Afternoon Pick-Me-Ups

Hi friends! How’s your day going? Hope it’s been lovely.

One haircut later, and I feel like a new girl 🙂

Props to the madre for taming my unruly mane <3

Today has been a little all over the place, busy and productive per usual. I had a glorious breakfast with a good friend before ninja-kicking the to-do list, but started to majorly drag this afternoon.
As tempted as I was to go to Ike’s for a rice milk latte, I went next door to Whole Paycheck for a green juice instead.

juice

[green giant: spinach, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, kale, ginger]

With some dark chocolate –I had to help save endangered species, right?- it was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up 😀

Since I’m going to be Zumba-shaking my booty when the Pilot gets home from work, I wanted dinner to be waiting for him.

Salad in the fridge

Alexia fries in the freezer (all he has to do is put them on a cookie sheet and bake)

fries

fresh rolls from Whole Paycheck

rolls

and pulled chicken in the slow cooker.

(If the recipe comes out as great as it smells, I’ll post it in the am)

Snack time:

smoothie

I’m off to do the Zumba thang, but I’ll see ya in the morning 🙂

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: What’s your favorite afternoon pick-me-up?

Usually for me, a small snack (with carbs and protein), power nap or square of dark chocolate will do the trick 🙂

mmm, I LOVE the blueberry chocolate. AND helping endangered species 😀

  2. Lindsay@LivingLindsay on August 16, 2011 at 9:07 pm

I love slow cooker recipes and hope it turns out yummy so I can have the recipe! 🙂 My afternoon pick me up is usually a smoothie: almond milk, spinach, cacao nibs, frozen banana, flax, chia seeds, cinnamon, stevia. Yum!! I’ll sometimes add SunWarrior to the mix, too 🙂

I’m jealous of your lovely locks! Your hair must grow like crazy since you’re getting it cut all the time – it looks great!

    Apple with peanut butter!

Or fro yo. Usually fro yo. ; )

  6. Kristin @ STUFT Mama on August 16, 2011 at 9:21 pm

I love apples with some peanut butter and cottage cheese dip! I’ve also been cravingsome serious coke zeros lately that I’m not happy about. One of these days I need to go cold turkey. You’re impressive. The nights I teach classes I just leave frozen dinners in the freezer for the husband. Oops. I need to work on that too! 🙂

  7. Madeline (Food Fitness & Family) on August 16, 2011 at 9:22 pm

Your hair looks great! My afternoon pick-me-up is a snack or power nap too. The further I get into my pregnancy the less energy I have so power naps have been GREAT!

  8. Kate on August 16, 2011 at 9:29 pm

endangered species 88% is my fav chocolate and definitely green juices or smoothies do the trick!

  9. Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine on August 16, 2011 at 9:32 pm

I love power naps…and/or a quick trip to the gym!! Works every time!

  10. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats on August 16, 2011 at 9:34 pm

You are such a sweetheart for making sure dinner is easily ready for the pilot! I need to find an afternoon pick me up. Usually I find myself bored and snacking unfortunately.

  11. kaila @ healthy helper! on August 16, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I always need an afternoon snack! Today’s was a green monster with shredded wheat + carrots with sunflower seed butter! I guess my snack is more like a meal compared to just a pick me up LOL!

  12. lindsey on August 16, 2011 at 9:43 pm

I definitely need to start a slow cooker night on Tuesdays – I teach Zumba on Tuesday evenings and my husband has a late class. We’ve been eating out too much!

I ordered the Jack Lalanne juicer and can’t WAIT for it to come in! We don’t have any places in the area that do green juices (they look at me funny when I even ask) and I find myself craving them. My general afternoon pick-up is kombucha trinity flavor. <3

  13. Namaste Gurl on August 16, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Green juice is the best refreshing morning or afternoon treat, but no fuel for me. I treat it as I do water, but I do love it 🙂

  14. Brittany (Eating Bird Food) on August 16, 2011 at 9:49 pm

I like having veggies with hummus, a larabar, greek yogurt or a smoothie as an afternoon pick me up.

Can’t wait to see you in a few days!!

  15. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on August 16, 2011 at 9:50 pm

When I’m stuck at work all day at my desk, a quick walk outside usually does the trick!

  16. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on August 16, 2011 at 10:08 pm

I think it’s awesome that you help the Pilot with his dinners when you’re going to be gone. I do the same thing for Scott and Skylar when I go to work. I know they could probably fend for themselves, but the caretaker in me wants to make SURE they got their veggies and a remotely balanced meal in.

The fact that you’re still teaching, working, cooking for your man, clearly pregnancy has not slowed you down.

    Your hair looks lovely!

  17. s on August 16, 2011 at 10:11 pm

my favorite afternoon pick me up is probably chocolate.

  18. Cat on August 16, 2011 at 10:11 pm

That’s cute 🙂 does he get a note with explanation or just know to check the blog? 😉

  19. Suzi @ Confessions of a Fitness Instructor on August 16, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Love the hair cut! I’m in desperate need of trim myself.

