Working out at home

Hiiii 🙂 How’s your day going?

We got to see the Wildcats KILL IT last night.

Us at game

(Wearing my glasses since I got eyelash extensions! Fashion post coming with all the deets)

My favorite part of the games -ok, besides the dunks and watching my favorite band member shake it– is the crowd. The McKale crowd is out of control- we spend most of the game jumping around and screaming. Usually, I don’t have a voice the next day 😉 For our tickets, we switched our seats around a little this year, and last night we sat next to two really awesome guys. They were cracking jokes with us, and we shared our kettle corn with them. Nothing like new basketball friendship, haha. We also sat a few rows behind two guys dressed as bananas, who had the sweetest dance moves. I could see how wearing a banana suit would make you want to dance a certain way, and it was legendary.

Catsgame

Today’s my day off from the gym, so I took Bell for a little walk this morning while Liv was sleeping and the Pilot was getting ready for work. While I already miss my normal teaching schedule -teaching Soli Beat the other night was soso fun- it has been a nice break to work out on my own terms.

Walk w bell

I was overtraining with my teaching schedule and racing schedule (which was foiled. MRI is this week, finally) and my body is exhaling a sigh of relief. I applied to get on the sub list for a couple of gyms until the new year, when I’ll have my own Zumba classes, but for now, I’m just doing my thing.

Lately, I’ve been getting in some great garage workouts:

Home gym 1 of 1

A little tour of  home gym:

physioball, two dumbbells (12 lbs. each; I’d like to get a set of 7s and 15s), a 35 lb kettlebell (for combos and swings), Goldie (my spin bike), and the pull-up bar.

Pullup bar 1 of 1 2

I’ve been doing mostly bodyweight exercises, in addition to spinning and strength. While I have all the tools I need, motivation is the trickiest part. It’s tougher to work out at home, especially when I look around and see other things that need to be done (aka womp womp chores), but when I make it happen, I can get in a great workout. I’m also thankful that I have some CrossFit cards and yoga passes left, too.

Where do you usually work out? At the gym, home, outdoors, with a friend? Any piece of workout equipment you’d love to have?? I’d go crazy for a water rower.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

xoxo

Gina

Oh man. I really want my own bosu one day. Well I really want a treadmill and spin bike but bosu seems more achievable. 🙂

  2. Erin @ GoBananasBlog on November 20, 2013 at 6:21 am

Probably once of the new fancy Garmins. Or maybe an elliptical? Too many choices!

  3. Sara on November 20, 2013 at 6:22 am

I think kettebells would be a great addition to our home gym!

  4. Molly on November 20, 2013 at 6:23 am

It’s BIG, wishful thinking but I’d love to have an elliptical at home! Some day…

  5. Lindsey on November 20, 2013 at 6:25 am

I really want a physio ball and a foam roller… Mostly so I can learn how to use them properly in the privacy of my home before going public with them, hah!

  6. Monica on November 20, 2013 at 6:26 am

I work out at the gym for cardio and at home for everything else. I’ve wanted a heart rate monitor for awhile, but I can’t decide which one I want!

  7. Alexandra on November 20, 2013 at 6:29 am

I would LOVE a treadmill at home but I know that’s a dream item…on a more reasonable scale I’d love some kettle bells or a garmin for my runs! I’ve been working out at home a lot more and am really loving it!! Just got soli beat last week and it is fabulous!!!

  8. Maggie on November 20, 2013 at 7:12 am

I usually do work out videos at home, swim at the gym, or run outside (sometimes on the dreadmill at the gym).

To be honest, I would love a treadmill at home. When I’m at the gym, I have wi-fi access so I will put on Netflix and watch an episode or two of The Walking Dead and use the treadmill as my training for the zombie apocalypse.

    • kimberly on November 20, 2013 at 4:49 pm

Have you ever heard of the app called “Zombies, Run!” ? Its this app based around a zombie apocalypse and you run with it and it has zombies chasing you to make you run faster. You get to go on all kinds of missions and collect things. Its quite awesome

  9. Kristen on November 20, 2013 at 7:23 am

I would love an elliptical at home! Or just some simple weights. I think having something that would motivate me staring me in the eye every day might just do the trick 🙂

  10. Haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine on November 20, 2013 at 7:28 am

I would love to have more fitness DVDs. They make workouts at home so much easier than trying to do workouts on your own 🙂

  11. Courtney Tucker on November 20, 2013 at 7:32 am

I’m probably just lazy, but I find it almost impossible to work out at home. It reminds me of those eCards with the mom in the bathroom and that’s when the kids always need her. It just once I start, that’s when the kids find something they need me for that absolutely cannot wait. Ugh! Good for you making it happen!

  12. Teri on November 20, 2013 at 7:38 am

I usually run outside and work out at the gym. I am hoping that I get a Garmin Foreunner with HRM or a Polar HRM this Christmas 🙂

  13. Karen on November 20, 2013 at 7:43 am

I have been thinking lately that it would be really cool to have a FitBit. I have some struggles with emotional eating and times of being too sedentary, and I think this type of gadget could be a helpful, objective tool in my efforts to overcome these challenges. By the way, I’ve been following your blog for ages, Gina, but don’t comment much…thanks for all the great tips & inspiration!

