{Video post} Not a costume

Halloween ended up being a fun whirlwind over here:

Teaching Zumba

back to the casa to leave out candy for trick-or-treaters

dinner with madre and nana

fortune

[Twist my arm, eh?]

followed by some shopping…

A lovely day indeed 🙂

Remember last week when I said night weeks are over? Apparently it was a joke on me because the Pilot had a late night Halloween flight. I was glad that he flew instead of one of the pilots who has kids, and I just used the evening to hang out with the fam. For the holiday, many of my friends were with their husbands taking their new babies and young kids trick-or-treating (didn’t want to third-wheel it), while my other friends were out clubbing, so mom, nana and I enjoyed a girl’s night.

Breakfast of champions:

quesadilla

Egg and sliced goat cheese quesadilla with salsa

Snacks packed up to-go:

snacks

Organic GIANT grapes, an apple, and leftover sweet potato and black bean chili.

I ended up eating the fruit, but not the chili since I forgot it at the madre’s.

Conveniently, Whole Foods is on the way home and is often my post doc appt treat:

hot bar2

Chicken, miso-almond slaw, lentil and chickpea salad, chicken and a spaghetti squash pile topped with marinara. It’s funny because since we have Trader Joe’s and Sunflower Market here, I don’t go to Whole Foods nearly as much as I used to. Our bank account enjoys this greatly.

Throughout the day I also enjoyed a few mini Almond Joy’s and a Reese’s PB cup 🙂

So I was a little nervous about teaching Zumba at the high school yesterday. One of my friends who teaches choir at the school asked me to do a 5 or so dances during lunch after a flash mob that they had planned, and that they’d have a speaker set up in the dance room and one outside, so the kids at lunch could hear the music. I was nervous because high schoolers can be a tough crowd- they’re either shy, “too cool,” or will have a LOT of fun and get into it (which is the dream situation). When I taught dance back in the day, my high school hip hop girls were some of my favorites to teach. Today reminded me exactly why.

I have to give major props to the girls in the front, who came in yelling “Zumba!! ZUMBA!!!!” – their energy was fantastic.  No one had seen the dances before, or ever taken Zumba and they picked it up like pros! I was so impressed at grateful to everyone for participating.

Of course things have been dialed down a little bit (I like to get a little crazy out there), but here are a couple of videos of me teaching Zumba with a 31-week baby belly:

My fave dance right now:

A classic (just a snippet since it’s not my choreography):

Feel free to dance along!

The best part was when students came up to me afterwards to ask if my belly was a Halloween costume. They thought I was *dressed up* 🙂

About to hop on a fun Skype conference call- I’ll be sure to post the deets (and a giveaway) tonight!

See ya later with a Family post <3

xoxo

Gina

Aw I’m glad it worked out great! Those students seem really into it; that’s perfect choreography for them, that’s how I loved to dance at that age!

Love that they thought your belly was a costume – that’s a great compliment!

  2. Destini on November 1, 2011 at 11:54 am

WOW You look amazing for 30+ weeks! And you just shake! Looks like soooo much fun. I actually just purchased a dealfind today that has $20 for 20 zumba classes. Can’t wait 🙂

Gina you are the cutest! I can’t get over how you are always glowing!

The Zumba class at the high school looked super fun, not surprised that the girls took to your positive energy and awesome dance moves right away 🙂

  4. Mary on November 1, 2011 at 11:56 am

Oh my goodness, you look so great! & all of the students seem so into it, especially in the second video. This is probably a dumb comment, but I didn’t really realize you could have that much mobility when you’re that far along… so thank you proving otherwise!

  5. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on November 1, 2011 at 11:56 am

You are the cutest pregnant person ever!!! Way to shake it no matter what!

  6. Melissa on November 1, 2011 at 11:58 am

You look awesome! If I didn’t know, I probably would have guessed it was a costume too… seeing as how you can shake it like no other preggo and you’re super tiny everywhere else! Glad you had fun!

  7. Kerryne on November 1, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Girl you can mooooove! Belly and all, so adorable! Loved those videos had me dancing in my seat 😉

  8. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on November 1, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Happy Halloween! SO glad you had a blast teaching Zumba! Way to rock it out girl! And did you come home to any candy in that bowl? I may not be giving trick or treaters a lot of credit but I’m pretty sure a lot of kids take a bowl left out as an invitation for them to dump the whole thing in their bag.

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 12:13 pm

it was totally empty when we got back

  9. Shayla @ The Good Life on November 1, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Whoa you can shake it!!! You look so amazing and you look fantastic teaching it with your baby bump – I love it! I wish I could take Zumba from you – I love your routines and you make it look so fun and sexy 🙂

  10. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on November 1, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I <3 the hot bar at Whole Foods, but I always end up getting wayyyy too much food, like a pound at least haha.

