Guac and rita

“Wow, that was a really bad meal at Guadalajara Grill.”

-No one ever

Tacos2

Liv and I met the Pilot at G Grill when he got off work this afternoon. We shared spicy table-made salsa and chips, had a date with our friend ‘Rita, and I enjoyed the Guac-o Tacos while he had the lobster-stuffed salmon.

Tomandliv2

As delicious as everything was, the best part was watching Oliv dance to the mariachis. She LOVED them.

Liv dancing

(and they loved her)

Earlier today, we just hung out around the house,

Me and liv 3

(she’s teething big time- more about the fortress on the family page)

went to Whole Foods for a few things

Groceries 3

(I originally went for salmon but it didn’t look as fresh as usual for the price, so just grabbed other things we needed)

and I enjoyed these spring rolls as an afternoon snack- I’m on a spring roll kick lately.

Spring rolls

I had a little bit of a freak-out today about my race. I know I can’t drop out of it, but wish I would have asked to do one later this year so I could train when the weather isn’t so hot. I’m going to do a practice 10k on Sunday just to give myself the confidence that I need to know I can finish it. It’s been over a year since I’ve ran that far, so even if I end up walking some of it, if I know I can do the distance, I’ll be more comfortable come race weekend (which is less than a month away. Halp me.).

Have you ever done a race without training as planned? How did you adapt? Has anyone ever skipped out on a race they signed up for?

Usually the free shirt is enough motivation for me 😉

We’re starting the Hunger Games- I’m excited to finally see it.

Have a great night and I’ll see ya in the am with a weekend cardio workout!

xoxo

Gina

Such sweet photos 🙂 you have nothing to worry about, you will kick that race’s butt! I can’t wait for the next movie in the series to come out, I loved Hunger Games!

  3. Julie on August 25, 2012 at 12:02 am

I read the book and loved it and watched the movie – loved it too.

Looks like Oliv is in love with a man in a green flightsuit just like you!

I’ve signed up for a few races and then bailed due to injuries or lack of training (I’m still not sure why I thought doing a marathon sounded fun). But! I also signed up for and (mostly) ran a 5k last weekend, having not run since I was a month or so into my pregnancy (I’m two and a half months postpartum now). It was totally spur of the moment, and honestly it was pretty hard even though I’ve been doing other forms of exercise, but it did make me want to start running again and ultimately I’m happy I did it.

You got this ;). Kick that races a$$!!!!

  7. Jasmine W on August 25, 2012 at 12:37 am

I actually want to make it one of my goals to run in a race. I haven’t committed to running since high school sooo it’s been in the back of my mind to really start up again. =) I feel your pain with the whole heat factor though, living in FL my whole life has always had me avoiding the outside during the summer. I bet you will dominate your race regardless though!

  8. Lata on August 25, 2012 at 12:49 am

I signed up for the Broad Street run in Philly (10 miler). I thought singing up for it would kick me in the butt and get me to train but I slacked with school getting in the way (at least that is my excuse) I did sporadic runs here and there but no real training. I thought there was no way I could complete this race but I signed up with a friend so I couldn’t back out. Come race time I actually kept a decent mile time around 9 minutes and the sheer volume of people kept me going. Around mile 4 this woman buddied up with me and kept me going at a good pace until mile 9 and she jetted off ( she actually trained) and this last mile KICKED ME IN THE BUTT. I will forever remember that mile because my body was just jelly but thank god for the people cheering and running because I got through it. Just listen to your body and walk if you need too!! I’m sure you can make it!!

Wonder if they deliver??? To Texas!

  10. Emily on August 25, 2012 at 1:10 am

    She is beyond adorable!
You can never go wrong with chips & salsa/guac OR spring rolls. Those are literally the two things I’ve been obsessing over recently. So weird but I’m rolling with it. (:

  11. Shay on August 25, 2012 at 2:48 am

Have you thought about taking a day or weekend trip to Bisbee, where you can at least get some training in where it is cooler?

  12. amanda on August 25, 2012 at 2:48 am

I think your attitude with the race is perfect: do a “trial” just to get that confidence (“Okay, I can definitely do this!”). I also do the “what’s the worse case scenario?” game in my head. Like, “what the worst that can happen? I have to walk some of it. Big deal.” Kinda brings it back down and helps to remember, this is no big deal. If I walk some, I walk some. no biggie 🙂

  13. Jenny on August 25, 2012 at 5:00 am

I signed up for a marathon and started training only to find out a month later I was pregnant. I ended up walking the half 7 months pregnant with a friend and had a great time!

I got injured in early May this year running a 10 mile race and was signed up for the Boilermaker 15K in July. I have a 9.5 month old, so I had taken most of last year off from racing and I REALLY wanted to do this race. A couple weeks ahead of the race I got the go ahead from my doc to start running again. I stuck to short distances mostly, but a week before the race I did a 6 miler to find out if a 15K was even remotely possible. The 6 miler went really well, so I decided to go for it and just listen to my body. I did, and even though I was about 15 minutes off of my PR, I am so glad I did. It was fun to enjoy the crowds and the sensation of racing again (and the free beers at the after party didn’t hurt either 😉 ).

