Workout to hangout

{This post was sponsored by Old Navy. Sponsored posts are a rarity around here, but I’m always happy to spread the word about products I love. The full disclaimer is at the end, but wanted to add a note to the top if you’d like to skip it. xoxo}

I’ve been trying to make an effort to wear more “real” clothes, since most of my life is spent in athletic tops and black stretchy pants. At the same time, I’m a huge fan of workout clothes that I can easily wear in everyday life by dressing up or just lounging around the house.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite workout gear that you may also see me wearing out and about:

1) The Express Yourself lululemon wrap

This flow-y sweater (pictured above, but I have it in grey) is perfect before and after yoga, but I also love it with a tank and jeans. It was also a staple during my pregnancy, since it was easy to tie under my growing belly.

2) Wunder unders

Old navy 1 of 1

These are my favorite dress-up or dress down pants, especially since the fabric is SUPER thick and comfy. (I’ve heard that the new wonder unders have thinner fabric- all of my pairs are at least a year old- so if you’re purchasing, make sure to do the bend-over test. You’re welcome haha.)

3) Lightweight jackets and zip-ups

Old navy jacket 1 of 1

The above jacket was $25 (purchased with the gift card Old Navy sent) and I’ve been using it as intended for the past few days: to hang out.

Thumb holes1

I especially love that it has thumbholes (necessary) but wish the cuffs could fold over my hands, like many of my lulu jackets. But, for the price, I’m not complaining (I could get 4 of these for the cost of one lulu jacket; the ultimate test will see how long this lasts with lots of wearings and washings). I’ve been wearing it with leggings and TOMs for errands and around the house- especially love the flattering fit and warm material.

4) Shelf bra tanks. These are amazing layered under a sweater or tank. I also love the built-in bra capabilities since I loathe underwire.

You can find these at pretty much any athletic store. Look for thin straps and lined cups for an even better option.

5) Athletic socks. I almost always wear athletic socks with boots (unless I’m rocking tights). No one knows, and my feet thank me.

Are there any “workout” clothes you love to wear for non-workouts?

I’m excited to hear about your favorites. The Old Navy up to 40% off Active line sale ends tomorrow if you’ve been wanting to check it out! You can read the rest of the review here.

you wear clothes that *aren’t* designed for working out?! I don’t haha. I even squeek the wunder unders into church on Sundays with a nice sweater and boots. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 15, 2013 at 10:39 pm

every blue moon, yes, you can find me without a single piece of luon on my body. haha

I wear my Zella pants (kind of like wunder unders) all the time for working out and just as normal pants. They are so comfy and go with everything. I also love wearing Gap sports bras with regular clothing if I want to look like I’m wearing a tank underneath but don’t want an actual shirt over my torso.

  3. Tara on January 15, 2013 at 10:42 pm

I love Wonder Unders! The crops rock my socks. My co-worker and I were just singing their praises last week. 🙂

  4. Jessica @ Prayers and Apples on January 15, 2013 at 11:10 pm

I love any top with thumbholes! I’m horrible about wearing the same workout pants/shorts, so I try to spice things up with cuter tops 🙂

After seeing your original post I went to Old Navy and ended up with 3 compression capris and 3 of the tanks(they defnitely made their money back off me;) I couldn’t resist for the fabric quality (they pass the squat test) the price, and the flattering cut since I’m still a bigger girl. The retro violet capris are my favorite item in my entire workout wear collection for all of those reasons, I’m already debating if I should just go get every color…..

    • Fitnessista on January 16, 2013 at 12:03 am

i’m so glad you like them! the tank and capris are pretty incredible- i’m wearing them to teach for the first time tomorrow 🙂

I live in Vancouver, BC (Lulu HQ 😉 ) and I looooove my Scuba Hoodie! I’m literally wearing it year-round as either sweater or jacket (with a rain jacket on top, if needed).
I also have a bunch of Lulu pants, but they started pilling and losing their shape recently, which is a little disappointing for the price. One of my plans for this year actually is to start wearing “normal” clothes again, because I really can’t use my son as an excuse anymore (he’s 16 months…). 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 16, 2013 at 12:03 am

hahah that’s me too. i’m trying to make more of an effort, but workout clothes are so comfy 😉

  7. Christine @ BookishlyB on January 15, 2013 at 11:56 pm

I love wearing my yoga capris around the house but I’ve stopped wearing them to run errands because inevitably I’ll always run into someone I know. “Oh, did you just go to yoga?” “Ummm… yeah! Sure, of course.” 😉

  8. Gaye on January 16, 2013 at 12:02 am

I live in my workout clothes. I know Stacey and Clinton at What Not to Wear wouldn’t approve, but I run around town in my gear all the time. I love the Old Navy jacket you’re rocking above. We used to have a store in our town but it closed. 🙁 If anyone from Old Navy is reading your comments, allow me this opportunity to say, “Come back to Williamsburg!”