  11. Kim on November 1, 2011 at 12:28 pm

You are too cute with you and little fitnessista 🙂 I hope I can move like that at 31 weeks when I’m preggers!

  12. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on November 1, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Glad you had a nice Halloween with your fam… and next year you will be going trick-or-treating with your little one! So exciting! And LOVED seeing the Zumba videos! You are amazing!! Loved seeing how you shake it and it’s hard to believe that you are 31 wks pregnant! You look awesome!

  13. Lisa @ Fresh Spinach on November 1, 2011 at 12:42 pm

You are, without a doubt, the most amazing pregnant woman I have ever seen! What an inspiration to see you so active and healthy! (Most women I know who are pregnant having been using it as an excuse to eat cookies all day and laze around.)
I’m not ready to have kids yet, but when I do, I hope to be as active as you are.

  14. Lauren on November 1, 2011 at 12:43 pm

WOW…you go girl!!! I’m quite impressed by how fast you can move at 31 weeks, you are awesome!

    • Emily on November 1, 2011 at 2:31 pm

those vids are amazing, i loved how when you broke out into a really funky move, they were all like “oooooh yeeeah!” hahaha

  15. Jamie @ FoodinRealLife on November 1, 2011 at 12:47 pm

I’m speechless. I’m 27 weeks and I’m just completely blown away. You can seriously MOVE it! I hope you recognize how awesome that is!!

  16. amanda on November 1, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I love the fact that belly and all you were bouncing off the walls with energy and some of the teenagers didnt even have that much energy. Definitely wish i had been this active during my pregnancy. The women in my family kept telling em to put my feet up and take naps and dont walk and now they ask me when im going to lose the weight, gee thanks guys.

  17. Beth (Well I'll Be) on November 1, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Wow, I’m totally impressed at how much you can shake it at 31 weeks! You look amazing, no wonder they all thought it was a costume!

  18. Conni on November 1, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Okay you are seriously my favorite person ever. I’m just gonna move to Arizona and spend all my time with you. Cool? Okay good. 🙂

  19. Lara @ six times the yum on November 1, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Gosh! Zumba looks like so much fun! I’ve wanted to do it since forever but the Zumba gym classes at my college get filled up quickly by upper classmen. Hopefully this spring is my semester to take it! I love how active you are even with your pregnancy. When I am pregnant (in the very, very far off future), I hope to continue being as active as possible/allowed! You go girl!!

  20. Michaela on November 1, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Gina, you ROCK! like, you totally rock!! I have always thought u were great at Zumba, but omg, you are unreal! so energetic and I love how you shake with that belly 🙂 I bet your little girls loves it! Awesome!

  26. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on November 1, 2011 at 2:23 pm

    “Dressed Up” as a pregnant lady…ahhh, that’s classic 🙂

Glad you were able to teach and it looks like everyone loved it. It’s always fun to connect with people/kids/students of any age who are INTO and excited about the class. Those are my fave yoga classes/students to teach…the ones who really want to be there and have contagious energy 🙂

Sorry Pilot had to fly at night again 🙁

  27. Elly on November 1, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Hi Gina! I think I have only commented one other time but I love your blog! I’m just curious what you think about Body Pump classes. I really enjoy strength-training workouts and want to make them a regular part of my routine because I want to preserve my bone density to prevent osteoporosis later. I’m a college student and have access to a gym where I could do my own weight workouts, but I live in Washington where it gets COLD in the winter and the parking is ridiculously expensive and I just can’t excited about walking 15 mins (each way) in the cold to the gym! I have discovered another group fitness gym nearby where I can drive and take body pump classes regularly for a pretty good deal. I have found that I get a little bored with always doing the same exercises at Body Pump…they don’t switch up the moves that often. But I just wanted to know if you have any thoughts about Body Pump and if you think its an effective way to strength train.

Thanks! And you look amazing at 31 weeks!!

  28. Kim on November 1, 2011 at 2:59 pm

loved the videos – zumba looks so fun! 🙂

  29. Kristi @ lifesprinkles.com on November 1, 2011 at 2:59 pm

ahh looks like so much fun! 🙂

  30. Maria on November 1, 2011 at 3:09 pm

You got some moves there mama!!!! I’m so impressed! You are an excellent role model for all pregnant moms & future moms to be 🙂 Like a previous commenter said, I know most women who look at pregnancy as a time not to work out and “eat for two”. ALL of my girlfriends have this mentality and I’m soooo thankful that I’m not one of them! Because of bloggers like you and Emily Malone, I know that when I get pregnant I can remain active & healthy and have a rockin baby bod! Keep up the great work!

