Wake up slow

After one night of nightmares (which I wrote about), the next night I woke up to a fork in the bed.

Not even joking. Bella took my “lunch fork” out of my work gym bag and brought it into our bed. When I rolled over, I thought my leg was on something wet, which was enough to have me jump up in fear. A fork. Who knew.

Last night was peaceful and lovely- an awesome slumber after a nighttime cardio sesh, date with the creepy foam roller, and set of deadlifts with a barbell.

I’m really trying to build strength in my back, since it’s been hurting lately. I’m not quite sure if it’s from all the body poppin’ in Zumba, or from picking Liv up all day. Either way, I’m trying to focus on core strength in general.

Breakfast:

Burrito

Dinner last night was made my someone else. We were running errands at La Encantada and decided to eat there since we were both already hungry.

AMAZING Ahi tuna appetizer (with wasabi sauce)

Ahi tuna

and the salad beast of my dreams:

Salad 4

Greens, jicama, strawberries, grilled shrimp and goat cheese with balsamic dressing. Salad love.

It’s a Zumba day over here, so I’m about to load my iPod and get everything together. Two new songs today! Here’s hoping I remember them and don’t end up making something up on the spot. Not that I would ever… 😉

Hope you have a very happy humpday!

xoxo

Gina

I just learned ones from 38, I haven’t gotten to watch 39 yet. I will before I teach this weekend though!

        • Fitnessista on June 20, 2012 at 12:04 pm

you’ll love it! the live class and one-on-one are both surprisingly good

  6. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on June 20, 2012 at 12:00 pm

LOL about the fork in the bed! Totally random comment: I seem to always find spoons in my purse. I just checked, and I have 3! I don’t know how they accumulate in there!

  7. theresa @ apoonsulofsunshine on June 20, 2012 at 12:01 pm

I agree with Claire! There is something about strawberries + goat cheese + balsamic that never gets old and is so incredibly satisfying!

  8. Trainer Kjirsten on June 20, 2012 at 12:05 pm

That salad looks amaze! I have a 5 month old daughter too, and I’ve been totally trying to strenthen my back/core as well. My middle back gets so tired/hurts on some days. I’m pretty sure it’s from carrying around 14lbs all day and not to mention breastfeeding!

  9. Krystina (Krystina Yogini) on June 20, 2012 at 12:09 pm

I’m going to do a nice yoga sequence because my muscles are sore from a weights workout (inspired by your Summer Shape Up – those tricep push-ups are KILLER) so I want to take it easy today. On the menu? Dinner is up in the air – I’m deciding between broccoli cheddar quinoa casserole and chicken/tofu & broccoli and rice noodles. I have a giant Costco sized bag of broccoli that expires today so I want to use up as much as I can.

Question about deadlifts – can you do them with dumbbells? I work out in the apartment fitness room and all that is available is a set of dumbbells and some cable equipment.

    • Sara on June 21, 2012 at 6:02 am

I do deadlifts with dumbbells, no problem. The only danger is whacking yourself on the shin with the weight. Gotta concentrate.

  10. Beth on June 20, 2012 at 12:10 pm

so I know I am kinda skipping ahead here, but because I have a kickball game tomorrow night I would like to take my rest day tomorrow and do my Tabata Thursday tonight. Is there anyway you can share the details? I am familiar with tabata–so really just want to know what you want us to do.. Thanks…

  11. Jamie on June 20, 2012 at 12:18 pm

I did my steady cardio early this morning before it got hot out! 2 miles- check!

  12. Kayla on June 20, 2012 at 12:19 pm

Mmmm.. all that food looks like HEAVEN, ‘specially that ahi tuna. Love the workout shirt in the bottom pic, do you mind me asking where you got it from? BTW, I’m SO SORE! Haven’t worked out in a long time (I’m 4 weeks post partum) But an awesome sore that I’ve missed. Thanks for your program! I’m a new reader and love your blog. 🙂

  13. Shayna on June 20, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Thanks for the shout out! After doing Workout 2 + the ab burner last night, I am sore today and taking it easy. Looking forward to Tabata Thursday. I second the request for sharing the details a little earlier, if possible, since I workout at 6 am EST.

    • Amy on June 21, 2012 at 11:25 am

I agree that it’s hard to follow the plan due to the timeliness of posts! It’s currently 11:24am Thursday EST and I could not do the Tabata workout for today as it hasn’t been posted yet! Makes me sad 🙁 A lot of people work out early- Seems like posting the day before would be better for everyone, don’t you think? Thanks!

      • Fitnessista on June 21, 2012 at 11:30 am

        hey girl,
the tabata workouts will always go up thursday- usually much earlier than it was up today. i had to upload the 8-minute video 4 times (each took over an hour) before getting it to work. i know to plan better for next week. sorry about that!

    • Fitnessista on June 21, 2012 at 11:32 am

      hey girl!
sorry it just now went up- had some uploading probs, but it will be up earlier for next week

  14. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on June 20, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Seared ahi tuna is the best! I would have been tempted to just order 3 of those as my main meal. 😉

  15. Kathleen @ KatsHealthCorner on June 20, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Your salad looks DELICIOUS!!! I love the addition of the strawberries. <3

  16. Abbey on June 20, 2012 at 12:31 pm

What kind of wraps do you buy? I have been looking for a new brand and yours look good.

  17. Amanda on June 20, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Hey Gina! I’ve been following the summer shape up (and love it) but cannt seem to stop eating at night. For example I was done with dinner and had a piece of gluten free cookie dough and thought I’d call it a night. Then dove into hummus and crackers at 11pm. I always do this and need to stop! Any suggestions? Thank you! 🙂

  18. Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy on June 20, 2012 at 12:42 pm

holy cow that IS the salad of my dreams! haha, looks delicious — so does the ahi tuna! yum! i hope your back feels better!

