The Lunch Bunch

Alternate titles to this post: “Metal Mouth” and “Tofu Trauma”… more on that to follow 😉

Thanks so much for the dress compliments– I’m going to order it today. Now I’m on a mission for SHOES!

So after the last time I saw ya’ll, I made a little snacky before I started on the raw lunches for my clients.

Millet bread with 2 egg whites and Tabasco. Never fails 🙂

Then I got to work!

I made salads with raw herb croutons (recipe to come), organic greens, dulse, hemp seeds, avocado and lime juice (modeled after the famous S&M salad)

I really hope they enjoyed it 😀

I dropped the lunches off and then came home to clean up and make my own lunch.

Clue that I should have eaten the same thing as my clients: I accidentally ate metal.

Not a lot of metal, but a couple of specks and enough to freak me out.

Looks good, right?

I spiralized zucchini, topped with bell pepper and tomato and roasted some brussel sprouts and tofu to go with. I started eating tofu again recently and as I was munching away, I noticed grey specks on one of the tofu bites. The tofu had gotten extra crunchy and stuck to the cookie sheet… so I scraped it off, put it in the mix and didn’t think twice about it. Apparently bits of the cookie sheet came off onto the tofu. Lovely right?? I threw the other half of the tofu block away… might be awhile before I crave it again after today’s event.

Well I’m off to get ready for yoga and then train a client. We’re having shrimpies for dinner 🙂

    your clients’ lunches look yummy, and yours LOOKS yummy, but . . . apparently not!! I enjoy tofu when other people make it but haven’t found a way to make it at home that I can stomach yet! blech.

    think of it this way: you definitely got your day’s worth of minerals, right??

    I’ve done that before with my husband’s pots and pans. They were cheapy versions that he destroyed and and bottoms flaked off. So gross! And really disappointing when you gotta throw a meal away.

    That’s really traumatic. once my sister had steel wool in her pancakes at a diner and it was MONTHS before any of us could eat pancakes.

    Oops I’ve done that before and eaten tin foil by mistake!! The food looks fabulous for your clients, think I’ll try making the soup, don’t think I’ve ever had cold soup before but I’ll give it a go.

    Just curious Gina and it’s probably a question for another day, but what do you think of plastics? Like plastic bottles, plastic containers etc? I’ve read a bit about bpa, I think that’s what it’s called. Just curious, don’t worry if you can’t answer it now. Have a great day.

      hey susan,
      in a nutshell, i think plastics are bad but there are much worse things you could be doing to your body. i always drink water out of an aluminum bottle but don’t use glass storage containers because they cost a TON. i looked at one the other day and it was $25 for two… i’d rather spend my dollas on other things. i think if the food isn’t in plastic for very long and as long as youre not microwaving food in plastic, it’s fine.

        Great thanks Gina, that’s what I was thinking about plastic, it’s not good to put plastic containers in the microwave. I too use plastic containers to bring my lunches to work etc.

    How scary! I remember reading that cooking in cast iron pans actually added iron to what you’re cooking – but I’m not entirely sure that’s true. Either way, it beats cookie sheet chunks!

    The raw lunch looks spectacular (esp the pumpkin stuff).

    Oh, did you put any sauce on your spirialized zuch and veggies? I’m new to the spirilizing world and welcome any recommendations 😉 So far I’ve done reg maranara sauce and pesto. Both delish 🙂 🙂

    I was shocked when someone told me that in cereals like Total, you can actually see the specks of iron. Sure enough, if you look at the cereal, there are little chunks of metal in there! I guess I never associated the metal iron with iron in my vitamins and my spinach haha!

    Ugh – I understand how that would gross you out. For myself, I cook my tofu in a frying pan on the stove with no extra oil (or maybe just a quick spritz of olive oil spray) but that way you would eliminate the possibility of aluminum foil in your mouth. As far as I know, the taste is pretty consistent.

    Hey Gina,

    Sorry about your lunch! I suggest putting baking paper on the tray between the tofu and tray – no metal contamination then!

    I have a question about the Intro to Iron workout. I did the back and biceps routine today (loved it) but I couldn’t figure out how to do the oblique v-up. No matter how hard I tried I could seem to get my legs off the ground. Any tips?

    I’m sure that small amount of metal won’t be too harmful. I’d line the baking sheet next time, though. Those raw lunches look delicious! With salads like that I don’t even think you would miss cooked food!

      i’d say keep the cardio to 20 minutes (for health reasons) and up your protein, cals and healthy fats a little.

      i don’t have a yoga cert, just a group fitness cert. which is why teaching yoga is probably more challenging for me :/

    One of the reasons I love your blog is because I can tell that you *truly* have a passion for training and care personally for your clients. I wish all trainers were like that! The effort you put into those lunches is very admirable, and they look absolutely delicious =)

    A very similar event (I think I was baking fish) is what taught me to use tin foil or parchment paper on my baking sheets! Ewwwwww.

    The lunches look fab. I totally want a spiralizer!

    Yikes! I had bought some new non-stick fry pans, and when my parents came to my house over Christmas, they were using forks to make their eggs and scratched up my pan. Aaargh! I was like…here’s a wooden spatula! Use this! But it was already too late…hate to see the teflon that they were eating…