I tried on 10 things at Old Navy after your last post and only found 1 to buy. They were all super tight (like past ‘compression gear tight’) in ‘large’, and no, I’m not going to buy anything in XL, I’ve never worn XL in any brand. Weird thing is the one yoga pant I bought is a ‘large’ but it’s almost too loose. But they were $12 so I bought two pair.

I pretty much live in activewear.

    • Fitnessista on January 16, 2013 at 12:25 am

hmm, i’ll have to try more styles next time i go in! i only tried two styles of pants, so i’m not sure how the others compare.
it’s always nice to hear i’m not the only one who lives in gym clothes 😉

  10. Ali on January 16, 2013 at 12:37 am

I’ve been really disappointed with the quality of the lulu wunder unders lately.
When I was in the states I bought some zella leggings from Nordstrom and was so happy they easily pass the bend over test! They are my new fave… No easy feat considering I’m a group fitness instructor who used to wear almost exclusively lululemon!

  11. Michelle on January 16, 2013 at 1:31 am

Love….love…love Nike Drifit running tops with thumb holes. They are so soft and cozy. I keep adding to my collection and usually add them into my weekend wardrobe. I also am a huge fan of lulu run swiftly tops and have been using them as base layers this winter in and out of the gym.

  12. Lucie on January 16, 2013 at 2:40 am

I LOVE thumbholes!!! I only buy zip ups which include them. And yours is so pretty!! If I wouldn’t have to work in an office I would be in workout clothes all day 🙂

  13. Bek @ Crave on January 16, 2013 at 2:44 am

I don’t think you can ever have enough workout gear! Only problem is that some of mine is a bit ‘out there’ colour wise since I like be bold, especially when I teach. It’s probably more suited to the gym then doing errands. Hmm, maybe I need to do a workout clothes shop again soon? Oh lordy.

  14. Ksenija @ Health Ninja on January 16, 2013 at 4:57 am

This jacket looks so unbelievably comfortable. I would love to have on with thumbholes. Sadly we do have neiter lululemon nor old navy here in Germany. Guess I have to browse amazon for something similar.

  15. Katie on January 16, 2013 at 7:01 am

All I got to say is LULULEMON WUNDER UNDERS! Miracle those pants and crops are! 🙂

  16. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on January 16, 2013 at 7:36 am

I wear my Lululemon pants and sweaters to class all the time – gotta love being a student. 😀

  17. Chele on January 16, 2013 at 8:19 am

Ooh….I love your Wunder Under outfit!! I have that same dress from Old Navy. I might just have to copy your look 😉

Thumbholes may just be the best thing ever created!!!

  18. Danielle on January 16, 2013 at 8:19 am

I love lululemon wunder unders! Perfection in a pant!!! BTW I love the black and white striped dress you have paired with the wunder unders. I know it’s not workout clothes but where is it from??

    • LisaG on January 16, 2013 at 9:13 am

Pretty sure she got it at Old Navy too! Very cute!

  19. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on January 16, 2013 at 8:45 am

I’m mildly obsessed with wearing spandex as pants right now! I’ve been purchasing some longer flowy shirts to compliment the look. It’s just SO comfy 🙂

  20. Sara @ fitcupcaker on January 16, 2013 at 8:45 am

I wear my workout clothes everywhere! No time to go home and change and dirty up another outfit! I wear my yoga pants alllll the tim!

  21. Kristen on January 16, 2013 at 8:45 am

I am a lulu lover 4L, but I actually like the Zella leggings from Nordstrom better. They are thick and soooo comfy and half the price. They hold up great, too. I run in them when it’s cold and wear them to relax or run errands, too.

