Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Friday!! I’m so excited for the weekend. What do you have going on?? Any fun fitness activities or events? We don’t have any official plans, which is just how I like it. I’m excited to hang out with the fam, catch a reformer class, and madre is giving me a much-needed haircut. You know it’s time when I wear my hair in a messy bun every day.

P is still down with the sniffles, and I’m trying to keep the rest of the family from catching it. Fingers crossed that all the vitamins and probiotics will do their trick.

In standard Friday style, here are some faves from the week and around the web. I always love hearing about your faves, too, so please share something you’re enjoying in the comments section if you would like!

#1: Your amazing Winter Shape Up check-ins! Anne and I are so pumped that you’re enjoying the challenge so far, and I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying the videos, too. The week 2 schedule went out today to newsletter subscribers, and the Week 2 info will be here on the blog late Sunday night.

Celebrating Kyle’s bday!

Kyle, Meg, Me

It’s been a while since we’ve been around to celebrate Kyle’s bday, and I like to think we made up for lost time. The celebration was a huge Mexican feast at our house, and it ended with everyone around the kitchen island, laughing, and drinking tequila sangria. Madre and I split the food, so the prep was low-key. I made shrimp fajitas (shrimp, sweet onion, bell pepper, cumin, lime juice, lime zest, salt and pepper), garlic pinto beans in the Instant Pot, guacamole,

Guac

and said sangria.

Sangria and Guac

(You have to watch out for the fruit. It tastes like the sweetest fruit ever, and there’s a lot of tequila hiding in it. We have a lot of hilarious sangria night stories haha.)

Madre brought over Mexican rice, salsa, chile con pollo, shredded beef, and tortillas.

Meggie made the cake! Funfetti with chocolate frosting.

Kyle blowing out candles

The cousins ran around, everyone chatted and enjoyed each other’s company, and it was a wonderful evening. Every time I think about leaving Tucson it kind of makes me want to cry, but I’m trying to hold onto these awesome memories and enjoy the moments we’re fortunate to have here.

Meg and Liv holding candles

(Meg is the most gorgeous preg ever, and Baby EJ will be here ANY TIME NOW. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh)

P’s gymnastics moves. Liv has been perfecting her cartwheel, so this is P’s version: she’ll come into 3-legged downdog

P's gymnastics

and then stand up, both arms overhead. Not even a year and a half and she knows how to “stick it.”

It makes me laugh and cheer every.single.time.

I updated the goodies on my shop page and added some current faves, including some picks for my upcoming Hawaii trip.

Chef’s diets.

You know I pre-ordered this.

The core work at barre3. I love that the moves are functional and safe, and the instructors provide various layers and modifications. I’m working on safe core work from my PT -I still have ab separation, which has dramatically improved, but I’m still being conservative- and it’s nice to go through the class and be able to use my PT strategies without doing something totally different. In Orangetheory, I’ve been modifying all of the crunches and sit-up type exercises. I don’t think anyone cares, but I always feel weird doing something different than what we’re *supposed to* be doing.

This peanut butter truffle from Beyond Bread. It’s like a buckeye, and is the perfect size for a small sweet bite.

Loved reading this article, especially since we enjoy the show so much. Also, I think everyone is my favorite character.

Happy Friday, lovely friends! What was a highlight from your week? What are you looking forward to this weekend?

xoxo

P doing yoga is OMG too cute! One thing I seriously miss about Tucson is Beyond Bread. I used to go there once a week after the gym. So yummy good!

Beatiful Meg! <3 <3 and I was convinced P was in airplane or possibly rotated half moon.

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2017 at 10:17 am

that’s what it totally looks like, but she always does it when liv is doing cartwheels, so i’m thinking maybe it’s a half cartwheel 😉

The core work at Barre3 is my fave! Unfortunately Barre3 La Jolla will be closing in a couple of weeks (sad face), so I’ll have to find another place asap! Let me know if you have any recommendations in San Diego!

you have to go to barre body! (that’s where i taught when we lived there- it’s in PB)
i’m biased, but i really love their workout and flow to the class. the stretches are very dancer-y and it burns so good 🙂
please let me know what you think if you try it!!

No matter how good of a cook you are, everyone always falls back on fonfetti cake!! Because IT’S THE BEST!!!

    Hi Gina,

Do we just do Workout 2 once through or should we go through the whole thing a couple more times?

    Thanks,
    Faye

Hi Gina! I haven’t done a reformer workout in forever and have been craving one. Enjoy! Hope you enjoy all the family time the next few weeks. And send me a glass of that sangria! Happy Friday, friend! 🙂

Gina, Kamen wine… I think they have it at Total Wine (discount store, super good prices) for cheaper and you get 10% off for case purch. Just a suggest… thx for the tip on how good!! Bummer it’s not like a $20 bottle.

    • Fitnessista on February 4, 2017 at 1:00 pm

ahhhh i’m so glad you told me. i know- i was hoping it would be like 20-30. i wasn’t expecting 90 haha. i’m not a wine snob (like, i like pretty much all wine) and it was the best i’ve ever tasted. we’re going to order a few bottles because it was so so good

I have diastasis recti as well and always modify during Orangetheory. I work with a PT also and have my set of go to exercises. I was wondering what you usually do – I am always looking for more options!

    • Fitnessista on February 5, 2017 at 7:26 pm

i always do toe drops (or marches) making sure to keep my core pulled in and stabilized the whole time (and breathe!), hip raises or bridges, and heel slides. i’d love to hear what you’re doing, too! i get a little bored doing the same thing over and over hahah

      • Liz on February 8, 2017 at 7:20 am

I always forget about heel slides! I do a lot of leg lifts with the stabilizing leg bent and on the floor. And if everyone is doing bicycle crunches I bicycle my legs high up in the air with my back and head on the ground. My pt likes that one because you can play with the angle of your legs to make it harder/easier.

        • Fitnessista on February 12, 2017 at 8:22 pm

ohhh i like that! thank you!

Pure Barre core work leaves me dead! And I love it!