  31. Laury @ thefitnessdish on November 1, 2011 at 3:15 pm

you are the freakin cutest. Oh my look at you shake at 31 weeks! I am seriously jealous of your moves!!! I am majorly regretting quitting jazz, tap and ballet after 9 years of it as a kid. Look at ho wmuch fun you’re having!

  32. Sarah on November 1, 2011 at 3:16 pm

how crap girl! to move like that pregnant! im super impressed!

  33. Jen Correa @ Mom's Gotta Run on November 1, 2011 at 3:19 pm

OMG! You are awesome. To move that much, that fast, that pregnant! God bless!

  34. Melodie on November 1, 2011 at 3:19 pm

i just sat here watching the video with my jaw to the floor. i’ve NEVER seen a preggo lady move like that. i seriously thought at one point, your baby girl might splat out on the ground. 😉 so impressed. thanks for sharing. and glad that students got into it for you!

  35. Kersten on November 1, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I so enjoy your uplifting blog!! Please tell me what brand tortilla you use for your wraps. Thanks!!! K

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 4:50 pm

that one is a trader joe’s brown rice tortilla, but i like the sonoma teff ones the best

  36. Lindsay @ Lindsay's List on November 1, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Geez…you put regular NON-pregnant women to shame!! Awesome job keeping that fitness level up at 31 weeks. I remember when I was 40 weeks (taking a step class). The manager came up to me with a worried face and asked me to leave because they didn’t want to clean up after me if my water broke. HA! (actually broke the next day!)

  37. joelle (on a pink typewriter) on November 1, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Haha love the title of the video! I think it’s so great that you’re still teaching/working! I’m sure it get tough/exhausting.

  38. Allison on November 1, 2011 at 4:34 pm

you dancing with that belly is so adorable! it cracked me up and made me smile.

  39. Emily on November 1, 2011 at 4:47 pm

My boyfriend is also in the army and I’m starting to learn that what the army says and what they do are two completely different things. Glad you were able to spend time with the girls!
I’m so amazed by your Zumba ability. Shake it mama!

  40. Laura on November 1, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Gina you are SO COOL. Love that belly Zumba. Love. It.

  41. Jen on November 1, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Wow! My old pregnant self from 10 years ago just got even more exhausted looking at you dance (I was always tired, I think from the 1st day I became pregnant, but I was 38, too!). That’s wonderful.
Those kids were great – I liked the skinny little football player the best.

  42. Leslie on November 1, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Love it! Glad it worked out that everybody was pumped for the class! I love your belly. 😀 And I can probably bet that you are gonna do a lot of bouncing with baby when she gets here to soothe her. She’ll be used to it!!! 😀

  43. Lin on November 1, 2011 at 5:15 pm

HOW DO YOU DO THAT? Seriously! You made Zumba look absolutely effortless and with a baby in your belly! It’s awesome. I’m a fairly new reader but first time commenter. I seriously enjoyed the video. The girls looked like they did too!

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 5:22 pm

thank you, and thank you so much for saying hi!

  44. Sara on November 1, 2011 at 5:45 pm

Oh, you look GREAT (and certainly not iron deficient). You put me to shame with your coordinated moves and energy, and I’m not even hauling a 20lb belly.

  45. Aundra on November 1, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Um, hi. You ROCK. 31 weeks and busting out Zumba moves? And you look like you’re having fun, too!!!

  46. vânia on November 1, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Dear fitnessista i loved to see u doing the zumba with your baby, you’re amazing. Do u know the song “Danza Kuduro” (Don Omar ft Lucenzo). It’s featured in the fast and furious 5 film. I love it, i think u will too. Look it up in youtube if u do not know it. hope u like it and sorry for promoting the song in your blog, but when i saw u dancing i thought that u had to listen to it. love your blog a loooooooottttt

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 6:21 pm

thank you, vania! yes, i’ve used it for warm-up before – it’s one of my favorites!! 🙂

  47. Clare on November 1, 2011 at 6:22 pm

I think I would die if I took a zumba class from you (I’m too unfit/unco-ordinated!), but I feel like you would be ALOT of fun on a night out, ha!

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 6:23 pm

hahah! you have no idea 😉

  48. Petrice on November 1, 2011 at 6:28 pm

love it! I wonder what the baby is doing inside when you are doing zumba???!!!

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 6:35 pm

i’ve been wondering that too! she always kicks when i’m done teaching, like she wants more though 😉

  49. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on November 1, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Yay that’s awesome that the zumba class went well! I get nervous around high schoolers too – they can be SO judgmental! It’s a bit intimidating. 😛

  50. anonymous on November 1, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Wow, was I the only one who was cringing while watching this??? That looks really scary to be shaking like that. Everyone just tries to sugar-coat it.

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2011 at 7:45 pm

My dance moves are that bad? Haha
