Boston Blitz

Hi friends! I’m back from my little Boston blitz. It’s hard to believe that I was actually in town for less than 24 hours before heading back to Tucson– we did so much!

I’m not able to go into details about everything -I can say that some awesome Reebok product is on the way- but I can tell you about hotel fun and our awesome group CrossFit workout.

Number 1: the Boston foliage is just as gorgeous as I recall

and 2: I got my chowdah 🙂 It was everything I could wish for.

Since I got into town fairly late, and wasn’t about to go exploring on my own at night in the cold, I decided to do a quick Physique 57 workout and stretch/abs sesh before bed. I love that P57 has online workouts available, and since they’re short and killer (oh, the burn!) I knew it was a good option. I did the 30-minute advanced workout, and then some stretching and my favorite yoga poses.

I relaxed, ordered room service, and Skped with the Pilot and Oliv. It was lovely.

Along with my soup, some wine and a grilled salmon salad:

The next morning, it was off to the Reebok headquarters!

It was my first time visiting Reebok, even though I’ve worked with them for quite a while. The last time they asked me to visit, Livi was a couple months old, and I wasn’t ready to travel yet. This time, she was happy at home with her daddy and I got to see the Reebok excitement for the first time.

First, we were treated to coffee and breakfast before the main events. After that, it was lunch time and then a group CrossFit workout at their very own CrossFit box.

and along with the beautiful scenery, it boasts a full-sized gym, group fitness classes for employees, a running trail and basketball court. Pretty awesome, huh?

The CrossFit box had more equipment than the one I attend at home, and is open to employees for WODs or completing their own CrossFit workouts.

To warm up, we went outside to their Spartan obstacle course. It was my first time jumping over walls, balancing walks on logs, and pulling the ropes with heavy things attached (scientific terms).

It was awesome. At one point, we had to alternate giving piggy-back rides with a partner across the field, which left me feeling like it was a great workout. Surprise! That was the warm up. After that, we went inside for our workout of the day, called “Jackie.”

I scaled the workout with my current knee situation and (knock on wood), it felt fine during the workout. It had been a while since my last rowing session, and it felt glorious. A nice workout was the perfect thing to do before heading out for another night of travel, which of course, wasn’t complete without a legendary delay getting home. It felt good to sleep in my comfy bed and I can’t wait to kiss Livi when she wakes up.

When was the last time you traveled? Where’d you go? 

What’s the first thing you do when you get home? I usually say hello to the Pilot (and Livi, if she’s not snoozing – I’m always tempted to wake her up!) and then proceed to dance around the house with Bella, who gets CRAZY excited, whether I’ve been gone for a week or an hour. Caro will shake her tail and lift her head off the couch to say she missed me 😉

    I still haven’t tried crossfit yet! it is on my bucket list! 🙂 and I’m waiting for the Reebok details! It looks like you had a wonderful trip. Too fun!

    Oh I love travelling but coming home is always so stressful! The house invariably always needs to be cleaned and a lot of laundry done! The last place I traveled was to Cali and it was amazing. Glad you enjoyed Boston (albeit it for a short while). I love the Physique online workouts too!

    Obstetrical courses are so much fun, it doesn’t even feel like you are working out when you run them. Looks like a lot to pack into 24 hours.

    Last travel was to DC about a year ago (Dec 2012) for work. Got home that time and my girls were at a sleep over with friends. Didn’t get to see them until the next morning, so just went to bed.

    I haven’t yet done more research on the matter, but if the article is citing proper statistics, this would mean CrossFit is a pretty disturbing threat to people’s health. Has anyone else read about this?

      I am an avid Crossfitter and read the article a few weeks ago. I haven’t done research into the stats but I can say from experience that every Crossfit affiliate gym is different.