    • Betsy on August 25, 2012 at 12:54 pm

Boilermaker is the best! Was the May run Mountain Goat?
Gina, you’ll be fine! A big part of running is mental skills.

      • Fitnessista on August 25, 2012 at 4:11 pm

you’re totally right- so much is mental

  15. Michelle @ Eat Move Balance on August 25, 2012 at 6:11 am

If Imdont feel prepared, I just look at the race as a “have fun” event, where I take it easy and don’t push myself too hard. Just try and have fun with it! Plus you might surprise yourself that you’re more prepared than you think!

    • Fitnessista on August 25, 2012 at 4:22 pm

that’s a great point, just do what i can

  16. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on August 25, 2012 at 6:55 am

You can do the race Gina!!! I know you will finish no matter what! don’t stress over it! I love that Livi dances to the mariachi band! She’s going to be a Zumba lover just like her mom 😉

  17. Kristen on August 25, 2012 at 7:15 am

Your gonna rock that race!! I know you’ll do great and even if you do have to walk some, big whoop. At least you’re doing the race, period.
I signed up for a 5K Turkey Trot a few years ago for Thanksgiving- a nice run before I stuffed my face haha- and at the time I had no running experience. I trained a little but with school it was tough. I wasn’t feeling very confident but I had people counting on me who were running it too. By some miracle, the day before the race I went to get my shirt and number only to find they lost my info. To them, I didn’t exist. I would’ve argued but I was relieved that I got out of it after all! You know what though? On Thanksgiving morning I woke up early on my own and went to a local park and ran my 5k. I did end up walking a little but I was so proud of myself. That very day inspired my love of running that I have today.

  18. Lauren on August 25, 2012 at 9:07 am

I live in Boston and just signed up for the Cape Cod Zooma 10k yesterday. I have never run more than 5 miles and that was last year. I started a training plan a month ago and finally decided to register for the race but I’m still very nervous. If I can do it, you can do it! Even if a little walking is involved I feel like it will be a great accomplishment to finish. There’s wine at the after race party too – good motivation!

    • Fitnessista on August 25, 2012 at 4:22 pm

wine is great motivation! if you need a slow running buddy let me know 🙂

    Only every. single. race.

I ‘forget’ to train. And by forget, I mean…I just don’t. I (used) to keep up a pretty good fitness routine even if I wasn’t actually running distances (boxing, kettlebells, sprints, other random cardio) and could more or less fumble my way through a race with a fairly respectable time (I PR’d at 2:16 exactly 3 weeks after the Princess half and did not run one step in that time…I also was going through some stuff and lost around 20 pounds in those 3 weeks due to not eating/sleeping and decided 5 days before the half to sign-up. Not smart.).

The last 2 months I all but removed exercise from my life. I boxed once and ran exactly twice – once a month ago for less than 3 miles and once on Sunday when I did another half marathon. Ended up with my 3rd worst time at 2:33.

So if *I* can do it…you can definitely do it!

(I always wonder exactly how good/fast I could be if I were to do that crazy thing called training.)

    • Fitnessista on August 25, 2012 at 4:21 pm

hahaha same! i wonder what i could do if i actually focused on training, but i love doing other things so much more

Liv is so cute! I love the picture of her dancing 🙂

One of my goals for 2013 is to compete in a race. It probably won’t be a long distance but I want to start small. I’m hoping that committing to a race will give me a goal to aim for. I’m sure that you will kick that race’s butt!

  23. Cait on August 25, 2012 at 10:42 am

how cute, the pic of Liv and the Pilot!

  24. Kelsy on August 25, 2012 at 11:54 am

    Hey Gina-

I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you that I’ve been reading your blog for about a year now and I absolutely love it. I always steal your fitness and recipe ideas because they’re just so fun and realistic.

Also, I just relocated to Tucson from New York about a month ago for a teaching job. When I did, I remembered that you live in the Tucson area so I checked out your blog for some tips and mentions of good restaurants and pretty much anything else I could find out. So, even though you didn’t know you were doing it, thanks for the help! I’m absolutely loving it here so far. I decided to comment on this one because Guadalajara is one of my FAVORITE places that I have found here so far. The atmosphere and food are both great!

I’ll keep reading your blog in hopes for more helpful hints about Tucson. I’m still looking for good restaurants, cool hang outs, a good gym, and some great outdoor exercise places so hopefully you make mention of some of those soon 🙂 Thanks for maintaining such a great blog!

    Kelsy

  25. Heather on August 25, 2012 at 12:28 pm

You’ll do great with the 10K. My experience has been to train the best you can, then just go with how your body feels on race day. I’ve always done better than expected- probably just from the excitement!

I did have to drop out of the marathon I trained super hard for because I got the flu the week prior. It just about killed me when I realized I wouldn’t be making it to the race. I deferred my registration to the following year and couldn’t participate because I was 6 mos. pregnant. Now that I’ve had the baby and learned my lesson regarding flu shots, I plan on getting my butt in gear and finally finishing that race!

