Stowaway Vita

Hey guys! Happy almost-Friday! Hope you’re having a great day so far <3

I can’t believe how many of ya’ll were shocked/wondering if I brought my Vitamix with me to the Bahamas…

well…

vita

Heck ya I did 🙂

This girl likes her smoothies wayyyyy too much to leave the beloved Vitamixalicious at home 😉 The pilot donated half of one of his suitcases for the base, and the actual blender was in my big suitcase, stuffed full of swimsuits and surrounded by clothes to keep it from breaking.

I also brought protein powder, peppermint tea (which I don’t think I’ve written about much on the bloggy- I have a few cups a day and LOVE tea), Stevia, homemade Fit Bars, Vega Bars, Raw Revolution bars, organic apples and bananas (the hotel also has a ton of fresh fruit for me to munch), prenatal vitamins (no I’m not preggers, or my wine consumption would be nonexistent) and chocolate almond milk.

stash

Last night was pretty amazeballs.

We had dinner at one of the nicer places at the resort, but couldn’t get a reservation for the swanktastic place until Saturday night.

So we wore nicer beachy clothes 😀

me

pilot

Yeahhhhh 😀

The restaurant was a seafood and Mediterranean buffet and you could also order off the menu if you wished.

I hit up the buffet when I saw salad, a wide assortment of olives and tapenades, fresh bread, and seafood.

buffet

I wasn’t starving since we had a late snack (mine was salmon with veggies), so I chose a salad, figs with honey and cloves, garlic wheat bread with sundried tomato pesto, ceviche and some mussels. I went back from another piece of bread with sundried tomato pesto- it was awesome.

The pilot rolled with the surf and turf.

Turf

The wine glasses here are MAGICAL- I must see if I can purchase one to take home.. they refill themselves 😉

wine

We got a dessert plate from the buffet to share 🙂

dessert

I had a couple bites of the baklava (one of my favorites), almost all of the Mexican wedding cookie and a bite of the cake. ‘Twas face-rocking 😀

Next, we went to the pub and played pool.

pool

I am the Happy Gilmore of pool 😉

Laid in a cabana…

and danced the night away 🙂

My kinda night.

This morning, since we were night owls, we were moving a little slowly.

I munched an apple and a Vega bar

and sipped some tea while the pilot had pizza for breakfast.

I LOVE what the tea packet had to say on the back 😀

Pretty cute, huh?

Well we’re off to do our daily Insanity workout and then walk down to the beach and pool.

Have a wonderful day <3

Something to talk about: If you’re a vegetarian/vegan/pescatarian/quasitarian have you ever decided to just have a little meat? (TWSS… haha) When I decided to stop eating meat (I still eat fish), I told myself that if I ever wanted to have some, I would just buy organic and go for it. In the almost-two-years since, even though I still cook organic meat for the pilot and watch him eat it all the time, I haven’t had the urge to have any. Even chicken, which used to be one of my favorites. It’s funny how tastes and eating styles change over time. How has your eating style changed over time?? How old were you when/if you decided to stop eating meat or re-vamp your eating style?

Awesomeness! Looks like that resort has pretty yummy food. I wonder if I can convince my man to take half my vita mix… 🙂 worth a shot!

Hahaha you better hope your luggage doesn’t get lost!!! KNOCKING ON WOOD FOR YOU!

I love the pics of you guys. So cute. 🙂 The resort is looking so gorgeous! I want to go.

  4. Kelly on May 13, 2010 at 2:15 pm

LMAO!!! I love that you brought the Vita with you. I bring a ton of stuff when we travel too. Our motorcycle trips are a great challenge but I make it work.

I’ve eaten a vegan diet for 3 years. I don’t crave meat and really have no desire to eat it. Thankfully my husband will cook his own because I can’t even stand to touch it, cook it, or anything. I have gotten him to go to natural meat (thank you Whole Foods) and he loves the flavor. I told him I don’t really care that he eats meat (to each their own) but would prefer it to be natural.

