Welcome to the s’more side

It’s a stormy night over here- perfect for a rainy day workout, eh?

Stormy

(Thank you so much to those of you who already did the workout and left your feedback! So glad you’re loving it so far)

My friend Lisa spent the afternoon over here hanging out with Oliv and myself. Lisa is from Australia and had never had a s’more… until this afternoon.

Smore

She now knows the trifecta of foodgasms- I was so excited to show her the way.

We talked about a lot of random things, and somehow got to talking about this movie and the fact that we’re both obsessed about the Wizard of Oz:

(I can’t wait to see it!!)

I used to watch Wizard of Oz over and over when I was little (and hide from the witch), Wicked is my all-time favorite book, and I’ve blogged many times about my great love for the musical. When the Pilot told me that he saw the preview for the above movie, I had to YouTube it right away. Maybe I’ll even make it to the movie threatre for that one (I almost never go to movies since I’m now narcoleptic).

I snacked on a few of the chocolate chip cookies Lisa brought over, so was excited for a veggie-filled meal to wash it down.

Chicken zucchini

Not the most aesthetically appealing, but extremely flavorful, thanks to the leftover chicken the Pilot grilled last night. He seasoned it with a spicy meat rub and it was fantastic.

Just a little mirepoix in olive oil (I was forced to use a ton of celery since it’s towards the top of the container and I was digging down for the onion and carrot)

Chicken zucchini 3Chicken zucchini 2

with two spiralized zucchini, a leftover chicken breast, marinara, garlic, and a spoonful of chili-garlic sauce.

Hope you’re having a happy Monday and I’ll see ya in the morning with that “Save the Gym Hair” post- finally!

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: What is a food that you’ve introduced to a friend or family member? I’ll never forget when the Pilot first had almond butter. I put it in his sandwich to take to work since we were out of peanut butter and he came home and said, “We might need to throw that peanut butter out. I think it’s rancid.” Haha

Something to think:

No one should ever have to go through life without having a s’more. Glad you saved Lisa. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 13, 2012 at 11:10 pm

      i can’t!!! hahah

    • Alex @ Brain, Body, Because on August 14, 2012 at 8:20 am

I’d never heard of Tim Tam! Since I’m a vegetarian and won’t eat marshmallows, I’m on Team Tim Tam, which is also fun to say 🙂

      • Fitnessista on August 14, 2012 at 11:29 am

i don’t eat pork or beef products, so i buy vegetarian marshmallows- they have them at the health food store 🙂 the ones in the pic are vegan and gluten-free

Oooh, instructional pictures! I’m definitely doing this on Friday, so watch out for that on my bloggy. It’s perfect whether for it – rain, rain, rain, and we have a log burner inside that will just be the thing. Now, can someone PLEASE offer to finish my breastfeeding assignment for me? It’s killing me. killing me… goodbye world…

(I’m sure you remember those revolting ‘assignments due!’ weeks from college. If you ever decide to go do your MA, just read this comment and reconsider).

I have the best memories of growing up and my dad would light a fire and we would make smores and I used to have WAY too many and I would fall asleep next to the fire. We did that about once a year as firewood is hard to find in my area. So it was a special treat in the winter.

  5. lauren r. on August 13, 2012 at 11:22 pm

Loving your almond butter story…I still have not convinced my hubs to try it yet, I bet if I sneak it in he will feel the same way as your pilot, lol!!

  6. Abby on August 13, 2012 at 11:35 pm

“I just feel like I’m eating a bean sandwich” -my husband’s response to me using whole wheat tortillas to make bean burritos haha.

  7. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on August 13, 2012 at 11:38 pm

Smore’s are my love language. Also my husband thinks Almond Butter is so weird. It is not that much different from Pb!

    • Fitnessista on August 13, 2012 at 11:42 pm

it just EATS pb. that’s all. haha

  8. Casey on August 13, 2012 at 11:57 pm

That food looks amazing!! How to do spirl the zucchini? Is there a cooking tool you use?
    Thanks
    Casey

Thanks for the great quote! In the middle of a crazy few weeks of interviewing (in law school) and totally needed the encouragement- it hit home!

  10. Yaara on August 14, 2012 at 12:46 am

I also used to watch The Wizard of Oz over and over again when I was little! I loved it! And–I too am on a major zucchini noodle kick–I’m obsessed. I saute it with some onion; fresh basil; tomatoes; oregano and other spices; lemon juice and some mushrooms and balsamic vingear. I love it! It literally tastes like spaghetti.

