You stay classy, San Diego

After an afternoon of driving, the Journey station on Pandora, lots of reminiscing and goofing around, many stops to stretch my swollen ankles (and randomly seeing a friend of mine at a California gas station!)

we made it 🙂

beach

It’s absolutely GORGEOUS here. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been to San Diego (high school maybe?) and the Pilot has never been, so it will be fun to explore it together.

Our hotel is lovely, too.

Nice comfy bed:

But what takes it over the top is the view from our room….

room

We got here just in time to watch the sunset from the balcony,

pilot me

and below on the beach, many people were doing the same- just standing there amazed.

sunset

We walked around to check out the surrounding hotels and see what stores and restaurants were on Mission, and now we’re back at the hotel getting ready for dinner.

I think there’s a lounge chair and a mocktail with my name on it…. 😉

See ya in the morning!

Something to talk about: When was the last time you went to the beach? What’s your all-time fave spot? One Ocean holds a special place in our hearts, but the hotel we’re at now may be our west coast version.

And just so you can have people ask you “which way to the beach”, here’s

Something to do:

Sunday Night Arm Burner!

Add this in to your next weights routine, or after the Schweaty November Workout for a nice bonus burn. [As always, check with a doc before making any fitness changes and honor your body and your injuries]

*Since the focus of this burner is to build muscular endurance instead of strength/power, focus on doing as many as you can with good quality during the 1 minute time period. If you tire before 1 minute, that’s ok! Remember with strength training failure = success.

-Burnout bicep curls: start at a weight slightly heavier than you would do (Maybe 2 weights up?) and do as many reps as you can (aim for 10). Put the weights down, grab a slightly lighter weight and do your second set (10-12). For the third set, grab your usual weight and do 10-15. You may notice that your usual weight will feel twice as heavy.

-Bench tricep dips- as many as you can do within 1 minute

-Decline push-ups – as many as you can do within 1 minute

-Overhead press- as many as you can do within 1 minute

Stretch.

I love the beach! We live right on the water of Lake Michigan in Chicago, but it’s so not the same 🙂 Last time I was at the beach was in July on our honeymoon, but I’m so looking forward to being in California for the holidays with the in-laws! San Diego looks amazing!

Just so ya know, I drive past One Ocean every week as I drive to volunteer at a weekly farmer’s market and I think of you every time. Last week I swear I heard it calling your name as I went by. 😉

    Have fun in CA!

Here in MI its said you are always within 6 miles of a body of water so when its warm we go as much as possible. However I think the time I will remember the most was this last summer while visiting my mom in TX, we took our kids to Galviston. The excitement in their eyes at the site of the ocean for the first time is unforgettable.

San Diego is my favorite city in the us!! Partly because my sister lives there and partly because it is just amazing!!

  9. Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty on November 13, 2011 at 9:40 pm

Gina! You should download the urbanspoon app – it’s awesome and tells you great restaurants close by! We use it every time we travel and find total gems!!

    Enjoy every second!

My husband and I just moved to San Diego a little over a week ago!! We’re living in the Pacific Beach area and love the city already. It’s really hard to stay inside when the weather is so beautiful outside!

  11. Juanita on November 13, 2011 at 9:55 pm

I go by the beach almost everyday because I live near it! 😀
But also live in the redwood trees so sunsets become a beautiful orange, purple, pink color in the trees it really is one of the most amazing things to see.

My favorite beach is Port Aransas, Tx. We go every year in October, stay in the same hotel, and eat at the same resturaunt every night! All of my favorite family memories are from there 🙂

  17. Ali on November 13, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Wow! It looks beautiful where you are! I am totally envious of you. I can’t even remember the last time I went to the beach! I hope it happens to me some time soon though!

Try Tabule Restaurant if you have a chance. Wonderful, high quality food and very good prices. Enjoy!

  19. Danna on November 13, 2011 at 11:14 pm

You MUST do The Cottage for breakfast and George’s rooftop patio for lunch. Enjoy our town 🙂

  20. Lea S. on November 13, 2011 at 11:34 pm

It looks lovely!! Hope you’re enjoying beautiful San Diego!!

The last time I went to the beach was in April when I went to home to visit my family. My favorite “hip” beach is Huntington Beach. That was the place we would always go have bon fires while in high school. I love the beach, and cannot wait until I am living in California again!

  21. chrissy on November 13, 2011 at 11:40 pm

ahh…i like san diego. i’m more of a south beach girl myself, don’t make it to the southwest much. HOWEVER, Renee’s Organic Kitchen sounds so delicious, I might have to go back to Arizona:) Never been to Tucson!

  22. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on November 14, 2011 at 12:10 am

So glad you made it and that the room is fabulous with a perfect view. Everyone should have a babymoon like this! Not only is this trip great now, but in 6 mos or 6 years you will look back on this trip and appreciate it even more. So happy for you guys!

Enjoy your dinner. Can’t wait to hear where you went…and if I’ve been there before or not! ha!

