From Zero to Sixty

in 2 seconds…. 🙂

Hi friends 😀 How was your day? Hope you had a wonderful Wednesday. Thanks again to my Pilot love for hooking it up with a guest post while I went to my first day at the new j-o-b. The bummer news is that he’s actually in the emergency room right now! He ate some foul Valdosta tuna (I know how that feels) and had a horrible reaction. He just texted to say that he’s ok –I was worried sick- so thank goodness. He needs to hurry up and get to Tucson with me.

So work today was pretty much amazing.

I packed up some food to take with me for the day, because I wasn’t sure how long I’d be there. I’m going to be teaching at the resort, but right now I’m taking classes during my shifts instead of teaching to learn as much as I can about each class that’s offered.

Today I packed up:

lunch

-Two amazeballs

Broccoli slaw topped with two bean-beet burgers

slaw

(Hummus, nutritional yeast and Dijon sauce)

Blueberry banana Sun Warrior smoothie

smoothie

-Clif mocha gel (ate)

-Coconut water (did not)

Breakfast:

rito

(egg-rito in a brown rice tortilla w TJs green salsa)

First day of work shot 🙂

me

I only end up wearing that outfit for an hour or so, since I changed into my uniform and took the following classes:

-Cardio Circuit (I observed this one)

Stretch – LOVED, loved this class. It was sad because in the the beginning of class, a bird flew into the windows… and then died 🙁 Some of the guests were looking at the bird, I almost started crying, and then the instructor (who is a total sweetheart and yoga extraordinaire) handled it so beautifully. She said, “Ok, let’s go ahead and start class, but before we begin, let’s all put our hands together in front of our heart and say a prayer for the bird. It is transforming from a bird energy to another energy.” I learned so many new stretches during the class and my tight hips were very thankful.

buddha

Zumba – I took Zumba today (took it easy for this one) and am supposed to start teaching Zumba at the resort within 2 weeks! Ballertastic.

Bellydance- This was another one of my favorites today. Bellydance isn’t my forte (but I’m working on getting better) and it was way more challenging and fun than the FitTV Shimmy shows I used to do 😉 We got to wear coin skirts and play with veils.. and it was awesome.

-Water workout- This one was a doozy. As you guys know, I can’t swim, which makes this class a beast. I love going to the pool, but I prefer to be next to it or on it, rather than in it 😉 It was a workout enough trying to keep my head about water. I really enjoyed the class minus the song “Wooly Bully” (looooooathe!!!) and the one-piece red Speedo I have to wear. I’ve always told myself I’d never post a swimsuit pic on the blog –I think they’re unnecessary and will only encourage comparison and creepers- but I may have to make an exception for the Speedo. It’s pretty hilarious. desert

Then home!!

It was a long day, but I enjoyed and savored every second. I’m very humbled and excited to be working with such an incredible group of instructors- I’ll learn a lot fo sho.

The title of this post came from the fact that I haven’t taught since September (besides DT), and now I’m 100% submerged in it again! It feels so nice 🙂 A few Tucson bloggies have emailed to see if they could take my classes- I’ll be teaching open-to-the-public Zumba and strength classes (2 strength, 1 Zumba) starting a week from Monday. Email me if you’d like the deets 🙂

I’m off to do laundry, make some FOOD and chill 😀

Enjoy your night and I’ll see ya in the morning with a discussion post!

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: Are you a swimmer? Is there hope for me? Also, what’s your least favorite song? “Wooly Bully” is in my top five, along with "Celebration” and “Raspberry Beret.”

Gina! Congrats on your day! yeehee! Where are you teaching? I go to UA and just stumbled upon your blog in December or so with no idea you live here! On the whole swimming ordeal, of course there’s hope for you! I played water polo in junior high, hs, and last year at UA , so if you need help staying a float, i’ll gladly hang out pointers 🙂

  2. Ruth on April 28, 2011 at 4:07 am

Congrats! Sounds like you had a great day!

Can’t wait to hear the tales when you start teaching!

  3. ellalinea on April 28, 2011 at 4:34 am

I’d love to take Zumba with you! Too bad I live in Europe 😉

Glad the first day at work went well – sounds like a fun day (aside from the poor bird!) Hope the Pilot feels better soon!

Yay for your first day! Must have been fun taking all of those classes in one day to see how everything goes at the resort! I can’t imagine being a participant in so many classes every day though!! I am so excited for you.. and loooove jumping pics!

    Hi Gina!
What a fun and exhausting day! And the bird story was very touching…

Years ago, I signed up for a lap swim at the high school pool. I started swimming my heart out, splashing around like a drowning monkey. I was sure I had swam for 30 minutes at least. but when I looked at the clock, it was only about 10 minutes. Yikes!

Yeah, swimming isn’t my strong point either.

Mony-mony, Billy Idol’s version or the original doesn’t matter. I groan loudly at whenever it starts.

    Have a great day!

Ok Wooly Bully is a LEAST fave song of mine too! lol! That song, I mean how was that even allowed to be a song, lol!