  14. Lauren Alysse on November 20, 2013 at 7:46 am

A spin bike – like Goldie!

  15. Sarah on November 20, 2013 at 7:47 am

I would looooove to have my own treadmill at home!

  16. Katie D. on November 20, 2013 at 7:56 am

This is so helpful! I just had to cancel my gym membership and my home equipment is super sparse! All I have are 5lb dumb bells! I have heavier ones, a kettlebell and a weighted medicine ball on my Christmas list though. Motivation is so tough! Last night I did a 10 min HIIT workout from Tina (carrotsncake) and I was proud of myself 🙂

DVDs help me the most – so Soli Beat is also on my Christmas List as a good cardio DVD 🙂

  17. Sarah S on November 20, 2013 at 8:07 am

Motivation is the hardest part for me! (Especially in a tiny dorm room….it’s tough but I can make it happen!) I would love to have a FitBit to keep me more accountable.

  18. Dominique @ That's What Domi Said on November 20, 2013 at 8:20 am

I work out at home now that I left my job at the gym to work for my alma mater. Good thing we have a great home gym with tons of weights, oly bar, trap bar, squat rack, etc! I’d love a Swiss ball, though…and a treadmill (so that I could make some kind of treadmill desk for my work-from-home days!)..

  19. Cara H. on November 20, 2013 at 8:32 am

I work out at a local gym once or twice a week. The rest of the time I work out at home. I would love to add some more weights (15-20 lbs) and different sizes of kettlebells to my home gym.

  20. Erin D. on November 20, 2013 at 8:33 am

I would love a piece of low impact cardio equipment at home, like a bike or elliptical. We can dream!

  21. Erin W on November 20, 2013 at 8:42 am

I’d love a jawbone up or a fitbit!

  22. Tammy C on November 20, 2013 at 8:44 am

I have been wanting a fitbit. I think it would be awesome to track everything…calories burned, steps taken, and even my sleep pattern.

  23. Kyra on November 20, 2013 at 8:46 am

My realistic fitness item that I would like to have is a Polartec. My slightly bigger dream to have my own treadmill! Its the only thing missing from my at-home gym.

  24. Megan K on November 20, 2013 at 8:48 am

I’d love to have a foam roller! So simple, I just need to go buy one 🙂 My bigger wish would be a treadmill!

  25. Theresa on November 20, 2013 at 8:51 am

I would love the new Fitbit! It would help keep me in check. So far I lost 30 pounds and I would like to lose at least 10 more pounds. I work in an office so I’m always sitting so it will help me to become more active by walking around the building and such.

  26. Cassie Vaughn on November 20, 2013 at 9:00 am

I work out at home. I have access to a gym (at my apartment complex) but I just prefer to do my cardio outside and do my yoga in my living room. 🙂 All I need are running shoes and some weights. I’ve had other pieces of equipment (balance balls, medicine balls, jump rope) but I just don’t use them very often.

  27. Jamie on November 20, 2013 at 9:35 am

I actually have a pretty decent set-up at home as far as weights and different training videos are concerned, but I would LOVE to have a garmin so I can track my runs better.

  28. Michelle on November 20, 2013 at 9:43 am

I would love to have an arc trainer at home, but that’ll probably never happen. More realistically – I’d like to get a bosu. I’d also love to get the turbo fire DVDs to “kick” start my at home workouts.

  29. Amelia on November 20, 2013 at 9:43 am

Thanks for sharing your home gym, it has everything I think I would like. Right now, we live in small apartment and so I only have: a yoga mat, to 8 lb. dumbbells, and a foam roller, and a handful of great workout DVDs that make me sweat (including Soli Beat-love it and the music is very energizing). I am wanting to start tracking my calorie burn and HR so I really am wanting a Polar HR monitor so badly!

  30. Amanda on November 20, 2013 at 9:46 am

I’m just not an at home workout kind of girl. I love the buzz in a gym, and variety keeps it fun for me, so more/new/different equipment is exciting. That said, when I have kids, I know I’ll need some kind of at home option, or a workout may never happen! I typically just stick to DVDs (usually Insanity) if the gym is closed or something, but otherwise I’m a gym all the way girl.

    • Fitnessista on November 20, 2013 at 1:40 pm

i prefer the gym too, but home works in a pinch, especially when you have a little one

  31. Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit on November 20, 2013 at 9:48 am

I mix it up between a gym, the fitness center at work (such a perk), and at home using free weights and circuits or DVDs (Insanity, TurboFire, etc.). I’d love to have more dumb bells (I have 5s, 8s and 10s) but I’m getting stronger and would like 15-30, too!! I’d also love a KB for swings and squats! I hope to one day have a home gym. 🙂

  32. Max on November 20, 2013 at 10:04 am

I can only work out at home. a) because I have baby twins and no one ever wants to babysit them because they are so ROWDY and b) because having to get up and leave the house just kills my motivation.