  5. Diane on May 13, 2010 at 2:17 pm

You guys are having so much fun!

I have been a pescatarian for almost a year and rarely crave meat. Last week I REALLY wanted a buffalo chicken salad (so. good.) but I found an alternative by Morningstar that satisfied my craving 🙂 I know having too much soy can be a bad thing, so I won’t buy them often but it’s good to know that I really don’t have to feel deprived or anything.

Also, I think if I was on vacation in another country I’d eat meat- a) because (hopefully) the farming industry wouldn’t be as bad as the US and b) it would be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to try some new food.

WOW longest comment ever! Have fun at the beach! 🙂

  6. Giving up meat (except fish) has been a process. I started last summer with eliminating beef and pork and then I cut out poultry in January. I’m not going to lie and say that there aren’t times when I crave meat, especially since my hubby eats so much of it. There’s also times when I don’t plan well enough (like on long work days) and am stuck either eating a really bland meal or eating meat (99% of the time, I just eat the bland meal).
This past Saturday my family was in town. My sister wanted to stop at Chik-fil-a for a little lunch so I did let myself have a few of her chicken nuggets. Its not something that I will let happen all too often but I won’t beat myself up over having it once in a blue moon.

what a night! that’s so awesome you kept the vitamix with you…definitely a great idea for when we go to hawaii in november!

  8. emily on May 13, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Is your pink dress from NY&CO? I have them in all the colors.. so cute and got them on clearance. My only complaint was I had to make another hole in the belt to make it tighter.

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2010 at 5:32 pm

yes! i got the grey one too 🙂 and you’re right, the sizes and belt run very big

  9. Christy on May 13, 2010 at 2:26 pm

I stopped eating meat 5 years ago and haven’t gone back! I still eat fish occasionally but am slowly cutting that out. I just don’t like the taste of it anymore!

  10. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on May 13, 2010 at 2:29 pm

this is why i love you 🙂 I thought I was weird for bringing snacks to the all inclusive for our honeymoon, but apparently I’m just ‘ista-ish 🙂

  11. JessG on May 13, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I’m new to your blog but I love it! Just curious about the prenatal vitamins…

  12. Angie (Losing It and Loving It) on May 13, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Well it’s been a month and 12 days since I gave up meat except for fish, eggs and dairy. They say it’s called flexitarian but all the different labels confuse me. I have not really had any urge to eat meat at all but I am struggling with finding dinners that I can have while hubby still eats meat. He is the cook, I am not so it has to be simple!

Looks like you’re having a blast, enjoy!

  13. Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday on May 13, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I really can’t believe you brought your VitaMix with you. That’s just a bit obsessive.

    • JessicaR on May 13, 2010 at 6:38 pm

You apparently have never owned a Vitamix! 🙂 I haven’t met a blender yet that can come close.

  14. Therese on May 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm

You guys are TOO cute! Love the pics! 😀

I’ve been a veg for four years, in the first year I still ate fish and sometimes would eat a bit of meat just because my family would forget and only serve, say, lasagna. But I haven’t eaten meat AT ALL (at least not intentionally) in three years and I find that I have absolutely NO desire anymore to eat it. I don’t mind it in the house (for my boyfriend) but I never have the desire to eat it. But I do admit that sometimes I like the smell of bacon. Go figure…

  15. Amber on May 13, 2010 at 2:48 pm

How nice of you to treat your Vitamix to a vacay in the Bahama’s :p I am going camping this weekend *oh the horror* and my Vitamix is coming with me toooo!!! I hope that you two are having a fabulous get-a-way!

I haven’t eaten meat in 3 or 4 years – my background in health, health education, and the fact that colon cancer runs abundant in my family all tells me that I’m better off not eating it. I do however have a bite here and there of steak or other meat when we are on vacation or I just feel like I need to try some of everyone elses meal when we go out to eat 🙂 I limit dairy b/c I have a dairy allergy, but I can’t say no to cheddar cheese on apples. I also can eat my weight in sushi – and do it all over again an hour later. So, I stick with fruits, veggies, and raw fish (cooked fish makes me gag. I know, weird!)

