Functional, stylish workout gear from Old Navy

When you look at the workout pants/shorts area of my closet, you’ll see a common theme: black stretchy.

Closet 1 of 1

I wear lots and lots of black stretchy pants.

For Zumba, I’ll clown it up with as many neon color combos and patterns as I can find (if it has the Zumba logo on it, it matches, yes?) but for everything else, you can usually find me wearing black bottoms. I like black because it matches everything and hides sweat well, which is important when you’re teaching and all eyes are on you.

So when Old Navy offered a $50 gift card to try out their Active by Old Navy line, I jumped at the chance to try out some new gear and had one mission: colored bottoms.

Wall 1 of 1

First of all, I think I’ve been living under a rock because I had no idea Old Navy had such an incredible line of active gear.

Wall 1 of 1 4

Zip-ups, compression, yoga, sports bras, running shorts, lightweight sneaks- I was blown away by the variety, along with the low prices.

$8 sports bras?! I was tempted to buy 6 and call it a day.

Instead, I browsed around for a little while

and found 9 pieces to try on, including a gorgeous black and white striped dress that was $19.

Fitting room 1 of 1

One thing I noticed straight away was the quality of the fabrics. For the prices, I was half-expecting them to be flimsy and poorly-constructed, but instead, they were made from lush fabrics with intricate detail. I’m a pretty tough critic when it comes to workout clothes -I wear it so often to teach- and was instantly impressed. Another happy surprise? The pieces were true to size, which made the fitting process much easier.

The goods:

Gear 1 of 1

 Compression capris in retro violet

Striped bubble active tank in black

Compression jacket in retro violet

2 molded high-impact sports bras (couldn’t find the link online)

The total:

Receipt 1 of 1

5 pieces for $72! I also got the striped dress in a separate transaction- can’t wait to wear it.

Of course, I had to take out some of my new gear for a spin:

Gear 1 of 1 4

(25 minutes on the treadmill, some planks and squats)

Gear 1 of 1 2

The verdict?

LOVED.

The molded sports bra kept everything in place during cardio and sweat showing (which is my main complaint with colored pants) wasn’t a prob at all. I even did the “water test” and splashed a little water on my leg to see how the crops would do during an intense teaching class, and the water quickly absorbed into the material and dried. I also like the smooth waistband of the pants and hidden pocket, which is perfect for a yoga class. I did notice that the fabric on these is extremely thick, so I wouldn’t recommend them for running (I prefer lighter fabrics with mesh ventilation behind the knees), but they are great for strength, cardio and yoga.

As far as the tank goes, I can tell it’s going to get a lot of use, and at the price ($10!) I may have to get a couple of different colors. The fabric is extremely thin and light -perfect for Tucson summers- and even has cute cutout detail in the back.

You can check out the entire line here- it’s up to 40% off until the 16th! Also, Old Navy offers free shipping on orders over $50.

Have you tried the Old Navy Active Line? If so, what’s your fave? Do you wear colored workout bottoms or notsomuch?

Hope you have a very happy Friday!

xoxo

I’ve got several pairs of workout pants from Old Navy and really like them. I’ve got to get some of those bras! What a great deal, can’t beat $8.

Such cute outfits! I had no idea Old Navy had activewear either until I started seeing all the reviews for it this week online. Their prices are great, it’s good to know their materials are good quality!

    Hello

I love their stuff. It’s funny to see your pics because I just bought the exact same compression jacket and capris in retro violet. I also got a couple bubble tanks. They are so cute. I really love the fun colors. Because I wear workout clothes 90% of the time, I like them to look fun and not so boring.

I don’t get why ppl spend so much at places like lululemon?

I would never have thought of Old Navy for workout gear before now, but it looks so cute, and we all know Old Navy has great prices. I might have to stop in there sometime soon and check it out. Thanks for the review!

My sister kept telling me over and over that I simply MUST try the cropped workout leggings from Old Navy and I finally bought a pair last weekend. They are comfy without being baggy but tight enough to feel supportive during a workout. They also don’t slip or move, I even slept in them last night! And they were only 18 bucks! Sold.

    Awesome workout clothes! 🙂

I have some coloured bottoms from Lulu that I love! I have a purple pair that are reversible so can also be worn as black. I have some really old workout tops from Old Navy that I got many years of use out of; this post made me want to go get some new items from them! And I also have that B&W striped dress! So cute I love it 🙂

I loved the bubble top so much so I stopped by Old Navy today on the way home! I ended up with 2 pairs of the pants (grey/orange and black/green, they had drawstrings so they won out for me), 2 bubble tops in purple and black, a pair of grey yoga pants, and the black and white polkadot top in the picture of the dress you tried on 🙂

Thanks to your reviews, I have some great new exercise gear! Thanks again!