      At my gym, they talk about rhabdo and it’s common for coaches to remind us that we should push ourselves in our workouts but that it’s more important to be able to show up the rest of the week than go too far in one workout. We are always provided with alternative movements and scaling options and coaches provide a lot of guidance during the workout to make sure we scale if necessary. I have heard about other Crossfit gyms that encourage people to continue working out while injured or to potentially push beyond what is healthy, and that is a challenge of having affiliates that operate under a common name but may not use the same level of common sense. I think that a lot has to do with both the affiliate and the individual – if a person doesn’t know his or her own limits (or be able to speak up when they reach them) – it may not be the best excercise option.

      i’ve actually read the article a few times, and can see both sides of it. for one thing, the article mistakes some facts, including where she says that rhabdo causes cells to “explode.” rather, myolysis due to the exercise itself causes cell rupture, releasing myoglobin into the bloodstream, which is a renal toxin. rhabdo is extremely rare and used to be seen in bombing victims, who overexert themselves to escape bomb wreckage. now, they’re seeing it from crossfit attendants, which is scary.
      i think it all comes down to knowing your own limits and not pushing past them. its also critical to attend a crossfix box with certified trainers, who make sure everyone is completing their own best version of the workout. as a fitness professional, i’m well aware of my limits and know when to scale or stop. the average joe or jane, just getting started in fitness, may not have the body awareness or proper form knowledge to safely complete the workouts. but, then again, this could happen with any type of fitness- not just crossfit.
      i think the article, while failing in scientific evidence and only using anecdotal experience, is just written as a warning. attend a reputable cross fit box, learn proper form and technique, and listen to your body.

    Last place I traveled was Chicago this past weekend to watch my husband run his marathon! We have another trip planned to DC as long as the Marine Corps Marathon doesn’t get shut down!

    I always say hello to my sweet doggy who is crazy happy to see me when I get home!

    As a side note – I love it when you do product reviews, especially fitness clothes/shoes – my favorite is when you go into all the details right down to the clothing stays drenched from work-out sweat.

    So on that note – who is that black/white striped top from (pic with Tina)? Is that Reebok? So cute!

    I actually have a job where I travel all the time. I am an actor on a tour of a show. We go from hotel to hotel and drive to gigs in between. Seeing new places is exciting and I love performing and I do my best to make each hotel feel comfortable with my pumpkin pie candle and my stuffed animal. Right now “home” is my parents house (where I store some of my things). I’ll get to see them for Christmas, which will be my first time “home” since January.

    The last place I went was my former homeland of San Diego, to get some REAL summer (Washington is nice and all, but the summer is very disappointing when you’re from CA).

    Yea, Boston is my hometown. Glad you enjoyed your (quick) stay! Reebok is pretty great. And so is chowder. Go Red Sox! ps: Last time I traveled was to St. Kitts and it was lovely…..

    I always look forward to seeing my cat Kevin after I’ve been gone…………he greets me at the door and is even cuter after I’ve missed him for a few days:)
    I went to Las Vegas over Labor Day, it was my first visit and it was a busy-walk filled good time!

    Looks like a blast! I’m actually traveling right now for work up near the D.C. area. I travel 5-6 weeks out of the year and the first thing I always do when I get home after kissing my husband is play with my dog. She gets so excited that she has to bring out every toy she owns and show them to me. It’s adorable!

    The last time I traveled it was to go on vacation last summer. We stayed right on a beautiful lake – it was so relaxing.

    Hi I last travelled in July this year. I live in Australia and my partner and I had a 3 week holiday and went to LA, Vegas and New York. We had a great time! It was my second time to the USA, I’ve been to the West Coast before, but it was my first time to New York.

    Sounds like you had a quick but great time in Boston.

    my last time traveling was in August to the east coast (FL and VA) to see fam with Tripp – on my own. I had travelled with him before on my own but it was the first time that he wasn’t nursing and he was walking so I was terrified of the plane haha. It actually went really well and we had a great time. Next up: Vegas tomorrow for our triathlon this weekend and then San Diego next weekend (sans baby for the first time!!) for our 3 year anniverary. We like to travel. 🙂

    Nice side crow! Do you have any advice on how to get into (regular) crow pose? I only get instruction from one teacher — sometimes hearing it from someone else helps 🙂

      it’s really all about the balance transfer. i make sure my arms are bent (like a chatarunga), my knees are secure, and gaze about 6 inches in front of my hands. then i start to slowly transfer my balance forward– it’s about finding the sweet spot where your legs will easily float off the floor
