Street Party

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Hope your weekend is off to a great start <3

Thank you so much to those of you who entered the macaroon and Sephora giveaway. I loved reading about how you’ve adapted your workouts with the cooler weather.

The winner of the Friday giveaway is:

Hope!

Congrats, girl. Send me your address to fitnessista at gmail dot com – I’ll order your gift card today and get the macaroons in the dehydrator tomorrow.

So, last night we had a little street party.

hot dogs

I mentioned before that our neighbors seem pretty awesome –one brought me a coconut water on the day we moved in. I call that destiny- and apparently, they like to all get together every now and again. Last night, we hung out in one of the neighbor’s front yards in yard chairs, and there were food tables set up with music playing, kids running around, and a Sonoran hot dog stand.

It was pretty fantastic- I curled up in a chair with a blanket, bowl of chips and jalapenos, and chatted with the neighbors for a few hours. We’re lucky to be surrounded by such a fun group of families.. everyone was just as kind and friendly as I had imagined them to be.

c2b936bf75e949c8aedac45fa57aa712_7

It also reaffirmed the fact that Bella LOVES kids. Two little girls –who will probably be our little baby’s friends- couldn’t stop hugging her, kissing her, and feeding her bites of hot dog. Her tail was shaking the whole time- she loved it.

Our contributions to the party:

desserts

Two things of sea salt brownie bites and carrot cake cookies from Trader Joe’s

and a cooler full of beer.

beer

This morning, I made two scrambled eggs with toast for bfast:

eggs

and am about to get ready to teach.

Hope you have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya on my lunch break!
xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: Do you have neighborhood parties? This is something I definitely haven’t seen in a loooong time. In Valdosta, the property manager would try to plan get-togethers, but no one would go. The last time I went to a *real* nighborhood party was probably when I was in middle school. My mom’s neighborhood used to have an annual block party.

Something to do: I usually don’t like to ask you guys to vote for awards and such, but I’ve been nominated for one that means a lot to me: Shape Magazine’s Best Fitness Blogger. Thank you to those who nominated me -I was so excited and honored when I found out <3 If you’d like to vote, *here’s the link*

How fun!! I wish neighbors around here did stuff like that!

How were the carrot cake cookies? They look wonderful and I love carrot cake. I think they’d be fun to try and re-create at home!

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2011 at 10:02 pm

i didn’t try them since i was too focused on the brownie bites 😉

  5. Beth (Well I'll Be) on October 8, 2011 at 11:28 am

No neighborhood parties… yet. We just moved to our new home about 4 weeks ago and we’ve only met one neighbor. I’m a little sad, but I know with all the forecloseures and short sales people just probably aren’t making much of an effort now. I’m sure it will come….

  8. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on October 8, 2011 at 11:47 am

We have a lot of young families on our block o it’s so un to get together with everyone! I love that sense of community!

This is what I most look forward to about buying a house one day. Its hard to get to know neighbors in an apartment since we really don’t have a reason to be outside doing yardwork and getting to know others that way.

P.S. Congrats on the nomination! You have my vote.

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2011 at 9:57 pm

exactly- we never knew our neighbors when we lived in apartments
      thank you!

  23. Ali on October 8, 2011 at 2:40 pm

It looks like you guys had a great time! I am so happy to hear that Bella likes kids, must be a load off of your minds! We used to have block parties all the time! I think it was mostly an excuse for all the parents on the street to eat allot and get relatively intoxicated, without having to actually go out or get a baby sitter. I suppose I always had a good time chatting with everyone though!

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2011 at 9:57 pm

      hahah that’s a great point.

  24. Jessica @ Jess Go Bananas on October 8, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Usually summertime is prime time to get to laugh and hang with the neighbors! I love chatting in lawn chairs and just shootin’ the shit! lol

So many congratulations for your nomination, yours is definitely a blog that I completely love and check all the time – so thank you for all the effort and inspiration and effort you pour into your site. 🙂
So cool that you got to hang out with your neighbours – community is a very special thing, and it must feel wonderful to have it there, where you are! <3 xyx

That party sounds like so much fun! Growing up we would have neighborhood parties for all of the major seasons, like pumpkin carving parties and christmas parties! They were a lot of fun!

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2011 at 9:55 pm

      that’s amazing!

  27. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on October 8, 2011 at 3:20 pm

That is fantastic that your neighborhood is so tight knit and close and that it was such a fun experience. In one house/neighborhood we lived in in San Diego, we had about 8 houses on the block that got together like that…it wasn’t always planned. Often times the guys would be outside doing yard work, the women would go out and start chatting, we’d go in and see what food we had laying around (or wine bottles we could bring outside), we’d set up lawn chairs, kids would be running around, and we’d all just chit chat and laugh…impromptu style and it was soooo fun. I miss that feeling and community vibe.

We live very urban now so that suburban neighborhood vibe is one thing we don’t have as much of. Other huge pros/benefits, though which I wouldn’t trade.

    So happy for you guys!!!

  28. Emily on October 8, 2011 at 3:30 pm

  29. whitney on October 8, 2011 at 3:42 pm

WOW you live in a great neighborhood. I live in socal and I have NEVER heard of a neighborhood party. That looks like so much fun, and it seems like a great way to get to know your neighbors. I have no idea what kind of life my neighbors lead, 🙁 we’re all pretty disconnected.

  30. Alison @ Hospitality Haven on October 8, 2011 at 3:56 pm

There’s always a fall neigbourhood corn roast in our ‘hood where we eat corn, people bake apple pies for an apple pie contest, kids make zucchini cars to race, and we have a live neighbourhood band playing. It’s pretty fantastic!!

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2011 at 9:53 pm

      that sounds AMAZING

  31. RachelG on October 8, 2011 at 4:18 pm

We have a block party once a year. It’s a great way to meet the neighbors and enjoy some good food.

  37. Umm… those inside out carrot cake cookies from TJ’s are like kryptonite. I would be your best friend for life if you showed up with those. Just saying. 🙂

  38. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats on October 8, 2011 at 6:26 pm

The neighborhood party sounds like fun! 🙂 At my mom’s house, the neighbors usually have a “block party” for the 4th of July but that is about the only time that everyone gets together. My dad always has parties at his house for the Husker football games and many of the neighbors pop in and out. It is pretty cool!

  39. Jennifer on October 8, 2011 at 7:19 pm

We have an annual block party. Always had them on the street where I grew up too.

Gina, if you could only have one gluten free bread (primarily for toast with butter/jelly or pb&j) which brand would you choose?

I have a child in my life with a newly diagnosed allergy and need to find something that won’t seem like such a shock for them.

    Thanks 🙂

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2011 at 9:52 pm

what type of bread does the child usually prefer? if he/she likes regular wheaty sandwich bread, go for udi’s. if he/she likes more dense, sweet bread, try the food for life millet bread

  40. Katelyn@ Foodie Goes to School on October 8, 2011 at 8:12 pm
