Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Friday!! The weekend is heeeeeere. What do you have going on? Any fun fitness events or adventures? I’m excited that it’s a long weekend, and it’s already filled with some activities. We have a friend’s birthday party, I’m filming a ton of videos with Grant (wahoo!), and probably going to get caught up on some stuff around the house. Chores schmores.

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! It’s always fun to share new faves with each other, and I look forward to writing this post each week. I’ll add links or finds to it as the days go on, and love when you share your faves with me, too.

Here are some of the things I’m wearing, eating, reading and loving. 🙂

Self tanner. Ever since my spray tan (that didn’t get to see the Hawaii sun), I’ve been into having a non-Casper glow. It’s not really realistic for me to carve out time for a professional spray tan each week (let’s be real, it’s a wonder when I can blow-dry my hair), but it’s NBD to do it at home. I LOVE self tanner, but the ingredients can be a little sketch. In the past, I’ve used this one (and really liked it!), but decided to change up my game a little and read reviews online for newer versions.

I decided to try out this one, and I’m already a huge fan. The scent is mild and beach-y and the ingredients are awesome. I kind of suck at applying it myself (hi, streaky forearms) but these mitts are a gamechanger. I just use the mitts to blend everything in, and I only have ONE streaky spot. Winner winner, golden brown by dinner.

The Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Botanical Gardens.

Family at the Frida Kahlo Exhibit at the Botanical gardens

I’ve been wanting to check this out since we got here, since I’m a huge Frida Kahlo fan. (I actually wanted to dress baby Liv up as Frida Kahlo for Halloween and the Pilot was like “NO you can’t draw a unibrow on our baby.”) The Botanical Gardens in itself is a Tucson treasure, surrounded by lush and exotic desert plants.

Botanical gardens

And many unique species, not commonly found in Arizona.

Tom as a butterfly

The exhibit is a dedication to the Casa Azul (the bright blue house where Frida lived), including many of the plants that surrounded the property and were native to that area of Mexico. There are various special touches, like a replica art desk, and a play kitchen modeled after Frida’s own.

Tom and P

Liv especially loved the butterfly enclosure, which was warm and humid, with blooming flowers and exquisite butterflies.

When you leave, they have to do a “butterfly check” to make sure one’s not hitching a ride out on your shoulder.

Mara hoffman romper

(I’m obsessed with this jumpsuit. It’s from the Mara Hoffman sale, and I’ve received so many compliments on it. It’s really like wearing pajamas.)

We’ll definitely be back again before the exhibit is gone, and the gift shop alone is worth the trip!

This is an older post, but an important one.

A Valentine’s date to the Children’s Museum with these silly geese.

Liv and P at Children's Museum

We had breakfast here at home:

the girls at breakfast

and then set out on our little adventure. I told Liv we were going to run a couple of errands do something fun (because I wanted to surprise her) and the whole time she was like, “You’re driving to the museum. See, we’re by the museum. Are we going to the museum?” There’s no tricking that kid.

Me Jumping

Livi jumping

Speaking of Liv, I still can’t believe she lost her first tooth!! Needless to say, she was PUMPED that the Tooth Fairy made a visit. Her other bottom tooth is already wiggly, and it’s shocking to me that we’re in this stage of life.

This week has been a mix of workouts, including Pure Barre, barre3, (r)evolve cycling, and some strength workouts on my own. I feel like I’ve been all over the place fitness-wise, and kind of love not having a set routine.

Pure Barre

It keeps me on my toes, and I definitely don’t get bored.

Gym time

New podcasts to try.

Making these muffins today!

The Pilot needs these.

The Fitness Marshall could have a permanent spot on my Friday Faves lists. I still love doing his videos and get so excited when a new one is posted!

The Magnolia Story. I’m trying to take my time because I don’t want it to end. Chip and Jojo are the best.

The Magnolia Story

New Thrive Market finds!

This bone broth has a smooth flavor (with a little tang from the ACV) and is perfect warmed in a mug, and I’ve been using this ghee to cook pretty much everything.

Bone broth and Ghee

I also tried this mushroom coffee for the first time yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised.

Mushroom coffee

I’ve been interested in the healing and health effects of mushrooms for a while, but have hesitated because… mushrooms. (Don’t get me wrong, I love them on salads but felt weird about mushroom supplements haha.) I’m over it. This is SO good and tastes just like delicious coffee. I was planning on adding almond milk and maple syrup to it, but ended up drinking it straight-up.

Hope you all have a very happy Friday!
What’s something that you loved this week?! Any crazy Valentine’s stories?

xoxo

No plans this weekend. A potential date tomorrow. We’ll see if it happens especially with the big storm coming tomorrow. I need that self tanner. My tan has faded and I’m looking like casper the ghost. How often do you apply yours?

