From pin to life

Like I’m sure many of you do, I have Pinterest boards for everything: recipes to try, fun stuff to do with Liv, ideas for the Pilot, workouts, quotes and motivation, etc. I also have a style board that I pin to occasionally- I especially love outfit and hair ideas.

The hair ideas have been fun to play with and replicate –especially since madre is a braiding ninja- but I haven’t done anything with the outfit ideas.

I almost never use photos for style inspiration because it’s kind of intimidating for me to remember what kind of top I saw with what jacket and where the heck to find the different pieces. I’d rather just play closet roulette and see what happens.

Livi and I have been to the mall a lot together since she’s been born, more frequently when she was only a 4-6 weeks old and I wanted to walk around and get out of the house. We’d meet up with friends, or just walk around, just the two of us. It’s safe, air-conditioned, and was a great opportunity to learn how to use the stroller. Even with all of our shopping adventures, I’ve only picked up a few things, mostly because it’s been challenging to learn how to dress for breastfeeding, and I wear athletic clothes or pajamas about 90% of the time.

Now that spring is here, I’m excited to use my boards on Pinterest for inspiration in the rare occasion that I wear “real” clothes 😉

I thought it would be fun to replicate a couple of outfits, especially since they look so polished, and find actual pieces similar to the ones in the photos. This way, if I want to wear my own version, I already know where to hunt for the pieces.

Here are a few of the outfits I’ve pinned, and the deets on where to find something similar:

Top: Francesca’s Collections, $34.00

Shorts: Dillard’s, $98.00

Sandals: Aldo, $80.00

Necklace: Express, $24.50

Shorts: Express, $59.90

Shoes: Aldo, $60

Top: Urban Outfitters, $34

Jacket: J Crew, $298 (not sure I’d wear a jacket with this- especially since it’s roasting in AZ already)

Fringe necklace: Anthro, $58 (compared to $350 for the original)

Purse: F21, $27.80

Both the sweater and shoes in this pic are from J Crew, but I especially love the funky shoes!! The originals are from F21, but can’t find anything like them :/

Do you use photos for style inspiration or just do your own thing?

The queen of this is my friend, J– if you haven’t checked out her blog, it’s amazing. I especially love it because she shops at mall stores (like me) and puts together extremely wearable, gorgeous outfits.

xoxo

I love those lace shorts from Dillards – so cute!

I occasionaly look at photos for style inspiration … but it ends up being more of a “wow I love that look, let me admire it … and then I’ll keep wearing what I always do”. Hahaha I hope to be able to mimic some of my fave looks one of these days. It would sure help my work wardrobe 🙂

Haha yup sounds about right. I love the looks on my pinterest board, but never do anything with them, fail!

I wish I was a master at braiding like your mama!

I love J! She has inspired me to recreate outfits without buying anything and just looking at the clothes you already have in a new way.

I sometimes use photos as inspiration! I do get ideas from sites like pinterest and then just do my best to recreate them with what they have at the stores here. I love pinterest! I could pin all dayyy

What fun shorts! Not sure they’re super practical for me but sometimes practical-ness doesn’t matter and it’s about dreaming and having fun and…pinning! Girl, I am so addicted to Pinterest! I love it! It’s done more to recharge my creative juices the past year or so than just about anything I can think of!

I haven’t even tried to be fashionable lately. I live in yoga pants and tshirts most of the time. Although a few weeks ago I did buy my first pair of jean shorts in um 7 years! I wore capris or jeans all summer long because I didn’t want people to see my casper the friendly ghost white legs, but I decided that people will just have to deal with it because it’s been hot.

Thanks for sharing your friend J’s blog- I follow so many fashion sites/pinterest obsessed, but its disheartening when every shirt costs $400 (or is from a store outside of Canada).

exactly. as much as i would love a $1,000 burberry coat, it’s not happening.

I <3 J's Everyday! I check it… every day 🙂 I've gotten so many ideas for how to rework or revamp what I already own (either by styling my same pieces a different way or by incorporating one new, inexpensive item). Her blog reminds me of Lucky Magazine (I get the same type of inspiration there) but in a fab daily form!

When I lived in York, it was thrift shop heaven. There is a whole street devoted to various ‘second hand’ shops, but the stuff in there is mostly new. York has a large, wealthy community of non-working wives that frequently wear something ONCE (e.g. to the races or a party) then give it to their favourite charity. I got a Gucci handbag and a Versace bodysuit for 2 pounds each. Through heavy and enjoyable exploration, I discovered that the wealthy women gave their best stuff to the ‘Pets that Need Vets’ charity. That shop was beyond amazing. The week after the yearly York races (to which the Queen sometimes goes) was a GOLDMINE. Unfortunatley I could not bring even 1/4 of what I bought back to NZ.

But, I digress. I can’t work Pinterest. It daunts me. I don’t get it. I’ll have to give it another go. I’ve set up an account but it scares me when I try to work it.

Summary: if you want amazing stuff, but don’t have a large budget, find a wealthy area and check the thrift shops.

I love love love those lace shorts. I haven’t seen anything like those! I feel like I am not patient enough to be a great thrift shopper. It’s something I need to work on! I like to shop fast!

I have a terrible habit of seeing a photo of someone skinnier/prettier/cooler than me, and then buying the clothes that they’re wearing because I think it’ll instantly make me skinnier/prettier/cooler. I do it with elite runners all the time, not just fashionable people! Oh, and I do it with haircuts.

That makes me sound like I have major self esteem issues, but I really don’t!

Try gap or loft for colored shorts!:) love them and they have great varieties of different lengths!

I am not a fashion maven by any means, but I do love clothes and Pinterest has been a great resource for me. I’ve found some things I’ve liked and tried to find things that look similar—it’s all trial and error, but it’s a start!

LOVE that first outfit – I’m all about the crochet trend!

  14. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on April 12, 2012 at 8:16 am

To be honest my fashion sense has taken a total nosedive this year – I’m always wearing leggings and long Lulu hoodies or cardigans. 😛 I love all those outfits though – the white ruffled shorts are adorable!

I do a lot of pinning for style inspiration. Even if i don’t go hunting for similar pieces, it definitely helps me take my outfits in a direction I’d previously stayed away from- like neon or pastel colorblocking. I figure if they can do something gorgeous, I can probably find a way to make it work!

I’m now obsessed with your friend J’s website. So many cute outfits for cheap!

  17. Hawley on April 12, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Shoes in the pic with the pink shorts are Miu Miu knockoffs from Spring 11. You can probably find something similar on Ebay!

    • Fitnessista on April 12, 2012 at 10:26 pm

      awesome-thank you!

I just recently started to do this! I actually bit the bullet and attempted my first pinterest inspired hairdo…the up-knot. Turned out really well and was super easy!!! Going to be doing more of this as I think style/beauty is one area in my life that needs more attention

  19. Kelli on April 13, 2012 at 11:41 am

The adorable shoes are Miu Miu from a couple of years ago. I would guess higher end consignment or ebay, etc would be great places to look for them. I love them & drooled heavily over them when they came out. They had a pair that had cats all over them that were sooo cute! I’m a dog person all the way, but the shoes were too cute.
I know Nordstroms had some very similar that were Louboutin around Christmas. Out of my budget, but fun to look at.

I owe you a long overdue “hello”!! I hope you and Pilot are so happy with your new bundle of joy!! 🙂 I also love that first outfit with the aqua shirt, very cute! Thanks so much for the shout-out, and hope everything is going great for you!
