The Bird House

When we were feeling domestic the other day, the Pilot picked up a hummingbird feeder, since we had quite a few different bird feeders in Valdosta.

It’s been really successful.

I came downstairs the other morning, and a HUGE turtle dove was eating out of the hummingbird feeder. I hope that’s ok? All of the neighborhood birds have spread the word that we have food over here and have been hanging out. Birds kind of freak me out –I have a really weird dinosaur phobia and they’re related- but I’m happy to feed them,

Bella loves chasing them,

bell

and the Pilot just likes birds, I guess 😉

wildadventures006 bird man

(BIRDMAN! Haha. And I can’t wait for his mustache to be gone in T-2 days. I asked to shave it for him and it was vetoed)

The Pilot has flown nights all week, so things have been a little backwards over here – I’m really looking forward to the weekend. Since he’s been gone for dinners, I haven’t been cooking much.

Amy has, though 😉

mac n cheese

I LOVE this Amy’s Mac N’ Cheeze:

amys mac

it’s not healthy (over 700mg of sodium, high in calories and fat, low in protein) but it’s a great little treat atop spinach with some hot sauce.

I set off the smoke alarm making a chicken burger for last night’s dinner salad

(with beets, avocado and balsamic)

and was really excited to try this new-to-me almond milk yogurt with breakfast.

almond milk yogurt

Maybe I got a bad one, but it was pretty foul. Too sweet and also kinda sour.

This morning, we’re taking it easy, and then going for a walk to get some fresh air after we’ve recovered from last night’s adventures 🙂

Have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya later!
xoxo

Something to talk about: Do you have any phobias? It’s funny because snakes and insects don’t bother me too much but I am so creeped out by dinosaurs –I think it’s the thought that they actually existed gets to me- but I cried on the Epcot dinosaur ride. I had mascara running down my face when I got off. That ish is scary, and I’ll never go on the Jurassic Park ride.

Oh man, I hate birds, too – except for hummingbirds! My dad really loves hummingbirds, haha, and they’re always at my parents’ hummingbird feeder. It’s so neat to hear them “buzz” by when I visit them and we eat on the porch!

Did the smoke alarm scare Liv?

  2. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on March 29, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Oh that Amy, she comes to the rescue every time! 😉 As for phobias, does coming home to an empty fridge count? LOL. As a kid, my #1 fear was burglars, especially after seeing the greasy bad guy on Dennis the Menace. Not sure that counts as a phobia, but to this day the dude still creeps me out!

  3. Caroline @ After Dinner Dance on March 29, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Mac ‘N Cheese is the best! Yum. I’ve never heard of almond milk yogurt. I wonder if that’s how it tastes or not.. Maybe I’ll try it too. I have a huge phobia of roaches and birds. I got “attacked” by a bluejay when I was a kid and ever since birds freak me out – people think I’m nuts!

  4. Lindsay on March 29, 2012 at 1:38 pm

I have to say I don’t think you got a bad one those almond milk yogurts are pretty foul. We have tried a few flavors and none have been good. I haven’t seen it in stores here yet but I hear that So Delicious is making an almond milk greek yogurt which I am excited to try and hope is better than amande

    • Jen on March 29, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Sad too bad, I just started drinking almond milk and love it, I was wondering if they made a yogurt.

  5. Lauren J @ The Barn on March 29, 2012 at 1:39 pm

I’m terrified of spiders, but my biggest fear is sharks. I saw Jaws when I was 5 and have been scarred ever since. My husband tries to drag me out in the ocean when we visit the beach and I ball up as tight as I can in his arms…to protect my extremities you know 🙂

  6. AKVA on March 29, 2012 at 1:39 pm

It’s definitely not just yours – I tried the coconut Amande and it made me gag – thankfully I only bought one to try or it would have been a bigger waste of money!

  7. Krista @ A Belle in DC on March 29, 2012 at 1:40 pm

I have 2 big fears and both of them are pretty random- frogs (someone used to throw them at me or put them on my head or shoulders when I wasn’t looking) and overly large animals in the ocean. Whales are obviously the biggest offender but I really can’t handle the idea of anything with a tongue that weighs nearly 3 tons. literally. It’s like a dinosaur…who just didn’t get the memo. blech!

  8. AJ on March 29, 2012 at 1:40 pm

I like to explain to people that I have an “irrational fear of dinosaurs”. I understand they don’t exist anymore, but Jurassic Park scarred me as a child and I’ll never get over it. Too many dreams about being chased by T-Rex *shudder*. This fear also extends to birds. They just look too much like dinosaurs. I can’t handle it.

