All-American

Hi guys! Happy Monday! Hope your morning is going well <3

We ended up celebrating the end of Lent by having dessert first last night. My favorite lesson that I’ve learned from my family is: always eat dessert first 🙂 Life is short, so why not, eh?

Last night’s sweet of choice was the My My Cherry Pie from Philip McCluskey’s book, Raw Food, Fast Food.

I made a mini version for me -I’m trying not to go buck wild with the fats since I’m slightly immobile- and made a larger one for the pilot.

cherry pie

So cute… and SO delicious 😀

I put them in the freezer so the top layer was almost like a sorbet– the bottom layer was like a crunchy macaroon. Amazing. And like I said, they took me about 5 minutes to make… no dehydration or crazy magician tricks necessary.

Next we had our dinner:

Meat and veg for the pilot

meat and veg

(Organic sundried tomato chicken sausage with mushrooms, bell pepper, onion and roasted asparagus)

My “meat” (portobello ‘shrooms, asparagus and onion roasted with fig vinegar, garlic powder and sea salt)

mushroom

Veg

kale salad

Massaged kale salad with 1/8 avocado, rice vinegar, cayenne, lime juice and sea salt.

It was a fun spin on an all-American meal: meat, veg and cherry pie. It was pretty face-rocking 😀

We chilled around the casa and watched Up in the Air – ‘twas good. ‘Twas even better because well, the Clooney is in it 😉

I’m off to meet the girls for some iron-pumping and then have a doctor’s appt (nothing’s wrong, just a check-up). I’ll also be calling the physical therapist to get in some knee seshes, just to make sure all is bueno.

Have a great day <3

I have a plate that says, Life is short…eat dessert first! Definitely my philosophy, if not eat dessert first, middle, and last 🙂

  7. Jenny on March 29, 2010 at 10:01 am

Haha when I was reading this post I wwas wondering if I had mistakenly read and commented on a previous about lent!

Iblove dessert first:) life is too short!

  8. Jenny on March 29, 2010 at 10:06 am

Hey Gina! Just wanted to say I read your post about your Lent experience, and I feel like you still “succeded” in learning an important aspect of the season and purpose of Lent. It’s not about being perfect in the goal you set for yourself, but about how you experience the journey and learn about yourself. So you had to make some adjustments, I think knowing what you needed to do is an accomplishment in itself. 🙂

I loved your post about how the giving up sweets (even healthy ones) made you turn to other stuff like coffee and gum. So interesting. Your approach to food is really inspring, I love how you have healthy treats every day and one indulgent treat each week. Seems like a great balance. Not too mention you eat some awesome (face-rocking?) looking food every day. Keep it up!

You dinner looked SO good! I’m excited to read Philip McCluskey’s book. I looked for it at Border’s yesterday with no luck. I hope the DR’s appt goes well and that your knees will be cooperating with your cardio sessions soon. Have a great day!

I agree with you about the dessert with one exception: Sometimes it’s worth it to just skip the dinner altogether and go wild on dessert. Not the healthiest thing to do, but when a rich molten chocolate cake is calling my name I can’t even think about dinner.

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2010 at 11:38 am

hahah you’re totally right. sometimes dinner is just a hassle 😉

    Hey chica,

Interesting study with rats and fat addiction. I think we all knew they were addicting (Hello, “Super Size Me”) but that the addiction is at similar intensity to cocaine is crazy.

    Have a great day!

Hello, i often read your blog but have never commented (creeper?). anyway i was going to suggest swimming to you as an alternative to running during this recovery time, as there is virtually no impact on your knees, but it sounds like you’re not all that keen! as a running instructor, i often recommend water running to injured runners, and know many people who have had success with it. many people where a floatie belt, and then literally just run through the water. its super slow, but is still a great workout if you’re itching for some cardio, and your head is about water the whole time so you can chat with a bud. anyway something to think about, good luck in your recovery!

    • Molly @fuelherup on March 29, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Water jogging and swimming are what my track team uses to recovery from injuries, even those as serious as stress fractures! No need to lose fitness during recovery that way 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2010 at 1:47 pm

thank you! i’ll need the floatie.. i can’t swim, hahah
and you’re not a creeper at all- thanks for saying hi 🙂

Very American indeed:D That “cherry pie” looks amazing, doll!

  25. Catherine on March 29, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Question about your “massaged kale”… is that just the way it sounds? Do you squish it with your hands or something, and if so, how come?

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2010 at 1:46 pm

yep, you squish it with your hands. it breaks down the kale, softens it and gives it a cooked feel 🙂

  26. Melissa S. on March 29, 2010 at 2:00 pm

I like to eat my sweets first because it helps me from eating too many after the savory part of the meal!

Yum, Cherry pie! Dessert first? That is my kind of meal =D

My My Cherry Pie looks so good. I’m intrigued. …Would Philip be willing to let you post the recipe? If we all like it as much as you do, it would be a good incentive for us to want to buy his book. 🙂

Maybe I’m completely lost in a case of the Mondays but I could not find your email anywhere! I would love to meet up in O-town…any plans as of yet??

  31. Ellen on March 29, 2010 at 4:12 pm

YUM! I would eat dessert first, only I usually HAVE to end a meal with something sweet, in which case, I’d end up eating it TWICE!

    A few things:
    1) thanks for the deal on the foam roller, been using it at home instead of just when I am at the gym. 🙂

    2) where did you get the glass straw?

    Thanks!!

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2010 at 7:00 pm

i’m so glad you’re loving the foam roller!
the glass straw is from glass dharma and they sell them online 🙂

I love the part of the Fatty Foods article where the scientist says we make our food very similar to cocaine nowadays.
Wow. If that doesn’t make you want to run for the “real” food, I don’t know what will.
Great link! 🙂 And I have my my cherry pie envy.

  35. Kelly on March 29, 2010 at 5:07 pm

That dessert looks really good! I still haven’t tried kale chips and I am dying to! I keep seeing them everywhere in the blog world!

  36. Carrie on March 29, 2010 at 5:30 pm

Hey Gina, I know this sounds really dumb, but could you do a post on WHERE in the store you find all your good eats?? And which store you buy them at? I have no idea where maca powder, chia seeds, or mesquite powder is at the store although I was barely able to find Nutritional Yeast in the bulk section at whole foods. I know I could probably just ask the people at Whole Foods, but sometimes they don’t even know and I already annoy them enough. 🙂 he he. Thanks!!!

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2010 at 6:59 pm

i haven’t bought chia or mesquite at the health stores or whole foods- i can’t find them either! i’ll order those online
maca is by the supplements and vitamins – by the women’s health stuff in pill form or a pouch

      • Carrie on March 30, 2010 at 10:24 am

        Great, thanks!!!

  37. Samantha on March 29, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Your description of the book + this recipe had me sprinting over to amazon.com to add the book to my cart (along with maca since I can’t get it on island). I <3 anything cherry!

I'd like to chime in with some of the others and say what a wonderful workout deep water running can be, especially when you're rehabbing an injury. When I was 7 months pregnant with my 2nd son, I separated my pubic bone and could barely walk, much less run/ellip/etc, so I turned to the pool. It helped keep me mobile and active. The float belt will keep you plenty bouyant…and you can work on your tan!

    • Fitnessista on March 29, 2010 at 6:58 pm

awesome… i really need to do it!

  38. lucie on March 29, 2010 at 11:18 pm

    Hey Gina,

Love your blog and admire your honest, confident, and positive personality! I enjoy Kale and have added it to smoothies and roasted it in the oven, but I was hoping you might be able to explain what you mean by “massaging” it…
