Two Candles

Hey hey hey 😀 How was your day? Ours was super productive and bueno <3

After a glorious bfast prepared by the Pilot

eggs

(Eggs and toast FTW- covered in salsa)

we started unpacking frenzy 2011. We got through a ton of boxes, and then took a trip to World Market as a break.

Cushions for 75% off? Don’t mind if I do….

1d1c5d6844b844fd8c0abbfc60a9e25f_7 b7609e80ee5d42cca6a8f836e7934f76_7

We grabbed some cushions for the outdoor set

patio

+ the balcony lounge chair. I’ve already dubbed it the blog chair 😉 [Also picked up our other 2 dining room chairs that were on hold, since the first location we went to last week only had 4, some teak oil, flower arrangements and candles. World Market has the best candles]

My Dadoo, Stepmom, little bros and Nana came over to check out our progress so far, and brought over a beautiful balcony table and chairs, plus this book:

book

I can’t wait to dive in 🙂

Lunch was way too much Chipoddle.

chipoddle

Vegetarian salad with black beans, hot salsa, pico, and double guac. It gave me heartburn and I’m miserably full, but it was so delicious.

The Pilot is munching eegee’s for dinner and I’ll probably roll with a smoothie later, since I’m still stuffed.

This week’s meal ideas are going to be inspired by some recipes in here:clean eating

Tonight will be a late-y since I have a [fun] project to finish up for tomorrow, but I hope everyone had a lovely Sunday!

See ya bright and early! <3

xoxo

ear candles

They’ve always given me the heeby jeebies but from the description it’s supposed to be an enjoyable experience. Supposedly you can hear the sound of the ocean while the opposite end of the candle is lit [the other end is.. in your ear]

My madre asked me to pick some up for my stepdad, who has been having some trouble with his hearing. It was hilarious because the way my mom explained it to me was: “remember in Keeping Up With the Kardashians when Khloe put that candle in Bruce’s ear to help with his hearing? Would you mind picking some up?”

Holy moly is that a lot of guac! Yummm!

  2. kate on July 31, 2011 at 11:33 pm

Ahh I was talking to a friend who did the wax candles and loved them I kinda wanna try it!

I’m tried the ear candling and it did nothing for me — my poor mom had to help me with it and she was so worried that I was going to set my body on fire. What did help me: lay on your side and pour a few drops of mineral oil in your ear, let it sit for a few minutes and then flip to your other side — it really helps to clean out your ears. Or you can go to the doctor and have them clean out your ears. That is even better actually.

    • Fitnessista on July 31, 2011 at 11:42 pm

good to know, i’ll tell my madre to tell my stepdad that if it doesn’t work

    • Leslie Wingate on July 31, 2011 at 11:43 pm

My mom did hydrogen peroxide and it bubbled in our ears. Oh, it tickled! I wonder if that really worked. 😉

      • SaraRM on August 1, 2011 at 7:09 am

Ive done all of the above including the wax. The candle felt kinda strange and can kinda hurt(pop) if it is really clogged but I think the candle worked best for me. It brought out the most “junk”. But obviously “results may vary” ha 🙂

  4. Leslie Wingate on July 31, 2011 at 11:35 pm

I remember the excitement of our first pregnancy. Gosh, everything was documented and so amazing. The second one wasn’t as much since I was chasing around the first one who was only ONE! As you say…. we be “cray cray”. 😉
The candles…I saw that! Creeps me out, but seemed to work? Can’t wait for a follow-up. All this talk of World Market is making me want to move out of this small town! I found a Larabar and nearly fainted. lol I’m making my first green juice tomorrow, but I don’t have a pear! I have mango. They were 2 for $1!

Have a great week little momma (and baby co-pilot)

Ahhh! My roommates and I used to get those ear candles at our apartment back in college. It was really weird at first, but we kept buying them so I guess we liked it haha.

      hahah! they scare me

I know that some people love the ear candling and I loved the Bruce episode on the Kardashians but I actually have heard that things can go horribly wrong with the ear candling. I have never tried it b/c of some stories I’ve heard on natural living/holistic living online boards and communities. I am scared off! But hey, if it works, awesome.

The patio cushions and World Market finds are great!

And can’t wait to see what you end up doing with the nursery! 🙂

I am so far behind in your blog that I almost choked when I saw you’re expecting! SO excited and happy for you and the Pilot! I’ve been reading you forever now so it feels like I “know” you, and I’m so truly excited for you to add a little baby boy to your family. Congratulations (very belatedly)!!

    • Fitnessista on July 31, 2011 at 11:43 pm

      aww thank you, ann! 🙂

I’ve made a couple of things from the Clean Eating mag this month! The hub and I loved the Ginger Soy Chicken and Edamame Stir-Fry. I really like the Watermelon Blueberry Smoothie and Honeydew Cucumber Smoothie in the meal planning section. I want to try making the Semifreddo sometime soon. I’m anxious to see what you make!

