… when I went to bed last night, we had been awake for 20 hours! I happily made up for it last night 😀

After we got into Tucson, we were greeted by my familia, then stopped by the madre’s for a little while before I had to go to the dentist. One hour of teeth scraping later, my mom and nana picked me up and we met everyone at my little bro’s basketball game.

bball

(The guys in the stripey shirts were playing for the white team)

I forgot how intense high school basketball games are! It was fun, even though I never imagined that I’d be cheering for my rival school, Sabino. My little bro goes there and I went to Sahuaro, back in the day 😉

After the game, we came home and got ready, and then all 12 of us (my grandparents, mom, stepdad, two brothers, my bro’s girlfriend, the pilot’s friend, and the pilot and I) went to La Parrilla Suiza, where they have the best green salsa I’ve ever had.

I had about a thousand unpictured chips dipped into said foodgasmic salsa. I usually don’t eat the chips and salsa, because once I start, I can’t stop, but last night I just rolled with my hankering 😀

I usually get the tamales, but ordered something different last night:

SHRIMP FAJITAS 😀

fajitas

Oh how I love ze little shrimp.

The fajitas came with an awesome coleslaw with purple cabbage and a light vinaigrette and some guacamole – I asked for extra slaw instead of tortillas because it’s soooooo good 😉

And had frijoles with no cheese, which rocked my face off.

beans

I wanted to swim in them.

Mexican food is my ultimate soul food. It just reminds me of when I was a youngin’ and makes me so happy 🙂

I crawled into bed when we got to the madre’s and fell into a Mexican food baby coma. T’was glorious.

This morning, we’re going to hit the gym and then say hi to the dadoo’s family before going SHOPPING!

Have a wonderful Saturday and I’ll see ya soon <3

xoxo,

Gina

Despite growing up on Italian and Eastern European food, the stuff I crave most often is Mexican and Asian. Go figure. A good homemade pierogy takes me back, though!

  5. Michelle@Eatingjourney on January 9, 2010 at 11:33 am

I love Mexican food. In Australia NO ONE can make it well. It’s gut wrenching to go out to mexican here and they have a pumpkin, sunflower seed burrito w/ rosemary.

    it’s just wrong

    • Fitnessista on January 9, 2010 at 11:34 am

      hahaha that’s definitely a little different 🙂

It’s not my heritage, but Mexican food is my favorite. I could eat it every meal and be happy. Love the idea of the slaw, wish they did that here!

Love Mexican food, but it’s so hard to make healthy choices with it. I often have the shrimp fajitas, though 🙂 Shrimp’s my favorite!

  20. Lexi on January 9, 2010 at 1:53 pm

I love shrimp fajitas! I always order that when I go out for mexican. I love mexican food so much, but I would have to say that indian food is my ultimate soul food.

  22. Run Sarah on January 9, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Chips and salsa are my weakness at Mexican restaurants! I’ve decided to stop buying tortilla chips at home, so when I go out I can enjoy as much as I want.

I am catching up on a few days of posts, and when I read that you held the dog while the pilot fixed her carrier on the plane, I temporarily forgot that you were talking about your husband and I was like “whoa, the airplane pilot fixed her dog carrier?”…..and then I realized.
I am glad husband/pilot helped while pilot/pilot flew the plane.
Have fun in AZ–I am so jealous–I lived there my wholeeeeeeee childhood and it is the greatest place on earth.

  30. Leah on January 10, 2010 at 12:31 am

Those fajitas sound so good! Fajitas are my favorite thing ever. I just love mexican food.

  31. katie on January 10, 2010 at 11:12 am

Mmmm that food looks amazing! So glad you’re enjoying time with your family! I totally understand the exhaustion-we drove down to Florida on Friday, after I got off. Even though I slept a couple hours in the car, it was 24.5 hours Between times that I was in a bed. Craziness.

  32. Kalli@fitandfortysomething on January 10, 2010 at 11:59 am

    Love shrimp fajitas too!

  33. Tyler on January 10, 2010 at 12:18 pm

I wish I had some good Mexican restaurants close by! Those look delish! I’ve been trying to find the Mandy Ingber Yogalosophy DVD, do you know where you can buy it by chance? I’m all up in Amazon’s business and I can’t find it to save the life of me. Maybe Best Buy?
    Thanks!
    Tyler

YUM. I am in California and mexican food is 1) as authentic as you can get without being Mexico and 2) delicious here. I have about 4 favorites in town alone. Glad you had a chance to indulge on your trip! Mexican food is my absolute fave.
