1/10: Friday Faves

Bfast 1 of 1 11

-These lilies the Pilot picked up. He said Livi helped him pick them out, and they’ve bloomed so beautifully! Being surprised with flowers never gets old.

Lilies 1 of 1 2

-This post about the friendship dating scene

-This swimsuit. I’ve been in the market for a new one-piece to wear when I take Livi to the beach, and am already lusting for this one. I’ll be lurking for a sale…

-What sleep loss will do to you.

-KT tape, which has become a running essential. I’ve heard you either can’t live without it or don’t really notice a difference, but it’s really helped to support my knee. They have YouTube videos which teach you how to tape -there’s a little bit of a learning curve- but I got the hang of it after a while and use it often.

Kt tape 1 of 1 2

-Livi’s birthday cake. We’ve been enjoying slices with our coffee over here 😉

(love the tiny ballerinas)

2014 food resolutions

-Reunited with my beloved night cream. The light rose scent is lovely, and it leaves my face silky and smooth when I wake up.

-No favorite candles this week -I’m still burning through the Fresh Balsam I hoarded- but am loving this Scentsy warmer. It was a Christmas gift from madre, and I’ve loved using it.

Scentsy 1 of 1

-The audiobook of “Eat That Frog” by Brian Tracy, which I’ve been listening to during cardio. Lots of productivity tips for the new year!

-A Friday with NO PLANS. I have no idea what we’re doing, and it’s going to be glorious 🙂

Hope you have a happy one! Be sure to check out the new Tabata workout!

xoxo

Omg that sleep article is speaking to me. I’ve been getting nowhere near enough sleep lately and I’m feeling it. I need to set a bedtime and stick to it.

Happy Friday! Those flowers are beautiful!

I hate shopping for swim suits… so expensive and never seem to fit right! But it’s cute!
That cake looks absolutely declicious!! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:21 pm

seriously! especially mid afternoon with a cup of coffee

  6. Kaylee on January 10, 2014 at 12:13 pm

Oh dear, that sleep article hits a bit too close to home! Getting my insomnia under control is for sure one of my 2014 resolutions.

That is very sweet that the Pilot and Liv chose flowers for you!

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:21 pm

      it made my day!
sleep impacts everything. it’s funny that i used to take it for granted, and now i always want more of it 🙂

  7. Sylvia on January 10, 2014 at 12:15 pm

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:20 pm

  9. Catherine on January 10, 2014 at 12:33 pm

Love the friendship dating article!! My husband is in the military too and I always find it so awkward trying to make new friends. Luckily at the unit he’s at now, he works with a good group of people that are always socializing so it’s helped us branch out and meet lots of people.

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:20 pm

it’s one of the most awkward things ever. it should be interesting because the pilot will be consulting, so we won’t have a squadron that we’re attached to

  10. Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs on January 10, 2014 at 12:40 pm

I’m still drooling over that birthday cake 🙂

    Happy Friday!

  13. Kristi on January 10, 2014 at 1:35 pm

Hey Gina! I’m a fan of you and your blog, and I know you love barre but also have a love affair with spinning (I’m super jealous of your in-home/garage spin bike, btw).

I read an article today that gave my blood pressure a little jolt. I’d be curious of your thoughts on this:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2536557/Spinning-bulks-thighs-Tracy-Anderson-trendy-workout-actually-make-GAIN-weight.html

I’ve tapped into barre training a bit, and I normally have a pretty neutral stance on Tracy Anderson, but this article makes me angry. As an ex-spin instructor, I have seen the transformation spinning has made for many people because they fell in love with it and they start to actually enjoyed exercise, some for the first time in their life. Spinning is a low-impact cardio method to burn calories that many love. I think some will read the article as “stop spinning to fit in your jeans!” Whaaaaaat?

I would argue that her methods don’t incorporate enough cardio, for me at least… isn’t it all about balance and choosing what works best for you?

I believe that the best exercise is the one that will inspire you to do it, so why take cheap diggers at other methods? I thought we, as in we, the fitness industry, were so over freaking women out over “bulking up” unless you power lift with bulking up as your intention. “Hey women, you need to be skinny and muscular, but not too muscular!” Thanks to genetics, many of us are “doomed” to be too skinny or too muscular no matter what we do. Too fat, too skinny, too muscular – we can’t win.

Sounds like she’s bitter about some feud with the SoulCyle founder, which makes her publicized opinion even worse.

Shame on you, Tracy Anderson. Please stop focusing on “size” and making women feel bad about choosing exercise methods that inspire them to live active, healthy lives.

(Ugh)… That was a big step down from my soap box. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:19 pm

i like some of her workouts, but i think she’s totally bizarre. i also hate that she scares women away from lifting heavy weights or doing other exercises. we don’t have the testosterone to bulk up in less we’re actively trying to build tons of muscle, and i think a lot of the stuff she says is total rubbish.

