Bringin’ the Cakes Back

Hi guys 😀 Happy Sunday! Hope you’re having a wonderful and relaxing day so far.

The past 24 hours have included two different kinds of cake 🙂

Exhibit A:

tiramisu

Exhibit B:

pancake

Last night, after TurboFiring it up, I made a REAL dinner! The pilot has been a working machine lately and flew nights last week, so it was the first time in a while that I’ve made a legit meal for both of us 😀

dinner

We each had salads with honey goat cheese, grape tomatoes and spinach (with Garlic Gold and Annie’s Honey Dijon vinaigrette)

salad

Salmon (a test recipe that I’ll share with ya soon, but I promise it was delishhhh) and baked okra

salmon

the pilot also had some brown rice.

After dinner, we met some friends at Two Friends for drinks and dessert.

Two glasses of Riesling the size of my head:

wine

+ Tiramisu shared with the pilot

tiramisu

(Don’t you just want to grab a fork and dive in??)

I LOVE Two Friends Tiramisu. Not soggy at all- so fluffy and decadent.

This morning, we brought back a tradition: Pancake Sunday 😀

I know Heaby also celebrates Pancake Sunday with her hubs. The pilot and I used the make pancakes every Sunday when we lived in North Carolina and would eat our ‘cakes on the front porch and listen to country music.

Pancake Sunday is back, yo 🙂

batter

For his batter, we used *this recipe*, and I had Perfect Protein Pancakes.

His:

pancakes

Hers:

pancakes (2)

Well we’re off to the farm to get some eggs and veggies, then back to the casa for clean-stravaganza and to work for a training appointment.

See ya tonight!

xoxo,

G

Something to talk about: Do you (or did you) have any food traditions? Pancake Sunday, Indian Food Wednesday, Taco Tuesday?? Growing up, my dadoo would always make us waffles on Saturday before our soccer games (yes, I played soccer for a little while.. and I was the goalie would would sit and pick flowers). What’s your pancake topping or mix-in of choice? I love fresh fruit and maple syrup, but chocolate chips reign supreme.

What a lovely dinner! And that tiramisu looks heavenly. Yum.

I am celebrating pancake sunday as well, I’m making red potato pancakes for lunch. We also usually celebrate Taco Tuesday and Pizza Saturday, although we haven’t had either for a few weeks.

For pancake toppings, I like to have an overeasy egg on top and then I let the yolk ooze out onto my cakes. It is so good!

    • Fitnessista on August 8, 2010 at 12:55 pm

      that sounds AWESOME

    • Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on August 8, 2010 at 12:57 pm

I am SO jumping on the Pizza Saturday train!!!!

  2. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on August 8, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Love me some tiramisu!! We had pancake Sunday when I was a kid too- I think it was my parents’ way of getting us to go to church 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful afternoon!

  3. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on August 8, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Pancake Sunday is a FANTASTIC idea!!! I don’t have one meal I have on a single day but I usually cook up w big brunch every sunday (french toast, eggs, fruit, smoked salmon) and we always enjoy it on our deck 🙂 Something about eating outdoors makes me feel SO RELAXED and on vacation. Love it!

Had a few glasses of Riesling last night ma self 😉 Lately I’ve enjoyed riesling spritzers with frozen mangoes and pineapple in them 🙂

    Have a fantastic Sunday!!

Yum! Pancakes! I love making pancakes! But my family has been requesting waffles lately! Chocolate chip waffles to be exact!

  5. Whitney @ Whitinspired on August 8, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Back in college, the hubs and I would have chocolate chip pancakes and scrambled eggs every single Sunday!

  6. Frankie @FitnessFrank.net on August 8, 2010 at 1:15 pm

LOVE the balance your blog promotes – I’ve been lurking around here for a lil while now, so thought I’d say hi 🙂

My boy and I don’t necessarily have a certain food day, but somehow certain dishes seem to have attached themselves to particular TV shows (sad as that sounds!). For a while, it was always enchiladas and x-factor (our American Idol in the UK).
Really love the idea though. My boy’s working away during the week now, so I reckon it’s time to start some new traditions to celebrate the time we do have together.

Thanks for the important nudge in the right direction. Life’s too short to be good all the time 😀 x

  7. Shanna on August 8, 2010 at 1:22 pm

I’d visit my Dad on the weekends and Sundays were all about the pancakes and bacon. Brings back very happy memories 😉

  8. Nicole on August 8, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Um, yeah…do they ship that tiramisu?? I have had no luck with protein pancakes…I need to try your recipe because yours look nice and fluffy! Yummers!

  9. Kate on August 8, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Mmm pancakes. I make them for me and my boyfriend all the time, usually he requests them after we finish a workout at the gym. On top, I like sliced bananas, walnuts or pecans, and a drizzle of maple syrup. I also like mixing blueberries in the batter. I love how they burst and get super sweet!