CONGRATS on your first day! So awesome girl! Sounds like this job is going to be amazing for you!

THe swim class, yeah I would not be loving to teach that class, but the others sound great!!!

    xoxo <3

  8. Eleonora on April 28, 2011 at 6:22 am

Oh, there is definitely hope! I could barely float until October 2008. Now I can swim all styles, including some butterfly stroke (although I’m spent after 1 lap!). Just signed up for adult swimming classes at my local pool. I still go to classes because I enjoy it, but I’d say that the real improvement happened in 3-4 months (group classes, twice a week). I guess hiring a trainer for some individual classes could be the most time-effective solution!

  9. Stephanie on April 28, 2011 at 6:40 am

My least favourite songs are the really drippy ones. Every December, I thank the universe that I only have to hear “Christmas Shoes” for one month out of the year.

re: swimming, maybe it’s different because my hubby was in the navy…but there are always AMAZING adult swimming classes at the base pool. You can take one-on-one lessons so that you don’t feel so self-conscious.

  10. Jessica @ Jessica Balances on April 28, 2011 at 7:15 am

Congrats on an amazing first day of work! 🙂 I love what the yoga instructor said about the bird because I would have been really sad, too. <3

  11. Susanne on April 28, 2011 at 7:23 am

I loathe Wooly Bully. It’s horrible. One of my least favorite songs is Don’t Worry Be Happy. Gah!!! I can’t stand it!!!

  12. Lauren on April 28, 2011 at 7:28 am

I hate the song “Holiday,” by Madonna, it is actually the only song I told the DJ at my wedding he could not play, even if someone requested it (I don’t see why anyone would, but I just wanted to make it clear to him). I also hate “We Are Family” and “Dancing In the Street.”

  13. Beth on April 28, 2011 at 7:30 am

Congrats on a great first day!! Enjoyed reading pilot’s post yesterday. Hope he’s ok… food poisoning is the WORST!! My least favorite song is “Love Shack.” CAN’T STAND IT!

  14. jodie on April 28, 2011 at 7:43 am

Congrats on your first day. Love the nail polish you are wearing.

  15. Donna on April 28, 2011 at 7:43 am

The first song that comes to mind for worst songs is 99 Red Balloons, for some reason I just hate that song and my whole family knows it, so whenever it comes on they blast it and it drives me crazy. I’m with you on Celebration, that’s another one.

  16. Annie D @ Annie's Simple Life on April 28, 2011 at 7:46 am

Holy WOOLY-BULLY batman, you had a busy day!!!! I’m exhausted from just reading it!!!!!

  17. Pure2raw twins on April 28, 2011 at 7:50 am

YAY so happy the first day went so well! So fun learning all those classes. I am the same way about water, I rather just causally go in if I want. The funny thing is I used to love swimming when I was younger.

  18. pawsitivelife on April 28, 2011 at 8:13 am

I am a horrible swimmer. One of my arms is much stronger than the other so I end up swimming in circles :). I hope there is hope for you because that would mean there is hope for me. Adult swim classes?

  19. Katie on April 28, 2011 at 8:27 am

Hi Gina! I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time now and it’s hands down my fave one — it’s the 1st thing I read online every morning! But I never comment so I thought I should start so I am not a weirdo just reading it. LOL

Anyways, congrats on your new job and I wish you the best of luck. I really enjoy all of your stories and I’ve learned so much about healthy foods and fitness through your site — thank you.

    Have a fabulous day! 🙂

I actually knew how to swim in high school –it was part of our P.E. in San Diego, but I totally forgot! Not like riding a bike I guess –I can still flail around and keep my head above water, just freestyle is impossible for me! I’m taking lessons again this summer. We’ll see if they “take” –it didn’t last summer.

  27. Mo on April 28, 2011 at 9:27 am

I took water aerobics with my Mom for awhile – she needed the exercise and this was the easiest on her body – she has fibromyalgia. Well, I was the youngest participant by at least 30 years. Somehow, my Mom and I ended up on opposite sides of the pool, and the instructor asked us to grab a partner to do a little dosey doe . . . I’m 5 foot 2 and small – and a very solid lady took me by the arm and swung me around in the water like a rag doll – pretty darn funny! (And traumatizing as well!) The song playing at the time was the Beach Boys, “Cocomo”. To this day – I hate that song! Take care – hope the pilot is feeling better.

  29. Stephanie @ Vegetarian Bakeaholic on April 28, 2011 at 9:56 am

Definitely not a swimmer. I used to love to do those Shimmy workouts on TV! haha

  30. Kellyim on April 28, 2011 at 9:56 am

Congratulations on having what sounds like a super fun first day!

I’m so surprised that you didn’t grow up doing swim team, like almost every other person I’ve ever known from Tucson (including me!). So I’ve been swimming pretty much my whole life, and I’ll just encourage you to stick with it! I’m sure you’ll improve since you’re so athletic anyway, and it’s such a great way to get your workout in outside even when it’s a hot day in the desert. I live in Rhode Island now and I really miss swimming laps in outdoor pools.