  12. Allison on July 31, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Ohhhhhhhhh i love that at Chipotle!!! I always get the veggie salad cause its like the veggie bowl plus lettuce:):) and yay world market!!! I just moved into a new place and i totally need to make a stop there…oh and at ikea too:):)

  13. jen on July 31, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I used to do ear candling and loved them my ears felt so clear after. But then I read it can damage the ears so I stoped. Once you get used to them its very calming!

  14. Krystina on July 31, 2011 at 11:49 pm

The progress on your house is beautiful so far. 🙂

  15. chelsea on July 31, 2011 at 11:49 pm

I’ve had ear waxing done before! It’s such a weird/different experience but it really does help! I love cutting open the candle at the end and looking at all the dirt that was in my ear lol.

  16. aj on July 31, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Okay. Don’t mean to be a complete naysayer about the ear candles, but they are complete waste. I was intrigued by the idea a few years ago, and did a little research. The only real medical research I could find were cautions against the danger of hot melting wax near one’s ear. The sound of the ocean is just the sound of the candle wax and other ingredients and its amplified by, well, a giant candle going right up to your ear drum. People will testify that you can see wax and impurities being drawn out of your ear, but really, its just stuff thats burned from the candle itself. There have been tests done checking for the “negative pressure” the candle manufacturer’s claim the candle produces, but there really is evidence to support this claim.

All in all, if your stepdad wants his ears cleaned, the doc would probably be way more help. If you want a “relaxing experience”, a massage or yoga are probably a lot safer and more effective. haha.

  17. Destini on July 31, 2011 at 11:50 pm

I had seen the Keeping up with the Kardashians with this candle thing. I know someone who uses one, and they quite enjoy it. Seems rather odd to me 🙂

  18. Angelina on July 31, 2011 at 11:50 pm

You got a great deal at CostPlus. Also that salad looks really delicious. I order something similar but I like the lime cilantro rice at the bottom. I know white rice isn’t the healthiest option, but I like it too much to cut it out completely. I remember reading that ear candling can be dangerous. I would suggest going to the doctor’s for any hearing issues first. I know I’m wayy late but congratulations on your upcoming baby!

  19. Jenna on July 31, 2011 at 11:52 pm

That salad looks way too delish for me to be eyeing at midnight. I live nowhere near a chipotle and always force my bf to eat there for lunch when I’m by his house. I shouldn’t say “force”– boys and their burritos!

  20. Emily on August 1, 2011 at 12:00 am

DO IT!!! It cleans your ears out soooo well..when I was younger I always opened the bottom of the candle up to see all the gunk that got sucked out…believe me—they work 🙂

  21. Jenn B on August 1, 2011 at 12:07 am

I’ve done ear candling and thought I noticed a difference. I’m a compulsive q-tipper so I guess ear candling gave me the impression that it was effective 🙂 have a pan with water in it near by so that when you snip the ends it will immediately meet it’s wet death! Good luck if you try it, when you unreel the results beware, it’s gross but sickly fascinating 🙂

  22. Sydney on August 1, 2011 at 12:12 am

Way to go with the packing and I must say I too eyed the gorgeous yellow/white/grey damask at World Market. As far as the ear candles go, I have used them and yes they do get actual wax out…but be careful because even with the plate we left a burn spot on the carpet. Oops! While that was quite a while ago, I have taken Audiology for my degree and our instructor really recommended NOT to use the candles. Cerumen (aka earwax) is good for the ears and not only fights off bacteria and other toxins but lubricates the structures in the ear. If your dad is having hearing issues he can always ask for a referral to see an Audiologist for a good ole’ fashion ear flush from the pros.

  23. Laura @ prettylittlewords on August 1, 2011 at 12:15 am

Hey Gina! I studied audiology in college (study of hearing and the auditory system) and please please please donnnnn’t do the ear candling. It’s not a huge risk, but there is absolutely nothing to back them up…it’s an old wive’s tail. I’m usually in favor of “natural” medicine/healing, but if your stepdad is having trouble with his hearing, he needs to see an audiologist, not try ear candling! The ears are built to clean themselves out naturally, and if that’s not working, a professional can clean them out for you.

Not trying to sound preachy at all, but I spent a lot of time learning about this stuff in college — trust me, it’s not a good idea. If you have any questions about it, I’d be more than happy to chat more on the subject!

  24. Krystin on August 1, 2011 at 12:15 am

..can i just say that I L-O-V-E that you said ‘chipoddle’?! My boyfriend and I alwaysss jokingly pronounce it that way! I literally laughed out loud haha 🙂

  25. Carle on August 1, 2011 at 12:26 am

My husband and I did the ear candle’s last weekend! They are amazing, and I highly recommend them! We do them twice a year! They remove tons of debris, and your ear just feels lighter. I shared them with my Mom and Sister this weekend, and they loved them too. I fell asleep during mine, they are super relaxing!

  26. J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) on August 1, 2011 at 12:29 am

I can honestly say I have never heard of ear… Candles! Serves me rift for not watching the kardashians, huh.

    • Fitnessista on August 1, 2011 at 12:50 am

the kardashians have taught me about so many things. haha

  27. Ginna on August 1, 2011 at 12:31 am

Gina – oh NO! those candle things are so dangerous. As a nurse practitioner we always discourage patients from using those. If your step dad is having hearing issues he needs to get checked out by his primary care provider. They will look in the ear and if their is blockage do a very safe eat lavage.

