What flavor is grey?

I’ve mad a lot of gnarly-looking smoothies in my day.

vitamixx

This one wins 😉

grey smoothie

Grey! Tasty…..

To make a grey smoothie: combo of banana, almond milk, spinach, berries, Sun Warrior, hemp seeds, almond butter and cinnamon. Despite its funky appearance, it was quick dose of nutrients and tasted fantastic.

This morning’s bfast was a little more photogenic:

breakfast8

2 eggs with salsa, brown rice tortilla, burries

I’m really trying to get in the habit of walking Bell regularly again. We were going everyday, and it’s dropped down to maybe 2-3 times a week. Sorry, Bell :/ The weather is nice, it’s easy to bring Liv with us in a wrap or the stroller- no excuses.

Yesterday, she was so happy when I asked her if she wanted to go for a walk:

walk3

While we were walking around the neighborhood, I was thinking about the importance of workout music. If I’m out walking, I don’t need music at all. I’m happy to enjoy the company of whomever I’m with (or just the thoughts racing around my brain) and don’t even think about bringing my headphones. Working out with a buddy, I can go either way. If they want to listen to music, that’s cool, or if they want to chat the whole time, even better 🙂 If I’m at the gym or outside running solo, I NEED music. I might as well forget about a workout if I forget my iPod or headphones.

If I hear a good *power* song, it’s all I need to push through the last little bit of cardio or few reps I have left.

Here are some of the songs I’m loving right now:

spring playlist

Flo Rida “Wild Ones” (ft Sia)

Bond “Allegretto”

Havana Brown “We Run the Night” (ft Pitbull)

The Killers “When You Were Young”

Glee “Stronger”

Metallica “Whiskey in the Jar” (in honor of St. Patrick’s Day)

Snow Patrol “Crack the Shutters”

Nicki Minaj “Starships”

Muse “Starlight”

Pedro & Maria “Colgando En Tus Manos” (love this for a cool down)

How important is workout music to you? Does it change for different types of workouts?

What’s the weirdest-looking thing you ate lately?

Hope you have a happy almost-Friday <3

xoxo

Gina

I actually made almost the same smoothie earlier this week, except I used chia seeds instead of hemp seeds and didn’t use cinnamon. It turned grey just like yours, haha – not exactly appetizing, but still delicious 🙂 Music is SO important when I’m working out – I’m with you, if I hear a motivating, upbeat song (especially when I’m on the treadmill) it pushes me further than I thought I could go!

  2. Racheal @ Running with Racheal on March 22, 2012 at 12:08 pm

If I am at the gym or on the treadmill, I require some type of entertainment – music, reading, movies, TV shows. BUT, if I am running outside, I could go for miles without anything besides my thoughts and nature.

My smoothies tend to be on the browner side – also not very photogenic. 🙂

  3. Helen on March 22, 2012 at 12:21 pm

I NEED music when I work out! I just can’t get motivated if I don’t have something fast on my ipod. It doesn’t matter if it’s even just taking my dog for a walk – I gotta have music! Unless, of course, I’m with someone, then talking works just as well for distracting my brain from realizing what my body’s doing.

The weirdest looking thing I’m eating today is lunch right now. I recently got into baby bell peppers. They taste like really sweet bell peppers, but they look like little jalepenos. My coworkers were confused at first – no, i’m not that hard core. 🙂

  4. Melissa on March 22, 2012 at 12:24 pm

I have been running almost completely without music for almost a year now and have found that I really enjoy being with my own thoughts. Now if I’m in the gym on the treadmill, I will plug into the TVs so that I have some sort of entertainment. There were a couple of times my headphones were not in my gym bag and those workouts were rough, I’m not gonna lie. After a particularly difficult run last night I’ve thought about adding music in again on occasion but I’m SO lazy with my iTunes.

On that note, I LOVE “When you were young” by the Killers…so good! And the video is great if you haven’t seen it. Also, the acoustic version (found on YouTube) is nice too 🙂

  5. Krista @ A Belle in DC on March 22, 2012 at 12:31 pm

I have to have music if I am doing cardio, but fortunately weights and ab work don’t bother me without music. My smoothies are pretty much always gray. When I started making them I’d use a cup that you couldn’t see through but now I don’t mind as much!

  6. Siobhan @ SiobhanMcCarthy.ca on March 22, 2012 at 12:35 pm

I NEED music to run! Wild Ones, Starships, When You Were Young, and Starlight were all in my playlists this week! I love awesome power songs!

  7. Kath on March 22, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Have you heard the new Carly Rae Jepsen song, “Call Me Maybe?” My friends and I are obsessed! It’s ridiculously poppy but equally catchy… I also love Beyonce’s “Love On Top,” Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” and Ellie Goulding’s “Lights.”

