Barre Burner {video}

Hi friends! First of all, thank you so much for your comments on this morning’s post. I’ve been at work, but have loved reading them in between classes. As always, thank you for being amazing and for your support and feedback.

We have quite a few fun events in the next couple days. Tonight is our dance recital at work, Meg’s bachelorette get-together, tomorrow is rehearsal + rehearsal lunch and Saturday is the big wedding! I have post ready for the morning (and if I have time to edit another video will be in there), and will be back with some pics from part 1 of the wedding adventures. I’m really excited for my family during such a beautiful time, and am thankful we’re here and get to be a part of it.

Since I recently started teaching barre classes at work, I’ve received quite a few requests for more barre-inspired workouts. I want to start out by saying that while I’m fairly new at teaching barre, it’s a class I love to teach (and one of my all-time favorite workouts!)and I’m pretty stoked to share the effective and killer workout with others.

Barre workout

The other night, I filmed a short video to share, including a thigh-burning series and a grand finale ab burner. The entire workout is 8 minutes, but feel free to repeat it up to 3 times during the day, or use it as a supplement to your strength or cardio workout.

Just a heads up: barre classes are a fantastic way to change up your routine, as they’re low impact and emphasize muscular endurance through lots of reps and isometric holds which will quickly fatigue your muscles. However, due to the nature of the exercises (lots of flexion and extension of the knee joint as well as hip movements), I don’t recommend them if you’re recovering from injury or have hip/knee/joint considerations. Always check with a doc before making any fitness changes. If you’re pregnant and want to do this workout with me (with doc or midwife approval, of course), just skip the ad burner part at the end.

So here ya go! Hope you enjoy it.. and that you think of me later 😉

Here’s a text version, too:

I’ve commented everywhere, but I seriously loved it! I did it once, but I think I’ll do it again if I have time. Speaking of home workouts, I’d love to see a resistance band workout. I know a few moves, but I’d like more!

  5. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on May 9, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Did this tonight in my hotel room. It was perfect, thanks for posting!

Awesome workout! I really felt the curtsey lunge in my it bands–I’ll definitely incorporate into my daily routine to keep it strong. The added leg raise was definitely tough and I’ll need to work on making sure I’m engaging my oblique. Regardless–8 minute workouts are starting to be my new favorite.

My legs and abs are on fiyah! Thanks, as always, for a killer workout, Gina! 🙂

Are your Barre classes typically 30 minutes or 1 full hour? I am dying to try one, but having trouble finding a studio where I live. Boooo.
Compared to other classes you teach/have attended, what do you think is the biggest and most effective difference participants get from barre classes?

  13. Joanna on May 10, 2013 at 8:53 am

    Loved it. More please.

It’s so fun that your work does dance recitals! I wish my work did that… but then again, I work in an office that writes software so it might be a little awkward. It just sounds so fun!

  25. Julie on May 10, 2013 at 2:56 pm

Have a great wedding weekend! Can’t wait to see the recap! Best of luck to Meg & your lil bro. 🙂

  26. kelli on May 10, 2013 at 3:28 pm

I tried a barre class a couple weeks ago and loved it! My workouts usually involve HIIT/kettlebell classes, so the slower movements helped me SLOW down and CALM down and focus! Loved it… and am definitely going to try your workout. Thanks!

  27. beachmama on May 10, 2013 at 4:01 pm

Hi Gina! Just found you . . . your barre workout looks FABULOUS and tough, which is just what I need! I’ll try it tonight.

I would LOVE for you to come teach here in Bodega Bay. I rarely leave because . . . WHY?! I realize it’s a drive but I’ll bet I could muster a group of interested students for your Zumba and/or barre workouts. My fitness has dropped tremendously since I gave up Jazzersize years ago and then Pilates. I talk to a lot of people on the beach and at the farmer’s market and could gather a list of interested people is this is something you would consider. The Community Center is small so I’d say a max of 12 would work well. We have regular yoga classes but that’s it. Would this be something you’d consider??

    • beachmama on May 10, 2013 at 4:05 pm

Oh, silly me, I thought you were local!! We’d still love to have you here but understand if you said “no”!! ; )

Hi! I’ve been reading your blog for years and just wanted to say that you look absolutely amazing these days! You definitely inspire me to keep up with my own weight lifting and I’m loving the results I’m seeing in my own body. I just wanted to pop in and say how awesome you are!

  31. Lauren L. @ Newest Obsession on May 14, 2013 at 3:50 pm

I just took a break from studying for finals to do this in my living room! I didn’t have time to make it to the gym today, so thank you for posting this. Now I have more energy to keep studying, and I think I even combated my chocolate craving!

I do a lot of your workouts and I love them all. The videos help with form cues and motivation.

  32. Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets on May 14, 2013 at 4:00 pm

I did this workout after a 25-minute booty burning treadmill workout, and I know I’ll be feeling this tomorrow! I’ve also done some of your sweaty monthly workouts and I love the feeling after doing them.