And word to the wise, you are correct in not wanting to go on a Jurassic Park ride. I was talked into it. I’ve regretted it ever since.

  9. Lindsey D. on March 29, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Fish absolutely terrify me. 🙁 At least dinos aren’t still around to freak you out – well, at least the live ones. 🙂

  10. Lissy on March 29, 2012 at 1:40 pm

really, Universe of Energy freaked you out? Don’t go on Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom either.

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm

No it was the animal kingdom one!!!!! Omg.

  11. Averie @ Averie Cooks on March 29, 2012 at 1:40 pm

My grandma used to have a hummingbird feeder…reading about yours just brought back some fond memories.

Amy and her cooking, gotta do what you gotta do…and she does make some good ones 🙂

  12. Becca on March 29, 2012 at 1:41 pm

I am overly scared of snakes!!!! I hate walking in grass as I always think one will pop out. Haha I like to wear my Hunter rain boots in my yard 🙂 I don’t even go in the reptile hut at the zoo!

  13. Ginger on March 29, 2012 at 1:46 pm

snakes and most bugs don’t bother me. roaches and rats give me the heebie jeebies BAD though. roaches especially (shuddering)

I took a whole class on dinosaurs in college and thought it was fascinating. ha ha

  14. Lisa @ Fresh Spinach on March 29, 2012 at 1:46 pm

I’m not a bird person either, but like you, my husband seems to love them. We also have cats who REALLY enjoy birds coming by the house.
Also, that mac ‘n cheese is the best! Great idea throwing it on top a bed of spinach!

  15. Lissy on March 29, 2012 at 1:46 pm

oh and I’m terrified of spiders. And I’m not keen on fire.

  16. Stepheny @ GUSD on March 29, 2012 at 1:47 pm

I get anxiety just thinking about this…. my phobias are bats (the animal) and house fires. (shudder and cringe)

  17. Amanda on March 29, 2012 at 1:48 pm

I am also not a fan of birds. I’m actually terrified – they freak me out. I have to try to get over this because there has been too many incidents where I look like a fool because of a bird. For example, I was walking to an interview in my heels and pencil skirt when I saw a bird nose dive toward me.. I bolted to the left and tripped a little bit. Um, this is fun when people see me do this all of the time! 😉

  18. Kristen on March 29, 2012 at 1:54 pm

My biggest animal phobia is cows. I get made fun all the time for this. My friends and family don’t get it. They only see cows moving slow and grazing on grass. Let me just tell you, some cows have some cranky ass attitudes! I have had multiple encounters with crazy cows. Once there was a calf involved, which is understandable. The other times were just random mad cows.
When I was in high school, I pulled into my driveway only to find 2 bulls fighting in my back yard (way in the back away from my house). I went nuts and drove across the lawn right up to the front door barely stopping before hitting the house, put the car in park, left it running and hauled butt into the house. My parents thought there was a serious emergency- which there was. I mean c’mon, those bulls were clearly out to get me. Lol

Hey! So ironically you posted a gluten-free product and I was gonna ask you for any gluten-free recommendations- breads, cereals, pastas, etc. I have been experiencing a lot of digestive issues recently and am thinking that I should try a gluten-free diet… Thanks!

  20. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on March 29, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Weirdest phobia: ET. Equally traumatic experience on the ET ride.

  21. Sana on March 29, 2012 at 1:57 pm

I love almond milk! But that yogurt sounds nasty.

  22. Becky on March 29, 2012 at 2:00 pm

i have a thing with knees. yes, knees. the things on your legs. i think they look gross and the thought of someone touching them is like fingernails down a chalkboard to me. i have an image in my head of the knee cap just sitting there unprotected and someone could move or damage it at anytime. i know, i have issues. don’t judge me. 🙂

    • Katie on March 29, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Hysterical! I have a thing with necks. I hate when people touch the front of my neck or anywhere close to my collarbone. Or in movies, any sort of death that involves the neck is like nails on a chalk board for me! Wow, just realized it’s probably due to another fear of suffocating. Drowning. Being locked up in a small space with no air to breathe. I need help… 😛

  23. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on March 29, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I am terrified of rodents.. they give me the creeps! That is so disappointing about the yogurt! I heard someone else say something similar when then tried it 🙁

  24. Ashley on March 29, 2012 at 2:11 pm

I have to tell you, I love dinosaurs, loved the Jurassic Park ride at Universal, blah blah blah….that dinosaur ride at Epcot scared the poop out of me. I think I feared for my life. I heard little kids screaming and I kept thinking, “What kind of ride is this?!”.