    • Hillary on August 1, 2011 at 9:39 am

I agree, Gina. I was having some ear troubles a few weeks ago, and every body I talked to said to NEVER use those. Be careful!

  28. Alyssa on August 1, 2011 at 12:33 am

I tried the ear candle thing once and I wasn’t impressed at all. I’m not really sure if it did anything.
Maybe it works for others but I didn’t feel the effects.
I do remember one time having really waxy build up in my ears when I was younger and my doctor just took a syringe of warm water and squirted it in my ear gently to break up the wax and that felt great.

  29. Kris | iheartwellness.com on August 1, 2011 at 12:34 am

Hahaha! I was just talking to my dad about ear candling yesterday after i watched KUWTK the other night!!! LOL! My ear was plugged the other day and could have used it, but was scared sh%tless!

    xxoo

I lurve Chipotle veggie burrito bowls. I also love creating my own at home– super easy and more healthy, too.
I love lighting incense for scent; so calming and wonderful 🙂

  31. kt on August 1, 2011 at 1:44 am

Sooo funny about your mom referencing the Kardashians. I don’t know anything about the candles, but hope you will do a report about your stepdad’s experience.

Your new house looks so cute; I can’t wait to see what you do with the nursery!

  32. Jessica on August 1, 2011 at 1:47 am

My mom had the ear candle done on her when she was losing her hearing to ear wax (gross…but she has a ton of ear issue’s so it goes with the territory). It was astounding the difference it made. If you have any ear wax issues I’ve heard great reviews. Just don’t look in the candle thing when you are done…. seriously…

  33. Martha on August 1, 2011 at 2:12 am

Hi! I’m an idiot and can’t figure out how to email you. I’m wondering if I can reproduce your Redeployment Tips post in our FRG newsletter (edited a little for space). Thanks!

  34. Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance on August 1, 2011 at 5:20 am

Haha no I have never seen those ear things anywhere before. I personally would be scared to death to light a candle in my ear, but hey– thats just me

  35. Karen @ She Flies With Her Own Wings on August 1, 2011 at 5:51 am

Love the Chipotle! That is exactly what I order when I go there, and it’s usually super filling, they really load the veggies and guac in there! I haven’t had it in ages and your pic definitely inspired me to go there soon…basic vegetarian mex food is really cheap and easy to make, but sometimes a Chipotle run is absolutely necessary.

  36. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on August 1, 2011 at 6:29 am

    Haha I hope they work!

  37. Jessica P on August 1, 2011 at 6:32 am

Don’t ear candle!!!!! I am an audiologist and did a small project on them during grad school. They are a total hoax and can actual cause damage to your eardrum!!

  38. lindsay on August 1, 2011 at 7:02 am

that is hilarious. Is that a candle? I am intrigued! World market is the best for new home decor. Enjoy!

  39. Ami@dashofcurry.com on August 1, 2011 at 7:38 am

I really love how your patio looks! So cozy!! I have never been to (or even seen) a World Market. If I get a chance to go there it seems like I may never leave!

  40. Laura @ Meet Virginia on August 1, 2011 at 7:42 am

I have used ear candles before and I LOVE them! I know there is some controversy as to whether or not they work and wether or not they are safe, but I have always had a good experience using them! If you open them up after using them, you can see all of the wax that it pulled out of your ear (kind of gross), and it is unbelievable! I’m a fan.

  41. Kate on August 1, 2011 at 8:23 am

Love seeing all the progress on your house! So funny about the ear candle thingy…because I JUST finished reading an ‘interesting’ article on ear wax! lol http://chealth.canoe.ca/channel_section_details.asp?text_id=5743&channel_id=165&relation_id=2594

  42. Kasey on August 1, 2011 at 8:30 am

I’ve done ear candling several times (waxy ears runs in my family). It’s much less invasive then going to the doctor and having them shoot water in your ear with a huge syringe! It’s pretty relaxing if you give yourself plenty of time to get through two candles per ear and have someone helping you to snip off the burnt part of the candle half-way through and scrape out the wax. You’re supposed to shove it down into your ear canal until you can hear the faint crackling of the flame, but that doesn’t really help if your ears are so waxy you can’t even hear! Good luck!

  43. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on August 1, 2011 at 8:50 am

I know some people that have done that and they swear by it! It is a weird concept but if it works it works!

  48. Gillian on August 1, 2011 at 10:26 am

haha yes! the ear candle! supposedly it will draw the toxins out of your ear canal.. and help with your sinuses. ive never had a sinus problem, but it was an interesting experience. just be careful with the ash at the end.. we burned a lovely hole in our carpet 🙂

  49. Madeline (Food Fitness & Family) on August 1, 2011 at 10:31 am

    Sigh – I miss Eegees. 🙁

That nursery book is too cute!

  50. Carolyn on August 1, 2011 at 10:48 am

We always did the ear candles because we were competitive swimmers. It helped us not get swimmer’s ear. It is definitely a different way to clear out your ears! 🙂 You get used to it after a while though and it’s not so bad!
