WMOW: Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Hi friends 🙂 How’s your almost-Friday going?

We just got back from our lovely morning walk with little Meal and munched a morning meal 😉

burrito

(Egg white burrito with salsa, berries)

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Workout Move of the Week, but figured it would be a great time to do a shoulder exercise since tank tops, strapless and halters are on the horizon 🙂

This week’s move: Dumbbell Deltoid Lateral Raise

What you need: Pair of lighter dumbbells (3, 5, or 8 lbs)

How-To-Do-Seated-Dumbell-Tricep-Curls

Form check:

For this move, you want your feet to be directly under your hip bones, abs contracted and chest proud. Make sure to breathe as you perform the movement (exhale as the weights come up) and do not allow the weights to travel higher than your shoulders.

*As always, check with a doc before making any fitness changes- honor your body and your injury.

The video: (+ 2 challenging modifications)

Hope this helped you guys change up your current shoulder routine 🙂

For more WMOW fun, check out:

-Plank

-Burpees

Lunge and lift

Bicep curl and plie squat

As always, let me know if you have any WMOW requests! 😀

Off to find my productivity hat.. it’s here somewhere 😉

xoxo

Gina

bookmarked. thanks for the video! i’ve never heard of using milk in soap… am i just a complete soap newbie or is that a rare thing?

    • Fitnessista on April 7, 2011 at 1:18 pm

it’s a more rare specialty type thing. the soaps are usually very hard to find and expensive- this promo is pretty awesome

  5. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on April 7, 2011 at 1:19 pm

LOL! I just did this move as part of my workout this morning! Great video Gina! I love the burns-so-good feeling I get after a good shoulder workout. Your burrito also looks yummy!

  6. Jessica @ brighteyesandbushytales on April 7, 2011 at 1:19 pm

What kind/brand of wrap/tortilla did you use to make this burrito? It looks delicious! 🙂

my sister’s friends make soaps down in savannah and love when people support them all (they look pretty similar to what you have) love the shorts!

AWESOME promo! I just got the email, it looks great….perfect gift for my MIL! Thanks!

  10. Carrie on April 7, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Lateral raises are killer! It’s amazing how I’ll be using 25lb dumbbells for everything else, but have to set them down and grab the 10’s for raises! Great tip about bringing the weights just back down to your side, instead of in front of you. I’ve been prone to do that in the past.

  11. Holly @ The Runny Egg on April 7, 2011 at 1:28 pm

Love the workout move Gina — that last version looks killer!!!

  12. Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food on April 7, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Awesome, I’m all about the arms/ shoulders right now 😀

  14. AJ on April 7, 2011 at 1:39 pm

My breakfast was the exact same thing except a whole wheat wrap and I include the yolk. Every breakfast is better with berries on the side. I’ve been obsessing over fresh blackberries lately. OMG.

  15. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on April 7, 2011 at 1:53 pm

This is perfect for summer and so easy to do at home! 🙂

  16. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on April 7, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Definitely need to work on my shoulders — major slacker in that department 😉

  17. Janna on April 7, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Thanks for the workout tips – p.s. you have the most gorgeous hair!

  18. Chelsea on April 7, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Yummy breakfast burrito! I had zero motivation to go the gym today…prob do to the snow. I think I could go and do some weights. Thanks for the motivation I need sexy arms for summer!

  19. Ashley on April 7, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Love the side plank version!! There are a few shoulder moves, similar to that one, that I’ve been doing for years. Definitely love the definition in my shoulders! 🙂

  20. Maren on April 7, 2011 at 2:48 pm

perfect! I just did some lateral raises today at the gym. Too bad I didn’t see this before! 🙂 You are so dang pretty! Thanks for all the awesome advice!

  24. Joelle on April 7, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Thanks for the video! So much better to watch a video rather than read steps.
Call me nuts, but I’m not able to fold the tortilla to make a burrito. It drives me crazy, and feel like an idiot too…. oh well, I’ll just enjoy looking the pic of yours!
BTW, was the email sent already? Didn’t get anything.

  25. Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries on April 7, 2011 at 3:16 pm

This is one of my favorite moves. Thanks for posting ways to make it a little more challenging!

  26. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 7, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Thanks for the video, Gina, and lat dumbbell raises are so great to make your arms just POP and look awesome. I love that move!

The soaps…mmm, they sound wonderful. I love goat’s milk soap and when Skylar was a baby used to order all kinds of exotic, handmade, goat’s milk soaps from soapmakers on etsy and other sites.

The one you featured looks great.

    Have a wonderful day 🙂

  27. Laura @ prettylittlewords on April 7, 2011 at 3:52 pm

I looooooove deltoid lateral raises, they burn so good! Probs my favorite shoulder move 🙂

Question — why didn’t you recommend going over 8lbs? I usually do 8, but sometimes kick it up to 10lbs. Is that too much?

    • Fitnessista on April 7, 2011 at 5:41 pm

i think 10 is pretty bold, but if you can do it without hurting yourself, rock on. i wouldn’t go up to 12, though- just add more reps or try one of the harder variations i give in the video

  28. Moni'sMeals on April 7, 2011 at 3:59 pm

    nice clip!

  29. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on April 7, 2011 at 4:04 pm

  32. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on April 7, 2011 at 6:50 pm

That move is killer! I usually get tired with only 5 lb weights after 1 set. 😛

  33. Susanne on April 7, 2011 at 7:46 pm

      • Babs on April 8, 2011 at 8:50 am

        I miss AZ:)

  35. Krystina (Organically Me) on April 7, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Girl, how do you NOT break those tortillas? I bust ’em whenever I make a wrap.

    • Fitnessista on April 7, 2011 at 9:09 pm

i heat them for about 20 min first

  36. Alex on April 7, 2011 at 9:40 pm

your cheery attitude is so contagious! 🙂

  37. Barbara W on April 8, 2011 at 10:23 am

Hello! I have a recipe question for ya…
I see that you use the brown rice wraps occassionally for your wraps and burritos. Whenever I try to wrap a sandwich or burrito with the brown rice wraps (I get the ones from Trader Joes) they are a big cracked up and torn mess. Can you share your wrapping technique and/or brand of wrap?
    Thanks so much!! Barbara W
(love your blog – super positive and lots of fun! <3)

Just got my goat’s milk soaps delivered today! I could literally smell their yumminess through the cardboard delivery box! They look amazing, and I’m so excited to use them…I’m not sure how I’ll be able to wait until the 5/5 cure date!