  16. Kalli@fitandfortysomething on May 13, 2010 at 2:49 pm

looks like you are having a great time! oh i eat meat occasionally….i try not to be a pain when i am out or when i am asked to eat at a friends house 🙂

  17. Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) on May 13, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Wow, you must *really* love your VitaMix. I travel a lot and sometimes bring granola bars for afternoon snacks but have never gone quite that far. 😉

  18. Sarah on May 13, 2010 at 3:01 pm

looks like such a fun vacation!!

i was a very picky eater as a kid and never really liked meat since i knew what i was eating. i really can’t ever remember a time i craved meat except maybe 6th grade when i liked chicken nuggets. i haven’t eaten any meat except seafood in 2.5 years. i always ate it so i wouldn’t feel awkward being the one eating something else and finally i just realized i don’t care. i love shrimp like you though so i don’t think i will ever be a true vegetarian but i tell people i am! i eat so much better now and a much wider variety of food now that i am a vegetarian. which seems strange but it is true! once you stop eating meat you have to look for other things to eat!

  19. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on May 13, 2010 at 3:02 pm

You and The Pilot are so cute!!! Looks like he got his hair did recently, no? LOL 😉

Good idea to bring your own snacks on a vacay. I’m always nervous of wasting money having to throw them out when going through customs. But good to know!!!

  20. Jess - The Domestic Vegan on May 13, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Looks like such a fun vacay!

I have been vegan for almost 3 years & never have “just a bite” of anything non-vegan. Veganism is too important to me & I have so many reasons for living this lifestyle. I don’t feel deprived in any way & I am constantly eating amazing vegan food, so I have no reason to “cheat.” It’s not about purity for me or living by a label; it’s about living my values & being the person I want to be, and I have no desire to stray.

  21. Kat on May 13, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I pack SO many snacks with me too when we go on vacation, I can’t help it! You gotta be prepared. I need to find some of those Vega bars, everyone in the blog world is eating them and raves about them..

I decided to go vegetarian last July, so I’m almost coming up on my one year anniversary. I told myself the same thing- if I REALLY wanted it, I’d have some. Our friends invited us over one time for a bbq, and here he was smoking a PIGLET like they do on the islands. I ate a piece of it, i’ll admit it and it was probably the best pork I’ve ever tasted. Annnndddd I was SICK for a week. I felt smoked pig coming out of my pores. It was horrible. That was it for me! Never again!

  22. Amy on May 13, 2010 at 3:05 pm

I know where you are… especially after the wine glasses refilling themselves comment! 🙂

  23. Heather @ Side of Sneakers on May 13, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I’m glad I’m not the only who brings food on vacation! Although I’ve never brought kitchen equipment 😉 A refilling wine glass would be my dream come true—or a really bad idea hahaaa.

I’ve never been much of a meat eater, but recently I went back to not eating any at all, but said if I wanted it I could have it. I think those are the magic words, because I haven’t wanted it all – and it doesn’t even sound good to me!

  24. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on May 13, 2010 at 3:15 pm

You are sooo funny for bringing that vitamix. I wonder what the airport screeners though. You have a whole kitchen with you! Love that dress, by the way.

  25. Danielle (Coffee Run) on May 13, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Uhh no shame in bringing the vitamix! I bring mine everywhere…it’s like my baby (hah that’s sad)

I’m vegan and I’ve never decided to have meat/eggs/dairy <– (intentionally). But, if my mom made a dish that happened to have some ridiculous trace amount of animal…like a T of Worcestershire sauce, I would eat it

  26. Melissa on May 13, 2010 at 3:18 pm

It’s been about 16 years since I have eaten meat. I do cook meat for my husband and children and it does not bother me. The only thing that I do find is that I tend to put them first and I do not always cook myself the most nutritious yummy meal. I am trying to get better at incorporating the two but everyone has different tastes. That would be a great post on your blog! My kids eat very healthy and I try not to feed them junk so that’s not the issue but it’s the varying meals…

Hope you are having a BLAST! Mel

  27. kyla on May 13, 2010 at 3:18 pm

I was 7 when I stopped eating red meat, I ate chicken when I was 8, and I became a vegetarian when I was 9. ( I’m almost 21 now) I had chicken a few times last year but I stopped because I felt sick. I was a vegan for 4 months this year but decided to switch back to vegetarian. I love plain yogurt too much to not eat it!