Oh, and Tainted Love and Rock the Casbah are two songs I cannot STAND!

  31. Kari on April 28, 2011 at 9:59 am

    Hi Gina!
congrats on the new job 🙂
teaching a variety of classes soudns awesome. what ever happened to opening your dance trance studio? did you put that on the back burner for a bit??

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2011 at 10:12 am

nope- we did classes from jan to march and are starting at a new, bigger studio in may

  33. Errign on April 28, 2011 at 10:31 am

I am nahhhhht a swimmer for exercise. I like to splash around for a few minutes and then settle down with a book. 🙂

Sorry to hear about the Pilot. Hopefully he’s feeling better now. I’m glad I didn’t read this last night because I tried fresh tuna steaks for the 1st time & I probs would have wussed out!

  34. Morgan on April 28, 2011 at 10:36 am

Congrats on the new job! I hope you love it!!

As far as gym-phobias, I feel the same way. With 60 lbs to lose, I have to do something though! So instead, I’m making my own gym at home 🙂 I purchased an elliptical a few years ago and with a few bands, Exercise OnDemand and a couple free weights, there really is no necessity for a monthly gym membership!

  35. Morgan on April 28, 2011 at 10:38 am

Oops my comment went to the wrong post! Sorry!! 🙂

  36. Leslie on April 28, 2011 at 10:48 am

You HAVE to post your pretty purple nailpolish color!!! (it matched your smoothie so well, haha)

  37. Yvette on April 28, 2011 at 1:16 pm

I just took a Total Immersion freestyle workshop and I loooooved it! I am now at the YMCA everyday workin’ on the drills they taught me and having a blast. I was not a swimmer before this class. I could make my way around the pool — especially swimming under water but couldn’t freestyle or anything else to save my life. I am going to Hawaii in a few months and want to be able to swim when I’m there! You can google their website and check out this video that shows the technique at its most perfect. (I am in no way affilated with theses guys — just drank the kool-aid and loved it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJpFVvho0o4

  38. CINDY on April 28, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Hi Gina – I love your smoothie to go container. Is the bottom part plastic or glass? and where did you get it? – it is the perfect size and I have been looking for one 🙂
    Thanks.
    Cindy

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2011 at 10:41 pm

it’s from tj maxx- it’s glass and i looooove it 🙂 hope you can find it there! if not, check amazon

  39. Clare @ Fitting It All In on April 28, 2011 at 2:42 pm

How fun to try all those classes! I am NOT a swimmer. Yes I can swim, but I have zero technique and am no good at it. One of my goals this summer is to learn to swim properly so I can do triathlons!

  40. Dee on April 28, 2011 at 3:15 pm

I like how your instructor handled the bird incident! A similar thing happened to a friend recently, he witnessed a bird hit a window and die, and then, a fellow bird got very distressed and kept trying to feed its friend to get it to move and got more and more frantic when it didn’t. The saddest story ever, and makes me understand Buddhist thinking more, about honoring every living thing.

  41. Bonnie on April 28, 2011 at 6:07 pm

New reader here– love everything I’m reading! So, where did you get that container for your smoothie? Looks so convenient (love your nail polish too)! Also, on some of your other posts, it looks like you have some sort of reusable straw for your smoothies– details please?? Thanks so much!

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2011 at 10:30 pm

i got it at tj maxx- it’s glass and i take it with me somewhere almost every day.
the glass straws are from glass dharma.. you can buy them online 🙂
thanks so much for reading my little blog!

  42. Lisa on April 28, 2011 at 7:28 pm

Just get a few private swim lessons & you’ll get the hang of it. I was born swimming I think, lifeguarded through highschool & college years, & a summer at the beach. I can’t stand any rap; grates on my nerves. Hope the pilot is ok. You’ll have to fill me in on where he ate; I’ve never had food poisoning, knock on wood. And by the way I’m sure you look like a Baywatch Babe in your red suit, Hello! Why don’t you sew one of those bras on the inside; that’ll work.

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2011 at 10:28 pm

he ate at two friends and it happened because he had tuna that wasn’t defrosted all the way 🙁
      hahah that’s a great idea!! maybe i will. i have a uni-boob in it

  43. Claire on April 28, 2011 at 8:29 pm

I love that your nails match your smoothie! Too cute! I am a swimmer, but I have been since age 2 (when I wouldn’t put my face in the water for 4 months…and then went on to swim through college), but there is hope! I used to teach adult swim lessons and adult private swim lessons at my local YMCA, and if you have someone that works with you, you can learn. The hardest part is learning how to keep balance while you’re moving.

I’m also wondering how you became a fitness instructor? I’m currently working on my certification to become a personal trainer (through ACE), but would love to explore teaching classes! Did you get certified or did you just apply for jobs and demonstrate your sweet skills? I love taking classes, but not sure how to go about teaching them too. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2011 at 10:05 pm

i’m certified through AFAA- ACE is a good one too!