  11. amanda on August 14, 2012 at 1:23 am

I introduced the smore to my friend, Jon last summer while camping. When he told me he had never had a smore (he’s 38!!!) I was like “what kind of childhood did you have?!” haha. seriously. who allows a child to grow up without smores?! crazy people, that’s who 🙂 thankfully, he’s now a smore pro (and we try many different chocolate variations – current fave is the dark chili chocolate bar from Theo – try it!).

  12. Hannah @ Will Move for Cake on August 14, 2012 at 4:44 am

I haven’t ever had a smore either!! They aren’t so popular in the UK, when I was little and we went camping we would just have toasted marshmallows on sticks – still yummy!!
I also thought I’d add (totally nothing to do with your post sorry) but I was introduced to the BOSU at the gym last week and I know your love for that piece of kit so I thought I’d let you know that I’m now firmly in the family of love / hate relationship with that little half sphere
I have to stand on top of the ball and do bicep curls at the moment – do you have any other ideas for improving my core with it?

  13. Kelly @ My love affair with running on August 14, 2012 at 5:08 am

I am also Australian and have tried s’mores! Will have to try change that by the sounds of it 🙂

  14. Kelli on August 14, 2012 at 6:08 am

Omg! I just Cracked up about the comment “we have to throw that p.b. out its rancid! ” I throw some random things in my husband’s lunch like fiber one bars and he’ll come home and say please no more fiber for me!

  15. Joanne @ threeunderthree on August 14, 2012 at 6:52 am

I’ve never had a smore (I’m from England) but we are having them at our bonfire/halloween party for my son’s 1st birthday. I can’t wait 🙂

I introduced my husband to almond butter in the form of my Almond Coconut Bites and he loved it. I’m not sure if he would be too bothered about it on it’s own but that suits me fine as it means there’s more for me 😉

  16. Hillary on August 14, 2012 at 7:20 am

When I was little, I would make my brother act out Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins with me (he’s three years older than me). I’m totally dragging him to see this movie!

  17. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on August 14, 2012 at 7:20 am

That dinner looks amazing! I am dying to get a spiralizer myself! I can’t wait for that oz movie! I hadn’t heard of it till now but I love the wizard of oz!

  18. Kristen on August 14, 2012 at 7:29 am

Woke up this morning at 5:30 to take care of my little guy and instead of going back to bed (which was SOOO tempting) I had a little Turbo HIIT date with Chalene followed by the rainy day workout! It’s not called that because you can do it inside when it’s raining; it’s called that because I looked like I played in the rain when I was done with all of it 🙂 Hot. Sweaty. Mess.

My hubs was always grossed out when he saw me make smoothies with spinach. I finally got him to try it and he actually admitted it was good.

  19. Anne on August 14, 2012 at 7:53 am

You have officially secured your spot in the best most charitable friends hall of fame! No one should go through life without experiencing the gloriousness that is a S’more (or 5 in one sitting :))

  20. Caitlin C on August 14, 2012 at 7:57 am

Where are the Gluten Free graham crackers from? mmmm

  21. Chelsea Anthony on August 14, 2012 at 8:20 am

Oh, how I love s’mores!!! Yum! I recently introduced steamed artichoke toy friend, Tiffany. She had eaten the jarred artichoke that people use in pasta and salads, but never a fresh one. We just steamed
It and ate the amazing goodness. I grew up eating artichokes like that since my grandma grew them in her garden!

  22. Shari on August 14, 2012 at 8:27 am

I ADORE Wicked — Defying Gravity and For Good give me chills!

Did you know Friday was National Smores Day? I was a little late and didn’t get my post up until yesterday for it but you are right on track with your Smores timing and glad Lisa got in on the action!

  25. Beks on August 14, 2012 at 9:33 am

LOVE Wizard of Oz! It was my favorite movie when I was a kid. I even have a stuffed dog named Toto, but I was never Dorothy for Halloween. Tried to buy the costume, but it looked horrible on me, so I decided I need to make my own, but have never gotten around to it. Wicked is an amazing muscial, but I didn’t care for the book at all. A bit morbid for my tastes, I suppose. I am interested in the rest of the books: Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men. Apparently there’s a fourth one out, too, Out of Oz?

  26. Courtney on August 14, 2012 at 9:59 am

The last time I went camping with friends, they made s’mores with PEANUT BUTTER CUPS! I died. PMS dream haha!!