  22. Rebecca@Runningfoodbaby on January 16, 2013 at 9:02 am

So I looked at the Old Navy website to see some of the clothes – stupid Canadian Old Navy has zero of the really nice stuff that you picked out. Canada Fail again…..

Most of my workout wear is only worn for working out or at home. I do tend to live in my school’s sweatpants or yoga pants on weekends 🙂 I do have one nice hoodie that if I wear it with jeans it looks fine. No thumbholes though…Nooooooooo

  23. Kim on January 16, 2013 at 9:03 am

What I really love is the black and white dress – where is that from?
I do the athletic socks with my boots, too – especially if I’m wearing leggings!!!

  24. Chelsa on January 16, 2013 at 10:26 am

I wear groove pants or wunder unders to run errands in the winter months because jeans just don’t seem appealing unless I’m going somewhere that requires more effort.

  25. Cait @ Chicago Girl Fitness on January 16, 2013 at 10:30 am

I pretty much live in Wunder Unders on the weekends. I wear my crops to the gym, then the pants version as leggings. They have paid for themselves tenfold.

  26. Rhiannon on January 16, 2013 at 10:39 am

Thumbmmies!! That’s what I like to call ’em =) I love them in a shirt or jacket.
I’m really starting to wear my yoga pants and leggings more for running errands and lounging. This may have been in a previous post and if so, I apologize. I was just wondering if there was any certain brand/style of undergarment you wear with them to avoid lines?

  27. Carley@OptimisticHealth on January 16, 2013 at 10:39 am

Those are all cute! I’ve gotten more into the wearing workout clothes throughout the day. I wear black stretchy pants often at home!

  28. Joanne @ A Nicer Choice on January 16, 2013 at 11:23 am

The lululemon wrap is just my style, I love it!

I usually wear some yoga pants from Matalan (in the UK). They cost me £8 so I expected the quality to be rubbish but it’s fine. I wear them nearly every day as they’re great if I’m turning the school run into a workout.

I like that they wash and dry so quickly as they rarely last past a single wearing without getting covered in baby food 🙂

  29. Amanda @ Sistas of Strength on January 16, 2013 at 12:14 pm

I’ve been trying to dress up some of my workout wear a little too since I pretty much live in it. I also absolutely love thumb holes, but when I wear them I realize how much I wash my hands as a mama. 😉

I went to a new Athleta store in my area recently, and I gotta say….I might like their clothes better than lululemon! I am also a group ex instructor, so work out clothes that can transfer from class to the real world are the best! I know they are in the same family as gap, banana, ON, but I promise it wasn’t the same stuff marked up (it is expensive, boo). I didn’t see any sale items in the store which was a bummer, but it looks like they have sale items online, but in limited sizes. I heard that you can sometimes use coupons for the gap family on athleta though…I guess I’ll have to read the fine print on the 20 and 30% off coupons I receive so often. The best part is, you can work out/run errands/lay around in their clothes and if you discover that they just aren’t working for ya, you can still return them

  31. Kayla on January 16, 2013 at 4:04 pm

These posts are floating all around the blog world recently. I really appreciate the way you’ve handled it. By actually laying out your real life favourites while mentioning the pros and cons of the sponsored product. I think it’s a bit weird that all of a sudden all the bloggers love Old Navy. I want you all to make money, but I love that you really held onto your own integrity in the process. So that’s for that.

    • Fitnessista on January 16, 2013 at 4:05 pm

      thank you kayla <3

  32. Brit on January 16, 2013 at 4:33 pm

Went to Old Navy after you and Skinny Runner reviewed their new work out line. LOVE the yoga pants, the xs fits great, not too tight. I semi-dress them up with cute scarf and sweatshirt, perfect for studying for the bar during the day and running errands in the evenings

  33. Doug on January 17, 2013 at 12:12 pm

I haven’t been to Old Navy in FOREVER, but now I really want to! Haha. I have to say as well, having a post sponsored by a clothing company isn’t bad at all – after all, we’re on here to work out and share success stories. Isn’t sharing what to wear to show off the bodies we’ve been working on important as well? 😉

While I MAY end up going more towards the men’s section of the store for some wardrobe upgrades (they fit my male figure a bit better, after all) I still found your discussion a bit inspirational and it makes me want to go there with my workout partner and girlfriend so we can re-equip ourselves for once we’re done with our workout plans and hit our goals. Thanks so much for the post!
