Weekend adventures + something is better than nothing

Hi friends! Happy Monday!

This crazy creature says, “Hello.”

Tree face

(We saw that walking from our parking spot to Pizza Port! I want to copy it for Halloween.)

How was the weekend? Hope you had an amazing one! Ours was the perfect mix of time with friends, relaxing at the house, and productivity.

Friday afternoon, I got a pedicure since reaching my toes involves some contortionist talents I do not possess, and then we met up with Jess, her husband and daughter for dinner. With many of our friends here, we like to do a little thing we call “family dinner” where we’ll all meet up at a restaurant or someone’s house to BBQ. The kids all play together and the adults enjoy some grown-up conversation. 😉 I’m notorious for texting friends for family dinner on the nights where I don’t feel like cooking (which lately has been more common than normal).

Del mar w livi

We ate at Davanti Enoteca in Del Mar, which has a wide array of Italian dishes and appetizers. We shared quite a few plates and the food was fantastic. The shopping center where it was located is really cool, too, and we’re definitely going to be back. They have a “luxury theater” (with the leather recliner chairs, cocktails/drinks and a full menu), shops, and lots of restaurants. They also have an Urban Plates, which I’ve only had once outside of Anaheim and loved.

Saturday, Livi had soccer, and then we hit up Naked Cafe for breakfast.

The breakfast tacos speak to my soul.

Gimmeeveryday

(Soy chorizo, eggs, lettuce, jalapeños, tomato, with beans and salsa)

After our feast, we met Betsy and the kiddos at the pool for a swim day.

Saturday night we grilled over here, and Sunday, we hit up the gym before the usual errand extravaganza.

Bombas and nb

My hip flexors were killing me on Saturday, so I took it super easy with a slow walk on the treadmill, wearing my maternity support belt and reading on my phone with the Oyster app. Even when some days are harder than others -usually if I’m not feeling 100% or don’t have enough time for a *full* workout- I remind myself that something is better than nothing. Back in the day, if I didn’t have all of the stars aligned in my favor, I would use it as an excuse to skip a workout. Now I take whatever I can get. 😉

Sunday night was what we’ve affectionately started calling the Harney Cobb. It’s been on the weekly rotation, and is a satisfying dinner that we all enjoy. I make Liv’s deconstructed style, and I think she likes having so many options to choose from.

Harney cobb 1 of 1

Chopped veg 1 of 1

We basically turn our kitchen into a salad bar, which is one of my dreams come true. 😉

Cobb 1 of 1 3

(romaine, turkey bacon, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, hard-boiled egg, grilled chicken and black olives + dressing of choice. I used the Bragg’s apple cider vinaigrette last night.)

This morning, I’m going to get a quick PiYo workout

Doing piyo

(I’ll post a full review of it when our challenge is finished next week!)

before Livi and I head to her yoga class. Hope you’re all enjoying the morning! See ya later today with a bomb avocado recipe.

xoxo

That is so fun that Livi goes to yoga class!!!

I couldn’t agree more with the something is better than nothing. I was feeling like a slob kabob last week because I’m not working out like I “normally” do, but then I reminded myself that my body needs this time to repair itself and that I’m doing everything I can to stay mildly active. I’m still at the gym lifting weights, swimming and going to my personal pilates classes. Most people on crutches would not be doing those.

Salad bars are one of my favorite meals!! Looking forward to that avocado recipe!

  4. Mary on August 17, 2015 at 8:12 am

Ohhhh salad bar is my favorite. getting to choose exactly what goes on my salad and how much of each thing is the best! Another reason why I love fro-yo places hahah.

Something is better than nothing!! I work to get my body moving in some way everyday…even if it is just a walk. Looks like a fun weekend (:

I totally understand about 3rd trimester, lack of motivation to workout syndrome. I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, so I feel even triple the responsibility that it’s not for me, it’s for baby. And that gets me every time. 🙂 Of course my “workouts” are easy yoga and walking… but lots of it!

My hip flexors killed me my entire 3rd trimester – you have my sympathy! You do look amazing. And that salad looks declicious – it’s now on the menu for my three year old tonight.

Those breakfast tacos look SO good!! And you’re absolutely right, something is better than nothing. I always try to keep that in mind, but some days it’s tough! 🙂

  11. Stephanie on August 17, 2015 at 10:29 am

I have been a Cobb salad kick lately too! I actually prepped a few last night for the week to take to work and eat for lunch. So good!

  12. Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood on August 17, 2015 at 10:58 am

I definitely agree in your something is better than nothing philosophy. Even if I’m just walking aorund the block, my body is happy and grateful!

  13. Tracy on August 17, 2015 at 11:40 am

Ahhh! Can’t wait for the avocado recipe! I’ve been craving them lately!

I’d love to learn more about kids yoga. I think it’d fun to teach!

    • Fitnessista on August 17, 2015 at 8:41 pm

i think it would be fun to teach, too. her study is amazing. each week they have a theme, whether it’s a story or visiting a country. all of the poses are described to go with the theme. for example, if they’re in the jungle, in warrior 2 they pretend to pick bananas. they slither like snakes in cobra, etc. it’s so cute

      • Tracy on August 18, 2015 at 9:29 am

Ahhhh! I love it!! Sounds so cute and fun 🙂

    Those breakfast tacos *drooling*

  17. Lucy on August 17, 2015 at 1:41 pm

Could you do a post about oyster? I read SO much (long train commute) I spend on Amazon Kindle what other girls spend on shoes – but I am afraid Oyster won’t have the most recent / random titles I want to read. Let’s face it, not reading war & peace pre-coffee on a train. What kind of selection do they have?

    Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on August 17, 2015 at 8:40 pm

i’m actually doing a post about it on thursday!! they have oyster unlimited, which is more of the older titles. you can also buy a copy of the new releases and pre-orders (for a one-time fee). i bought holly madison’s new book and i think it was $11? the prices are similar to kindle, but i really like that i can read it on my iPad or my phone

  18. Keri on August 17, 2015 at 2:35 pm

now I want that salad!! I’m visiting family in SD in october. so Tiki Port is the best acai bowls in your opinion? Also I’m 11 weeks pregnant and still feel yuck overall. But I just completed winter shape up workout 1 and feel lots better! I had to modify some of the jumping moves–i forgot what a killer workout it is.

    • Fitnessista on August 17, 2015 at 8:39 pm

yes, tiki port is #1 still! happy to hear you’re enjoying the workouts. hope that second trimester magic makes you feel much better!

  19. Giselle on August 17, 2015 at 3:39 pm

We LOVE salad bar dinners! It’s the best way to get Ayden to eat a wide variety of veggies. He loads his bowl up then gobbles it down. If only he would eat them when I place them on his plate…

    • Fitnessista on August 17, 2015 at 8:38 pm

haha it makes such a difference when they pick what they eat. it’s so funny

  20. Sara @ Oats and Rows on August 17, 2015 at 6:43 pm

oh my gosh those breakfast tacos *drooool*

    • Fitnessista on August 17, 2015 at 8:34 pm

      they were everyyything

  21. Bethany on August 17, 2015 at 11:30 pm

I cannot wait to hear your PiYo review! I’ve been on the fence about ordering it for months. I now just found out I am pregnant and wonder if it will be a good fit for me. I do want something too easy and I want something that will not totally bored me! It doesn’t take much these days and I am asleep!

  22. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on August 18, 2015 at 12:57 pm

What a cool tree! And that salad looks yummy!
