Colored denim and printed wedges

When I first saw colored denim last spring, I thought to myself “I’m glad the trend will be gone by next year.”

Nope.

Here we are again and colored denim is more popular than it was last year. Same thing with skinny jeans… I fought the trend forever because I thought they were horribly unflattering, and then ended up biting the bullet.. and loving them.

And now, I kinda want a pair of colored denim 😉

So the question is, how to wear them?

colored denim

1. Same color scheme with stripes

2. Bold with neutral stripes

3. Any color with a basic tee

4. (no pic) Any color with a denim button-up top

I’ve been looking for an example of a printed top with colored denim, but it’s something I’d probably be more careful with. It’s easy to take it from classy to clown when your jeans are a bright color. If the print is understated and in the same color family, I’m thinking it would look pretty bueno.

Another big thing this season: printed wedges!

I LOVE me some wedges. As a shorty, it’s a nice way to get some extra height, and I like it’s an easy way to dress up a sundress without looking too dressed up, since Tucson is pretty casual.

One of the things I’m thinking about getting adventurous with this season is mixing and matching patterned wedges with a printed skirt or top. Mixing prints is one of the things that I’ve always been unsure of, but thank you to the gloriousness of Pinterest, I think I’m going to give it a whirl. I think if the patterns are in the same color family, or if one of them is neutral, it keeps you from looking like you got dressed with the closet light turned off… right??

There are some awesome tips in this article, too 🙂

Do you have any colored denim? What color did you go for?

What’s your favorite summer shoe?

I have a feeling I’ll be in my TOMS ballet flats all summer 🙂

I haven’t bought any yet but I’m thinking about it. I’m not very daring with fashion so I’m a bit a afraid to sport colored jeans!

I’ve recently been wanting some colored denim (even though it kind of reminds me of being about 8 years old and having a rainbow of pastel jean shorts, haha). I’m thinking a red pair would be a good starting point. I like your idea of mixing printed wedges with another print – I’m sure you’ll pull it off well! I love wedges, too, but I don’t have any printed ones – yet 🙂

I remember when I was about 10 having a pair of bright pink jeans. I always struggled with finding the right top to wear with them. Needless to say I will NOT be getting myself any of them this time round! Printed wedges on the other hand might be creeping into my wardrobe!

I have a pair of orange jeans that I’m absolutely in love with, and I just snagged a pair of red ones 🙂

I really want a jewel purple pair of colored skinny jeans but I haven’t found any in my size yet! Last place had the perfect pair, but onyl sizes 11 & 13 🙁
I love my TOMS and cannot wait to get the ballet style ones, and this is coming from a total sandal girl!

I LOVE the mint colored jeans but I don’t know if a preggo could pull that off 🙂

I have a pair of maroon, a pair of green and a pair of purple jeans and I love them! I actually can’t remember the last time I wore a pair of denim coloured jeans. I pair them with a neutral top and then usually a striped cardigan – I have a mustard yellow one that I like to wear with the maroon jeans. Go for it!

The wedges are cute but I’m a Birkenstock girl 🙂

Madewell has a bunch of fabulous colored jeans!

Oh colored demin…. I REALLY want some, but I’m also kinda scared.

I’m stalking a pair of red jeans at the Gap right now. I don’t know if I can pull it off, but I want to try!

i saw those, too- love them!

I think white is the weirdest I’ll go with my coloured denim – haha! Not a fan of colours on the bottom. I’d rather rotate colourful tops and keep the same colours of bottoms. Skirts however, sure!

LOVE colored skinnies but didn’t want to pay too much so I got BRIGHT blue at Target. I wore them with a printed top here: http://www.fitting-it-all-in.com/page/7/

I haven’t worn colored denim since about 8th grade. I think I had a pair of teal Guess ankle-zip jeans for spring. Oh, that was big time back then 🙂 Lol

I do love the coral and teal pants in this post!

I love wedges too, but being 5’10, I tower over my boyfriend. But I can’t give them up! I love photo #1!

