Beauty and skincare faves

Helloooooo. How are ya? How’s the week going so far? We have a busy day ahead -the girls have lessons and I train my first client back in Valdosta- and I’m looking forward to enjoying some time outside with the fam.

For this morning’s post, I thought I’d share the latest and greatest beauty product roundup. I get a lot of questions about my favorite makeup products and hair routine, and I always love reading posts like this to get some new ideas.

Roundup of beauty and skincare faves, featuring lots of safe and nontoxic products. Adding some of these to my wishlist! fitnessista.com

It changes every now and again, but here’s what the staples have been like for the past few months:

To cleanse:

Beautycounter charcoal bar

or Fresh Soy face cleanser

I like these products because they make my face feel really clean, and they’re super gentle. I had sensitive skin -aka if I get a facial I have to tell them to avoid any harsh products or peels because my face feels like it’s on fire- and have to be careful with what I use. Thankfully my skin isn’t super prone to breakouts, so I’m not too worried about having to use intense stuff on my face.

To moisturize:

Fresh Rose hydrating gel cream or

Beautycounter Nighttime moisturizer mixed with a couple drops of Face Oil

These are both extremely nourishing and moisturize without feeling heavy or greasy. I LOVE how light the rose moisturizer is, and also using a couple of drops of this mix of plant-based oils. (Way better than just using Argan or rose hip oil, IMO, and it smells lovely.)

I change up my eye cream every so often, and right now I like this one. Sometimes nothing can help the bags though haha.

Every other day or so:

Exfoliate with Clarisonic

Fresh Rose Face Mask (it smells BEAUTIFUL)

Weekly:

Charcoal face mask

There’s a visible difference when I skip out on exfoliating. My skin tone looks dull and lackluster (paired with hit-or-miss sleep, and you’ve got a winning combo haha), and I feel like I need more makeup. When I make it a regular part of my routine, I notice a huge difference in the texture and tone of my skin. Also, it’s fun to use the Clarisonic, and also trying to convince the Pilot to let me do a charcoal mask on him.

Makeup:

Skinceuticals Tinted Sunscreen

Tarte BB cream or a concealer to cover freckles or bags under my eyes

Tarte eyeliner

Anastasia wax crayon, brow pencil or brow shadow, clear brow mascara

Tarte primer (<—necessary if you want eyeshadow to look more like its true color and actually last)

I rotate between a few different eyeshadows, but I always go back to my Naked 2 palette and this Tarte Palette

This blush, which reminds me so much of the Nars orgasm blush (with better ingredients)

Lip gloss. Here are my current faves:

Lotion, self-tanner and extras:

I love the scent of this lotion, and it’s super moisturizing. I’m also a huge fan of plain ol’ coconut oil as lotion.

For self tanner, this one is my latest obsession. These gloves help prevent giant streaks and blend it in so there are no streaks, and it has a perfect brown hue (no Oompa Loompa orange).

To take the makeup off: jojoba oil on a cotton round will do the trick. It’s gentle on eyes and works extremely well. You can find it at Trader Joe’s or health food stores.

Little pick-me-up: rosewater spray (or you can make your own)

Awesome brushes, and something to clean them

It’s funny because I think my routine is so *simple* but once I write everything down, it’s kind of a lot. This is a huge reason why I’ve made a switch to safer skin care options, because it adds up quickly when you consider all of the ingredients that go into making a single product. I also still love homemade beauty and skin care options (here are some of my faves) and I’d love to hear any that you’re enjoying lately.

What’s your current “can’t live without” beauty or skincare products?? I always love trying new things. 🙂

xoxo

Gina

Are you still planning to post that blowout tutorial?

    • Emily on April 25, 2017 at 3:27 pm

Second this! I would love to see it!

      • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 7:35 pm

i definitely still want to do one! i’m having major photography issues right now. my macro lens is stuck on my camera, so i have to send it in to be fixed AND i broke my tripod. soooooo it will probably be a couple of weeks haha.