  28. Kellie on May 13, 2010 at 3:19 pm

I don’t eat meat, and although sometimes it smells good, I know that it would upset my tummy if I ate it, so I have no problem not eating it. I don’t even eat seafood. I just don’t crave it like I thought I would.

  29. allison @ livingoneday on May 13, 2010 at 3:21 pm

i wavered with vegetarianism for years, but ate meat now and then. it’s hard because my family always makes jokes like, “oh, you’re not eating meat this week?” it’s just a personal preference. i dont force people to eat tofu or tempeh, so i dont need to be forced into eating chicken. i used to love chicken and pork loin, but now even the smell of it makes me gag. personal dietary preferences shouldnt be a family affair. it’s my body! even though im not vegan/veg/pesc/etc, i still choose veg/pesc way more than i would ever choose meat. it’s just what i like!

  30. bobbileigh on May 13, 2010 at 3:23 pm

Its been almost 3 months since I stopped eating meat (except fish on occasion) and about 2 months since I gave up milk, yogurt and caffeine. I have craved meat once or twice when cooking it for the Fiance but it was really more of that grilled flavor not the actual meat so I just licked my fingers after plating his meal (wow typing that sounds kinda crazy). Shortly after meat I decided to give up the other 3 and they were much harder than meat but it hasnt been really hard at all.

  31. Jessica on May 13, 2010 at 3:24 pm

What a great idea to pack your favs for a vacation! Why haven’t I thought of this? Is there any issue with packing fruit? I am guessing it is ok if you check it? I am going on my honeymoon in October and need to come up with a list of goodies to bring with 🙂

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2010 at 5:27 pm

i’ve never had a prob with checking fruit in my bag 🙂

    • Ilana on May 13, 2010 at 8:42 pm

fresh produce is often a problem if you travel outside of US borders so just check with your airline!

  32. Whitney @ Whitinspired on May 13, 2010 at 3:24 pm

I have been trying out being a vegetarian this week and I have to say, I don’t really miss the meat. I think I might continue to eat seafood, but unless it’s organic and I know how it was raised, I’m avoiding it at all costs.

  33. Ellie on May 13, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I luurrrve my Vitamix, but would never take it on vacation with me. I don’t trust the airlines with my baby…if it got lost or broken, I’d be traumatized. 😉 I do, however, travel with my protein and other supplements. I have a little tupperware travel kit that is always ready to go.

I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 9 and a vegan for a few years. I never have any desire to eat meat (but I do cook it), but bypassing cheese is a constant struggle for me. The cheez often wins.

    Enjoy your vacay!

  34. JR on May 13, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Thanks so much for bringing us along! Even though I’m lucky enough to be going to the Bahamas next week, I am LOVING the diversion at work and (hopefully) learning from your healthy approach to vacation!

  35. Stephanie on May 13, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I stopped eating meat when I was 12….never really liked it before that anyway. One day when I was 15, everyone was eating in-n-out and I was starving. I decided to try it. I took about 3 bites and decided that I did not like it. Spent the rest of the night feeling sick to my stomach and vomiting. Seriously think the body changes and may not be able to adapt, maybe enzyme changes or something???

  36. Lindsay (Summit Sandwiches) on May 13, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I as a big lover of fish, so I don’t intend on ever giving that up, but I rarely buy chicken or other meat for myself nowadays. This evolution in my eating came about when I started cooking for myself after graduating college (it started off as a way to save money…beans are cheaper than meat!). But then, I started reading more and more about the benefits of adding more plants to my diet. So I’ve dialed back on the meat consumption considerably…I agree with Michael Pollan’s notion that Americans eat too much meat. Meat now tastes SUPER rich to me, so I’d rather save it for special occasions (and have it feel special too).