I LOVE colored skinny jeans. I’ve been rocking them still 7+months pregnant. J Brand has some great mint colored ones that i love from last year and then actually target has some super cute colors for cheap (I bought 2 pair in larger sizes for my belly bump!). So fun!

I’ve totally been coveting a pair of red skinny jeans to wear with a basic black tee but I can’t find a pair that I love the fit. Still hoping to find a pair though!

i love the mint colored denim! i recently bought a pink pair but decided to return them because it’s already way hot down here in texas and i don’t think i’ll be wearing jeans much longer. but i really love the trend!

  20. lindsey on March 26, 2012 at 9:32 pm

love love love love those colored skinnies. it’s already 90 almost every day here, so I’m wary of buying them because I’m afraid I won’t get any wear out of them before they go out of style (I am just assuming that it will be a short lived trend). I did buy a pair of coral shorts that I’m excited to wear in similar fashion to the colored skinnies.

    and those Tory Burch wedges….SWOOOOOOOON.

I’m not brave enough to go for the colored jeans although I’ve definitely seen them around in stores.

  22. Ilana on March 26, 2012 at 10:01 pm

wedges are not cute. the word is ugly, the shoe is ugly. oof why would you wanna look like youve got club feet?? this is a trend I will never understand and can’t wait for it to die. on the Rhee hand I saw the most gorgeous pair of sea foam green jeans on no less than four different girls wandering around union square and even though I don’t wear jeans I’m obsessed with that trend. gorgeous for spring.

    • Ilana on March 26, 2012 at 10:03 pm

also call me crazy but if I’m spending the dollars on the Tory, then I kinda want the logo displayed. might be just me 😉

    • Carrie on March 27, 2012 at 10:39 am

LoL, love your honesty! I have really small ankles, so I feel like I look like I’m about to shatter ’em when I wear wedges.

  23. Sierra @ Posh Meets Pavement on March 27, 2012 at 2:56 am

We are on the same page here. When I first saw them, I thought there was no way I could get on board with the trend. I like to get my bottom half in fairly dark colors, but now I’m toying with the idea. Only if I find a great fit. Wedges are a must…I can always get on board with a wedge. The higher, the better.

  24. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on March 27, 2012 at 7:32 am

I bought some light pink jeans and Aerie and I love them! They’re so lightweight and perfect for spring! I wore them with a grey shirt last week, but I’m stumped about what else to wear them with other than basic tees. 😛

  25. Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves on March 27, 2012 at 9:19 am

I think I’m going to skip the colored jean trend. It’s so cute on some girls, but I don’t want any extra attention on my thighs! I’m all about colored skirts for work, though. I love, love, love a wedge. I just switched my closet from fall to spring and found 3 pair I bought last year that I had forgotten about. It was like Christmas!!

  26. Rachel on March 27, 2012 at 10:02 am

I LIKE the idea of colored demin, but I’m just not trendy enough to pull it off. I’ve thought about picking up a pair a few times when I was at Urban Outfitters or something, but I know that I’d buy them, wear them once, feel kind of silly, and then stuff them in the back of my closet. Along with my demin dress and my heels.

I cannot wear printed shoes. I have enormous feet, so patterns are not my friend. I live in my flip flops and TOMS all summer.

I just bought pink ones at Gap! They just did a thing on this on the Fashion Police last night-I think they are so flattering if you wear them with a neutral top!

  28. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on March 27, 2012 at 12:38 pm

I love colored denim! I currently own a bright berry color and a colbalt blue- the latter of which i actually posted a pic on my blog today and I paired them with stripes and then went for another pop of color in my necklace! I think they are so fun and am currently dying for mint, kelly green and dark plum! I think there are endless ways to wear them but I do generally like them paired with chambray shirts, stripes or coordinating colors. Such a fun trend!

  29. Helene @healthyfrenchie on March 27, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I thought the same thing when the trend started… And then I found a pair of purple skinny jeans at the charity shop and they are my go to outfit for the weekend. I usually pair them with a stripey tee-shirt 🙂