I am really great with moisturizing but never exfoliate! Do you have any recommendations for budget friendly exfoliators?

The Alba Botanicals line has some great options that are around $5.

I love posts like this!!! What is the Nars-like blush you use? I didn’t see the link. I’ve been using coconut oil + baking soda (2:1 ratio) as a face wash 3x weekly for about 4 years now and swear by it. I also use Simple moisturizing face wash with my Clarisonic.

Is the Clarisonic worth it? I always think about splurging on one, but haven’t done it yet. I love Jojoba oil as an eye make up remover, I also use it as a facial cleanser occasionally. I feel like my skin always looks really clear and hydrated the next day.

    • anne on April 25, 2017 at 9:38 am

The Clarisonic is 100% worth it! It has changed my skin!! I LOVE mine so much!!

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:37 am

the clarisonic is totally worth it! they last a long time, too

  5. Juliana on April 25, 2017 at 7:56 am

How do you like the Skinceuticals sunscreen? I’ve been debating between that or the Coola one and haven’t been able to find it around here to try it. Does it work? Do you have to slather on a ton of it? Does it leave a weird white residue?

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:36 am

i LOVE it. it’s tinted, so it matches my skin tone perfectly and goes on really well. it’s smooth and you don’t need a ton of it

  6. Julie on April 25, 2017 at 9:12 am

I’ve been using the jojoba oil from TJ’s to take off my eye makeup ever since you recommended it a couple months ago, & I’m really liking it. Thx! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:35 am

      so happy you like it!

  7. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on April 25, 2017 at 9:44 am

Johnson’s and Johnson’s Baby oil! I know it sounds weird, but my skin is so dry with swimming and it’s so creamy. It keeps my skin perfectly smooth. I totally need that tanner!

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:35 am

      that smells so good too!

  8. Christine on April 25, 2017 at 9:45 am

Did you ever the facial you got and if zapping those spots on your face woke? I have some spots I really want gone and am hoping there is something I can do about it.

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:35 am

quite a few of them are gone, but the difference wasn’t as dramatic as i was expecting. i think you need to go a few times for great results. but yes, it definitely works

      • Christine on April 25, 2017 at 10:45 am

Holy typos! Glad you understood what I meant! Geez! Thanks for the feedback! It may be worth trying in the future. I just added Vitamin C serum to my retinol so I’ll see if that helps.

Not related to beauty at all… but def related to happiness. DAIRY-FREE BAILEY’S!!!! http://www.baileys.com/en-us/flavors.html

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:35 am

AHHHHHH I HEARD ABOUT THIS but haven’t seen it yet!! have you found it?! i must try this asap

      • Kristen on April 25, 2017 at 10:38 am

Not yet! I’m def on the hunt; I will report back when I do. I live in NYC, so if it’s anywhere, it’s here, right?! Dairy-free Irish coffee here I come

        • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 10:44 am

yesssss you will definitely find it there. ENJOY! 🙂 i will keep my eye out for it, too

      • priya on April 25, 2017 at 11:47 am

        i can confirm it’s pretty good 😉
but i’ve only had baileys once. i dont think it’s quite as creamy, and it has an almond taste, but still good. my roommates and friends LOVE it

        • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 7:34 pm

          i’m so excited!!!

I use the Aztec Healing Clay mask that you can find on Amazon about once a week and really like the way it makes my skin feel. It looks ridiculous but I’ve managed to get my husband and 13 year old son to try it as well. My 15 month old daughter probably thinks we’re all swamp monsters or something. HA!

  11. Tracy on April 25, 2017 at 11:29 am

Do you have a mascara you use?