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 12:56 pm

      off to download- thanks!

  8. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on March 22, 2012 at 12:52 pm

I need music when I am working out. But, like you, I can walk and just listen to my thoughts or whoever I am walking with!

  9. Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit on March 22, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I absolutely have to have music when I work out. It makes all the difference. I definitely have power songs that get me extra pumped. Have you ever heard of Hood to Coast? It’s a running relay race in Oregon – about 200 miles (from the mountains to the coast), covered between a team of 12 people. I’m going on my 5th year and every time I have to pick the perfect power song to start out my leg. I never forget them. No matter where I am when I hear that song I always link it back to whatever route I was running during the race.

  10. Chelsea @ Chelsea's Health on March 22, 2012 at 12:56 pm

I used to think I needed music when I workout… then I discovered coffee break Spanish. Now on my daily walks or runs I practice my Spanish. When I finish this series I plan to go through the French one! Once I have gone through about 3 podcasts I turn to music as a reward for challening my mind when I walk.

I am very lazy when it comes to downloading music so I have been using Rock My Run to download music mixes. They keep me moving during tough runs or bike rides.

    • Adam @ RockMyRun.com on April 3, 2012 at 6:35 pm

Chelsea – thanks for the mention! Gina – give us a shot if you’re looking for some motivating & energizing mixes. Maybe we could even collaborate and make a mix from one of your playlists!

      • Fitnessista on April 3, 2012 at 11:24 pm

i would love to!!! thank you 🙂

  11. britt on March 22, 2012 at 1:03 pm

i’m like you…if i forget my ipod when i go out for a run, i might as well just not go. my absolute favorite song to push me to the end is the black eyed peas “pump it”. LOVE.

  12. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on March 22, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Haha, I’ve made some really gross looking smoothies before, but they always taste so good! Music can definitely make or break my workout. Some heart pumping tunes always get me going! I need some new music… my friend made me a mix that I’m super excited about, I just haven’t gotten it from her yet!

  13. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on March 22, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Ooh I’ll definitely have to check out the Glee version of Stronger! I have to admit, I haven’t been a loyal Gleek at all for season 3! Like you, I don’t need music when I’m out for a walk, and if I’m outside running, sometimes I like to just listen to what’s around me as well. But if it’s on the treadmill, or a long outdoor run, I need tunes!! Right now some of my faves are the Joe Maz remix of Rumour Has It by Adele, and Carrie Underwood’s Good Girl.

  14. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on March 22, 2012 at 1:09 pm

I used to absolutely have to have music when I ran. I cringed at the thought of not having tunes to keep me going. Lately, I’ve been running without music, even for double digit runs, and I’ve been okay. Not sure what changed, but I do still like to have something to listen to occasionally.

  15. kaila @ healthyhelper on March 22, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Definitely have made a grey smoothie before LOL! I thinks its the combo of berries and spinach!

I am the same way with workouts…I NEED MUSIC! Or TV if I am at the gym…otherwise it feels like an eternity and I don’t enjoy myself. Listening to my heavy breathing is not very helpful during a tough workout !

  16. Erin on March 22, 2012 at 1:22 pm

my 2 go-to songs right now are princess of china – coldplay ft rhianna, and shake it out – florence and the machine. oh man the chorus/bridge/or whatever of that one just gets me going during cardio! “its hard to dance with the devil on your back, so shake him off” – haha my stupid running demons saying i can’t do it!

  17. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on March 22, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Oh I am all too familiar with the grey smoothie! They always taste delicious but they certainly look funky! Your fresh strawberries however, look great! I need to pick up a carton! And thanks for the great playlist- can’t wait to download those songs! I have to have music if I’m doing any sort of cardio- without it I just feel like I have no motivation to push through!

  18. Carrie @ Lift Eat Repeat on March 22, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Music can sometimes take me out of the element when in the gym. If for some reason I go for a run outside (this is pretty rare) I like to hear my feet against the pavement and clear my head!

So this wasn’t the wierdest looking meal, but last night I had tuna with celery and homemade granola on the side—wierd combo I know!

  19. Clare @ Fitting It All In on March 22, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Music is really important to my while running – a faster pace song definitely helps me run faster, but just ANY song I’m dying to hear keeps me going. I don’t need it as much if I have a magazine on the elliptical or during walks.

As for the food, my smoothies have been funky lately too! Blueberries make my purply and speckled. 🙂

  20. Aylin @ Glow Kitchen on March 22, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I am EXACTLY like you in that I cannot move a muscle without my music. I have a panic attack when I reach the gym and realize that my iPad has run out of batteries. I simply turn around and go home. Nothing gets me moving like some hardcore gangsta rap…certainly not silence.

