DIY Halloween costumes: Sushi roll

When I was browsing online for family costume ideas, I fell in love with this one from Pottery Barn:

But at $49 + shipping, just for the baby’s costume, I thought it would be fun to try and make a version at home for less.

Bonus: I had the option of choosing what type of sushi she’d be (we lovingly called her little shrimp while she was growing in my belly) and add a more girly touch with a sparkly ginger and wasabi headband.

First step: get supplies at the fabric store. Nana came with me, and we picked up some green fabric, pink tulle, green sparkly stretchy headband material. With a 30% off coupon: $11

I ordered the shrimp from Amazon for $8

White onesies: 3 pack from Target: $10

Sewing kit: $3

Green pants and TOMs shoes: already owned

First step: I made the headband using this online tutorial. I haven’t sewn in a very long time, but the tutorial made it extremely easy. I cut the circle shapes using a coffee mug as a guide, and then did 10 double-layer petals. For the middle portion, I gathered extra tulle around a button, tied thread tightly around it and cut. The extra fabric went through the center of the petals.

Next: I sewed the shrimp onto the onesie in 3 places. It ended up being a wise choice because the first time Liv had her outfit on, she immediately tried to detach the shrimp and play with it.

Lastly, I made a tube of green fabric to go around the shrimp and attached it in the back. Liv was sleeping for the night when I was doing all of this, so I guessimated based on the size of the onesie. The green fabric ended up being a good size for a turban (oops), so I just reattached it the next day. If I were to do this again, I would have picked a stretchy green fabric.

The Pilot was a hibachi chef, so he just needed a chef outfit, mostly borrowed from Kyle. He borrowed the chef coat and hat, and I picked him up some chef pants,

and my tunic

at a local thrift store for $9. They have the rest of the chef costume available there (under “uniforms”) and many of them still had tags on them.

I wanted to be a hibachi restaurant server, so I just wore wunder under leggings and sandals, my hair in a bun with chopsticks.

Grand total for the family: around $35

Halloween 10

Did anyone make costumes this year?? I’d love to hear what your baby (or pet!) was for Halloween!

Such a cute idea! I need to make our costumes next year. My mom always made ours and they were always fabulous! I need a sewing machine!

I did the same thing my freshman year of college! I wore green meshy fabric around my middle, a white shirt, and a green visor (wasabi) with little orange pom pom balls glued on as the tobiko!! And chopsticks in my hair!

We did a very similar thing when our oldest was little. Except my grandma took an orange pillow and sewed diagonal stripes on it to look like salmon, and we strapped the pillow onto his back. I was wasabi (wore a green sweater), and my husband was soy sauce (black shirt with a red shirt underneath: Kikkoman) 🙂 You guys looked adorbs!

LOVE them!! We dressed up at work- I was Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I work at a jewelry store, so it was sorta a no-brainer. Easy to do with a black dress and some costume jewels from Target : )

The baby sushi costume is so cute!
My 14-month old son went as a scuba diver. We spray-painted a plastic water bottle in silver for the scuba tanks, taped it onto some straps, added a “hose” for the regulator (a pacifier), and he dressed in all black for his “wetsuit”. 🙂
Cost: $12 for a black onesie + leggings, $2 for the water bottle, and about $10 for the rest (spray paint, straps, tape). We are scuba divers, so we just wore our mask & snorkel that we already had. 🙂

The sushi is adorable! My little man was a garden gnome. Cost me $4 for the felt and the costume made it through a whole day of daycare!

Liv makes such a cute little sushi roll!
We always did DIY costumes when I was growing up, though I think I stumped my mom when I was 4 wanted to be a magical ballerina unicorn (best costume ever!) but she totally made it work.
This year I was I Chiquita banana, basically I wore a yellow shirt, lots of yellow accessories and printed out a big Chiquita sticker and stuck it to my shirt. Free costumes are my favorite!

Such a cute idea 🙂 Awesome way to save some bucks and add a personal touch! Shrimps are our favorite too!!!

Liv looks adorable, what a cute idea. I love the family theme idea, maybe we will do something like that next year. Our little guy was a train conductor. A lot of the costume was DIY and thrifted…saved us some cash and was fun to make.

I was a ladybug (red body suit/red short poofy skirt with black dots/long eyelashes/red headband with black dots). I teach at a church affiliated private school and we have to keep it respectable so this was simple ladybug not trashy party girl ladybug. My little ones loved the long eyelashes.

I love that tunic, Gina. I would totally wear that as a casual outfit.

I love them! I dressed up as the operation game and my boyfriend who is in medical school wore his scrubs and white goat and was the doctor. It was a lot of crafting but relatively cheap and definitely cuter than buying it!

I love the sushi roll! I went as 2 things this year and both were tedious! On Halloween, I was a Lichtenstein Pop-Art girl, so I had a lot of make-up to do (dots all over my face).. and for a Halloween party this weekend, my friend and I were Gotye/Kimbra, which took 5 hours of painting…
