3/23: Thoughts from the week

Another long, but at the same time too short, amazing week <3

backyard2

-Friday has become Eclectic Cafe day with the girls over here. Two weeks ago, we met Kelly, Meara and their babies, last week it was Meg and Marisa, and today with Cheri. We usually sit on the patio, Liv either snoozes on me, or faces the table to take everything in and smile at the people who come say hi to her, and we enjoy wonderful company and fabulous food.

eclectic salad

(My all-time favorite restaurant salad: greens, chicken, blueberries, strawberries, walnuts and poppyseed dressing)

-Spring baby clothes are quite possibly the cutest thing ever.

outfits

(Heads up: EVERYTHING at Gymboree is 30% off until tomorrow)

sunglasses

-Speaking of clothes, I’m kind of stoked to bid adieu to the Empire waists that took over my closet last spring/summer. They look awesome on so many people, but since I have a short torso, they make me look preg. Which was great.. while I was preg.

dresses

-Someone is teething…

teething

Everything she can grab goes straight into her mouth so she can chomp down on it. She especially loves chomping and sucking on her hands, but will sometimes bite too hard, which will make her cry, then put her hands back in her mouth to sooth herself, repeat. I busted out her Vulli teethers this week, and am thinking about getting a baltic amber teething necklace. As of now, she doesn’t seem to be in too much pain, but teething sounds like it would be horrible- there’s probably a reason we don’t remember it.

-Since we’ve been going through a growth spurt + the beginning of teething this week, last night Liv and I had a little all-nighter party together. It’s mostly my fault because I’m not the best swaddler. She got both arms entirely out, was waving them around and smacking the sides of the bassinet. When I went over to check on her, she looked right at me and smiled, like “look what I did, Mom! Isn’t that so funny?”

Word on the street is that after the first year, the Men in Black come and zap your memory of the difficulties of having a newborn. Apparently, this is why people have more than one kid. I know that I’ll probably forget the handful of nights where she was inconsolable, even with a fresh diaper, belly full of food, lots of snuggles, rocking, singing, bouncing, you name it.

But, I know for sure, that I’ll never forget pulling her into bed with me last night. I was going to try to nurse her to sleep one last time, and if she would keep crying, at least she’d know I was right there next to her. She gave out the sweetest little sigh, and instantly fell asleep, curled up next to me.

(Thanks Geetha, for the pic!)

What was the last all-nighter you’ll always remember?

Any tips for teething?

Teething is rough. We are at the molar stage now.. Oy! My daughter would get 2 at a time and at 16 months she has 12 teeth. Doc said she is ahead of the game, I’m just glad I’ll be over with it sooner rather then later! Lol! We used the necklace, not sure if it helped. Hylands teething tablets, gripe water and lots of chew toys!! Do you have a Sophie giraffe? My daughter loved that!

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2012 at 9:14 pm

i’ll look into the teething tablets, thank you!
and yes, we definitely have a sophie- she loves it 🙂

Ugh… Don’t you just love Gymboree? It has robbed us of so much money.

As for teething, our little one always loved the cold teethers that you can freeze…. Her favorite was a washcloth. Just soak a cloth, wring it out, and put it in the freezer twisted up. She loved chewing on them once they were frozen!!

Those baby clothes are ADORABLE! I have to say, clothes will be one of the things I look forward to most when I become a mom someday. 😉 I hope teething goes okay for your little angel, I know that every baby is different but it’s not comfy for any of them! 🙁

  4. Allison on March 23, 2012 at 9:18 pm

that little strawberry dress is probably the cutest thing i’ve seen ever!

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Such a sweet post! It seems like Olivia is getting so big so quickly – I can’t believe she’s already teething.

PS – I LOVE the photo of her in the Thank You card you sent. So adorable!! I have it pinned up in our kitchen. How old was she in the photo?

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2012 at 9:51 pm

i think she was 3 weeks when we took those? i’m so glad you liked it 🙂

  9. Rebecca on March 23, 2012 at 9:39 pm

My baby (3 weeks older) is doing the same thing with sucking on his hands and chomping on everything. Sometimes I take a cool washcloth and rub it on his gums

  10. Katie on March 23, 2012 at 9:40 pm

Hylands teething tablets have been helping Mase. And when I’m really desperate…I use Tylenol. Ive heard the amber necklace works well too. Might have to give it a try.

