8/16: Friday faves

-The hour in the morning before it’s scorching hot.

Hammock chair 1 of 1

It’s perfect time to have a cup of coffee, write a blog post or check emails before noodle wakes up. I always love to sit on the patio, even more now that we have the hammock chair. I’m obsessed.

-Walking around on University. I had a free second before meeting up to do final edits, so it was nice to browse through the stores on University right by the U of A campus. It always makes me feel a little nostalgic, and it’s fun to get an idea of what the college kids are wearing. All of the cutout tops, high-waisted SHORT shorts, and flowy pant-jumper-things, ugh, whelp, it made me feel kinda old.

University

-Rose iced tea with fresh mint. The Tulsi rose tea is my favorite, and lately I’ve been enjoying it iced along with some mint from the garden. I’ll brew 2 bags of tea in 10oz of hot water (for about 10 minutes) then add ice and mint. Miss Livi loves it almost as much as I do 🙂

-Caroline! I’m so proud of her. Since we’ve adopted her, we’ve seen tiny improvements along the way. (You can read her story here, but she was a puppy mill mama dog, and traumatized from the abuse.) Sometimes it’s felt like we’ve taken jumps backwards -like when she decided she was going to rattle her crate multiple times at night so we’d take her outside… to chase lizards- but she’s come out of her shell SO much this past week. She’s wagging her tail like crazy, whenever my mom comes to visit she barks and jumps around, and last night she crawled up next to me so I’d pet her. It makes my heart so happy to see that she’s finally starting to become comfortable and realized that we’ll never hurt her.

-An AWESOME Zumba class at BreakOut last night! Sasha and I subbed, and as usual, it was such a blast. Thank you so much to all of you for your support with the DVD this week! We’re doing the final edit tonight (!) and will have them pressed and ready to send out.

-Livi’s new backpack, which I thought would be fun to have for traveling and toting around snacks, toys, etc. She picked it out:

Backpack

-Our costumes for next week’s dance show. We’re doing a hula/Tahitian dance:

Real life.

And the reason why my pinky toe will never be the same.

Hope you have a very happy Friday! We have some fun things happening. It’s my cousin Ashley’s bridal shower tomorrow and we’re going to work on building a home gym.

What are you up to? Any fun fitness events or races?

xoxo

I just started Crossfit and I’m loving it! I’m also loving that backpack! And I too feel ridiculously old when I’m around anyone in their early 20’s. Here I am thinking I’m looking all hot in my maxi skirt, tank top, and sensible cardigan and they roll up in their short lace shorts and crop top.

  2. Amber on August 16, 2013 at 4:17 pm

OMGosh… I felt the same way when my friends and I were walking around town near UC Santa Barbara a few months ago!!!

High-waisted shorts that angled up at the hem to allow for some buttcheek peek-a-boo. And a cropped tank that fell just below the boobs. Every. Single. Girl.

I’m only 28, but WOW…. did I feel OLD and beyond the times. I won’t be caught in any of those “vedgie” shorts (“wedgie” with a “v”… catch my drift? 😉

mmm, that iced tea sounds so refreshing. i just finished a glass of iced green tea; adding fresh mint sounds like a great idea.

hahaha that meme is classic. Because I smash my toes daily -_-

I love Liv’s backpack – and that hammock chair!? What the heck, what hole have I been living in? I didn’t even know such a thing existed!

I love going through Acadia’s Campus here in Nova Scotia when going to work. We have a big Asian population that attends the University, and I love seeing the girls out in their outfits. They always looks so put together. Makes me feel like a slacker 😉

I have been training for the Chicago Marathon and this weekend I have a 17 mile run. I am excited because it is the Air and Water show in Chicago this weekend, so at least I will have some entertainment while running along the lake!

I am so proud of Carloline!! I love that dogs know what hugs and kisses are!

Haha I feel ya on the feeling old when you see what college girls are wearing these days. Oy.

We’re doing a family 5K tomorrow morning for my husband’s work event! Should be fun!