Also, that’s awesome that you brought the Vita-Mix on your trip. LOL. Love it!

  37. Annie on May 13, 2010 at 4:17 pm

Made me smile to see you brought it along. Haha 😀

  38. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on May 13, 2010 at 4:22 pm

I haven’t stopped eating meat, but I eat less of it just cause I don’t have the desire for it as much. I can’t believe you brought your vitamix to the BAHAMAS! haha you crazy girls.

  39. Paige (Running Around Normal) on May 13, 2010 at 4:36 pm

omg the funny faces get me every time LOL. You two would be a blast to hang out with I bet. Have fun at the beach!!
I’m pretty confident I’ll never eat meat again. But I just may eat shellfish again sometime…I have my reasons for that, but we shall see.

  40. MaryZ on May 13, 2010 at 4:36 pm

I don’t call myself a vegetarian because if I choose to have meat I do! But in the past 6 months of eating vegetarian (I still cook meat for the fam) I have never really wanted it or craved it. Maybe once every couple weeks I’ll have a burger or some chicken. It’s not nearly as good as it use to be :/ But I am eating exactly what I crave and love…veggies, fruit, a little dairy, eggs, nuts and a little grains.

  41. Kim on May 13, 2010 at 4:53 pm

That resort looks so fun and relaxing!

I would totally take my vita-mix on vacay with me too!

I only went veg (actually pescatarian) a couple of months ago and so far so good, the bf went back to meat right away so like you I still cook it on ocasion, but I don’t have the desire to even taste it.

  42. Mama Pea on May 13, 2010 at 4:57 pm

You are hilarious with your vita. I get mine tomorrow…GAHHHHH!!!

I totally have lost my taste for all meat. I think Pea Daddy has too. I caught him picking tiny slivers of ham off of a WF pizza the other day and cursing under his breath. 🙂

Looks like you are having a blast! Enjoy that sun!

I bring my blender with me on vacation, along with snacks, protein powder, bars, and almond milk.

I haven’t eaten meat/poultry in two months and I don’t feel the need yet to try any. I figure if I’m out and there isn’t another alternative (like say a family dinner and they are serving lasagna) then I would have a small bit, but so far every dinner party I’ve gone too has served seafood of some sort 🙂

  45. Kim on May 13, 2010 at 5:48 pm

I have only recently given up meat full time – about 2 months – still eat some fish and cheese. Working on giving up the cheese though! I love what you brought with you food wise – vacations are always hard for me to eat the way I’m used to! My next trip I am loading up! OK, maybe not the blender, but some of the other stuff!

    Have a great time!

  46. Kim on May 13, 2010 at 5:52 pm

I stopped eating all meat except for chicken and fish almost 20 years ago. I watched Food Inc. about a month ago and have now given up chicken and only use organic free range eggs. To answer your question, no I never get the urge to have a little bite of meat. I can’t even eat things that have touched meat. It drives my husband crazy that I won’t even eat pizza that has the pepperoni picked off. But once my mother in law made spaghetti and I could have sworn there was meat in the sauce so I picked around it but I didn’t have the nerve to say anything. Later that night I went to put something in the recycling and saw the glass jar of spaghetti sauce with sausage!!! It took all my composure not to lose it!! I’m much more careful around her now!!

  47. Ilana on May 13, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Oh man I am not surprised at all you brought the vita with you! We always bring stuff – my boyfriend is fond of having his rice cooker and his hot plate. Me, my magic bullet.

The very last bite of meat I took was a taste of my friend’s chicken at a place rumored to have AMAZING chicken when we were in Thailand last summer. Yeah, it was awesome, but for my health purposes, I rarely ate meat then anyway (maybe once a month, if positively inevitable, or if I *really* wanted it), and had been very conscious about eating vegetarian all throughout the trip, but it was one of those things that I had to do since I would never have the opportunity again. I have no problem cooking meat for my boy or for the fam but I no longer want it at all. It’s actually something I’m struggling with – my boyfriend comes from a very close-knit family and their cultural history/cuisine is very important to them, and eating meat is a big part of it, so I really don’t know how it’s going to work out as far as marriage and things like that, because I really never want to eat meat again but I also really don’t want to offend my potential future in-laws who already are wary of me because I don’t come from the same culture as they. Le sigh.