  11. JennP on March 23, 2012 at 9:42 pm

You may find that she goes through little teething fits, but doesn’t necessarily get teeth right away. My daughter had several episodes during the first year where she’d show all of the teething signs (grumpy, drooling, chewing on hands, tugging on ears etc). These would come and go, but no teeth actually broke through until she was 13 months (which was really 10 months when you adjust for her prematurity). We use baby Tylenol on the rough nights… we all sleep a little sounder that way!

There are only TWO all nighters that I will always remember – unfortunately they were back to back! The night before we brought her home from the NICU (where she lived her first 3 months), we “roomed in” at the hospital so that we could practice reading her monitors and feeding her through the night. Then the next night, which was the day we brought her home, I just stared at her ALL night. Even though she was sleeping, I was too nervous/excited!!

  12. Vikki Morgan on March 23, 2012 at 9:45 pm

Don’t get her any kind of teething necklace Too Dangerous!!!

Loved that quote you put up! Needed to hear that today 🙂

  14. natalie on March 23, 2012 at 9:59 pm

The Men in Black must have forgot to stop by my place and zap me…… my son is 2 and a half, and everytime I see a baby and start to think I might want another, I immediately remember all the complications of c-section recovery, sleepless nights, post partum anxiety….. I def miss my chubby little baby, but having a blast watching him learn and grow 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2012 at 10:01 pm

i definitely think we’re going to wait a while before number 2, until liv is more independent.
totally hear ya on the anxiety- that was no joke

  15. Krystina (Krystina Zena) on March 23, 2012 at 10:07 pm

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything cuter than that strawberry outfit.

  16. Heather S on March 23, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Avery Grace is 11 weeks old and doing the same thing, the little security blanket animals are her new favorite things she cuddles them and loves to chomp on the little arms. Luckily, she has been sleeping amazingly the past 2 weeks 10-6 nursing then back down until 10 BUT it has been in bed with us which is sooo nice for the snuggles and comfort but we are ready to get her in her own bed so I am sure my sleepless nights will come back soon!

Those baby outfits are the cutest things ever! And the baby sunglasses.. ADORABLE!!

I’m a LONG ways away from having kids, but I know I will definitely look forward to the baby clothes shopping when I do get to that point! Everything is so cute!

  19. Tracy G on March 23, 2012 at 10:21 pm

I was so grateful for teething tablets! Of course, right after Emme was done teething is when they had the big recall. I think her Chiro had also recommended frozen ginger, but it’s been a while. I remember when her Ped told me at the 3 month visit she would start drooling excessively at 4 months, but teeth wouldn’t come in until 7 months. She started popping them at 5. We had some fun nursing episodes to work through after that.
Gymboree does have adorable clothes; however, my world changed when I discovered the wonderful world of shopping consignment sales for e. Used Gymboree clothes were even better!

  20. Steph on March 23, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Umm my son is about 2 years old and I SO remember how rough those first few months were. Pretty terrible for me at times, to be honest. And yet here I am, 30 weeks pregnant again! For me, even though I remember all the sleepless nights (and still experience them) having children is worth the struggles.

Hope she starts popping her teeth soon! Not all babies are bad teethers. I was blessed with a boy who wasn’t too affected by it. He had all his teeth by 13 months of age. =)

  21. Allison on March 23, 2012 at 10:26 pm

When my son was a baby he had an ear infection and we could basically only get him to sleep lying on my chest with me pretty much upright. I will never forget that. It was one of the longest nights and I was so exhausted.
Love those Gymboree outfits! I miss those days.

  22. Sara on March 23, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Teething sucks. Jazzy was great, hardly a problem – we got her lots of teething toys but the only one she liked was a wooden one that had a large, round gemstone attached to it, She chewed the whole thing, all the time, but loved the gemstone part the most – I think it was cold and hard and smooth and .. just right. My nephew however… teething involved a year of excessive drool. He was a drooling machine, never seen anything like it. He was like a carsick puppy (ever seen that?) all year… oh, and then when he finally did get a full set of baby teeth, he knocked the front ones out on a coffee table! Now he’s got no front teeth until the second set come in.. all that drool for very little gain.

