Back to “om”

I love Sundays. Especially ones filled with family brunches, getting chores checked off the list, and spending time with the people I love.

We ended up doing a lot yesterday, and when I went to upload pics from the day.. there were only three.

One of Bella patiently waiting for a green bean

and two of my salmon dinner. Salmon, green beans, and sweet potato with almond butter.

I also went to a yoga class.

Hey girl(source)

Sorry Ryan, but I had already made plans to go with a friend 😉 We met at the Children’s Museum and her daughter is 4 days older than Liv! It was technically an off day, but when she texted to see if I’d take a yoga class with her, I decided to go for it- I’ve missed yoga like crazy.

Even though wasn’t my favorite class, it was so glorious to get in a good stretch and “om” session. The instructor seemed pretty awkward and cold throughout the practice, so I figured it might have been one of her first times teaching. I always have extra patience with new instructors, especially since I know how it feels to be super nervous, and I also know how it feels to teach a class that yoga nightmares are made of. For my first and only time teaching yoga -they desperately needed a sub on base, so I got sucked into doing it- and looked down after finishing my sequence to see that we had more than 30 minutes left! Fail whale.

Anyway, it was more of a restorative class with lots of deep stretching and hip openers. I haven’t practiced yoga in over a month, and it was nice to get in another class where I was able to focus and relax.. for the most part.

Some things I learned:

-My right pinky toe is most certainly broken. I stubbed in on the ottoman -notorious toe-stubber- and somehow managed to stop the flow of curse words that usually escape from my mouth, because it HURT. At yoga, I noticed that it’s kind of contorted out to the side and I can actually see the bone sticking out. Lovely.

-I’m ready for a trip to the chiropractor. My right hip is still out, so when I lay down, the fact that one side touches the floor and the other doesn’t, makes me feel like I’m ready to get adjusted. Savasana was spent thinking about getting my hip popped back into place.

-Yoga really is just like riding a bike. Even when I’ve been away for a while, even if I’m rusty, it’s fairly easy to go back into familiar poses, while the poses themselves may feel different. Whenever I finally get in a yoga practice -it seems to skip the radar because of the time commitment- I’m glad I went. Hopefully it won’t be so long between now and my next practice, even if I just do a short flow on my own before bed.

For now, I’m off to run! I’m listening to the playlist I put together for the September Workout. Hopefully it will pump me up enough to make 6.2 miles 😉

xoxo

Almond butter on sweet potatoes look amazing!! I never thought to do something like that but I’m definitely going to try it out!!

My goals for this week are to focus on healthy eating and not be so terrified during my gymnastics class like I was last time!

  4. Michelle @ Eat Move Balance on September 10, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Yes, ma’am, I’m still committed to my clean eats! And it feels (and tastes) so good! 🙂

you just put me in the mood for yoga! maybe during my boys afternoon nap. so for me that will just be a cheesey DVD, but i’ll take it.

I’ve created my own workout calendar on paper for this week. even got up at 6am to get a circuit workout in this morning so i could start my day in peace before it gets crazy. it made for a good start to my monday!

you surely inspire and often give me new ideas in how to set my goals for each week. so thanks for that! so happy to have found this blog a couple of years ago.

I tried yoga for the first time last week. I had to stop doing some of the exercises because they were putting a LOT of strain on my wrists (planks and downward dogs). Also, I kept slipping and sliding all over the mat. Is there a good mat you’d recommend to help with the slide or is a towel the answer?

Good luck on the 10K today and don’t waste time getting into the chiro if things are out of whack – especially with the running you are trying to do too!

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2012 at 6:22 pm

a towel might help a lot. i also have a thick manduka mat which has helped my wrists also, but really it was just time in getting stronger and more used to the poses. downward dog used to KILL me, and now i have no probs with it

Oh no I hope your pinky feels better! I’ve never broken (or sprained) a bone and am always so terrified at the thought.

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2012 at 6:21 pm

only nose and toes so far over here 🙂

Love the new look of the blog (loved the old one too, but it’s good to grow and change).

Thank you SO MUCH for posting the playlist. I think it rocks. We were posted to a new city this summer and I’ve yet to find a gym with classes that I like, but I’m taking advantage of the lovely weather and doing outdoors stuff. The playlists in the classes are one thing that I really miss (hearing new songs to get you going) so I’m taking your September one out on a run right now! I wish I could have given you a credit through iTunes for all of my new purchases lol

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2012 at 6:24 pm

how did you like it?! it’s what helped me make it through today’s run- i listened to “beat it” a few times 🙂
so happy to hear you like the new blog look!
      xoxo

It was great! I actually went through my loop and got back to the house when the music was still pumping and I wanted to keep going! Turned out it was on the last song so it was perfect!

Yoga IS like riding a bike, you just hop back on and all will be well. Easing in, taking your time, doing what works, that’s the best approach.

And for years I have been looking at your sweet potatoes with almond butter and every.one.looks.amazing 🙂

  10. Laura @ She Eats Well on September 10, 2012 at 2:09 pm

So glad you got to practice yesterday. I always leave yoga feeling like going was the best decision ever. Good luck with your hip – a chiropractor sounds like a good idea!

  11. Wendy Heath on September 10, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Does your chiro adjust dislocated/busted toes? If not, time to buddy tape that sucker to its neighbor and use lots of ice! Lol. I totally know what you mean about sitting in savasana thinking about places that need to be put back to rights by the chiro…

On a side note, ibuprofen inhibits bone healing (just FYI) so if you’re on the vitamin I train, may be time to switch to Tylenol for a little bit.

Enjoy the run! I’m working on knocking out schoolwork today… bleh. Hoping to hit up a fitness class later!

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2012 at 6:21 pm

haha i don’t know but i should ask her!
i usually don’t take pain meds, i’m not sure of the last time i did. but i’m a tylenol girl when i do-advil kills my stomach
hope you got in your fitness class- best of luck with all that schoolwork

Sunday is my favorite day of the week! That’s my only day I get to go home to eat lunch and spend time with my family. Family time is rare when you’re a working college student, so ill take it when I can get it! And a free meal of course 🙂

I’ve never been to a yoga class but have always wanted to go! This motivated me to go look for one around town!

Love the quote at the end…definitely some powerful advice.

  13. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on September 10, 2012 at 3:44 pm

Sundays are my favorite too, I always feel so accomplished with getting things done around the house. I love yoga and miss going to classes like I used to!

I went to yoga this weekend too, and this morning I woke up and was actually pretty sore in my hips. Which is totally not a muscle that would ever feel sore for me after running, strength, or any other type of workout. Yoga’s great for targeting those areas that you otherwise don’t even think about!

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2012 at 6:19 pm

that’s so true! i end up working the tiny muscles that are often forgotten

  16. Brittany @ Little b's healthy habits on September 10, 2012 at 5:55 pm

I did hot yoga for the first time this weekend and fell in love!

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2012 at 6:18 pm

i’m glad you liked it! i loooooove hot yoga 🙂

  17. Jacquelyn on September 10, 2012 at 6:21 pm

ah a bad teacher can really ruin a practice! I’m still searching for my favorite teacher in my new town.

I’m joining the clean eats week! first up, “taco” quinoa!

  18. Laura M on September 12, 2012 at 8:50 am

good to hear that yoga is like riding a bike! i’m going to class tonight after taking a 4 month hiatus… a little nervous, not gonna lie!
