Friday Faves

Hey hey! Happy Friday! I’m so ready for the weekend. The Pilot flew nights this week, so it will be nice to have him back home when we’re awake. 😉 To break up the week and give myself a little something to look forward to, I asked our babysitter if she’d come over while I met up with some friends for girls’ night at Steel Magnolias. There was a cheese board and wine, so it was definitely a great night.

This weekend, I’m excited to take Livi to her school dance (what?), start planning our San Diego trip (there’s so much we want to do and so many faves to revisit!) and catch a yoga class. I’ve been testing out a lot of new workouts lately…and my legs and booty kind of hate me. I’m also looking forward to the Sunday episode of This Is Us, but will likely cry my face off.

I’d love to hear what you have on the agenda this weekend! Any fun events or fitness plans? I’d love to hear what you have going on.

Now it’s time for the usual Friday Faves party! Sharing some of the eats, reads, wears, and finds of the week. If you have any newfound or beloved faves, please share them in the comments below.

Beauty + Fashion:

-Dip powder nail polish. I was chatting with a girl at one of the Pilot’s work events and we quickly found out we had a scary amount of things in common. She also uses a lot of natural skincare products, gave me a ton of hair tips (she has super healthy mermaid hair) and we parent in a similar fashion. I asked her about her nails, and she told me about dip polish, which is another nontoxic way to do your nails. (I’d been using the Sally Hansen gel polish, which lasts really well but ends up chipping eventually.)

I was instantly intrigued, so I ordered a kit of the Revel dip polish. A kit is $50, which seems like a lot, but if you consider that each trip to the salon for dip polish is $30-40, it pays for itself quickly.

You guys.

Revel nail dip polish review

New nail obsession.

I read the instructions and watched a couple of YouTube videos which took away some of the intimidation factor. Once I committed, it took 15 minutes. When I was finished, my nails were completely dry and shiny. In 15 minutes! Usually I try to wait for a while for my Sally Hansen polish to dry (walking around with claw hands), and will dent or scratch them within the first 15 minutes. The dip nails are pretty much indestructible. I’ve had them on for a week, and while I have a little bit of nail growth, they look pretty much the same as they did the first day. LOVE. I’m excited to get a few more colors!

Dip polish

Ordered this bandeau top and these swimsuit bottoms in red for spring. Fingers crossed the ol’ scar is concealed…

Eats and recipes:

Guacamole salsa.

Guac salsa

I found this at Target and knew I had to give it a try! (It was around $3 and has awesome simple ingredients.) It reminds me of the green salsa served with street tacos in Tucson, and the green salsa from La Parilla that we’d get with the mushroom queso. It’s the best on eggs. wrapped up in some type of tortilla.

Simple Mills pizza dough (I order from Thrive Market). It’s perfect for quick, healthy pizzas. I made one for myself with spinach, olives and shredded goat gouda + one for the kiddos with cheese and prosciutto.

Simple mills

Can’t wait to try this slow cooker recipe.

That nail polish looks awesome! I have never seen This Is Us, but more and more think I need to check it out. Hope you have a great weekend!

I’m so curious about that polish. I’ll have to find some videos. Two questions, what color are you wearing in the photo, and how do you remove it?

That nail polish. You did it yourself?! WOW! I used Sally Hansen for a while too, but it makes my nails peel. It’s weird. I totally want to try the dip kind now.

The boyfriend and I will be watching the Super Bowl but I will definitely be catching up on This Is Us on Monday. I think I’ll be too tired after the Super Bowl to watch anything else. LOL

  6. Kristin on February 2, 2018 at 10:44 am

What color did you pick for the nail polish? I usually get the dip nail polish at the nail salon, but didn’t realize I can buy it. I like that color!

I’m totally cheering for This is Us–and for the fact that there will be episodes on Sunday AND Tuesday!

  8. Kim N on February 2, 2018 at 11:30 am

Did you actually rough up your nails per the video instructions? I’m intrigued! Does it really dry that quickly?

  9. Melissa @fitnessnycblog on February 2, 2018 at 1:27 pm

Your nails (and ring) look awesome. I’m definitely going to be watching the superbowl, which explains why I am over a season behind in This is Us!

I am both looking forward to and dreading This is Us on Sunday night. Just seeing the previews for it after the last episode had me crying crocodile tears.

SUPER intrigued by the nail kit!! How was removing the polish? I HATE the way gel peels away and makes my nails seem weaker and am wondering if this is better?

omg the polish kit is a score!! I’ve been paying $40 for dipped nails every time I get them done. What color is the pale pink you chose? How do you remove it? It’s quite a process at the salon…

    THIS IS US for sure!

I had no idea this is us is on sunday… thanks for the heads up. I also just stumbled upon thredup’s goody box and ordered one immediately! I haven’t got my styled picks yet, but I love the idea of stitch fix (but not the price tag). So I’m ecstatic. To try the goody box.

Hi Gina! Happy Friday! I’m going down to see my in-laws in San Diego this month and can’t wait! Regarding the nail polish, I’ve been getting SNS powder dipped nails at the salon for the last couple of months, and they are FAR superior to gel nails. They last, they look better, and the process is much kinder to the nails and skin. So cool you’re doing it at home!

Oh my gosh, I love the article featuring Kyle. You always make him seem like such an awesome chef – and it sure sounds like he is! Intrigued by the dip polish.

That nail polish looks awesome. Update us how it wears and how you remove. Super bowl is on in the afternoon here. I’m going shopping and hoping for light crowds! I watched this is us the first season but haven’t dove into ththe second. Maybe I’ll just binge watch it all! Happy weekend!

ok so saturday night i noticed it was lifting around the edges, so i decided to take it off and see how difficult it was. it was a pain, but it wasn’t too bad. you have to file the top coat off, then soak in pure acetone for about 10 mine. i used a little nail file and didn’t do the best job, so soaking took a long them. then it came right off! i redid them (i guess i didn’t use enough of the activator the first time) and i’m going to see if that helps the edges from lifting
did you binge watch this is us?!
      xoxo

When I get them done at the salon, they are super thick before they file them down a bit. Are yours really thick?

        • Fitnessista on February 12, 2018 at 12:08 am

ok so i got mine done on friday for our trip, and also because i wanted to see how the pros do it. #1: it took FOREVER. like over an hour. it was painful to wait that long!!
she did file them so they’re much thinner than mine were. i’m going to try filing them next time to see if that helps. she did a great job, but i have a crack in one of the nails already that’s driving me crazy