  23. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on March 23, 2012 at 10:58 pm

Wow, she is getting so big! I love that first picture – it’s really, really sweet. What a great view you have 🙂

  24. Claire on March 23, 2012 at 11:15 pm

Have you tried the Swaddle Me blankets? My newborn stays in those much better than the blankets.

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Yes, that’s what we’ve been using. They’re amazing but I guess I don’t secure it tight enough

  25. Marie on March 24, 2012 at 12:44 am

I definitely haven’t forgotten how hard it was. We have thought about having another after our twins but then we remember. 😉 She just gets cuter and cuter every time we see her! 😉 I love that you cuddled with her. We co-slept with ours but were afraid of them being so small, too (born at 4.5lbs each) so we would hold them with their heads on our chest/upper arm and they would fall asleep within minutes. During the day, I’d have one on each arm, read them a story and they’d be out before I knew it. I will never forget those memories, especially since they have been sleep-trained since 5.5 months and can’t sleep anywhere but their own bed. Reading this made me think about those great memories. I love reading your family posts so much. You seem like you have such a huge amount of patience! Olivia is so blessed to have you as her mom.

  26. Julie on March 24, 2012 at 12:47 am

    I love that quote!

  27. Averie @ Averie Cooks on March 24, 2012 at 2:09 am

Spring baby clothes ARE the cutest thing ever.

The last all-nighter…working on an important project I had a deadline for about 6 mos ago. And prior to that, Skylar’s baby days..nursing all night. Bleary-eyed, didn’t know if I was up, down, or sideways…and have no idea how SHE was awake…but she was!

  28. Tiffany Marie on March 24, 2012 at 2:58 am

We use the amber teething necklace for my 8th month old. It seems to have really helped her. She has two little teeth, but I would have never guessed she was teething.

  29. Drisana (SoulShineBlog) on March 24, 2012 at 4:33 am

That little strawberry outfit is so adorable!

  30. Michelle on March 24, 2012 at 6:38 am

I’m in love with those outfits! Too bad it isn’t quite as warm here…but maybe I’ll just pick up a cardigan too.

Avery has 3 teeth and a 4th that just poked through. She’s done pretty well so far. Just every now and then, se will let out this burst of crying/screaming but it only lasts a couple minutes. I haven’t had to give any Tylenol yet and used orajel only once. I tried the water filled teethers but she never wanted to hold them because they’re cold. Even when I held them for her, she wasn’t too interested. She really just loves her Sophie. I’d say just let her chew on whatever feels good to her (and is safe). Have bibs handy…the drooling gets out of control once she really starts teething.

    • Michelle on March 24, 2012 at 6:45 am

You may have a while before pain really starts too. Avery did the same thing with putting everything in her mouth and gnawing on it. I thought she was teething but looking back, I think it was a little more exploration and maybe a little teething pain because she did that for about 4 months. Before a tooth comes in and the pain really starts, that area of the gum is typically a little swollen..so that’s really how you’ll know there’s a tooth on the way. (But as always every baby is different.)

  31. Kathy on March 24, 2012 at 7:26 am

Those outfits are adorable! Have you heard of RuffleButts? Those would be so cute on her when she starts crawling around especially.

  32. brianne on March 24, 2012 at 7:41 am

It is must likely too early for her to be teething. My ped told us that babies chew and suck on everything because that’s how they are able to explore and understand the world at this age.

I’m dying with those Mary Jane socks!! They are adorable. Baby clothes are addicting… and usually less than $10 🙂

    • Courtney on March 24, 2012 at 10:52 am

That’s the worst part though… so addicting and seemingly so cheap, until you have a cart full of 20 new outfits that add up to notsocheap! haha 🙂