  21. Emilie @ Emilie's Enjoyables on March 22, 2012 at 1:58 pm

100% agree with your needs for music. I never need it walking but if I’m running-I’m totally useless without it.

  22. Gianna on March 22, 2012 at 2:28 pm

I am running a half marathon Saturday so lately, my eats have been pretty boring in general so to not mess with my stomach.

For me, music is EVERYTHING in a workout. I can feel completely ready to conk out running and then a great song comes on and I get energy x1000 and it revamps my run. In a taper week I accidentally ran two 8 milers because of that! Hence why for my half’s I place music strategically through. “Wild Ones” makes about 3 appearances on my list! Also loving Jessie J “Domino” Carly Rae Jepsen “Call Me Maybe” Flo Rida “Good Feeling” Jessie J ft David Guetta “LaserLight” Pitbull “International Love” and of course some Avicii “Seek Bromance” to name a few 🙂

  23. Roselyn @ A Balanced Fit on March 22, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Music is very, very important for my workouts! But I guess that makes sense, since I’m a spin instructor. 🙂 Right now, I’m in love with Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe. So fun and cute and makes me feel young again. 😉

  24. mary on March 22, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Most of my smoothies are gray/green/brown. Spinach and berries= great combo, nutritionally and taste-wise! Color, not so much!

I heard this on the radio yesterday and am digging it. “We Are Young” by Fun.

      I LOVE that song 🙂

  25. Juju@getfitwithjuju on March 22, 2012 at 2:34 pm

I totally need music when I workout. I haven’t used my ipod for awhile though. I use my pandora on my phone and listen to the station ” Dance Pop Hits”. Always keeps me moving! 🙂
Btw, I’m a newbie to your blog! xoxo

  26. Hillary on March 22, 2012 at 2:45 pm

So I ran my first half marathon without my iPod. Big, big mistake. This past Saturday, I ran my second half marathon (with my iPod!), and I swear it made all the difference in the world!

  27. Jessica@Fruit and Veggie Tales on March 22, 2012 at 2:47 pm

I love the way you have your straps twisted in the pic of you wearing Liv in the Moby…..I loooooove my sleepy wrap (like the moby but stretchy) for wearing the babies but different strap twisting and such could come in handy and I’ve never thought of that before! More arm moveability is always a good thing. Do you have a website you like for methods of tying?

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Thank you! I just watch YouTube videos for ways to tie it

  28. Hallie on March 22, 2012 at 3:24 pm

I am a few years away from mommyhood but I think about it a lot 🙂 Are you ever nervous walking your pup with your baby? Or what about when you were pregnant? My dog is a fair bit larger than yours…she’s 54 lbs so probably closer to the other doggie you had, but I’d be worried about being on a walk with the dog and baby and the dog lunging for another dog or a bird or whatever, and me either being pulled, or instinctively dropping the leash to protect the baby, or…? Also when you’re pregnant, is it tough to bend down to pick up after the dog? AND (see, I’ve thought about this a bunch) my heart races when another dog is nearby because my dog’s so jumpy and I can’t imagine that’s super great for the baby.

  29. Lauren @ Vaguely Vegan on March 22, 2012 at 3:30 pm

What a cute pic of you with the baby all wrapped up and the dog! Does the wrap get really hot? I’m on the same boat with you as far as music goes for a workout. Walking is so relaxing so I don’t mind if I’m not plugged in but if I’m at the gym on a machine I absolutely NEED music, or at least headphones to plug into some bad reality television. There have been a few times when I forgot my headphones or ipod at home and call it quits early…it’s just not the same.

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 4:22 pm

it does get warm in the moby. in the summer, i’ll definitely be using something lighter

      • Shaina on March 22, 2012 at 6:31 pm

I just picked up the k’tan mesh version since our baby is coming in June. Perfect for summer!

  30. Jennie on March 22, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Once I actually left the gym when I realized I had forgotten my ipod. I tried to run, and I just couldn’t get into a rhythm. It was embarrassing, ha ha.

Now I mainly do Jillian Michaels videos, and I find I don’t need music, just the lovely sound of her screaming at me! 😉

  31. Amanda on March 22, 2012 at 3:53 pm

I LOVE posts like this. I don’t listen to the radio (live in NYC, no car!) and all the streaming sites are blocked at work. So I gotta dig deep for music ideas – thank you!