  25. Jenn @ RunItMyWay on March 29, 2012 at 2:15 pm

Awww Bella is so sweet!! She looks a lot like my pup Daisy-Pants 🙂 The dog I had before Daisy was named Bella – she was the sweetest little pug!

I have a bazillion ridiculous fears… toilet snakes, basements, regular snakes, weird sounds that houses make at night, ill-tempered snakes, the dark… I could go on and on! 😉

  26. Joanna on March 29, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Weird, I’ve had a number of those almond yogurts and liked them! The texture of the coconut one you have in the picture threw me off at first, but it’s just b/c it has shredded coconut in it.

I guess everyone’s tastebuds are different! Example: you couldn’t pay me to consume goat milk/cheese/yogurt BARF! So nasty! *sorry! Lol*

Oh, and I don’t have a fear of birds, just a general dislike. I think feathers are gross and diseased. Pretty sure my mom put that in my head when I was little and it stuck!

  27. Steffany on March 29, 2012 at 2:40 pm

That mac & cheese looks delicious, haha. I also love hot sauce on mac & cheese, and pretty much just about everything else. Eggs, rice, meats, veggies, etc. That yogurt looked good, I am sad it was the opposite, lol. I am always trying new ones and half of the time they are total fails LOL. As for phobias, I have an extreme fear of being sick/puking, like emetophobia. :-X

  28. Carrie on March 29, 2012 at 2:41 pm

I didn’t care for the dairy-free, soy-free Amy’s mac ‘n cheeze. I thought it was mushy and bland and not worth the calories at all. I much prefer Oh She Glows butternut squash ‘n cheeze. I may prefer it too much, actually!

Don’t come over to my house: We have the world’s sweetest mutt, but when she pins her ears back, we joke that she looks like a little velociraptor. We even sing songs to her about her raptor ways.

My biggest phobia is heights. I can’t even look at pictures of people way up high without getting ill.

  29. ab on March 29, 2012 at 2:41 pm

i thought the amande was not my favorite yogurt ever. i liked the coconut better than the peach because it had real bits of coconut in it. but…. yeah, just not delish.

  30. Brittany on March 29, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Birds freak me out. When my mom was two her parents were watching the movie the birds and they didn’t think that she was paying attention. She remembers her nightmare to this day that she had that night.
My fears are birds and fish (not in a fish tank. The ones in the ocean).

    • Brittany on March 29, 2012 at 9:39 pm

So I guess Liv wont be watching ‘a land before time’ when she is older? To this day it is hands down in my top three favorites as a kid. I remember watching it when I went to Indiana to visit my uncle and my brother and I were jet lagged ( only an hour but when you are 6, it might as well be 5 hours) so we watched that in my uncle and aunts room and napped together. Good times!

That salad looks so simple and good. I always have those ingredients too, so I will have to remember it for lunches next week. I’ve never tried any of Amy’s stuff but it looks like a good option for those nights when there’s no time to cook. Where did you get the almond milk yogurt? I didn’t know they made it but would love that option, too since I can’t have dairy!

  32. Meagan on March 29, 2012 at 2:49 pm

RATS. I actually have rat-related nightmares about once a week, it’s terrifying. I’ve luckily only seen one in the city (I live in downtown Philly, I’m sure there are lots). Ugh.

  33. Margaret on March 29, 2012 at 2:51 pm

My dad can’t stand that yogurt. I don’t remember his exact comments but I know he was really disappointed by how bad it was. He tried that exact same flavor and the cherry which he also vetoed.. I haven’t tried it but since I dislike pretty much all yogurt with any flavoring my opinion isn’t helpful.

  34. Alanna on March 29, 2012 at 2:54 pm

It’s not you- Amande is disgusting, and I was really excited for it, too!

  35. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on March 29, 2012 at 3:01 pm

I do not like bats, they scare me because they can fly and potential have rabies and dive bomb you and claw out your hair. I have had one fly in to my house twice now (two different houses), once when I was alone with my puppies while my parents were on vacation and it was a nightmare. I baricaded myself in my room with my puppies and it crawled under my door (in daylight), looked at me, and then started flying around. I was army crawling down the stairs bawling my eyes out. A pest control inspector ended up coming to my house off duty and catching it for me for free I sounded like such a wreck on the phone.

    • Lindsay on March 29, 2012 at 6:19 pm

I just gasped out loud when I read the part about it crawling under your door!! That’s terrifying!