  26. Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews on August 25, 2012 at 12:36 pm

That Mexican food sounds awesome! I bet it is fun to have a baby there that can enjoy the music.

Hi – random questions – what color are you wearing on your nails in yesterday’s posts? I love it and am hitting up Ulta today. 🙂

    Thanks, love your blog!

I love those green pants! And livi is so adorable, she makes me want a baby so badly. But I’m 21 do I’m definitely going to be waiting like 6 years. Haha

  29. Laura J. on August 25, 2012 at 1:37 pm

I’ve been a spring roll kick lately too! Maybe it’s because I’m pregnant or maybe it’s b/c I keep seeing them on your blog 😉

  30. Leah O on August 25, 2012 at 2:01 pm

I almost never train for races. Im a huge procrastinator and in most cases, before I know it, the race is the next day and I feel totally unprepared! Another huge part of it is that I get super anxious and nervous running in races so even if I prepared ahead of time I still freak out a little bit. You are going to rock the 10k! You are so fit and spend a lot of time doing other sorts of exercise which will help you get through it. I always just want to do well racing so I push myself to finish even if I don’t have a great time.

  31. Caitlyn on August 25, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Hi Gina! How did you make the dipping sauce for your spring rolls. They look amazing btw! I make fresh spring rolls all the time and LOVE them! I just suck at making the peanut sauce! Do you buy it pre-made or is there a recipe you use? Thanks!

  32. Jacky on August 25, 2012 at 4:03 pm

Gina! I have a feeling you will do great! My second LA marathon was a race that I did not train for and to make a long story short, I ran 26.2 miles and met interesting runners.. Also, the feast after the race with the familia didn’t hurt. I was definitely sore for a few days after but not dropping out of the race was the best decision for me because I just can’t handle the feeling of regret (: anyway, best of luck! And have fun!

  33. AmyD on August 25, 2012 at 4:49 pm

In a coaching class I took through RRCA, we were told that if you slow your pace by just 10% you can run twice as far. You’ll do great! Just slow the pace if you have to. Most of all, have fun!

  34. Molly L on August 25, 2012 at 4:56 pm

I’ve commented before about how reading your blog makes me miss Tucson so much (I went to UA and live in Phx now, where I’m originally from)… but now I’ve decided a Tucson trip is needed, and I’m going over Labor Day, anddddd I just added Guadalajara Grill (so good!) to my list of places that i need to take my friends who have never been in Tucson before. I just thought you should know you’re inspiring me ha!

  35. Stacy on August 25, 2012 at 5:36 pm

I had been training for my ultra for months and when I ran it my training fell way off. I had planned on two half marathons 6 weeks after my ultra and another one 9 weeks after my ultra. My running was sporadic for both. I set a reasonable pace for me, considered my training, and did it. It totally sucked at the halfway mark, but I completely believe that running is so much more mental strength. You are in great shape and I know you can do it. I know a guy that did cross fit and never runs. He finished a half in 2 hrs flat. Kinda ticks me off since I train so hard, but I think it shows, when you are in shape, you are in shape. Good luck! I know you can do it!

  36. Tasha on August 25, 2012 at 6:06 pm

I’ll confess..I never really “train”..or I should say I start training and then the long distance runs come along and I can’t find 3-4 hours to do the full runs. I’ve done a half marathon and full marathon, both which I didn’t properly train for. I didn’t do a 20 mile run before, and about 3 weeks up to the marathon I maybe ran 3-5 miles for my runs. But of course I did the galloway method so it was run/walk, and I am the kind of person that can walk a long ways, not necessarily run it. So nonetheless I was still able to finish in decent time and didn’t have to get picked up by a sweeping shuttle. But I know for many, they take it much more seriously and believe training properly is crucial.

  37. Jess on August 26, 2012 at 1:09 am

I’m sure you’ll be totally fine in your race!!! No doubts there will be lots of people in it who have trained far less then you! Cape Cod sounds like a pretty place to run!

  38. Tracey on August 26, 2012 at 8:54 am

Once I sign up for a race, I HAVE to do it. I signed up! Which has led me to do two races with serious sinus infections. Not fun. I might wimp out on the warrior dash I signed up for tho…its the weekend before the half I have been training my butt off for, and if I hurt myself I will be so mad!!

  39. Paula on August 26, 2012 at 1:27 pm

    Hi Gina!
I adore your blog and look forward to reading it everyday. I love how real and open you are. I have been following you for a few years now and you are an inspiration – so much so that I finally went for it and started my own little blog, mostly about interior design, decor and fashion. I hope you check it out.

  40. Alicia on August 27, 2012 at 11:22 am

I have hit a similar hurdle. August is such a miserable month in the Mid-Atlantic (and the treadmill so incredibly boring) that I can’t bring myself to run the 10k distance. I just keep doing smaller runs, pushing myself to get at least 5 miles in on the weekends, and telling myself that I know I can and will finish my 10k, which is only 2 weeks away! Yikes!