  14. Cassie Vaughn on January 10, 2014 at 1:39 pm

I have a scent warmer like that but I’m always terrified of the cat bothering it and spilling wax all over and on himself! Yikes!

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:17 pm

plug it in a high place? or is he a climber??

  15. Cindy on January 10, 2014 at 1:40 pm

You MUST check out CW-X running pants to help your knee. After electro therapy for a damn ages knee, I lived in KT tape. Then I saw an ad for the pants, my wonderful hubby got them as an early Christmas gift and now I am running great again, sans KT tape! They support your joints and knee plus oodles of other good things. CW-X.com

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:17 pm

looking at them now! thank you!

    • Sarahf on January 11, 2014 at 10:39 pm

Yes! They are super popular here in Japan, and I can say they are amazing! I noticed the difference without them.

      • Fitnessista on January 12, 2014 at 11:07 am

i can’t wait to try them!

  16. Ashlee@HisnHers on January 10, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Aw I love the ballerina’s on Liv’s pink cake. That is so cute, and I love that it isn’t a cheesy typical kids cake. It’s so pretty!

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:17 pm

Did the Tabata workout you posted yesterday this morning. Kicked my butt. 4 minutes isn’t long, but Tabata sure has a way of making it last. Thanks for posting. It’s nice to have something new to spruce up the workout routine.

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:16 pm

BOOM. great job!! so happy you liked it

Hi! First I have not said CONGRATULATIONS yet on the book! Yay! Can’t wait.

If you like that Tracey book, try “Turning Pro” by Steven Pressfield!! Loving it.

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:15 pm

thank you so much! yay, i’ll definitely check it out

  21. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on January 10, 2014 at 3:29 pm

Cute suit, but in pretty sure you will be the only one on the San Diego beaches in a one piece. Fit or not, I can’t think of the last time I saw anyone around my age in a one piece!

I’ll have to read that link about sleep when I have a chance. Although I’m kind of scared to see what it says with the lack of sleep I’ve had the past year or so.

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 4:12 pm

almost all of my girlfriends have chic vintage-style one pieces. i like bikinis too, but prefer to keep my goodies in place while i chase liv around 😉

      • Laura B @ Fit Mama Love on January 11, 2014 at 12:47 am

I have fortunately only had one near incident where my son grabbed the strings to my top and they came undone. Caught it before anything showed, thank goodness!

      • Kristen on January 11, 2014 at 9:34 pm

I just moved from So Cal to Nor Cal, am under 30 and fit as well. I would always wear a cute one piece like the one pictured and never feel out of place. Especially in San Diego – a lot of the ladies participate in Water Sports so bikinis just won’t cut it for coverage.

  22. Captain Competition on January 10, 2014 at 3:39 pm

Absolutely love weekend days with no plans (Friday is a weekend day right?). But what is even better is having the brother-in-law not only give you hockey tickets (for me and the wife) but also volunteer to come over and babysit while you go to the game…SCORE!

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:15 pm

i totally think friday is a weekend day 🙂
      have fun at the game!!

  23. Stephanie on January 10, 2014 at 4:21 pm

I just got a one piece. I’m pregnant so I obviously need one but I was going to get one anyways because I felt weird when I had to wear my bikini to my girl’s swim lessons at the Y. Lots of moms did but bit felt too sexy for the Y. Lol

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:12 pm

yeah when i’m with liv i feel more comfortable when i’m more conservative

  24. Leanne on January 10, 2014 at 4:30 pm

I LOVE Scentsy! I have 3…and live in a 1200 sq. foot apartment (I don’t have them all going at the same time though, lol). My favourite scent has to be “Luna” – I never get sick of it.

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:11 pm

haha i just ordered two more! i’ll have to check out that fragrance 🙂

      • Jennie on January 11, 2014 at 4:35 pm

I got hooked on Scentsy last fall. Love it! What scents do you like?

        • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:51 pm

i have transcendence (which is a little strong but i like it) but just ordered a couple of new ones. what’s your fave?? i’m new to it!

  25. Kaelene @Unlocking Kiki on January 10, 2014 at 4:48 pm

How sweet what pretty lilies. I am loving candles this week, anything to try and brighten up the dark winter mornings.

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:11 pm

      i have a candle problem 😉

  26. Julie on January 10, 2014 at 5:18 pm

Sometimes or more like, a lot of times, I prefer staying home on Friday night to recuperate. I’m more likely to go out on Saturdays.

  27. Kylie on January 10, 2014 at 5:19 pm

Hmmm…maybe I should try the KT tape. My knee gives me trouble during workouts sometimes and it’s so annoying. Where did you buy yours from?

    Happy Friday!

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2014 at 5:23 pm

at a local running store. amazon has it too

  28. Melissa on January 10, 2014 at 6:21 pm

What happened to your investment swimsuit?