I love Old Navy’s active wear. It has definitely gotten better over the past couple of years. I actually bought that same black and white dress too!!! Then went back and got the red and navy one 🙂 They will look great with boots and then transition into spring with some flats! Love me some Old Navy!

I have gray, black, and navy bottoms but not much else. I have one pair of lounge pants or yoga pants from Old Navy but nothing else.

  14. Brenda on January 11, 2013 at 11:27 pm

I have the same bra! Love everything about it. Due to your post, I want to go to Old Navy Right Now! They should have sent you a bigger gift card. : )

  15. Jess on January 11, 2013 at 11:36 pm

How many blogs are we going to see with the same exact post?? -_- bored

    • Michele on January 12, 2013 at 11:06 am

Yes, Old Navy has been quite busy sending out gift cards. 🙂 Nothing against Gina, but I guess that’s what happens when all the big bloggers get the same perks and we read all of their blogs. It’s ok, though, it makes me want to check out Old Navy’s stuff.

  16. Bek @ Crave on January 12, 2013 at 1:27 am

I wish there was an Old Navy in Aus! You’re rocking the purple pants 😉

  17. Jenny on January 12, 2013 at 6:30 am

I love the capris! May have to go pick up a few pairs!

I also was catching up on my blog reading this morning and loved the staycay post ending. I am a veterinarian as well, and I love the explanation of the little boy. Thank you. I have never heard that. It is something that will help with those difficult times I have to endure with my job, Thank you again!

Very smart advertising Old Navy. You got me. I am 27 and haven’t been in Old Navy in 10 years because I assumed it was for a younger demographic. I will now go this weekend.

  19. Adriana on January 12, 2013 at 9:57 am

I agree with previous comments that all these reviews are getting tedious and making me NOT want to go to Old Navy. However, I realize this isn’t your fault; it’s Old Navy’s for creating the advertising campaign. I’m just mentioning it on the off-chance that someone from their marketing department is reading the comments on your blog.

That being said, I actually liked your review the most. I found it the most detailed of the ones I read (note: I did not read all of them because I do not follow ALL of the blogs, but I read a fair amount), and I loved that you posted the review after working out in the clothes. I might swing by to check out their sport bras, because I am in need of some new ones.

  20. stephanie on January 12, 2013 at 10:15 am

Hi! I actually really need some new sports bras and so I will be checking this out. $8! Sign me up.

I have seen this blog before but I have never really perused it. After meeting with a personal trainer and deciding it is not something I can afford, i have decided to do one of your shape-ups instead. I thought I would start with the 12-week one from a few years ago because it’s long. It is really awesome that you create this free resource for people who want to get in shape, thanks 🙂

I had no idea! Obviously my closet is full of lulu since I used to work there, but paying full price now kind of hurts…so I don’t haha. I may have to stroll into Old Navy!

    • Fitnessista on January 12, 2013 at 1:12 pm

it’s painful to pay full price after getting that awesome discount.

  22. Jrm on January 12, 2013 at 4:15 pm

I have bought 3 of their roll cuff shirts (different colors/stripes) this past month for work. I live in AZ and they’ve been a good fit for our “winter”. Plus Old Navy works with many of the e-bate type sites (and the Delta Skymiles shopping program). Hooray! Love the stuff you picked out.

  23. Carrie A on January 14, 2013 at 9:29 am

LOVE their active line! I raved about it to all my gym friends until they finally went and picked out their own workout goodies. I’m on a strict budget and Old Navy makes cute workout clothes affordable.

  24. Kylee on January 14, 2013 at 11:42 pm

I got some of their active wear a week ago or so 🙂 I got the baby blue neon detailed half zip top and the long sleeve “hoodie” as they put it, really it’s just a long sleeve grey active top with thumb holes and a cool cowl-y type neck line. And I got a padded vneck pink sports bra 🙂 Ended up being 35 dollars! Wore the grey one skiing and it was a great under layer!

Love the pants you got too… I also really liked that black windbreaker they had but haven’t gotten myself to spend the 25 on it. I had it at the register but at the store it didn’t ring up on sale! But online it’s on sale… decisions decisions!