Pizza monday! Mondays are always tiring, so there’s something to look forward to. And there’s a pizza place nearby that has X-tra large pizzas for $7 on Mondays and they’re sooo good… and they do gluten-free crusts, whole-wheat crusts, so many different kinds of veggies and toppings—so good! Can’t wait til monday!

Where did you live in NC?! I’m from NC! 😀

  12. Cyndi @ Weightless Life on August 8, 2010 at 1:58 pm

We don’t have any food traditions, but I love the idea of Pancake Sunday. I love to keep my pancakes simple and just top them with maple syrup. But I wouldn’t kick blueberry pancakes out of bed.

  13. Katheryn on August 8, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Hubby and the kids make waffles every Saturday morning while I’m on my long run. It’s a great tradition!

  14. Paige @Running Around Normal on August 8, 2010 at 2:24 pm

That tiramisu looks so good! Sounds like you had a fun Saturday. I love that you go to the farm to get your eggs and veggies too 🙂

  15. Kristina on August 8, 2010 at 2:31 pm

    that tiramisu always looks delicious…

I’m kinda strange, I like my pancakes best with just a LITTLE maple syrup… I prefer to dip in… if pancakes get too soggy I’m over them.

we were at a bed & breakfast recently, and the owner (Cecil… LOVE talking for hours to that man!) made us pancakes and put WHIP TOPPING on mine! I wasn’t even going to eat them it sounded so foul, and Jason looked at me like I was crazy – so I tried them and it was delicious.

    heh.

  16. Kelly Michelle on August 8, 2010 at 3:03 pm

haha I was the T-ball player who would do cartwheels in the outfield

  17. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on August 8, 2010 at 3:12 pm

That tiramisu looks so good! We do Pizza Fridays – homemade wheat dough and different toppings!

  18. laura on August 8, 2010 at 3:19 pm

I, for one, definitely want to grab a fork and dig in to that tiramisu….and i aint even a fan of that partic dessert….so that’s saying something!!
Also..that salmon looks utterly amazing xx

  19. mm on August 8, 2010 at 3:30 pm

When I was growing up we always had pancakes on saturday mornings. Now my husband and I do waffles on either Saturday or Sunday morning (depending on what else we have going on).

  20. Lindsay on August 8, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Ahh I love your soccer game story! My soccer career was short lived too… I was the player that danced on the field and spun in circles 🙂

  21. Jenna on August 8, 2010 at 3:59 pm

One of your pancakes is heart shaped!! 😀 && haha, your soccer/goalie story reminds me of when I played softball. I would stand in the outfit with my glove over my face complaining how hot it was. LOL! Oh, and back in the day, our family went to Pizza Hut once a week as a special occasion/tradition kinda thing. As far as pancakes go, I don’t think I’ve had any since I became vegan..so I’d have to think about that one. But I love Van’s waffles topped with sugar-free jam & margarine. TDF! <33

  22. Jenna on August 8, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    stand in the outfield** (hehe..”outfit”)

  23. Heather (Heather's Dish) on August 8, 2010 at 4:04 pm

my hubby and i always do pizza friday! but growing up we’d always do a “big breakfast” on sundays with eggs, bacon, and either pancakes or biscuits 🙂

  24. Jackie (Peaces of Earth) on August 8, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I love the his and hers pancakes!! Too cute. I have to try those protein pancakes. Maybe right now? Perfect lunch! 🙂

As a kid my grandparents and I would always order a pizza “pie” on Saturdays and watch the horse races on TV. We would always eat in the kitchen, but on Saturdays we would eat in the living room. Grandpa and I would go and pick up the pizza while Grandma donned the coffee table with the same table cloth and paper plates. Ahhh, memories!!

  25. Run Sarah on August 8, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Both cakes look awesome! I have been known to celebrate Taco Tues and Indian Wed but I haven’t done pancakes with the hubs on a Sunday yet.

  26. Laury @ thefitnesdish on August 8, 2010 at 4:24 pm

    Wow…yummy food!!!

I LOVE blueberry pancakes…and buckwheat banana pancakes best!!!!

  27. Angela on August 8, 2010 at 4:52 pm

When I was little we always got donuts on sundays.. I don’t do that anymore!

I love fresh fruit and maple syrup on pancakes!! Chocolate chip pancakes are always good too!

