4/30: Things of lately

Potty seat 1 of 1

-I picked up a potty seat for Oliv. It’s not because I want to push the whole the potty training thing (let’s be real, it doesn’t sound like a party), but sometimes she’ll tell me WHILE she’s going, and she speaks so well. I figured at the rate we’re heading, she’ll be saying, “Mama, I need to use to restroom, please” and I won’t be prepared 😉 So I bought this potty seat at Buy Buy Baby and put it in the downstairs guest bathroom with her stepping stool in case she wants to use it. Yesterday, I introduced her to it, making sure to compliment how shiny and cool it is, and emphasizing the fact that it’s just for her. I’m leaving it at that… we’ll see what happens. The best part was when Tom came home from work and asked me if there was a way to remove it. He thought it was a permanent bathroom fixture and that we’d all have to figure out how to take care of business with significantly awkward efforts.

-Many days feel like we do so much, but at the same time, we don’t do anything. We run a couple of errands, have at least one class or play date planned, and the rest of the day, we hang out. We play outside, blow bubbles, draw with chalk, go up and down the slide in our yard, talk Bell for walks, read books, eat and watch some Elmo or Super Why together. All in all, it just feels like we’re hanging out and having fun together. Yesterday, we were walking through Trader Joe’s sharing an enormous apple, her in the Ergo while I pushed the cart, and I kept thinking to myself, “This is the good stuff.” She would put the apple in my mouth and start cracking up each time I took a bite.

-Even though so many other things have changed, the bedroom routine is exactly the same. We put on her bedtime CD (we switched from Jewel to Disney lullabies to change things up), read a bedtime story, turn on the Twilight Turtle thing and say goodnight. My mom got Liv a Twilight Turtle for Christmas -which is awesome because the stars turn off after 45 minutes- but Liv’s is a ladybug. I didn’t notice this until a few weeks ago, since we’d been calling it turtle this entire time. I didn’t think it was a big deal until we were watching something on TV and a ladybug scurried across the screen. “Turtle!!!” Um… so according to Livi, turtles are turtles and ladybugs are… turtles. Trying to fix it.

Chalk

-We should probably get her hair cut, but I’ve been fighting it. It’s not that I think “Omggggg little girls have to have long hair!” (I would actually love to see it all one length at her chin- so cute), but it’s been with her since she’s been born. Some pieces are longer than others, wispier, thinner, but the ends have been there since she came into the world. It makes me sad to cut them off.

-This morning, she was asking for “spicy and chips” aka chips and salsa when she saw the salsa on my egg. “Please.” I gave her a bite, and she loved it.

I’m pretty sure we all wish breakfast served chips and salsa like Poco & Mom’s (an awesome New Mexico-style restaurant here in Tucson) 🙂

Hehe.. I called my parents by their first name when I was a baby since that is what they called each other. My parents were not impressed.

She is SO cute. This entire post made me laugh so hard, mainly at Tom asking if the toilet seat was permanent and her calling a ladybug a turtle. Oh, little kids. 🙂

I love her little Toms! Baby apparel is so adorable.
Every kid I know has the custom name stools, do they hand them out at the hospital or something? (Joking!) There must be a secret mom forum that has a list of adorable baby/toddler needs, like the SkipHop backpacks!

I love that you allow Olivia tastes of typically ‘adult’ things — like salsa or things with more kick to them. Kids need to develop a palate too 🙂

i give her pretty much anything she asks for, except for shellfish, and (obviously) wine and coffee. it’s fun to see what she’ll love! this weekend, she was crunching on almonds with me like they were the best thing ever 🙂

      • Tia on May 1, 2013 at 11:53 am

Is shellfish bad for little munchkins?

        • Fitnessista on May 1, 2013 at 12:22 pm

no i’m just afraid of her being allergic

You have a beautiful family. You guys need to do a family photoshoot with the dogs. You are a family of 5 not 3! That “sister” picture of Livi and Bell is so cutel Livi’s own little protector!

We recently got a potty for the same reason- just to get her familiar with it! I’m anxious to see how potty training goes, but at 19 months, we aren’t there yet.

I also struggle with whether to cut Hailey’s hair or not. It could use a trim to even it all out, but I can’t bring myself to do it!

  20. Haley on April 30, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Oh my word, she is a cutie pie! In that last picture, she looks just like you!

  21. Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome on April 30, 2013 at 8:05 pm

So cute! We introduced the potty seat to our son around 18 months and he really took to it. It started with just sitting on it before bath, then he wanted to go potty so he could do flash cards or read a book. Then about a month later we did the three day potty training method (which I can email you if you’d like) and after a week of some accidents here and there, he was good to go! In big boy underwear by 20 months and honestly, it wasn’t as bad as many people say it is. He just wanted to do it though so I guess he was ready but if Liv is saying she is going or wants to go, I’d give it a shot 🙂

    • Fitnessista on April 30, 2013 at 8:41 pm

yes, i would love that- thank yoU! fitnessista at gmail dot com

  22. Laura on April 30, 2013 at 8:12 pm

She is just totally precious Gina. 🙂

Do you leave the CD playing on repeat all night? We have a bedtime routine in place but I think as we get closer to weaning I might want to change it up a bit. I’m a big believer in the power of music and memory so that might be something I should try in the future. The only things I remember from my high school Spanish class were the songs we sang!