  32. Becca on March 22, 2012 at 4:03 pm

I will be the first to admit that I have left the gym after realizing I didn’t have my iPod. Horrible excuse but I am like you and really need music. I feel like I push myself harder and workout for longer when I have great songs with good beats.
I also feel as though I work harder in group classes when the instructor has a good playlist. I remember taking a spin class and the instructor wanted us to sprint and do jumps with really slow boring music.. It did not work at all 🙂

  33. Bee @ thebusybeewrites on March 22, 2012 at 5:18 pm

I bought a bag of potatoes from TJ’s that included purple potatoes. I ended up making grey mashed potatoes. Still tasted great, of course. Just looked dirty. And not the “threw in a few sweet potatoes, so I call them” dirty.

I cannot work out without good music. I’m so picky that I switch up my play list constantly. I am currently LOVING Chris Brown’s “Turn Up the Music,” despite my uncomfortableness with supporting Breezy himself. And, I rearrange my life for a particular zumba instructor, who may be a kindred music soul.

Thanks for the fun post! Loved the music suggestions!!

  34. Steph @ Upbeat Eats on March 22, 2012 at 6:49 pm

Weirdly, I HAVE to have music for cardio, but sometimes actually prefer none when I’m lifting in the weight room! I think I like to be aware of my surroundings since people might say something, etc. My favorite pump up song right now is Rihanna’s “Watch n learn” … Gets my foot a-tappin’ 😉

    • Rebecca on March 23, 2012 at 8:53 am

I’m the same way…Have to have my ipod for cardio, but but when it comes to using the weights I just don’t. I will at times not use my ipod on the tread mill tho if my husband is with me since we tend to talk and try to challenge each other to a “race”.

  35. Allison on March 22, 2012 at 7:29 pm

i definitely love having music when working out, especially indoors! outside if i’m running or biking, theres a lot more to look at so im usually okay with the silence and scenery.

  36. chrissy on March 22, 2012 at 7:30 pm

I NEED MUSIC. it’s like hair-tie or socks, you know? that’s one of the reasons I love Zumba so much!

  37. Sara on March 22, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Music is sooo important to my workout and my day in general. I tend to go for pumping music in the morning and it gets quieter as the day progresses.

Whenever I add spinach to a smoothie, it turns into something un-blogworthy. Colours range from mauve to khaki to plain old grey. Still tastes ok though. 😀

  38. Meggan on March 22, 2012 at 8:43 pm

My running playlist is as essential to me as my running shoes! Justin Timberlake, The Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, and Cee Lo Green are great for that extra get-up-and-go.

    I’m jealous of your smoothie!

  39. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on March 22, 2012 at 9:03 pm

I need music for running outdoors too! I tried running without it once and it was kind of refreshing for the first 5 minutes, but then I just got bored. 😛

  40. Kate @ get up and flow on March 22, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Oh man, I have made many a sketchy-looking smoothie. But who cares, as long as they taste good? I think I’ve probably scared my husband away from them forever, though — he calls them “sludge.” : )

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 11:53 pm

once i put spirulina in the pilot’s smoothie and he told me i crossed the line 😉

  41. Lisa on March 23, 2012 at 7:52 am

Love your workout playlist! : ) My favorites are Life House – First Time, Kelly Clarkson – Stronger, Jessie J – Domino, Destiny’s Child – Survivor, and strangely enough Linkin Park – Papercut. Have a wonderful Friday!

  42. Jessica on March 23, 2012 at 9:15 am

Thanks for posting this!!! Music is absolutely crucial to my workout. I can’t listen to anything too slow. “Wild Ones” Is my current workout fave! I also love “Plug in Baby” by Muse, “Standing in the Way of Control” by The Gossip”, “Pump It” by the Black Eyed Peas and “Wolf Like Me” by TV on the Radio.

  43. Caroline H. on March 23, 2012 at 9:23 am

I have really started to appreciate music during Power Yoga. When I first started going to this studio I was not a fan. Cause you know, yoga is supposed be ‘zen and lavender’. But then I started Power Vinayasa classes…And music is essential! I really enjoy Coldplay’s “Paradise”, Gotye’s “Somebody that I used to Know”, and Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold”. We also do ab work to 50 Cent’s “In Da Club”…it hurts so good 🙂

  44. Caroline @ After Dinner Dance on March 23, 2012 at 9:37 am

I’m exactly the same – walking I’m fine in peace and quiet, but I simply cannot run without music. Weird!

Sill Q, but what are hemp seeds? What are their nutritional benefits?!

I really enjoy listening to Pandora when I work out, especially the “Today’s Hits” station 🙂 Flo Rida “Wild Ones” is currently one of my fave songs!

      love pandora, too!
they’re a great source of protein and healthy fat. they have a mild nutty flavor and are really great on oats, yogurt, salad or in smoothies
