A marble milestone

Hey guys! Hope you’ve had a great day! I just got back from seeing The Proposal with Jeni and Ashley and it was wonderful. I usually don’t laugh out loud during movies and I was giggling the whole time. It was muy bueno 😉

I spent a majority of the day in cleaning machine mode. I did a bunch of nit-picky little things that make the casa feel soooo good, like polishing the granite and stainless steel stuff, taking everything off the countertops and cleaning, doing the microwave, and usual stuff like dusting, vacuuming, etc. After all of that biznass, I went to the pool to chill and read for a while 🙂

When I got back in, I was ready for lonchi so I made the pasta version of Natalia Rose’s Suddenly St. Tropez salad

007

Spiralized zucchini and beet, grape tomatoes, sweet onion, basil, oregano, balsamic, sea salt and goat cheddar.

All mixed up:

009

It was pretty glorious, to say the least!

Atfer lonchi, I met Jeni at the gym to do Day 6 of this week’s Shape Up plan. My legs were sore from teaching yesterday, so I gave them a day off and did biceps and triceps.

Came back to the casa and checked on the babies, got ready and met the girls at Pita Pit for dinner.

010

I got the usual hummus pita on wheat with romaine, tomatoes, onions, olives, cucumber, jalapenos, mushrooms and hot sauce

011

Rocked my face off. I love me some Pita Pit!

After the ‘pit’, we went went to the movie (which I highly recommend.. it reminded me a lot of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, which is one of my favorites) and then Jeni and I hit up Marble Slab.

I did something I haven’t done in probably 5 years.

012

That’s REAL ice cream right there—not nonfat, not frozen yogurt, the real thing. Since I lost the majority of my weight, I’ve always had the froyo or nonfat yogurt. I’d take bites of the pilot’s real ice cream, but would never get one for myself because it reminded me of the days when I was 40 lbs heavier and would eat regular ice cream like it was my job. No joke, I hit up DQ a few times each week. So for me, real ice cream = me being at my previous weight and feeling lethargic and self conscious.

You guys know that once a week I have a “treat meal” where I’ll eat food that I normally would not want to eat. For that meal, anything is fair game but ice cream has always been a different story for me because I used to have it so often. I’ve never seen a big deal with having real ice cream, but chose not to because it’s something that I did quite often when I was at an uncomfortable stage in my life. So I’ve stuck with the froyo and nonfat stuff over the past handful of years.

Tonight, I figured I could try having a smaller REAL ice cream instead of the large frozen yogurt, like I normally would. The satisfaction difference was remarkable. The real ice cream was super creamy (and chocolaty!) and I felt more content after my kid’s size than I would have felt with the large frozen yogurt. I don’t want you guys to get the wrong idea about what I’m trying to say (and start the anonymous comments flowing), because I never told myself I “couldn’t” have the real ice cream—I just didn’t want to eat it. Tonight, I wanted the real ice cream. So I ate it, and I liked it. A lot. That is all 😀

Well it’s time for me to hang out with the pilot since it’s a rare occasion that we’re home at the same time—he’s been working a ton this week.

Hope you all have a wonderful night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to do: Meet me back here tomorrow morning for a AMAZING GIVEAWAY!!! Get excited, it’s a good one 😉

I've been reading for quite awhile and I find your lifestyle very inspirational! I LOVE froyo, but I completely agree with you on the ice cream thing. When I eat a child's size serving of frozen custard or full fat ice cream, it's like a hefty snack and I'm legitimately not hungry for awhile afterwards. Great blog, keep up the amazing work!

Hi! I just want to say that I find your honesty in your posts just refreshing. I have been reading your blog for a while now, but last year my schedule was just chaotic (I'm still a student), and I just never got around to commenting regularly. However, I've definitely gone through some of my own weight issues/experiences, and I've finally started a blog of my own. Since my summer internship is just crazy hours and really formal, I can't turn it into a food blog just yet (can't take pictures at my desk..), but I really really would love to once I'm back in school! It's been my dream for a while! For now though, it is just my musings and reflections on my past, and my journey towards a healthy outlook towards life. If you have time, please visit! I know you're busy though 🙂 Anyhow, thank you for being an inspiring writer!

    Hey Gina!
Love your lunch. Glad you liked the proposal. I'm dying to see it but waiting it out until I can see it with the bf. Sounds great! Pita pit sounds super yummy. I have to agree with the anonymous comment above, I find you a total inspiration 🙂
I love me some froyo, but real ice cream is definitely a good treat to have. You do feel more satisfied with less, and it's so good. Haha! Have a wonderful night!