Bees/wasps/hornets. I have a love hate relationship with bees, or really anything that goes buzzzzz. hummingbirds are okay. I like honeybees but the big black yellow bees that could be killer bees….eep. Granted, I’m the one that has to deal with them too :\ Luckily, Eric is the spider man so he takes care of those freaky deaky things.

  38. Sarah on March 29, 2012 at 3:40 pm

I hate snakes. OMG, when i see one, I make such an odd, foreign noise and grab whomever is closest to me. It is such a silly reaction, but I can’t help it. Even if they are dead, it’s like I can feel them slithing up my pant leg. Yuck!

  39. Aviva on March 29, 2012 at 4:05 pm

You would hate my job…I work at a natural history museum. Fossils and dinos galore! And bugs, snakes, birds, you name it. At least at natural history museums, all the critters are dead (save for a few live animals in exhibits or used for education).

  40. Victoria @ The Pursuit of Hippieness on March 29, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Not gonna lie, I don’t mind Amande- the cherry is really good. But it is really reaaalllyyy sweet, almost like those Yoplait “yogurts”, so I like to mix it with plain coconut milk yogurt to counteract that a little bit.

  41. Beth on March 29, 2012 at 4:18 pm

I am terrified of birds– especially the ones people have in cages, like parrots. I could never have a bird like that on my arm! Those beady little bird eyes creep me out!

I am also terrified of saunas. Won’t go in one. I think I am afraid of getting locked in. Wierd, I know!

  42. Katie on March 29, 2012 at 4:24 pm

I used to have an intense fear of frogs, but thankfully it’s subsided a bit. Our old place was right up to the woods and we’d see so much wildlife it wasn’t even funny. (I used to love listening to the coyotes at night). But there were so many damn frogs on the driveway, whenever we’d come home at night, I’d either have to shut the garage immediately after my car got inside (so they didn’t try and come in), or I’d have my boyfriend give me piggy back rides through the front door.

  43. Sylvia on March 29, 2012 at 4:32 pm

I have to say that I’m glad that you posted that you love Mac&Cheese! I always pictured you eating super healthy, it’s nice knowing that you have a weakness for things that are not super healthy. I love Mac&Cheese as well, but try not to eat it too often :-). Too much cheese gives me migraines for some reason.

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2012 at 8:00 pm

girl, i would sleep in a bed of mac n cheese if i could.
that version is made with daiya cheese, so it’s a little easier to digest than the original versions

  44. Laura on March 29, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Okay first I need to apologize to everyone because I cannot stop laughing at the crazy phobias…and I feel as though I can say this because mine is JUST as crazy! Before I tell you mine, I have to say that my favorite phobias here are cows, knees and necks hee hee hee! Now I’ll tell you mine so you can make fun of me…it’s HUMAN HAIR. I’m fine with hair that’s attached to someone’s head but once it’s off the head, all bets are OFF. Animal hair doesn’t bother me on or off whatsoever UNLESS it happens to find it’s way into my food 😉 All of my friends know this about me and have at one time or another witnessed one of my hair freakouts. I’m gagging just thinking about it…ha…I’m crazy..I know 🙂

P.S. the mac and cheese looks AMAZING!

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2012 at 7:58 pm

it is sugar water! all the birds think it’s delicious apaprently

  46. Negar M on March 29, 2012 at 5:41 pm

OMG, please protect baby Olivia when you’re outside and hummingbirds are around! No joke: my first year in Tucson, I worked in a building with a nice patio and a hummingbird kept flying right up to my face and fluttering around. This happened day after day and I swear if I didn’t freak out and run away it would have pecked at my nose.

I thought it was just the one bird, but another one kept doing it on the patio at my apartment. It also happened at someone’s retirement picnic at Randall Park, and when I moved, I got smacked in the forehead by not one but two pigeons….

Birds are brutal. Protect yourself. Don’t be a hero.

  48. Lindsay on March 29, 2012 at 6:25 pm

I am terrified of large talking birds, like parrots. We were in Key West and went on this Orchid Tour – I thought it was just going to be pretty flowers. Ummm no, there were tons of giant parrots, not in cages. I was beyond terrified. I’m also crazy scared of wasps – probably because there was a small crack above my bedroom window last year where the window had slid down from the top part and they kept coming into my apartment. Except it took months to figure it out and I was so terrified I slept on my couch for half of the summer. Thinking about it makes me want to cry!!

  49. Kelsey on March 29, 2012 at 6:26 pm