  7. Sara @ LovingOnTheRun on August 16, 2013 at 4:37 pm

I am running a 10k on Sunday and a 14 miler tomorrow, so taking it easy with the hubs tonight. No other plans on the agenda – just see where this beautiful weekend takes us 🙂

Manfriend and I are hiking Mt. Bierstadt…one of the 50+ mountains over 14,000 ft. in CO this weekend. It will be my first 14’er-EEK!

Hiking in the Canadian Rockies tomorrow!! (probably followed by some micro brews and bbq)

  11. Kaylee on August 16, 2013 at 4:48 pm

Hahaha, that meme made me laugh. I just smashed one of my toes 2 days ago and its still completely black and blue! I have to wear heels tomorrow for a bachelorette party – hoping my toe recovers in time!

  12. Jackie on August 16, 2013 at 4:49 pm

So fun! Can’t wait to see the home gym!

  13. Kari on August 16, 2013 at 4:51 pm

Girl that hammock chair is so CUTE! I’ve been thinking about something like that to get to put under my big oak trees in my front yard. LOVE EM!

  14. Madeline @ Food Fitness and Family on August 16, 2013 at 4:53 pm

LOVE the meme! Haha. We had these couches growing up that were KNOWN for breaking toes. I broke 2 and my mom broke hers like 4 times. Good thing those bad boys are GONE. Happy Friday!

  15. Jyl on August 16, 2013 at 4:59 pm

So random information, but, my aunt rescued the cutest dog named Roxy. She is a miniature chi-weenie (so cute) but was also abused. She got a dog trainer, and the trainer told her to never approach the dog directly towards the face or pet her on top of her head. It is less scary for the dog to be pet underneath (on the chin) or on the side. There is tons of animal logic to it but it helped tremendously.

Also, the tea sounds awesome, and you honey’s backpack is too cute!

After reading the caption, I looked quickly at the photo of your costume, and thought to myself, “Well, Gina’s finally lost it… she put a photo of lettuce in a ziploc baggie where she meant to put her costume.” Then I gave you the benefit of the doubt, and looked back at the photo more carefully… what can I say; it’s been a long week.

I’m sure your costume will look beautiful on, but it looks like a baggie of romaine and spinach! 🙂

    • Randi on August 19, 2013 at 11:20 am

I totally thought the same thing! Lol!

  17. Beverly Aragon on August 16, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Between the pic of Caroline and Olivia’s handpicked backback, I’m dying of cuteness overload here 🙂

  18. Helen on August 16, 2013 at 5:33 pm

How do you ever get anything done with so much cuteness around your house!?

  19. Paige@FitNotFad on August 16, 2013 at 5:52 pm

Your daughter’s backpack is adorable! And Caroline….who could say no to those puppy dog eyes?!?! Sooooooooooo sweet!! I’m in Tucson too….the U of A is one of my favorite places to walk around on. The campus is so nice. Also I work out there..best gym EVER!

  20. Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves on August 16, 2013 at 6:33 pm

I love the hammock chair! And it must be such an exciting time with your new DVD coming!
    That meme–spot. on. And hilarious.
The most exciting fitness “event” I’ve done this week is hiking with my brother! It was awesome and my legs were feelin’ it.

  21. Haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine on August 16, 2013 at 6:42 pm

I love, love mint tea. But I have never had rose tea before. I’ve been unloading things into my new apartment and studying! Even though it is only the first week back to college, everything has been so crazy busy already! woowee! (:

  22. Anne @ CandyCrazedrun.wordpress.com on August 16, 2013 at 7:10 pm

I CANNOT handle how cute Liv is with her big ole back pack, ahh it’s just too adorable!

  23. Alex @ Kenzie Life on August 16, 2013 at 7:30 pm

I think it’s so wonderful you have a puppy mill rescue dog! I’ve always wanted to adopt one and we have a big puppy mill rescue center here in Colorado. It seems like they need a little extra TLC and patience, but they are so worthy of it! I’m playing tennis tonight and had a personal best last night when I ran 8 miles 🙂 After a week of Pure Barre workouts and running a few times, I think my body needs a weekend break.