Oh and for some reason it wouldn't let me comment with my real wordpress identity, so I had to use my old one. (I'm now at http://www.havefaith4ever.wordpress.com)

So glad you had a good time! I'm dying to see the proposal (helloooo Ryan Reynolds!)… it's good to know it's worth going!

And I agree on the ice cream! There are times that I get fro-yo instead… but when I get the "real thing"… the satisfaction level is totally different… and makes it all worth it!

  6. heartswholefoods on July 9, 2009 at 11:37 pm

I loved how to lose a guy in 10 days (chick flick gal over here!) so I will have to see the proposal too 😀
    Thanks for the rec, gina!

Oooh pita pit sounds so yummy right now.

Good for you for indulging in what you enjoy (in moderation of course!). Love that!

  7. eatingbirdfood on July 9, 2009 at 11:47 pm

Woo-hoo for real icecream. I never get the full fat version of icecream either and last time I went to Ben and Jerry's I did the same thing! And, the oatmeal cookie chunk was totally worth it!

How to Lose a Guy is in my top 5 favs – I love it!

Can't wait to see what the giveaway is.

    **Happy almost Friday!

Hey! I've been reading your blog for a while, and LOVE it! It's cool to find people that eat like me! I've even just started my own food/healthy living blog this week! Anyway, I'm totally with you on the froyo vs. real ice cream thing. I've got pretty much the same thing going with the ice cream, I'm scared to let myself eat real ice cream because when I was 10 lbs. heavier and out of shape, I used to eat it ALL THE TIME! But I had the froyo from marble slab the other day and it was very disappointing, I was wishing I had just gotten the good stuff in the kid size. Next time I will for sure because it's worth it.

  9. carolinebee on July 9, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Oh man, you know i love my fro yo…and it's probably for the same EXACT reasons that you stated…ice cream conjures up overdose memories 😀 I really hope no one gives you any crap…bc there are SO many of us here that have NOT permitted ourselves to eat certain foods like ice cream for so long, that seeing people like you listening to your body and "treating" yourself right, is really inspiring and gives hope to people that are struggling. Hope that made an inkling of sense!

  10. glidingcalm on July 10, 2009 at 12:30 am

    Hi Mama G!!!

Wahoo! So glad you enjoyed real ice cream!! I definitely have certain foods that I have avoided for similar reasons as you, and hurray for you getting over that!!
    I love you!!

That raw lonchi looks amazing. I seriously need to come over and have you cook chia pudding and raw meals for me!! I also need to just suck it up and buy a spiralizer!!!!! Your raw pasta is soo "fine" and gorgey!!!

And omg hurray for PITA PIT and freakin Indian food. I pass this Indian restaurant on the way home from school everyday and totally think of you AND crave it.

Love you! Have fun with the pilot!!

I was cracking up when I saw the first comment was "anonymous." I'm sure you are all freaked out like I was yesterday when you have a comment to approve.

I just love you, Gina. You need to come here and make me that salad and then go out for ice cream with my girls!!!

  12. Balance, Joy and Delicias! on July 10, 2009 at 5:45 am

sometimes real thing is really good…and we need smaller portions of it to get satisfied! So glad that you did it and felt great afterward! 🙂

  13. Lauren on July 10, 2009 at 7:22 am

Good for you hun! You totally deserve some real ice cream and I am so happy to see that you treated yourself! 🙂

We are not expected to be perfect and trust me, God would not have put ice cream on this earth if he didn't intend for us to eat some every now and then.

Take care hun and have a wonderful Friday!

  14. VeggieGirl on July 10, 2009 at 7:31 am

So glad that the movie was enjoyable!!

Gina, that ice cream looks incredible – hell yes for the REAL stuff 😀

It's great that you are yourself Gina, that is so important to you and you only!

I really feel ya on this post. Sometimes it seems like I have tricked myself into liking the low-fat versions of certain foods, because I feel like if the healthier option is there, I should choose it. Major props to stepping a little outside of the comfort zone and showing yourself how satisfying a little bit of the good stuff can be 🙂 Thanks for The Proposal review, I'm dying to see it!

