{Video post} Not a costume

Halloween ended up being a fun whirlwind over here:

Teaching Zumba

[Twist my arm, eh?]

followed by some shopping…

A lovely day indeed 🙂

Remember last week when I said night weeks are over? Apparently it was a joke on me because the Pilot had a late night Halloween flight. I was glad that he flew instead of one of the pilots who has kids, and I just used the evening to hang out with the fam. For the holiday, many of my friends were with their husbands taking their new babies and young kids trick-or-treating (didn’t want to third-wheel it), while my other friends were out clubbing, so mom, nana and I enjoyed a girl’s night.

Breakfast of champions:

quesadilla

Egg and sliced goat cheese quesadilla with salsa

Snacks packed up to-go:

snacks

Organic GIANT grapes, an apple, and leftover sweet potato and black bean chili.

I ended up eating the fruit, but not the chili since I forgot it at the madre’s.

Conveniently, Whole Foods is on the way home and is often my post doc appt treat:

hot bar2

Chicken, miso-almond slaw, lentil and chickpea salad, chicken and a spaghetti squash pile topped with marinara. It’s funny because since we have Trader Joe’s and Sunflower Market here, I don’t go to Whole Foods nearly as much as I used to. Our bank account enjoys this greatly.

Throughout the day I also enjoyed a few mini Almond Joy’s and a Reese’s PB cup 🙂

So I was a little nervous about teaching Zumba at the high school yesterday. One of my friends who teaches choir at the school asked me to do a 5 or so dances during lunch after a flash mob that they had planned, and that they’d have a speaker set up in the dance room and one outside, so the kids at lunch could hear the music. I was nervous because high schoolers can be a tough crowd- they’re either shy, “too cool,” or will have a LOT of fun and get into it (which is the dream situation). When I taught dance back in the day, my high school hip hop girls were some of my favorites to teach. Today reminded me exactly why.

I have to give major props to the girls in the front, who came in yelling “Zumba!! ZUMBA!!!!” – their energy was fantastic.  No one had seen the dances before, or ever taken Zumba and they picked it up like pros! I was so impressed at grateful to everyone for participating.

Of course things have been dialed down a little bit (I like to get a little crazy out there), but here are a couple of videos of me teaching Zumba with a 31-week baby belly:

My fave dance right now:

A classic (just a snippet since it’s not my choreography):

Feel free to dance along!

The best part was when students came up to me afterwards to ask if my belly was a Halloween costume. They thought I was *dressed up* 🙂

About to hop on a fun Skype conference call- I’ll be sure to post the deets (and a giveaway) tonight!

See ya later with a Family post <3

xoxo

Gina

I LOVE the smile on your face while dancing : )

instructors with dance background are the best at zumba!! especially if they enjoy it as much as you do! i’ve seen quite a few pregnant fitness group instructors or class participants, no biggie. i figure if they’re shaking it must not be hurting them or the baby. although, i must admit that those last few weeks i say to myself “what, she didn’t have it yet??” LOL

  3. Kim on November 1, 2011 at 8:00 pm

So impressed with your baby rocking zumba skills. I was a dancer for most of my life and recently tried my first Zumba class. I was definitely the white girl who could not loosen up and shake her booty. I felt so defeated and embarrassed I haven’t been back yet! 🙁

those videos remind me of how much I enjoyed zumba! I used to love it but the last time I went to a class I had a teacher that made me really uncomfortable, so I didn’t go to the class at my gym again. I need to go back (new teacher now!).

I’ve been doing Zumba for about a year now, and these videos totally make me wish I had a reason to make the trip fro TX to AZ and take one of your classes! It’s awesome that the students were so receptive to hop in and join you! Looks like y’all had a ton of fun!

  19. Carolyn on November 2, 2011 at 12:39 am

Wow Gina! You and baby Fitnessista are slaying those Zumba moves. Baby isn’t even born yet and I know she dances with more coordination than I do. These videos made me miss your DT class so much!! I may not ever be mistaken for a dancer but I sure had fun trying thanks to your energy and passion for it.

  23. Jenn on November 2, 2011 at 8:26 am

  26. Carrie on November 2, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Okay, YOU ARE AMAZING… when the Nugette is begging to start dance class at 24 months make sure you remember this!!! AWESOME!!

You are such a great dancer…and reggaeton while pregnant…no wonder the kids were impressed. Thanks for sharing!!!

  27. Suzanne on November 2, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Sorry – delayed comment here. I didn’t get a chance to watch the Zumba videos until just now.

You are such an awesome Zumba instructor! I love Zumba, but I’m too self conscious to take a class, because it takes me a while to follow the moves. I get them eventually – but after looking like a doofus for a little bit. 🙂
Your class looks fun – I’d definitely take it. Too bad I’m all the way in Jersey.

Rocking the Zumba with the baby bump. Go Gina! <3

I have a random question/request: Do you know how to Samba? It's the one dance that I can't do! I've tried so many times, but I get tripped up with the coordination of hips and shake-age! It would be awesome if you could post an instructional video. 😉

  28. suki on November 2, 2011 at 9:28 pm

loved the zumba videos! you and baby have got the moves! 😛 i am all uncoordinated.

  29. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) on November 2, 2011 at 11:44 pm

Girlfran got some sweet moves! I wish we could team teach sometime–that would be the funnest class of my life. Shake on, baby momma. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on November 2, 2011 at 11:52 pm

  30. Holly on November 3, 2011 at 7:42 am

I love how the girls yell “She’s Pregnant! She’s Pregnant!!!” (at 0:10-0:12) Hilarious

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2011 at 11:19 am

      those girls were HILARIOUS

  31. Meaghan on November 3, 2011 at 5:53 pm

I LOVE the videos! I wish I could take a Zumba class with you – you make it look SO fun!

  32. Elizabeth on November 4, 2011 at 8:32 pm

OMG, I am dying seeing you in that tank — I have that one and wear it when I’ve had a few too many treat days in a row and the bellay is a bit poochay. I’m definitely going to keep it in case I ever need it to surround a baby bellay.

I just wanted to commend you Gina on all of your dedication to staying fit and eating well for the baby. You are such an example to the women who read your bloggy (and the women you come into contact with — hello high school girls!) that YOU make the choice to have a strong, fit pregnancy and while treats are fine, there’s no reason to live off of junk during your pregnancy.

This is a big deal, I’ve seen a lot of women give up on being fit because they were afraid to be active while pregnant for fear it might hurt their baby. I always wonder how their little muscles are going to push if they’ve been napping for 9 months. Anyways, you get 2 gold stars in my book for being such a great example. I love you!

    Mush mush.

    • Fitnessista on November 5, 2011 at 4:18 pm

haha it used to be my tank for that, too! it used to be super baggy and now, it fits me like a regular tank 😉
thank you so much for such a sweet comment for the compliments! i’ve definitely had more junk/treats than usual, but for the most part am trying to stick to my usual routine
      love you friend!

  33. Caitlin on November 5, 2011 at 11:29 am

Firstly, you look AMAZING. Secondly, I’m moving to Tucson so I can always take your classes! How fun!

    • Fitnessista on November 5, 2011 at 3:55 pm

thank you!!! when do you get here??

  34. Lauren on November 9, 2011 at 3:52 pm

not sure if you’ve mentioned this already, but what’s the name of the second song? i can’t get it out of my head! 🙂

  35. lindsay on December 22, 2011 at 11:37 pm

Omg so good. Preggo’s and bustin a move! Made me lol it’s so awesome. Little girl has got to have a love for dance when she’s older