  23. Lauren H on November 14, 2011 at 12:14 am

Ahh – I know that view anywhere – Tower 23! That is where my BF and I had our first date, almost 4 years ago. Have so much fun!!!!

    • Lauren H on November 14, 2011 at 12:16 am

Oh and you MUST try Isabel’s Cantina. It is only 2-3 blocks from there. It has amazing brunch and lunch – healthy asian/mexican fusion.

  24. Sara on November 14, 2011 at 12:44 am

Positano, Italy – on the Amalfi Coast. It is sooo beautiful there and most hotels have an incredible view of the sea (even the cheap-ass backpackers hostel does!).

  25. Jen on November 14, 2011 at 2:10 am

So, this is kinda creepy but I know exactly where those pictures were taken because that’s like 1 mile from where I live! Since it’s SD and all, you might be in the mood for a good burrito. You HAVE to go to Los Dos Pedros (it’s N on Mission, on Mission and Turquoise), everything is delicious but my fave is the veggie burrito. The Broken Yolk (on Garnet, between Kendall and Lamont) was on Man Versus Food and they have HUGE, tasty portions…they’re only open for breakfast and get packed on the weekends. I feel like a walking Zagat guide :-o.

**Fun fact: The streets going West-East are alphabetical, after Mission Blvd. Mission, Bayard, Cass, Dawes, etc.

I go to the beach almost once a week ( live in the north bay of California.) The most gorgeous place on earth IMHO are the beaches of Sonoma County. Especially Salmon Creek or Bodega Head ( not really a beach but oh so pretty.) I love living close to the ocean, I definitely feel blessed. Have fun in SD!

  27. Jaime on November 14, 2011 at 3:23 am

we’re hoping to go to SD or a beach in SoCal for our babymoon in Feb. I’d love to hear where you stayed

I grew up in Rhode Island, so the beaches there will always hold a special place for me. Every time I go back, I just feel like my best self. Corny, but very true!

Although the view from where you guys are doesn’t look too shabby, either ; )

I went to the beaches on lakes around my city this summer, but the last time I was at a REAL beach was in Cuba three years ago. It’s been way too long!

Hope you have a great day today! 🙂

  32. Amanda on November 14, 2011 at 8:10 am

What a spectacular view. I’ve only been to San Diego once – in high school with my then-boyfriend, now-husband (!!) and his family. We had such a great time and I have such fond memories of that trip. 🙂

    Enjoy your mini-vacay!

My husband and I went to the beach on Saturday! It was a cool, blustery November day in New Hampshire, but we got some great pics and had a nice long walk. Of course, we promptly undid any progress from our walk by turning it into a pubcrawl. Oops.

    That view is unreal!!!

I went to NC this summer with a couple of girlfriends and we were in our own little oasis of a hotel surrounded by greenery and trees. Sitting by the pool was amazing! It was like we were in a different world.

  40. Chelsa on November 14, 2011 at 9:59 am

Wow what a beautiful view! I love the ocean. My fiance and I either want to get married in Watch Hill Rhode Island at the Ocean House Resort (best New England beach ever!) or in South Beach at a hotel on the beach. Have you ever been to South Beach? I’m in love with it!

The last time I saw the beach was in April when I went to Barcelona, Spain. It’s beautiful there, but the beaches were so-so. The best beaches I’ve seen (so far) were in Hawaii. I would love to go to Thailand or Tahiti though!

  44. Amanda on November 14, 2011 at 10:52 am

Hi Gina! I read your blog often, but haven’t commented much. I hope you’re enjoying your trip!

I know you said you were going to look for some maternity pants while in San Diego…I just wanted to pass it on that 6pm.com has some James Jeans (maternity) on sale today for 60 – 75% off. Thought you might want to check them out!

    • Fitnessista on November 14, 2011 at 11:06 am

whooooaaaaa. do i order my pre-preg size? or how does it work?

      • Amanda on November 14, 2011 at 12:22 pm

I know, I couldn’t believe the prices when I saw them! You order the size you would wear now. Don’t worry about your belly, of course, since the stomach material is stretchy. 🙂 But, the leg part fits like their regular jean sizes. (Ie. – if your normal jeans are a little tight right now I would go one size up!)

Good news is they’re great about taking returns if they don’t fit. I order from their site all the time, and never have any problems sending something back if it doesn’t fit.

        • Fitnessista on November 14, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Creepy that I know exactly where you are and loving it at the same time. I met and fell in love in San Diego years ago in college (UCSD) and that’s where I met my Husband. We enjoyed many a sunset from those beaches. He proposed at sunset on the cliffs by La Jolla. <3 I am so glad you are able to go to SD and enjoy it's beauty. Have a great time down there!

ah! I miss Pacific Beach! I used to live about half a mile from that hotel. I’m just catching up on blog posts after a weekend trip so I’m probably late with this suggestion BUT if you get the chance – Cafe 976 for breakfast. You will LOVE. Isabel’s Cantina right next door is also AMAZEBALLS for dinner.