  29. kimberly on January 10, 2014 at 8:35 pm

That swimsuit!! To die for! And that Korres night cream is my favourite too! The scent is amazing! I also love scentsy warmers I have too many scents to count!

  30. Karissa on January 10, 2014 at 9:03 pm

I have to say Gina, I actually look forward to these posts every Friday!! Lol they make Friday even better.
Lol sleep is totally one of my passions 😉 But I really definitely need to make sure I’m getting more consistently, not just playing catch up on the weekend. And I enjoyed the food resolutions! I kind of went through and saw what I’m already eating and what I really want to add. Swiss chard definitely sounds like a winner!

  31. Livi on January 10, 2014 at 10:30 pm

I can’t blame you! That cake looks amazing!!

  32. Christina @ The Beautiful Balance on January 11, 2014 at 1:24 am

KT tape is awesome and I have definitely noticed a difference when I run!

    • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:53 pm

me too! love it so much!

  33. Megan @ TheSkinny-Life on January 11, 2014 at 9:14 am

I love KT tape, but must admit I have never been successful in putting it on right. It always ends up falling off. Either I’m slow or you need a degree in KT application!

    • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:53 pm

do you wash the area first?! that helps a ton for me. i use a yes to facial wipe on my thigh and knee and let it dry before putting the tape on. works wonders!

      • Megan @ TheSkinny-Life on January 11, 2014 at 8:51 pm

I haven’t tried washing first, but I will. I’m doing the PF Chang half marathon in Phoenix next weekend. Thanks for the tip!

        • Fitnessista on January 12, 2014 at 11:07 am

hope you have a great race!!!

  34. Whitney @ To Live & Diet in L.A. on January 11, 2014 at 1:08 pm

Love that post about the “friendship dating scene.” Although I’m not a military wife, I think we all can relate to the difficulty making new female friends as adults. It’s not as easy as when you’re growing up and you naturally meet people through school or athletics.

If you want to get a head start on knocking that out when you’re in San Diego, grab that adorable Anthropology swimsuit and meet me at Santa Monica pier! L.A. is just a few beaches away 🙂 xoxo

    • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:52 pm

      it’s so much harder!
yes, let’s do it! 🙂 i have a feeling i’ll be in LA fairly often, so we’ll have to meet up!
      xoxo

  35. Glenn on January 11, 2014 at 1:24 pm

I run all the time and am not familiar with the tape. Why do you need it?

    • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:51 pm

it helps to provide support, which is fantastic for my knee. some people love it while others don’t notice a difference

  36. Stephanie @ Whole Health Dork on January 11, 2014 at 3:06 pm

I also love KT tape! I’ve been using it to help me recover from plantar fasciitis and return to running. I don’t want to become dependent on it, though. It seems that every time I try to jog without it, I’m a bit more sore.
    How I use it: http://wholehealthdork.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/image_1757.jpeg

    • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:51 pm

awesome- i’m going to have the pilot try that! he has PF too

  37. Crystal@TheFastFitRunner on January 11, 2014 at 5:33 pm

That bathing suit is AMAZING….the price is not.

    • Fitnessista on January 11, 2014 at 5:50 pm

isn’t it horrible? hopefully i can grab it when it goes on sale

  38. Karen @ Fruitspire on January 11, 2014 at 7:35 pm

I love the book “Eat That Frog!” I can be such a procrastinator, that books is great for helping with that.

    • Fitnessista on January 12, 2014 at 11:08 am

i think so too! i’m really enjoying it so far. plus, he has a very pleasant voice 🙂

  39. Bethany on January 11, 2014 at 9:23 pm

Oh my gosh, I loved the friendship dating article…having pcs’d to california from NC after 5 years, I was dreading the making new friends…the whole awkward stage you go through….thankfully I did have a really good friend making the move with us, but we live on base, and she lives off….living on base has really helped…I got invited to a culdasac party the day we moved in! I feel like other military spouses make the best friends….so friendly, and most don’t have family around, so they want new friends too! Great article!

    • Fitnessista on January 12, 2014 at 11:07 am

i think so too. bummer is that where we’ll be stationed, the waiting list for base housing is 23 months! insane. so we’ll see how it goes 😉

  40. Sarahf on January 11, 2014 at 10:43 pm

The friendship dating article is brilliant! I’ll be moving to a new city in March (which is frighteningly soon…), and although I’m really excited about the new job and new city, I’m so nervous about meeting new friends. I’ll have to start carrying wine with me, or at least a flask of tea, for potential new friends!

    • Fitnessista on January 12, 2014 at 11:06 am

      hahah seriously!

  41. Roselyn @ Sass & Shenanigans on January 12, 2014 at 6:11 pm

I recently wrote a post using that friendship-dating article as inspiration…and because I just moved to San Diego. I can relate to that article in so many ways!