  27. Beverly Aragon on August 14, 2012 at 10:18 am

Cauliflower! Can you believe the hubby had no idea what it was? It’s always been one of my faves and I’m proud to say that it’s now his favorite veggie.

  28. Rachel on August 14, 2012 at 10:39 am

That preview looks so good! My friend is actually terrified of that movie haha she’s so scared of the wicked witch, like it was on TV one day when she was over and she started freaking out lol

  29. Sarabell on August 14, 2012 at 11:29 am

Growing up my family basically ate American food with the occasional Americanized Mexican or Italian dish. I had to eat Thai food for a work meeting and since we’d originally been told it’d be pizza I was starving and ended up just ordering something. I’m so glad I did! I loved it like crazy and made my dad go with me for lunch one day. He made a little bit of a face at it but did go ahead and order (triple Thai hot when they’ll make it that way, for the record. He’s burned off a few of his taste buds so now he’s crazy) He and my mom now go out for Thai food once a week. =]

    • Fitnessista on August 14, 2012 at 12:37 pm

i was the same way with thai! i never wanted to try it and as soon as i did, i was hooked.

  30. Julie on August 14, 2012 at 11:39 am

Ha! I love the almond butter story! For me, I’m actually usually the one getting introduced to new foods. I used to be very picky, but my husband has really expanded my tastes. The biggest one is sushi! I LOVE it now!

    • Fitnessista on August 14, 2012 at 12:36 pm

sushi is definitely creepy if you haven’t’ tried it before- but it’s soooooo good

      • Jennifer on August 14, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I love sushi! Sounds like a fun dinner date, Sushi and S’mores!

  31. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on August 14, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Mmm s’mores! Those are a summer staple for me. I bet Lisa will be hooked now that she’s tried them. 😀

I just recently read and saw Wicked live… it was amazing!

    • Fitnessista on August 14, 2012 at 12:43 pm

      everything about it- it’s incredible

  33. Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets on August 14, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Hahah too funny! I feel like boys/men don’t understand different nut butters, of course other than peanut butter. It’s a whole new world!

  34. Julie on August 14, 2012 at 1:03 pm

I just saw that trailer for the new Oz movie this weekend, too, & freaked out! Can’t wait!! I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen Wizard of Oz when I was younger, & I’ve seen Wicked live twice now. LOVE it!

  35. Brigid on August 14, 2012 at 1:08 pm

I’m an Oz lover, too! I watched the original and “Return to Oz” over and over as a kid. I’ve also read a couple of the books, and they are fantastic.

I’ve introduced my husband to a decent amount of food, most notably Thai and Indian cuisines, which are now two of his favorites. Oh, and Brussels sprouts. He said he hated them, so I figured he’d just never had them properly roasted before. I was right. They are a fall fave in our home now.

  36. Ali on August 14, 2012 at 1:46 pm

That looks delicious! Where did you find gluten free graham crackers??

    • Fitnessista on August 14, 2012 at 10:31 pm

new life- it’s a health food store here

  37. kayla on August 14, 2012 at 5:24 pm

I introduced guacamole to my father in law, I had to BEG him to try it and promised him he’d love it.. ya, he puked. How can you not love guac? 🙁 And, call us dorks, but the hubs and I had a firepit built in our backyard simply because of our shared love for s’mores! We have them often 🙂 Also, I’ve seen Wicked 8 times.. it never gets old!

  38. Sonia the Mexigarian on August 15, 2012 at 3:07 pm

I am not a James Franco fan but I am willing to watch the movie because I love the Wizard of Oz. I LOVE it. Mostly return to Oz and I can practically sing all the numbers from Wicked. Defy Gravity is my favorite 🙂

Everytime I see a smore I think about The Sandlot where they’re making smores in the treehouse. “Want a smore?” “Some more what? How can I have more of anything when I haven’t had anything?” bahaha. “You’re killing me Smalls!”

    • Fitnessista on August 15, 2012 at 11:20 pm

haha i always think of that too!

  39. Sam @ Better With Sprinkles on August 16, 2012 at 2:50 pm

mmm, s’mores. I just went camping for a few days and i didn’t have one – not cool at all.

I just recently introduced a friend of mine to baked sweet potatoes and cinnamon – afterwards she could not stop telling people how amazing it was. 🙂

  40. Carol b on July 17, 2014 at 8:40 pm

Please tell me the brand of marshmallows and Graham crackers you used. Thanks!!