    • Fitnessista on August 8, 2010 at 6:56 pm

ahhh! we would do donuts on sundays too! SO GOOD 🙂

  28. Kristi on August 8, 2010 at 4:58 pm

My husband and I are Peace Corps volunteers living in Honduras…all week we look forward to homemade Pizza Friday and have recently started Pancake Sunday! There’s no maple syrup for hours so he loads his up with peanut butter and jelly and I go for peanut butter and honey and we eat them like sandwiches 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 8, 2010 at 6:55 pm

that sounds delicious! THANK YOU so much for the amazing work you and your hubby are doing <3

  29. Kate on August 8, 2010 at 5:14 pm

OMG I was the goalie when I was a kid and I got in trouble for picking flowers too! I love that someone else did it! And we definitely had Taco Tuesday! 😀

  30. melissa on August 8, 2010 at 5:25 pm

my husband and i started our own christmas brunch tradition of fresh fruits, olives, capers, lox & goat cheese. i love it! as a kid, my dad would get dunkin donuts on saturday mornings or make us pancakes 🙂 pancake toppers vary greatly depending on what fruit is in season but i always try to incorporate chocolate somehow! ;p

    • Fitnessista on August 8, 2010 at 6:55 pm

that sounds like an amazing christmas tradition! may i come over? 🙂

  31. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on August 8, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Hahaha I can totally picture you being the goalie picking flowers. My family has never had a food tradition, but my ex-boyfriends family would always have pizza and a movie on Fridays. I LOVED their family! It was so cute.

  32. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life on August 8, 2010 at 6:04 pm

When I was younger, my dad would bowl on Friday nights, so Mom declared that Pizza Fridays. Sundays were always “Waffle Sundays” where my Dad was in charge. Both hold such great memories! I always loved having everyone together on Sunday mornings for breakfast. 🙂

  33. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 8, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Love the His & Hers stacks and batter recipes. Too cute!! Pilots stack looks like it should be on an Aunt Jemima or Mrs Butterworth’s commercial or something…totally perfect job!

Salmon…such a great fish to add healthy fats, EFAs, and all kinds of other good stuff for women. Great choice 🙂

    Tiramisu…looks phenomenal!

Cute haircut and shoes from your last post…girl, I love platforms and I know you are looking sekkkkksi in those!

    🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 8, 2010 at 6:57 pm

thank you friend! hope you’ve had a great weekend <3

  34. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on August 8, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Pancake Sunday is a great idea for a tradition. I want to start doing that! My favourite are plain ones topped with bananas, berries, chopped almonds, yogurt and some maple syrup. I like to go alllll out on the toppings. 😀

  35. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on August 8, 2010 at 8:42 pm

My grandma always makes me her Italian Meatloaf when I come home from schoool. And it is so good!! I don’t think anyone else cook like her -D That is about the only food thing my family has.

Favorite mix in for pancakes?? Chocolate, hands down. Except I ordered chocolate chip pancakes from IHop a few weeks back and it was an actual chocolate pancake with chips in it. NOw, this sounds good in theory but it was actually kind of gross. I definitely prefer a regular batter with the chips mixed in.

  36. christina cadden on August 8, 2010 at 8:47 pm

mmm, all that food looks amazing!

  37. Tyffanie on August 8, 2010 at 9:14 pm

The hubs and I don’t have any food traditions as of now, but I like the idea of having one! Normally he does make me breakfast on Sundays. Sometimes it is pan con palta (pita bread with sliced avocado and salt), or maybe scrambled eggs, or even sometimes crepes with nutella and fruit! I like the idea of Pancake Sunday though.

The only other food tradition I can think of in my family is that my dad makes us Belgium waffles on Christmas morning, but that is only once per year!

  38. jessica on August 8, 2010 at 10:31 pm

I’m Italian so pasta Sundays are a tradition in my family. I look forward to it all week!

  39. Ange on August 9, 2010 at 9:40 am

Yum!!! We do the DIY Pizza Friday thing but I’m def adding this into our Sunday routine now before church!

  40. Lauren on August 9, 2010 at 11:33 am

Sundays were all about sour dough pancakes or waffles in my house growing up. We even had “pancake music” that we’d play while we all pitched in with the pancakes! My parents had an amazing sour dough starter (inherited from my g-pa, who kept the stuff up for yeeears) and it produced the most incredible dough. My all-time fave was blueberry pancakes. Such good memories 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2010 at 12:21 pm

that sounds so wonderful! love that you had pancake music, too!

  41. Doc on August 9, 2010 at 12:18 pm

I’m jealous of your tiramisu…but next week I’ll be at my parent’s house making fresh berry crisps for everyone to drool over lol.

My fiance and I started pancake Saturdays last year. We’re not super diligent about it, but we def try to eat one breakfast together on the weekends now. At the kitchen table. Which is not how we normally eat…

    Have a great week!

  42. Avery on August 9, 2010 at 12:34 pm

In the colder months, I usually have “soup sunday”. I can spend an afternoon chopping veggies and simmering homemade soup and bake some fresh bread to go with : )

  43. CaSaundra on August 10, 2010 at 8:06 am

Both cakes sound/look delish to me!! :o)