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 7:33 pm

i really like the tarte mascaras i’ve tried. the primer (in the white bottle) is a game changer. it makes lashes look so long!
i also really liked the beautycounter mascara, but my tube dried out way faster than it should have

I became a Norwex consultant because I love their cleaning products (free from harsh chemicals and environmentally friendly) so much… but discovered I love a lot of their personal care / beauty products as well. My current obsession is the body scrub mitt. I exfoliate my legs with it before shaving and then don’t need any shaving cream.

    http://haleygoodwin.norwex.biz/en_US/customer/shop/product-detail/96979

I also really like Perfectly Posh products for more of the “fun” items like hand creme, bath gels, etc.

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2017 at 7:34 pm

i didn’t even know they had body care items!! i bought a ton of towels for the house (the enviro towels, kitchen towels and hand towels) and didn’t even think about checking anything else out. i’ll browse your site!

      • Haley on April 26, 2017 at 7:21 am

Woohoo – I love all their towels, you can use them a million times before they get smelly. Their body cloths and bath towels are the same way (check out the kids bath towels, they are the softest… and the kids pet-to-dry hand towels are awesome, my girls that are just a little younger than yours love the kitty) with the not smelling.

PS – Just saw your latest post and I was double checking to see if the towel workouts were Norwex or not, hahaha!

Thanks for sharing this! My skin has been acting up recently (hormones, weather, stress, all of the above?) and need to change it up. Looking forward to trying the cleansers you suggested!

This has been my new favorite product! Makes my lips feel awesome without adding a lot of yuck on my face. http://www.sephora.com/argan-lip-sting-plumping-butter-P411573

Thank you so much for your recommendations! I am not a make up girl, but I have been trying to switch out what I use on my skin/body to safer options. There is a couple local (North Carolina) to me that has started an amazing company with toxic-free products for families and I am absolutely loving their products.
    http://www.raisethemwell.com?afmc=2z
I especially love the zinc oxide powder. It comes with a recipe book to make your own sunscreen, acne cream, diaper cream, etc. I bought some last year and made sunscreen in less than 5 minutes and it lasted ALL summer. I felt good about using it on my girls (similar ages to Liv and P)! I also love the Magnesium Oil, the prenatal vitamins, and the Vitamin D drops for myself and the girls.

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2017 at 7:26 pm

that is amazing! i’ll check it out now 🙂

      • Whitney on May 9, 2017 at 9:08 am

Not sure if you found anything you are interested in, but I thought I would tell you that there’s a coupon code for $5 off anything until next Monday (5/15).

I use coconut oil for lotion too! I love Clinques sunscreen/tinted moisturizer!

I’m all into oils now! I use argon oil on my face at least twice a day. I also love coconut oil for removing my eye makeup!! I have try skin, so oils are perfect for me!

  17. Taryn on April 26, 2017 at 7:16 am

Love this post! My recent obsession is using witch hazel is a toner morning and night. I suffer from breakouts (at age 37 – seriously?!) so I feel like that helps keeps things really clean as well. I started using Beautycounter products back in January and have been excited to reduce the chemicals from my skincare routine.

  18. Betsy on April 27, 2017 at 7:29 am

I use coconut oil to take off my eye makeup, but the jar I have in my bathroom at home is HUGE and I’ve been looking for something more portable to bring with me when I stay with my boyfriend. I’m going to pick up the jojoba oil next time I’m at TJs! Thanks for the rec!

Also, NYX sells a brow wax crayon that’s less than half the price of the Anastasia one (I think about $8!) You can find it at CVS, Target, or on Amazon. I swear by it. Curly hair = curly brows and the crayon keeps everything in place almost all day.

  19. Mel on April 30, 2017 at 2:49 pm

Thank you for not shoving BC down our throats like everyone else. 🙂 i mean i like their stuff but there are other options! I love that Tarte BB too. It gets like a 2 on EWG. Jane Iredale and Juice Beauty are great too.

    • Fitnessista on May 1, 2017 at 8:39 am

exactly! i’m not an all or nothing person 😉 LOVE beautycounter but there’s a lot of other great brands out there, too