  24. coffeeandjetplanes on August 16, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Oh man that hammock chair looks amazing. I wish I were sitting in one right now.

  25. chelsy on August 16, 2013 at 7:59 pm

Gina, I had no idea Caroline was a victim of the puppy mill. A little over a year ago we rescued our white lab annabelle from a puppy mill. She was also a “momma dog” that they were just going to shoot because she couldn’t have puppies anymore. So very sad. It took her a while to come around to us, especially my dad b/c she had been abused by a man. However, she is still getting there and sometimes still gets scared even though she knows none of us would ever hurt her. She also has seizure which the vet said could be from stress but he put her on some medication and she hasn’t had one since 🙂 She is probably one of the best and sweetest dogs we had ever had, it’s just so terrible that there are people in this world that take advantage of poor, innocent, dogs and use them for profit. 🙁

  26. Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food on August 16, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Your puppy is so sweet and beautiful! I don’t get sappy about much, but dogs just KILL me! So glad she’s settling into her new forever life!

  27. Josie on August 16, 2013 at 8:27 pm

The hammock with a cup of that rose tea = bliss. And Livi’s back pack! I want one! 😉

  28. Gaby - Toronto personal trainer on August 16, 2013 at 8:52 pm

Good job for adopting that cutie. It just break my heart each time I hear news about dogs not given proper care and love they deserve.

  29. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on August 16, 2013 at 8:57 pm

Oh that sounds so relaxing!! Have fun this weekend! I’ve got nothing on the scheduled fitness wise but I do plan on relaxing at the beach!!

  30. Christina @ The Beautiful Balance on August 16, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Ohhh I’ve broken my pinky toe so many times on furniture it hurts to think about. And seriously, will it ever cool off here? Scottsdale is a massive, dusty, sweaty, beast right now!

  31. Alissa on August 16, 2013 at 11:13 pm

Week 6 of my Disney Tinkerbell Half Marathon training! If the weather holds, hoping to hit up a National Park in our new area this Sunday too! Saturday goal is to get my hubby to do my yoga dvd with me. I know he will love it, but it’s like pulling teeth for him to try it 🙂

  32. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on August 17, 2013 at 12:17 am

Hockey playoff game on Sunday! Other than that laying low this weekend – no plans. That hammock chair looks awesome.

  35. Tracy on August 17, 2013 at 1:36 pm

I ordered that same Mason Bar Co cup last week and can’t wait for it to get here!!

  36. Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy on August 17, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Today’s fashion trends make me feel old too! I’m five years older than my youngest sister (I’m 25), and it’s crazy what she can pull off that I cannot (or should not). Why are crop tops back in style…?? It makes it hard for me to know what to wear. I’m in an in-between age, I guess.

  37. Amy @ www.funfoodiefamily.wordpress.com on August 17, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Cute backpack! So glad your doggie is doing well. She is too cute! Those eyes!!!!

  38. TITLE Boxing Club Ann Arbor on August 17, 2013 at 9:23 pm

I love everything about this post! Need to make/get myself a jar cup like yours..did you make it or buy it?
Second your daughter’s backpack is adorable. Third, hope your doggy does well. Fourth, house shoes will solve your problem of stubbed toes! haha it’s a bad habit of mine, I could be across the room and it jumps out at me. Good luck!

  39. Sara Lake on August 17, 2013 at 11:19 pm

That is so wonderful about Caroline. Three of my cats were ex-strays and it took them a while before they got used to being welcome. They still bolt when ‘stranger danger’ hits. I wonder so much about their histories, the crazy things they do. One will NOT get on the bed and if I put her on there she (first, fights me all the way to the bedroom), growls, hisses, runs off and refuses to come inside for the rest of the day. Deep trauma of some description.. I suspect she was always chased out of the bedroom in her old house.

Bahahaha omg that meme MUST have been meant for me! Love it. Also, I will have to be on the look-out for a hammock chair – I used to have one growing up, and would always read in it during the summers. Would love to have one for my front porch!