  19. Brigid on June 20, 2012 at 12:44 pm

I’ve been having a lot of lower back pain. I always blame the big boobies, but maybe I should try to gain some strength in my back.

I am a week behind, so I went for a 30-minute jog this morning. My muscles are on fire from Workout 1 yesterday! I’m looking forward to some gentle yoga tomorrow.

  20. Kelly on June 20, 2012 at 12:54 pm

An hour long yoga podcast was perrrrrrrrfect after yesterday (I switched Monday and Tuesday). But holy woah my butt is sore today! Can’t wait to try the shrimp curry tonight!

  21. Hillary on June 20, 2012 at 12:54 pm

I had an insane interval workout today thanks to the plan! It was the sweatiest I’ve been in a long time, and it felt kind of incredible.

  22. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 20, 2012 at 12:59 pm

I would have jumped 10 feet if a cold, pokey, sharp fork was jabbing me in my sleep…thanks, Bella 🙂

  23. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on June 20, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Mmmm strawberries, goat cheese and balsamic are pretty much my perfect salad!! That’s so funny about the random fork in your bed! Glad it didn’t hurt you!

  24. corrie anne on June 20, 2012 at 1:34 pm

You’re looking hott at the gym!!! 🙂 And that salad is pretty gorgeous too lol

    • Ellie@Fit for the Soul on June 20, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Yes yes, I agree girls! 😀 And I’m thinkiing your back pain might be from holding Liv all day~because my sister had the same problem throughout her back and then shoulders, arms, etc. She wasn’t active like you are, but I think that definitely takes a toll on a mom’s body. But frequent visits to the chiro really helped her!

  25. Tara on June 20, 2012 at 1:36 pm

So I started a week late, but so far, so good! Did my steady state cardio today, even with it being 40 degrees celcius with humidity here in Ottawa. Looking forward to my rest day tomorrow and yummy leftovers tonight (salmon, sweet potato, and asperagus). Yum!

  26. pluvk on June 20, 2012 at 1:43 pm

I am so glad it’s a rest day! My sore muscles from Workout II definitely needed it!!

  30. Abby on June 20, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Walked 3 miles with the baby and did a 40 minute vinyasa yoga session for my active recovery and I feel great

  31. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on June 20, 2012 at 3:00 pm

I know you’re very into fitness and very proactive about your body so I’m sure you’ll tackle this back problem head on, but my mom definitely ruined her back due to – well, me. I was a really tactile baby and wanted to be picked up and held all the time. She found she was always doing the hip thing, where she balanced me on one hip and leaned to one side, and always the same hip over and over. She only realized this once she’d done her back in and it’s caused her grief ever since (she’s now in her 60s!). So it’s great that you’re realizing now so you can hit that back pain head on!

  32. Katie on June 20, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Haha, you crack me up! I teach dance fitness classes, and I sometimes have to improvise too 🙂 Too much choreography to keep in my brain!

  33. Katie H on June 20, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Eats for the day so far have been overnight oats and a greek salad beast. A walk with my mom and physique 57 DVD’s are on the agenda for tonight.

  34. Melissa (Better Fit) on June 20, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Oh no! I hope your back feels better with some core training.

  35. Rachel C on June 20, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Ah, Summer Shape Up kicked my butt today! I did Workout 2 twice and then the Ab Burner routine. Ouch…I’m sore now. But a good sore!

  36. Jess on June 20, 2012 at 4:18 pm

I finished week 1 today! Need to do the ab burner tonight (I switched steady state and workout 1 so I could zumba yesterday) and then rest day tomorrow!

  37. Elle on June 20, 2012 at 4:46 pm

I went shopping today..walking around the mall counts as active recovery right? Hah. I’m planning on doing the ab burner and stretching before bed tonight. I just had a big salad with mixed greens, chicken, tomato, cucumbers, and peanut dressing…trying to pump in lots of veggies!

Eysh I think I would freak out if I woke up to a wet fork in my bed!

  38. Amy M on June 20, 2012 at 4:50 pm

Please share any tips for working the back.. and stretching the back.. I am working retail for the 1st time in my almost 32 years and owwiiiee its a pain!

  39. Rebecca on June 20, 2012 at 4:51 pm

Holy moly I just did Workout 2 + HIIT and it about killed me!! Now I see what everyone was talking about on Monday. Any modifications on the star plank thing? That was so hard!! I could only do 5 on each side. Goal for next workout is at least 7 or 8 🙂

Today was a very needed day for my body because it’s not used to doing so much sport so rest was a good thing! I just went for a little walk (1 hour) in the forest and i’m gonna stretch tonight! I have some back pain too since i fell violently from snowboard 3 years ago and except having some massages or trying to get more strength i don’t know what to do! It’s getting sloooowly better but i hope you’re gonna be fine soon! xxx Nadja

  42. Jen on June 20, 2012 at 6:01 pm

Back pain is so common! In new moms, it is usually because of the bending/lifting/carrying, as well as having your abs stretched out during pregnancy. Many times when the abs aren’t doing enough work, the back muscles pick up the slack and start to hurt. Best things are to work on the abs, keeping your belly button pulled in towards your spine with all exercises. This is especially important when doing any lifting. Also important is body mechanics. Make sure to lift with your legs instead of bending. And if you carry Liv on your hip, try to change sides frequently. Tip–if you feel back pain while doing any exercise, it is either too hard or your abs are not pulled in and engaged appropriately. Be gentle on your body. Post pregnancy the hormone relaxin takes about 5 months to leave the body, so you are more susceptible during that time.

  48. Caitlin on June 20, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Checkin in….today I just did a 10 minute stretching routine and I also played frisbee for a little bit outside. I’m really not good about rest days, so I’m really glad they are worked into the calendar.