  48. melissa cari on May 13, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I stopped eating meat a little over 2 years ago, but still ate fish. I said the same thing to myself – that if I ever wanted it, I’d have it. In general, I’m not so black and white about things, so about 6 months ago, I started eating red meat again (I don’t have any desire for chicken or turkey). I never order it, but have a bite of other peoples dishes once in awhile. I do enjoy red meat and don’t feel the need to 100% eliminate it from my life.

  49. Sarah Anne on May 13, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I was NEVER a big meat eater. My family LOVED burgers and steak, and chicken..but I always picked at it. When I started dating a strict vegetatarian in Uni, I just…stopped eating meat(and fish). It was just way easier to eat together and to cook together. So that was at…20ish? I stayed vegetarian for about 4 years, until a rather unsupportive significant other taunted and pushed – and I caved! Though vegetarian for those years, I wouldn’t have said my eating habits were ‘healthy’. I ate a lot of carbs, and a lot of ‘faux’ meat.

I have since, always eaten a lot of tofu out of choice, if we had thai and they gave the option, but just went pescatarian in November 2009. British Columbia has some of THE BEST Salmon I’ve ever had (and wild caught) and some of the most wonderous sushi. I treasure it too much to give up! Plus, I love how my skin and hair feel when I’m eating salmon!

Surprisingly enough, my meat-heavy boyfriend, saw Food Inc, and decided to come along on the journey! All by himself! I was SOOOOO proud of him! We both decided, if we WANTED to eat meat, special occasion, organic, free range..whatever – that we would. There have been a couple times that food has come out with some bacon in it, or chicken stock or something and we’ve not balked at it but ate it. I figure, if the food is already made, then by sending it back and having them fix it, I’m just wasting food that A)Could have fed someone else and b)Is now TRASH! So in those instances, my environmental heart wins me over. My bf has eaten some beef and some bacon by mistake but I’ve yet to make myself some meat or order it out. I just don’t really have the urge.

Even when I’m having ‘that time of the month’ and I just want a slab of red meat, I think “Sarah, do you REALLY want it?” and usually the answer is no. 🙂

I feel better physically, and mentally/emotionally because I know that my choices make a difference in my health, the earth’s health and to all the animals. 🙂

    • Sarah Anne on May 13, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Oh, and I actually feel better eating more beans and limiting my fish/tofu consumption. My boyfriend would eat tofu and fish every day, but I just find it runs my body down. I prefer to find new ways to serve up a variety of beans and ancient grains!

  50. Kailey (SnackFace) on May 13, 2010 at 6:41 pm

GAH YOU TWO ARE TOO CUTE!!! It’s admirable you’re blogging during your honeymoon!

I’ve only recently had the interesting pleasure of eating with a male. I adore gigantic appetites, so it makes me oddly happy.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have grown up eating tons of fruits and veggies, whole grains and little meat. It was always an effort to get me to eat meat, even when I was a wee one. I’ve been full-on vegetarian for, gosh, years. HOWEVER, I did have a meaty slip-up three or four weeks ago. For the life of me, I could not get this turkey sandwich craving out of my bod, so I just bought one, ate it, enjoyed it and moved on! Ain’t no thang.

I’ve also done the vegan thing, and while I loved it, it was hard for me to tell myself I couldn’t have something. I think anyone with a disordered past faces the issue of finally allowing oneself to have whatever you want. Denying myself Greek yogurt reminded me of a very dark period in my life, and I didn’t want to feel like that in the slightest. ANYWAY, basically, I am all about eat what you want, when you want. And if that’s a turkey sandwich once in a few years, why not?