    • Fitnessista on April 30, 2013 at 8:41 pm

      thank you!
nope, we just let it play through once 🙂

  23. A on April 30, 2013 at 9:40 pm

i’d love to hear your experience with potty training when the time comes! my daughter just turned one but i’m already thinking about how to do it!

  24. Sarah on April 30, 2013 at 11:26 pm

Our daughters look like they could be sisters! My little one is nearly two and hasn’t had a haircut yet, for the same reasons basically – and her hair is gorgeous and halfway down her back 🙂 I have no desire nor plans to cut it. Why? It’s healthy and gorg. She gets compliments on it constantly.

“Spicy w/ chips” is adorbs! My oldest daughter, when she was a baby, called chicken drumsticks “Chicken-on-a-handle.” Melt. Also, when we’d send my youngest step-son to time-out, back when he was a tiny little guy, he’d tell us, “You hurt my heart feelings.” Love that boy.

    • Tia on May 1, 2013 at 11:51 am

Hahaha! Chicken on a handle, that’s the best thing I’ve ever heard! <3

  25. Lucie@SwissFitChick on May 1, 2013 at 12:20 am

Oh my goodness, it mad me laugh out loud when you wrote that the pilot thought the potty was a permanent fix. Too funny. I love the stories about you and your daughter. It actually makes me want to have a baby too, which is very new (and I need to hurry up, mid 30’s!!! :-))

  26. PluvK on May 1, 2013 at 2:00 am

Her lashes are unbelievable! She is such a beauty! I feel you on the days that you feel like you did so much, but didn’t do much at all. Whenever my husband and I go on our weekly shopping duty, we come home so beat! When we first got married, I always felt like we should be doing more… but then he said, “You know what? I’m tired, too! Let’s go home and watch Netflix!” Gotta love a man who’s in the same frame of mind as you. 😉

  27. Tia on May 1, 2013 at 11:50 am

She is SO SO gorgeous. Makes me want a baby girl so bad. You should make more of those lol!

  28. Kath on May 1, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Cute cute cute! And lol about Tom

  29. Cassie Vaughn on May 1, 2013 at 1:49 pm

I love that you play her bedtime music and read her a book. I’m a big reader, so I want to read to my kids when I have them, but I hadn’t thought about music.

It seems like you’re doing such a lovely job with her. I’m glad you’re enjoying it so much. It makes me hopeful that I will enjoy my time with my kids too. 🙂

  30. April on May 1, 2013 at 2:50 pm

Such a cute post! Hold out as long as you can on the hair cut cuz she will look like a little ‘lady’ then:= I have a boy, so we HAD to cut his hair and now he looks like a little ‘boy’ at 18 months (sniff). Amazing how the hair cut transforms the little ones:)

  31. Jennifer Jackson on May 1, 2013 at 3:05 pm

    She is such a cutie!!!

  32. Tracy on May 1, 2013 at 3:34 pm

That’s so funny about Tom! ha! He’s seems to be such a good dad and sport that he would likely happily take one for the home team 🙂

Sounds like Liv will potty train like a champ! My daughter was sooooo much easier than her twin brother and older brothers.

  33. Julie on May 1, 2013 at 3:54 pm

I don’t think you’re premature in purchasing a potty chair at all! If she’s telling you when she’s going, it means she’s starting to recognize the feeling/urge & can identify it. She’ll be sitting on that potty chair before you know it! You are right in not pushing the issue, though. And sometimes they’ll start out great & then have a setback, or maybe she’ll do great w/ #1, but #2 notsomuch. My daughter started the process around age 2, & it was almost 10 mos. before we completely transitioned from pullups to big girl panties. And another year before she was dry overnight! 🙁 But every kid is different. (My daughter would wake up in the morning dry, but then lay there & pee in her pullup. Grrr!)

  34. Heidi on May 1, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Boy oh boy! With such an adorable Oliv, what on earth are you going to do when she’s 16?! 😀 Too cute.

  35. Christa on May 2, 2013 at 12:31 pm

I die over that little bracelet. Such a cutie pie 🙂

  36. Liza on May 3, 2013 at 3:18 pm

Just want to let you know that Olivia calling ladybugs and turtles both turtles is very normal and common. She will stop that on her own soon so don’t stress too much about it.

    • Fitnessista on May 3, 2013 at 3:21 pm

haha good to know! it just cracks me up

  37. Angie on May 6, 2013 at 11:00 am

OMGosh im lovvvvving that last pic with her long beautiful lashes and her cute little bracelet! She is going to be a little heartbreaker 😀

  38. Kate Waterbury on May 7, 2013 at 5:22 pm

When my sister in law was pregnant with my nephew, my brother and I decided to go to Build-A-Bear to make something special for him. We were in very goofy moods, and decided it would be hysterical to put a frog sound in the normal teddy bear. When my nephew was two-ish, we realized that he though bears said “ribbit,” instead of “roar.” Oops. No worries, he’s 9 now and has figured it out 🙂

  39. Potatoes and Pilates on May 17, 2013 at 4:12 pm

I can’t believe how quickly she has grown but more than that, I can’t believe how long Olivia’s eyelashes are! Just a little jealous:)