  17. Ada on July 10, 2009 at 8:19 am

Good for you for eating some real ice cream! Sometimes you just need the real thing:)

  18. whitsgettingfit on July 10, 2009 at 8:20 am

I want to see that movie really bad! Thanks for the review 'How to lose a guy' is one of my favorites too.

    Yay for ice cream!

  19. runjen on July 10, 2009 at 8:37 am

Glad you got the real deal. Sometimes you just gotta do it. I agree. I always feel more satisfied after a small serving of the real thing versus more of fro yo or the light stuff.

  20. Mrs. LC on July 10, 2009 at 8:47 am

I can't wait to see that movie, and I can't wait until I move and there's a Pita Pit (and so much more) by me!!! 1 month! 🙂

I'm so happy for you that you went with the "real deal" – not only was it good for you to see how far you've truly come (as we all know, this obviously doesn't mean you're jumping back on the DQ train several times a week), but it's also good for many of your readers to see in fact how real you are. 🙂 Much love!

  21. Erica on July 10, 2009 at 8:50 am

Hi chica- what a great day! You know I love me some pita pit too- that place is just the best!! I'm not sure how they make something you could make at home taste SO much better, but they do! Glad you were able to enjoy the ice cream and feel very satisfied after. I must say…its been forever since I last had real ice cream.

  22. paige@ Running Around Normal on July 10, 2009 at 8:59 am

I need to give my house a good scrub down too. Marble slab is wonderful! Sometimes you just need some of the real thing every now and then.

  23. Anna on July 10, 2009 at 9:32 am

Yes yes yes! I totally agree with you on the ice cream topic. Every now and then, a little bit of the real stuff is 10x better than frequent servings of lots of the low-fat stuff! Totally worth it. Life is too short!

I wish we had pita pit up here in MA! It looks so good!

  24. brandi on July 10, 2009 at 9:43 am

that ice cream looks fabulous – i'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  25. britt on July 10, 2009 at 9:44 am

definitely go for a small portion of the good stuff! i'm so happy that you were able to cut off the association that ice cream represents an unhappy time in your life and finally be able to enjoy it. that's very similar to what i've been dealing with lately too but with people rather than food.

and that pita looks so yummy! i wish we had pita pit here in dallas.

  26. allijag on July 10, 2009 at 9:49 am

I used to have a Pita Pit 2 minutes from where I lived (in college) – and now there isn't one around – I think the closest is 2 hours away! You and Jenna always torture me with pictures of Pita Pit – why do hate me?! 😛

  27. K from ksgoodeats on July 10, 2009 at 9:50 am

YAHOO for the real ice cream 🙂 I'm glad you enjoyed yourself!!

I love deep cleaning the house – it just feels so much more put together! Hmmm…I'm thinking I need to add Pita Pit to my To Eat list!

  28. Rose on July 10, 2009 at 9:52 am

Thanks for sharing this with us! I used to be the same way about ice cream, and it was only in recent years (months really) that I realized how much more satisfying a small bit of real ice cream can be. I bet the calorie/fat difference probably evens out – When I eat fro-yo, I tend to eat muuuuch more of it.

    Thanks again for sharing!!

  29. Katie on July 10, 2009 at 10:11 am

I've never been to a Pita Pit…I don't even think I've ever seen one. I will be on the lookout for one! Good for you for having the ice cream. I think you deserved it! Thank you for your openness and honesty!

  30. Peanut Butter Swirl on July 10, 2009 at 11:22 am

I wish there was that pita pit near me :\

I love that you ate what you were craving. I agree with you – when you give into your cravings you can have just a small amount because its what you really want and your truly happy eating it 😀

  31. Dori on July 10, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I agree with you. Sometimes a small amount of the real thing goes SO much farther than a large amount of the "healthier" version! Something I am just starting to really appreciate myself.

  32. Sky Says on July 10, 2009 at 2:52 pm

What do you use to do the spiral zucchini and stuff? It looks just like pasta!

  33. heyitstay on July 10, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Go you!! It's hard to go from weight loss mode/ideas to enjoying good treats in moderation. I agree, it's still hard for me to enjoy things like that (and pizza, other treats, etc) even if I'm craving them. Sure, I'll have bites or nibbles. But I'll never actually serve myself a whole serving or piece that is MINE to eat at. Great attitude!

  34. Stephanie P on July 10, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Your thing with ice cream is how I am with chips…It is was I ate all the time when I was 25 lbs heavier…I just can't and don't usually want to eat them now.

Real ice cream > froyo any day
