Cake and Milk

Sometimes after a long day, cake and [almond] milk is a very good thing 😉

cakes

I have no idea how I forgot about my chocolate mug cake. It’s been way, wayyyy too long.

This morning, after I last saw ya, I went to hit up the weights and do a few minutes of ellipticizing. As much as I live for cardio, something about weights makes me feel so triumphant. Whenever I leave the gym after a good weights sesh, I’m invincible 😉

Midwife appointment (more on that over on the family page)

trip to get a dress for a wedding on Sunday [which was successful, yeehaw!]

prep for tomorrow’s classes (I’m teaching the employee lunchtime class at the resort- pretty stoked about it)

[every time I tried to take a photo, I cut off my head. And then I was too hungry to keep trying, so there ya go, haha]

All day, I was EXHAUSTED from not sleeping well last night. I used chocolate to give me a little pre-Zumba buzzzzz, but a green juice or short nap would have been a good option too 😉

Off to Zumba-fy <3

Today’s tip: Workouts should leave you feeling excited and invigorated, not exhausted to the max. If you leave the gym totally wiped out mentally and physically on a daily basis, it may be a good time to assess your routine. Add in some lower intensity feel-good workouts, like restorative yoga, riding your bike (or a spin bike, if you’re like me and can’t ride a real one), walking or swimming.

Head’s up: Get your giveaway pants ready! Tomorrow AM 😀

    • Kathleen on August 30, 2011 at 10:41 pm

Me either!! I thought I was the only one! I tend to keep it a secret so people don’t look at me like I’m from another planet lol!

you girls are making me feel so much better 🙂

I like the pic — shows off the baby bump!

And I totally agree about taking it down a notch if your workouts are totally wiping you out. I recently cut back on the amount of cardio I was doing — it was getting to be too much!

Oooh, chocolate mug cake – I must try this. I also love how it’s the perfect one person portion, because if it was an entire cake I would be in trouble 🙂

i really want chocolate, but there is none here, it makes me sad
I went on a 20K bike ride today, it was awesome and i felt so good afterwards. love that feeling

  16. Ali @ urbanfruitbat on August 30, 2011 at 10:59 pm

LOVE your tip at the end. So true and so many people need to hear it. It is not all about pushing yourself to the max all the time! Balance is key.

  17. Mary-Heather on August 30, 2011 at 11:00 pm

I thought this was going to be a tres leches recipe! 😉

Weights are so awesome. I feel so powerful when I’m done! Love.

    • Fitnessista on August 31, 2011 at 12:34 am

nope, i use alton brown’s recipe for tres leches… and my fam said it was the best they’ve ever had (which says a LOT) 🙂

  18. Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) on August 30, 2011 at 11:04 pm

It’s ALMOST ok that your head is cut-off in that pic, because we got a nice view of your cute little baby-bump instead 🙂 🙂

I love your chocolate mug-cake recipe– I feel like I need to make one for myself pretty soon. I’m ALSO getting a hankering for socca, since I have the ingredients for it on hand. Do you have a suggestion for what to add to make a sweet/chocolate socca?

    • Fitnessista on August 31, 2011 at 12:35 am

hmmm, just cocoa powder, sweetener, cinnamon and espresso powder should do the trick 🙂 that sounds good!

  19. Lindsay@LivingLindsay on August 30, 2011 at 11:08 pm

I made your chocolate mug cake for the first time before I started my own blog and I loved it! I might have to make it again. It’s so easy and really yummy! Thanks for the reminder 🙂

  20. Katie @ Plates and Paste on August 30, 2011 at 11:11 pm

Oh my god…do you not know how to ride a bike or do you just not like to? I only ask bc I never learned to ride a bike and I always feel like a freak! It’d be great to know that I’m not the only one 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 31, 2011 at 12:33 am

i learned wayyyyy back in the day, but even though people say “it’s just like riding a bike”, no, it is not something i can just pick up again. hahah

  21. @HilaryFleming @ healthgirltv.com on August 30, 2011 at 11:21 pm

thanks girl! lots of chocolate and naps 🙂

  22. Deva (Voracious Vorilee) on August 30, 2011 at 11:37 pm

I totally agree with breaks. If I leave the gym or finish a workout feeling WIPED OUT, then I re-evaluate, take an extra rest day, etc.

  23. Lotte on August 30, 2011 at 11:38 pm

Hey Gina. Just wanna say hallo from Denmark, and tell how much I love your blog!

Mug cake = best chocolate life saver ever invented! I have a giant coffee mug that makes the perfect cakey circle 🙂

  25. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on August 31, 2011 at 1:37 am

Glad you found a dress. That’s awesome. Love it when the Mall Gods are shining down on you 🙂

And the choco mug cake. I made that once ages ago!! Thanks for the reminder. I need to do it again, stat.

And it’s so hard to get a decent pic w/out head choppage. I have found that sitting in front of my computer and letting the computer take the picture works or using the reverse camera feature on my iphone. Or just saying screw it and readers will live without seeing a picture 🙂

I’m addicted with this roasted seaweed snack since I’ve been to Shanghai!!!
But I prefer the variation with Oliveoil and Salt *yum* – just purchased a bigpack containing 9 small packages which are screaming my name pretty loadly right now….

  27. Aine @ Something to Chew Over on August 31, 2011 at 3:37 am

Great tip, I need to be reminded of that sometimes. I feel like I’ve cheated myself if I don’t work as hard as I can but that’s not sustainable when working out 6 days a week.

I’m checking out your cake recipe now! 🙂

  28. Jenn @ Lean Body Pilates on August 31, 2011 at 7:11 am

I can’t ride a bike either! I really was planning on learning this spring and summer, but it’s August & I’m still in the same boat. I guess it’s not meant to be… Glad I’m not the only one though. 🙂

  29. Hillary on August 31, 2011 at 7:26 am

I’ve been following that workout intensity advice lately. A few days this week, I just needed to walk. Not run. Not ellipticize. Just walk. It felt great!

  30. Sally Anne @ PaleoRunnerGirl on August 31, 2011 at 8:07 am

I keep seeing those seaweed snacks and wanting to buy them, but then lose courage! What do they taste like? If they are akin to Kale Chips then I will be ALL over that!

  31. Jess @PinkChilli on August 31, 2011 at 8:20 am

I need to get back on the exercise Wagon. I really got into Turbofire and then my job relocated and i’ve been lazy! Putting a plan in place this week to get moving again!!

    • Fitnessista on August 31, 2011 at 9:47 am

      you can do it! 🙂

  32. Chantelle on August 31, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Thank you for your workout tip about getting maxed out emotionally and/or physically from a workout. I joined a gym about 2 months ago and have rocked out the Body Pump and Zumba classes since with just a little treadmill running in between. Last night, I was just not feeling Zumba when I got to class. I used to smile and feel very challenged through the entire class, so feeling bored and uninspired was not normal. Maybe it’s time to throw in some new activity…

PS – Chocolate macaroons sound foodgasmic 🙂

looks yummy! and i LOVE that it is vegan. must.try.asap.
love the tip for today- i can definitely relate! I tend to burn myself out a lot during the week with workouts/work/little sleep/etc.- relaxing is always the highlight of every weekend!

  34. diana on August 31, 2011 at 2:21 pm

    Hi,
The chocolate cake looks delicious, but have do you do if you dont have/ don´t wan´t to use protein powder? Do you substitute it with more flour or just leave it out? You seem to use it in so many of your recipes.

  35. Brittany on August 31, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Love your computer, I have the same exact one! 😀
Chocolate cake in a mug? I’m intrigued.