I have a whole set up in my basement, but more often than not I just rock out in my bedroom. Over the years I’ve built up a pretty good collection of equipment (including my newest baby, the Empower Portable Pilates Studio – LOVE it) but I would love to add a kettlebell or two….I just haven’t ever worked out with one so I have no idea what weight to choose!

  33. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on November 20, 2013 at 10:54 am

I am so curious about eyelash extensions! I can’t wait for that post!

  34. Alisha @ Alisha's Appetite on November 20, 2013 at 11:26 am

I like working out at home more in the colder months when I don’t want to brave the weather outside. I’d kill for a home gym like yours!

  35. Taylor @ Singletrackedmind on November 20, 2013 at 11:44 am

It is definitely tougher mentally to work out at home, but it looks like you have a great set up!

  36. mary on November 20, 2013 at 12:15 pm

Did you quit the resort job?

I have a water rower. I’m selling it to a friend. I like it but with a desk job, I need to get OFF my butt, not on it more. It’s the Costco.com one. You should get yourself one!

    • Fitnessista on November 20, 2013 at 1:01 pm

i did. i have another project i need to finish by march, so i couldn’t work the hours i was working and finish the project by then. it’s a bummer- i wish i could do everything, haha
i’ll check it out- thank you!

  37. Debbie on November 20, 2013 at 12:30 pm

My husband actually joined the Air Force last March and left for Texas for 8 months (he is finally coming home on Sunday!)…anyway…since I could not go out running anymore or get to the gym much with two kids, I bought a punching bag, gloves, jumprope and set it up in my garage. I have a 3 and 5 yr old so when they would go out to play in the driveway, I would get in a killer workout in my garage..it was nice over the summer when I could leave the garage door open. I would mix it up with runs around the house, burpees, jumping jacks…and the kids would join in!

  38. The Delicate Place (@misathemeb) on November 20, 2013 at 12:42 pm

these days i’m working out at home, saving that $ for a HUGE two week trip we are taking at the beginning of the year. it’s to two countries i’ve always wanted to see but i can’t spill just yet! i put in my time off at work and it’s kind of a surprise for a friend of ours getting married in one of the countries. all i will say is that it’s 20+ hrs by plane away haha.i love eyelashes! they make such a huge difference: http://thedelicateplace.com/2013/05/26/false-advertising/ tried them earlier this summer and love em.

  39. Ashley @ Power, Love, and Self Discipline on November 20, 2013 at 1:13 pm

I love working out at home. I feel like I have nearly every fitness toy out there, except TRX and the ab roller (which I’d love). But the funny thing is when it comes time to workout I usually turn to bodyweight exercises. Or db’s/kettlebells.

  40. Livi on November 20, 2013 at 1:52 pm

I usually work out in the gym, but love to get my sweat on with friends!

  41. Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment on November 20, 2013 at 2:33 pm

I would really like to have an elliptical or another piece of cardio equipment at home. Would make it so easy to sneak in a little cardio in the AM! I have a stability ball, weights, kettlebells and a foam roll which are all really helpful. Especially on bad weather days when you’re stuck at home.

  42. Gianna @ Run, Lift, Repeat on November 20, 2013 at 4:36 pm

I run outside but also have an NYSC membership and often take Flywheel classes. Fitness is my splurge! I wish I had a treadmill though it is getting harder and harder to get out of bed in the cold and run!

  43. Kelly on November 21, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Gym! I need the motivation and push to keep going. I specifically like the classes, but will go walk on the treadmill if I need to. I’m still not good with free weights on my own, so I take a strength class. I’m reallizing how much I like it, so hopefully can learn to free weight on my own. I have a couple fo weights at home but don’t do them much.

  44. Theresa on November 21, 2013 at 7:23 pm

I always work out at home. With the hours I work + a long commute, I savor the time at home and don’t want to spend any more minutes in the car driving to a gym! I do TurboFire and Pure Barre DVDs most of the time, but sometimes I’ll mix it up by running around the neighborhood. I also have a resistance band, 2 kettle bells ( 10 & 12 lbs), and a 3 lb weighted ball for PB. I’ve recently started doing yoga videos at http://www.doyogawithme.com which I love! I feel like I have endless opportunities for cardio, strength, and zen without ever getting bored.

  45. Brianna K. @ Hungry Gator Gal on November 25, 2013 at 11:57 pm

I’m fortunate to have access to phenomenal facilities and group fitness classes as a student at the University of Florida. I typically attend 3 classes per week and use top-of-the-line equipment at the gyms while working out on my own. Just check out the plethora of classes available!

    recsports.ufl.edu/fitness/group-fitness/class-schedule/

  46. Wanda Einfeldt on November 30, 2013 at 3:52 pm

Most of the time I work out in my home gym, aka living room with dvds. When the weather permits, I will walk on our gravel road (I live out in rural area). I did have a trampoline that I would jump on from time to time for variety, but a windstorm blew it apart and into the cornfield! So I think if I could have another piece of equipment, that would be it…it works really well to get my heartbeat up – and it’s FUN!