My fav pick me up mid-afternoon is some dark chocolate or a cool refreshing drink like your green juice. Naps hit the spot too though 😉

  20. Morgan @ Some Kind of Sunshine on August 16, 2011 at 10:13 pm

I love leaving coffee that is leftover in the pot and serving it over milk and ice with a little stevia and vanilla extract. Little jolt of caffine always does the trick.

Gina, I noticed you don’t have a Pinterest. I feel like you would fall in love with it! Perfect for organizing all your baby girl wish lists 🙂

  21. Allison @ Food for Healing on August 16, 2011 at 10:18 pm

my afternoon pick-me up is usually a bowl of blueberries or a smoothie. its tasty and good for me! sometimes there might be a piece of chocolate added in there too 😛

  22. Jen @familyfoodfitnessandfun on August 16, 2011 at 11:03 pm

Definitely love my afternoon smoothie! It’s a chocolate one with spinach, flax seeds, and peanut butter added in…YUM!

  23. Sylvia on August 16, 2011 at 11:30 pm

The juice sounds tasty! I keep boiled eggs on hand for quick snacks. (They don’t smell so great though 🙂 ) Other pick me ups include apples or rice cakes with almond butter. Sometimes though, that cup of coffee is just necessary.

  24. Shayla @ The Good Life on August 16, 2011 at 11:31 pm

A nice refreshing, creamy cup of fro yo always does the trick for me for an afternoon pick me up! 🙂

  25. megan on August 16, 2011 at 11:34 pm

i dont believe in power naps… i roll w a 2 hour nap in all of its glorious perfection! they are so rare but when they happen its like the heavens are shining down on me!

  26. Ali @ Peaches and Football on August 16, 2011 at 11:42 pm

How do you like rice milk compared to almond milk?

Hope the chicken turned out. I am always looking for crockpot recipes!

  27. Sara K on August 16, 2011 at 11:50 pm

Whole paycheck is true indeed 😉 My afternoon pick up is getting out of the house for some sunshine- just to get out whether to run errands, go window-shop at the outdoor mall, or go on a walk

  28. Casey Thomas on August 17, 2011 at 1:27 am

My energy is actually off the charts all day long but I love having a big smoothie with avocado, carob powder, greens, vanilla, cinnamon and stevia in the afternoon with LOTS of ice. It’s like an ice cream shake and soooo freaking good 🙂

  29. Sara on August 17, 2011 at 6:35 am

Sadly, you can judge the stressfulness of my afternoon by the number of espresso cups that accumulate on my desk. I know.. I’m trying, REALLY. The best thing I’ve found for a little boost, if I’m being moderate with the kaffe is a handful of cacao beans and dried apricots. That’s also got a lot of magnesium to calm me. Green tea is also good, but I need to eat something with it or it makes me feel kind of ill.

  30. Paige @ Running Around Normal on August 17, 2011 at 7:45 am

    Hair looks great Gina!
How nice of you to have dinner all ready for the Pilot:D Although I have to say it’d probably even be a stretch for Shane to put those fries on a pan and bake them 😛 haha!

    • Fitnessista on August 17, 2011 at 11:01 am

he definitely didn’t end up having fries or salad. he ate chicken out of a bowl. hahah

  31. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on August 17, 2011 at 8:05 am

I want your juice! We just got a new WF here and I was really hoping it would have a juice bar, but no such luck! 😛

My favourite afternoon pick me up is some Greek yogurt with granola.

  32. Jessica@Fruit and Veggie Tales on August 17, 2011 at 8:25 am

Did you know parsley is a pregnancy no-no??? I’m sure it was fine the one time, maybe a couple…..but all my juicing/remedy books say to stay away from parsley when pregnant. Anyway, jut wanted to pass the info along in case you didn’t know! Have a great day! 🙂

  33. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on August 17, 2011 at 9:17 am

Definitely a snack! That totally plows me through the afternoon.

I love that you had dinner all ready for the hunny when he gets home. So cute!

  34. Neha on August 17, 2011 at 9:48 am

    Such a timely post!!
I was just fretting about finding a good afternoon snack yesterday. I can’t drink coffee or sugary drinks coz it worsens my acne and I really can’t find a good substitute at work. There’s also nothing in the neighborhood that I can drive to.

  35. Aly on August 17, 2011 at 10:07 am

I LOVE that you call it Whole Paycheck. Nice post 🙂

  36. Andrea P. on August 17, 2011 at 10:12 am

I just bought that dark chocolate the other day too for my afternoon pick me up! The turtle on the front sold me lol so dang cute.

  37. Claire on August 17, 2011 at 10:16 am

Fresh juice or a green monster smoothie are my favorite afternoon pick me ups! They give me a real jump in energy!

  38. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on August 17, 2011 at 10:17 am

I really hope that pulled chicken recipe appears tomorrow… I would love a new slow cooker recipe to add to my recipe binder!

I have a pulled pork recipe I’m trying on Sunday… should be delish! 🙂