  39. Jessica@Fruit and Veggie Tales on March 24, 2012 at 2:11 pm

We’ve had lots of all nighters with food allergy problems. With my daughter, I’ll never forget when we were trying to switch her to formula ( I had various health conditions we didn’t know about that kept me from making enough milk) she was about 5 months old. We knew she had a problem with dairy and I had been dairy free since she was 7 weeks but even the lactose free formulas were awful for her, soy was even worse and she was in so much pain that she would just cry all night long. It was terrible. My husband and I would take shifts doing the bicycle legs with her until morning. I rmember falling asleep while sitting up and still rocking her feet up towards her belly to massage it. THankfully we were able to get things figured out and all is well now. With my son, we were great once we let go of gluten but there is one night when he was 10 months that he was sick. He had a fever of 102.6 and just felt pitiful. I just held him skin to skin in the recliner while he slept on me. I hated that he was sick but it was one of my favorite cuddle moments ever! He was so precious. There have been lots of others and with baby number 3 due in September, there will be lots more but those are two that stick out in my mind. ~As far as teething goes….they can ‘teeth’ forever before anything actually comes through OR they can teeth and the next day a tooth pops through. There is such a range of normal with all things baby. So don’t be surprised either way. You can drop children’s echinacea directly on a sore spot and it will soothe the area and take care of inflammation. I usually just increase nursing sessions which seemed to soothe them but I also like cold non-toxic teethies (Green Sprouts has some great ones http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_16?url=search-alias%3Dbaby-products&field-keywords=green+sprouts+teether&sprefix=green+sprouts+te%2Cbaby-products%2C201) as well as Humprhey’s Teething Tablets and Boiron Camilia. Great homeopathic stuff! http://www.humphreysusa.com/personal-teething.htm (dairy free/gluten free) http://www.amazon.com/Boiron-Camilia-Teething-Relief-Count/dp/B005KG7U16/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332612419&sr=8-1 (also dairy free/gluten free if you get the drops)

  40. Gina @ Running to the Kitchen on March 24, 2012 at 2:16 pm

I’m not sure I can agree with that quote at the end, sleeping is pretty much my favorite thing in life! haha

  41. ashley on March 24, 2012 at 3:49 pm

It might not be teething – the drool and mouthing objects is a developmental thing too. My little guy’s been doing that since 2 months and here we are, 3.5 months later with nary a tooth. Apparently their gums get ‘itchy’ a long time before the teeth are imminent too, poor babes!

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2012 at 4:08 pm

      poor things 🙁
my friend that we had lunch with yesterday is a nurse, and said liv is most definitely teething. i didn’t think it was possible so soon, and it could be a while before she actually gets a tooth, but here we go….

  42. Mandy on March 24, 2012 at 5:31 pm

I’m sure someone has said this before, but chomping etc doesn’t need to be teething. It’s a developmental stage all babies go through. EVERYTHING goes into their mouths. Even being crabby, refusing food, drooling and other “teething” symptoms doesn’t have to be teething. Our guy started doing all those around 2 1/2 months.. now we’re at 5 months. No teeth, and even though countless times we’ve thought he was teething, our ped’s confirmed that it’s a stage. Babies gonna be babies. 😉 Good luck!

  43. Ali on March 24, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Hyland Teething Tablets are awesome, as are the amber teething necklaces!
We also froze watermelon and fruit and put them in those mashers contraptions you can buy. It helps a lot.

  44. Dominique on March 24, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Those outfits are adorable! Would people think I was crazy if I bought that strawberry one and just hung onto it for….years? Those sunglasses are also too cute!

The only non-school-related all-nighter I pulled was when Sean and I stayed up all night in the city because of a concert we had gone to. He was in a different city for school and couldn’t get the bus back because it was too late and I had made up an excuse to my parents about why I wasn’t going to be home. For some reason Sean’s idea of hanging around the city all night seemed like a genius idea. We ended up spending a lot of time in a 24-hour coffee shop.

  45. Jen in MN on March 24, 2012 at 10:10 pm

I’m totally biased, with a daughter (almost 3) and a second daughter on the way….but little girl clothes are the BEST! So, so fun – and I’m so excited/lucky I get to use all mine again a second time.

My daughter seemed to be “teething “off & on starting around 3-4 months but we never could tell for sure…..she finally did pop a first tooth through at 7 months. She was a fairly easy teether and didn’t have much trouble with it overall – I am hoping the same for you! Even molars would just “be there” one day, no fanfare or warning. I know teething can be a total b!t@h so I felt really lucky to have dodged that bullet….this time, anyway (-:
