All-time Favorite Fitness Tips

After reading your amazing thoughts on the recent organic studies, I thought it would be fun to talk about the BEST health and fitness tips. Since it’s been a journey for me to get into my groove with healthy eating and working out -I’m still learning and changing things as time goes on- a few of the things I’ve learned have stuck with me and helped me and encouraged long-term success.

My Favorite Fitness Tips

-Create a plan. It’s much easier to take steps to achieve goals if there’s an action plan in place. Taking time each week to think about what classes I’m taking/teaching, prep some meals, and grocery shop makes healthy eating and fitness more attainable during the week. Recently, I started posting my fitness schedule and recipes I’ll be making that week.

healthy groceries

-Look at the forest, not the trees. Assess your improvement over time, and if you have a day where things don’t go as planned, just hop back on the wagon as soon as you can. What you do in the grand scheme of things matters so much more than a 1-day slip-up. Focus on the big picture and your long-term goals as motivation.

Agua caliente

-Quality over quantity. I’m going to go ahead and say that two-a-day workouts are unnecessary. It’s a quick recipe for burnout, and a waste of time unless you’re training for a major athletic event. If you push yourself while you’re at the gym, a great workout shouldn’t take more than an hour, including cardio and weights. This is one that really held true to me after having Liv. Since time at the gym is shorter and less frequent, I make the most of my workouts.

Lunge and lift

-Good shoes make a huge difference! It was so hard for me to initially start running because my feet would hurt. After getting my stride checked at a local running store and fitted with new shoes, running felt so much better. A lot of the running and workout gadgets are overrated, but it’s important to have quality shoes that are in good condition.

I asked some of my blog friends if they’d mind sending in their favorite health/fitness tips, and here’s what they had to say:

Fitness tips from fitness bloggers

Thank you so much to Tina, Kath, Julie, Angela, Caitlin, Courtney, Michelle and Lori for the awesome tips (and to Katy for the beautiful graphic)!

What’s the one piece of fitness/health advice you would share with a fitness or clean eating newbie?

Hope you have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya later!

xoxo

I love the new design, it looks great 🙂

I guess my tip would be that the little things truly do add up. Walk whenever you can, never use lifts or escalators etc. Also, balance is key. I try to aim for 90/10 with my diet, after all, life is for living 🙂

I love the new look Gina! It’s so fresh and clean looking!

My one piece of advice would be that whatever you do to stay fit and eat healthily, only do things you love! I don’t force myself to go on the stair machine because I know I don’t like it and I wouldn’t have a good workout. Likewise I don’t make myself eat eggs for breakfast, even though they’re a super healthy breakfast food, because I know I prefer sweeter breakfasts. Don’t do something just because everyone is. Only do what you love, and you’ll be much more likely to stick with your habits!

My tip would be to eat real food and fill that plate up with tons of veggies!

    LOVE the new look!

  26. Claire@NavigatingNorth on September 5, 2012 at 11:27 am

First let me say, I love the new blog layout! If you were going for a cleaner look like you said, you certainly got it…it’s beautiful! Much more user friendly, too for me 🙂

I started blogging June of 2011, and since then I have learned SO MUCH about fitness, food and the healthy living community and now I am starting to come into my own little “niche” I think.

One tip I would tell a newbie would be to take it slow, research, research, research and make educated decisions about your health and fitness. While it’s nice to see bloggers sharing ideas, we have to remember that each of our bodies are unique and one plan for fitness and eating is not always a “one-size fits all”. And I would tell them they are in for a lot of FUN in a GREAT community!

  27. Jordan @ Whimsical Desperation on September 5, 2012 at 12:13 pm

I love the new look! Very clean and easy to navigate while still retaining that spark of pink!

Thanks for the tips. They’re good things to remember. 🙂

  28. Caty on September 5, 2012 at 12:54 pm

Love the new look, it’s great! Only thing I would add is buttons at the bottom of posts to go to the previous and newer post — I like reading through the comments, and having to go back to the main page to read the next entry is a bit annoying.

    • Fitnessista on September 5, 2012 at 3:53 pm

that’s a good idea- i can get that changed over the next couple of days

  29. LindsayH on September 5, 2012 at 2:29 pm

These are great tips, but I would have liked to see input from someone who goes to a regular 9-5 job. Just to mix it up a little and get a different perspective.

    • Fitnessista on September 5, 2012 at 3:50 pm

i work 9-5, but only 3 days a week. that’s a great point, i should have thought of that

  30. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on September 5, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Your new blog layout looks great, Gina! And I love all of these tips, and the input from other bloggers. You definitely inspire me to strive for a more balanced, healthy lifestyle every day. Thanks for everything you do!

Love the new face of fitnessista!!!

  32. Meghan @ After the Ivy League on September 6, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I love the new look, and this collection of fitness tips! Julie’s tip about surrounding yourself with people who support you and enjoy fitness as well really rings true to me. It’s so much harder to put that extra time in at the gym when your roommates are sitting around watching tv! Thank god for the blog world…there’s tons of support out there! 🙂

  33. Jason on September 6, 2012 at 1:14 pm

The best point that you’ve made here is the value of quality over quantity. Burnout is the biggest problem with long-term physical fitness. When people try to do too much too soon, it becomes overwhelming. Thanks for posting.

  34. Teresa @ fitnwoodbine.blogspot.com on September 8, 2012 at 9:57 pm

My advice would be that when you slip up get right back on track with the next meal. I would always use the excuse, “Why go for a run when I have eaten so bad today!” Guess what, go for the run!!!!