    • Fitnessista on February 17, 2017 at 10:45 am

Losing a tooth in our house is at the excitement level of an upcoming holiday. I had no idea that losing teeth was so much fun and exciting to some kids! We take a dollar bill, use Michaels spray glitter to add a shine and each girl always gets a sparkling dollar. Wheee!

    • Fitnessista on February 17, 2017 at 10:45 am

right?! it was such an exciting night! LOVE the sparkle idea, too!

  7. Sam @ Hygge Wellness on February 17, 2017 at 8:45 am

I love Chip and JoJo too! I bet that book is awesome. I love hearing about how you’re mixing up your workouts! I’m thinking of going sans-gym membership to mix it up more often. I love seeing all the different classes you try!

    • Fitnessista on February 17, 2017 at 10:44 am

it’s been so much fun to take so many classes since i’m usually teaching! i still have a traditional gym membership but maybe use it once or twice a week right now
      have a great weekend!

Hi Gina! Regarding Four Sigmatic and shrooms – it’s Shawn Stevenson’s go-to brand, so I got a bunch of boxes of it and haven’t tried it yet – but can’t wait to. He swears by it! And as far as self-tanner, seriously, putting a little on your face/neck/chest just makes you look SO much better. (Not you, but like people in general hahah) I am actually out of my favorite drug store brand tanner right now and miss it terribly! Happy weekend, friend! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on February 17, 2017 at 10:44 am

yes, that’s why i ordered it! (even though i tried the hemp force protein he loves and i hated it haha)
self tanner makes such a huge difference! i’m like i can never be without it now haha
      have a wonderful weekend!

  10. adrianna on February 17, 2017 at 7:31 pm

loving this week: its my student’s last week in clinic w/ me (last week of the quarter), and one of them got me a personalized coffee mug, s-bucks card, and chocolate! nearly died of happiness!
thinking about that butterfly exhibit gave me an anxiety attack. i’m terrified of them and moths. i don’t know how you guys did that!

  11. Julia on February 18, 2017 at 4:26 am

Thanks for the article on why kids can’t sit still. Really interesting and relevant. We’ve been making a concentrated effort to get our wiggly, active 5 year old able to focus his attention before starting kindergarten, and this is key!

BEAUTIFUL shots! and OooH that romper!

I love your pictures in Arizona. The sun, the plants, the flowers……..I can’t wait until Spring. I wish I lived somewhere that was warm, sunny and green all year round.

As a lover a Frida Kahlo, have you ever read “The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver? It’s about an American-born writer who grows up in Mexico and spends many of his formative years working in the house of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. It is one of my favorite books, very emotional and heartbreaking, but with a surprise and uplift at the end! I highly recommend it!

    • Fitnessista on February 20, 2017 at 1:44 pm

will download it now- thank you!!!!

  15. Katie @ Live Half Full on February 20, 2017 at 2:38 pm

I’m obsessed with Kombucha lately! After finishing up Whole30 a few weeks ago I’ve switched out my nightly glass of wine and it has me feeling so good!

  16. Meagan @ My Life as Mrs on February 20, 2017 at 4:23 pm

I read the Magnolia Story about a month ago and I loved it! I think I read it in about a 12 hour span though…

The Fitness Marshall videos are hilarious and really great. I’m obsessed with the Me Too vid.

  17. Cindy Love Childers on March 3, 2017 at 11:48 pm

Hey Gina! I always love your recommendations and I LOVE mushrooms + Coffee + happy to try the Bone Broth “Tea”…I’ve never used Thrive Market. I’m a few dollars away from checkout….can you recommend some other trusty standbys that you get when you shop online there. I don’t have any allergies and love what you recommend. Any favorites?

    • Cindy Love Childers on March 3, 2017 at 11:49 pm

sorry mean to say a few dollars from checking out with free shipping! It’s early here in the UK! 🙂

      • Fitnessista on March 4, 2017 at 11:49 am

        haha no worries!!
AHH i love so much from there. search for paleo chocolate and get the one with the red monkey on it. it’s AMAZING. i also love the primal kitchen ranch dressing, no miss nail polish, and the rare earth lavender candle

  18. Yvonne on May 2, 2017 at 4:26 pm

Ok so bone broth. I have a friend who went through a detox with it in efforts to heal her “leaky gut”. For someone just wanting not to add a healthy option to their diet how often would you recommend a mug of broth?

    • Fitnessista on May 2, 2017 at 5:38 pm

i will have it as often as every day, or as rarely as once or twice a week. it really depends on how you feel! i find myself craving it sometimes more often than others
